Joke. The worst experience of my life. My appointment started at 10:30. The girl never introduced herself. Never asked my name. Called me by my last name. Didn't talk to me the whole service. I showed her what I wanted and her AND THE TEACHER KIA said they could do it no issue. Lots of issues. I was in foils from 10:30-3:30 she then washed and toned and got me in the chair at 4. I left at 4:30 because I have things to do and don't trust this child to dry and style my hair. I left this circus with wet fried hair and girls telling me how great it looks. The teacher came over multiple times saying it looks good and the color is taking well. When I told this to the manager she said "well she was probably taking to Reagan telling her a good job." Okay either way it's a lie. The girl is clearly not ready to work on hair. I specifically told her I do NOT want blonde on the top of my head because I wear my hair up every day. Her and Kia quoted me 3-4 hours. I told them that's how long it takes a professional and she still said 3-4 hours. I was there for 6. No apologizes from anyone about that either. $162 and 6 hours later and for what? When I went to speak to the manager Tuesday she never apologized. Never even pretended to show sympathy. Said "we'll it's a school so you take that chance" What. The. Hell. What kind of response is that? She was bothered I was taking up her time. I am genuinely concerned with the people that teach here. The customer service is a joke. The manager is a joke. The teacher is a joke. Do not waste your time or your money. You will not be refunded no matter how much damage they cause to your hair. Reagan is the stylist and needs to be held back. She has no business working on hair. She is in over her head. Now I get to take another day to sit and get this corrected. Do yourself a favor and spend the $$$ on a legit professional who will make you feel like a million bucks not like a sweaty crumpled dollar that's been shoved in a boot. The ladies that run this "school" should be ashamed but they can't find a care in the world. My husband told me about this place after he came home with a great haircut. I stopped by on a Thursday (although Tuesday is $5 haircut day) and came out 2 hours later with a great haircut complete with a shampoo and blow dry for $12. Princess did a wonderful job with my hair. She was friendly and professional and did a great job learning the cut. I liked going here and learned a lot about hair as the teacher pointed out some techniques Princess could do to achieve the look I was going for. Princess was very patient with me because I have no clue what to do with my hair never mind how I want it cut! I will definitely be going back and will ask for Princess specifically. read more

When the color was too dark I was told I had to follow a protocol and wait a few days for them to file some paperwork and then they would make another appointment. I did this with them once before and it took 10 days for them to call me back to fix a bad color. They won't just fix it while you are there. They make you come back. Who wants to leave, wait while they do some internal decision making and then come back. Time consuming and not good management, in my opinion. read more

Whoever the teacher is, I want to say Lakeisha was extremely rude to clients and students. She was very demeaning and to be honest, very unprofessional. I'm not entirely sure who made her a teacher, but I recommend having someone else do the job. She doesn't have the passion to teach or do her job the right way. 10/10 DO NOT RECOMMEND! This was a great first experience with being a client at this cosmetology and beauty school. I needed a pedicure because I'd hurt my back and couldn't bend. The manicurist, Fabian, was so kind and friendly and did a beautiful job! It didn't matter that my nails had grown longer than normal and I was super happy with the length after cutting. The price was almost HALf of what I'd been paying at a salon. There wasn't a big chair, though; it was a chair and a separate foot spa basin for soaking the feet and a platform for the manicurist to care for each foot (but it's almost half the price of a salon, right?)! There were three choices of nail polish and I liked the dark red i chose, but for continuity I will bring mine from home for the next manicure. Yes, I'll go again in a month. Actually, I liked it so much there, I have an appointment for a haircut later this week! read more

I was looking for another affordable salon for a spiral perm. The Mitchell's Cosmetology School in Cary, where I have been going for several years has closed. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that Paul Mitchell school was opened until 10 pm. I called and made an appointment for after work. I was running about 15-20 minutes late due to traffic so I called to let them know. The ladies were very friendly and patient. The young lady who was styling my hair was very sweet and patient. She first trimmed my hair before the perm. I was worried about the time she took with the trim since she still had to roll the perm rods. But I never heard her complain. When she started to roll the perm, she was having some trouble getting some of the perm rods to stay in. One other student graciously came over and assisted and provided her with helpful tips. My appointment went way beyond closing (I apologized for delaying them) but the ladies and their supervisor told me not to worry about that. I am very pleased with the results. I have definitely found my new salon for perms. read more

I literally never write reviews but am compelled to so that others don't make the same mistake we made. I appreciate the fact that this place is a school, but I spent years going to the Aveda Institute & I can say they had a smooth operation before they brought people in. This place is filled with novice people who appear to literally be experimenting on your hair. There is little oversight. We spent literally 7 hours here with people testing out techniques for highlights and were charged twice what we were quoted. After it was said and done I truly felt that they should be paying us to waste our time and experiment on our hair. Go into this with eyes wide open, that you will pay a fair amount for someone to experiment with your hair. Pretty disappointing, and we will not be back. read more

As one who cannot afford -- and does not want to afford -- paying $100.00 or more for hair color and cut, I was compelled to try this. The student who has been cutting my hair, Baylee, is about to graduate, so I won't see her much longer, but I like her. She tells me she will match me with another student before she leaves -- one she thinks can handle my "hair" issues. I find it interesting to watch students interact with each other and their teachers. Many are just practicing with mannequins and wigs. Lots of young people, just starting out on life, makes for a good amount of energy. I like this place. read more

What a great haircut! I have very fine hair that had some damage to the ends and I needed a trim badly and some reshaping. Max delivered amazing results! I've never been able to wear my hair without curling it and this cut didn't need anything but a bit of a blow dry and a comb through with my fingers. He's been so well-trained that he's been offered a position at a local, high-end salon but I'll be back in a few weeks for some highlights and conditioning treatment before he's gone. I went to Paul Mitchell's the School because I needed my hair washed. The place was well organized + clean and they had plenty of products for someone looking for their brands specific. I ended up getting my hair washed by a student who was extremely nice + welcoming. She was very knowledgeable about natural hair. The teachers there made sure that the students knew what it was that they were doing. I ended up getting my hair curled by the student and she did an okay job! The parking is great. They have a huge parking lot. Overall my experience here was okay. read more

Wow. I read the reviews, but I knew hair and I figured there was no way that with their knowledge and my knowledge they would be able to ignore proper hair care. Wrong. I went for a cut and a perm. I was there five hours. I left without a perm and a lot of burnt hair. The student was very nice. She did what she was told. The instructor, 11/25-awful. There for a perm and haircut. You cut hair like mine after a perm. The student opted to cut it before. I questioned it and she said this was the way. I had some highlighting done two months prior and was specifically there to have the damage cut out. So we're cutting the damage out before we're about to damage it more. Awful. She missed the front part of my head. At this point I'm not too worried because the big thing is the perm and she has just a shored me that we're supposed to cut it before. And I can trim my bangs myself. I have a long long history of perms not taking in my hair and curl falls out very quickly from heat styling. But I just had some color done so it should've been easier. Nevertheless I go to a lot of trouble to explain to the student and the instructor how I've been permed many many times since I was a child and it didn't take. She conditioned my hair prior :/. Worth noting, My hair never burned off before and we're talking 1990s perms. The goal was to get them to use smaller rods and a strong enough perm to take immediately. The instructor directs the student to use larger wave rods. The one time the student did listen to me was whenever I told her to roll the front of my hair back instead of forward which would have been a nightmare if the perm had taken. Let's skip over the hour separated by 15 minute increments in which the student tried to get the instructors attention checking it every 15 minutes and it being clear the perm was not taking. She was required to get the sign off from him before going forward bc the perm at the base level should only have been on 15 minutes. Was he prompt,? No. He was chatting leisurely each time we needed him. At one point I went and stood near him with my arms crossed until he recognized the student. Let's remember I had partially damaged hair, came in to have the damage cut off. It was clear at every check the perm wasn't/was barely taking and surprise, it didn't. I am in hour five and very frustrated because I have been clear every step of the way about what things are likely to work and feel I've been ignored. I'm not sure the order of the next part but the student begins to blow dry my hair pulling it straight with her fingers and using a downward facing concentrator. The WORST thing you can do. At this point I call it. I tell her to stop everything and I need to talk to the instructor. I told the instructor I was frustrated because I felt like I had wasted my Time, six hours the day before Thanksgiving is a lot of value. He proceeds to gaslight and condescend me telling me he doesn't feel like I wasted my time and going on and on about how getting curl is a process and I need to be patient. I made the conscious choice to not dress him down in front of his students and regret it. He says they chose a weak perm which was the right choice for my partially colored hair which may have had some validity had they not left it on for what was north of an hour or pre conditioned it. He tells me he can get my hair to curl immediately with the strong perm which makes me upset because I was very clear about my hair needing that and putting it on for a short amount of time would have been the right choice. And having spent so much time they could have pulled the plug sooner and tried something different or just done a deep conditioner and let me have my time back. Because some was already damaged it was insane to leave anything on that long. So most of the hair in the front left of my head is burned off as well as the underneath right side. It has been snapping like dry twigs for over a month and I just found some products that are making it feel like real hair again. There is no curl. I have all of this waste all of this damage for nothing. Great news though, they gave me a discount on the perm. But now I need a haircut. ‍. read more

This is due to a more personal issue, like jealousy, especially if the person knows what they are doing. The graduation rate is VERY LOW!! DO YOUR RESEARCH!! I wish I WOULD HAVE!! This student is now going to another school, and wow, such a big difference!!! This other school has a very high graduation rate and very professional. Again, do your research, ask around; other people will advise you not to go here. Robin was very knowledgeable about natural hair, cut and color. I received a base color, partial highlights, a blow out/flat iron and my ends trimmed. When I first arrived, I wasn't greeted for several minutes, the receptionist saw me but seemed distracted by the computer system. I was greeted and taken to the salon area by Robin. We did a consult, selected the colors of my choice, and talked about different options for styling as well as what would be best for the health of my hair. I really appreciate Robin taking the time, overall I had a good experience. I was there for about five or six hours, that is why I left four stars instead of 5. read more

This school burned my neck when I went to get a perm. Not only did the curls drop right after I left the salon, the chemical solutions leaked onto my neck so a huge red scar developed after two days. When I went in to confront them, they dismissed my doctor's note saying it a first-degree chemical burn, said it is impossible to ascertain whether it's caused by their chemical, and just ignored me afterwards. If you do not want to be treated the same way, don't come to this salon. read more

I stopped by here today to make the plunge and....yep.....get a perm. Now, now. Stop picturing those scary old school perms (sorry mom). I was going for a loose/wavy-type perm, and that's what I got! Although I'm happy with the outcome, the appointment setting process was a hassle. I requested an appointment online and was notified that someone would reach out shortly to confirm it. Days passed until the day finally came, and yet there was no confirmation. I called this morning to ask if I did, in fact, have an appointment, only to have the woman on the phone put me on hold for 5 minutes. She then came back and said my appointment request "just came through right now," so no, I don't have one. I find it hard to believe that the appointment request came through 2 days late at the exact moment I called them to ask about it. Plus, the receptionist was not very helpful in trying to figure out a new time. Regardless, I was able to come in later in the day to get the hair treatment. The student who did my hair was great. She was so sweet and very receptive to what I wanted done. The instructor, Veronica, was also fantastic. She was very present throughout the whole perm process while also helping other students. Neither her nor my student tried to push me to buy any expensive products, either, which was highly appreciated. I ended up paying $30 for the perm (plus tip), which is a fantastic deal. Also keep in mind that they use the same products that regular Paul Mitchell salons use, so it's not like you're paying very little but getting the McDonalds of hair treatments. The perm lasted a few hours, but no longer than it would at a regular salon. They were very efficient, even with the instructor involved. Plus, everyone working there seemed genuinely happy -- always a good sign! I will definitely return to this salon school to get my hair cut in a few weeks. I highly recommend it as long as you call to make an appointment instead of requesting one online. read more

I came to get an ombre and was told a balayage would be better. I was there for a total of 5 hours and left orange, splotchy and extremely uneven. I came back on Friday the 20th for a refinement and while the color is ok the placement is awful and my hair is like straw. I had a total of 3 students and a teacher doing my hair and was there for over 5 hours yet again. The teacher was rude to the students and gave me awful looks when she walked over after my service was complete. I'm very upset because I spent 80 to go home with hair I don't know what to do with and have no idea how to fix. I was given very little guidance as far as what to do to repair my hair. Reviews don't lie. DO NOT step foot into this place to work, for school, or for services. The owners have no idea what they're doing, the instructors are all clueless when it comes to cosmetology, they have no knowledge of Paul Mitchell systems (except one), culture, techniques, and will have you leaving the school clueless unless you learn to teach yourself. They all need training from the front of the school to the back of the school. If you are thinking of sending your child here DONT, thinking of enrolling yourself to pursue your dreams DONT. TRUST ME. Luckily I was able to build strong relationships with some of the senior students who taught themselves or had more guidance from one of the night teachers Ms.Karen, but other than that, this place is a complete joke. I have been to the Paul Mitchell school in Raleigh several times now and seen 2 people. First was Morgan, she was great and gave me a great cut. Every time since then I have seen Alice. She is absolutely wonderful! She really takes time to figure out what you want, what works for your face shape, styling time, etc. she also gives you tips and pieces of info about the style, products she is using, etc all throughout so you can know how to make it look good yourself. She is always happy to see me and I never feel like I am just another model for her to practice on. She gives the best haircut I have ever had! I have sent some friends and family to her as well and they all agree, best haircut ever! read more

On 8/21/2019 I called Paul Mitchell to make an appointment to get my hair trimmed and a deep conditioning treatment in preparation for a wedding. The person answering the phone kept asking me "do you want a haircut?" I said, no, a trim and deep conditioning. After a needless waste of time of going back and forth with the receptionist she finally set up an appointment for later that day. Before entering the school, I had thick, curly, long hair (down to the bra) with long layers. After my haircut, the right side of my hair had different lengths, nothing blended, was thinned out excessively, and a large section above my ear was 2 inches short. The left side was semi thick and rested on the top of my shoulder, with no layers. It was an asymmetrical hair cut gone drastically wrong. It was after I left at 3:30 p.m., put my glasses on and my hair dried, that I realized how severely uneven it was. I returned at 5:30 p.m. when the school re-opened for the evening students. The evening instructor was not polite or understanding. She accused me of not clearly communicating my request to the student. I can't get any more simple than, I only want a trim. In an unprofessional manner she said that I should never let a student use thinning shears on my type of hair. The only resolution was to cut all of my hair to the shortest length, which was two inches. The end result would look like a mushroom, because I have curly hair. Since I had a wedding on Saturday, I chose not to cut my hair. Instead, I took the left side of my hair and swooped it over to the right and created a side bun. While at work I now need to wear a scarf on my head for at least six months. It was a very traumatic experience. read more

As a student I wanted to leave a review & give my honest experience.. I graduated in April of 2022, The teachers & staff are not experienced in the material they are teaching, the school itself is low staffed & overall learning experience was not anything special. It's overpriced for what you learn & what you will experience going there. What is advertised is not at ALL what you get. There's many things I want to say, but I'm afraid this will be far too long. They spend very little time focusing on what is important, which is State Board Written and Practical exam in order to get your license. Out of 1500 hours, you only spend 2 weeks focusing on that material. With all the money you pay to attend, there is no product to use on clients, always low in inventory, including the barbicide & disinfecting products, REQUIRED by state board in order to stay up & running. The blame was ALWAYS placed on the students and if you are to speak out, you're risking the chance of being terminated which was constantly threatened by management. There is nothing "professional" about this school regardless of what they try & sell to you. In my personal opinion, it is a waste of money & time, and that's not even including the borderline abuse I witnessed & experienced from the teachers and leaders. Mentally it was draining for me and many other girls I knew who were trying to learn in such a toxic learning environment. My experience at this school was traumatic to say the least & I wish someone had told me this before I went there. Do NOT go here. read more

Just got home from getting a color, haircut and blow dry. I did not have an appointment, but only had to wait a few minutes. Tamerel took me back to the salon area. We talked about a color that would match my skin tone. After 30 minutes I decided what I wanted. Tamerel was so patient with me. She took as much time with me as I needed. I love my color and my new haircut made me very happy. She was so pleasant and I so appreciate her for taking the time to make sure I was satisfied. I'm taking the time to write this review to give insight to anyone considering this school. Unfortunately there's a maximum on how many characters may be used in this review. I started PM as a student in January 2018, this week I left to transfer to another school. Paul Mitchell as a school is unprofessional, unorganized, and unfortunately for students their intentions are not for the sake of education. It's truly a scam. My core instructor was unprepared, poorly spoken, and her priorities consisted of putting her personal life on display within the classroom rather than putting students education first. PM is a school that is self image promoting of their own brand. The state board does NOT test on what Paul Mitchell does, but instead on a text book which is called "miladys." A book the school does provide but does not focus on. I believe that no one wants to pay $18,000 to in the end have to become self taught so that they can pass state board. An example I would like to share of this self promoting atmosphere is wasting an entire class day being shut into a room to call/text any family/friends to donate to Paul Mitchell in I believe it was 15min intervals. Does that sound productive ? Or like taking advantage. An unorganized, unprofessional atmosphere also leads to chaos. Which is exactly what Paul Mitchell Raleigh is, a chaotic environment. I myself endured an unsafe environment that was encouraged by my own core instructor. A woman who openly disagreed with the director of the schools decision to terminate a student for threatening the life of another and even openly disagreed with simply sanitizing dirty tools, which is state required. I was losing hope as a student, I was feeling lied to, disappointed, nervous, and even belittled. This was my first visit and pretty disappointing. I did NOT get a hair service and might return for one but definitely do NOT recommend the mani/pedi or facial service. The gal that did all 3 of these was brand new - just started classes in June and I was her first customer. She had 2 red nail polishes to choose from and then pulls 4 others out of her purse - borrowed from a friend - for me to choose from They don't even provide colors! Then she sat on the floor while I got a pedicure with my feet in a bucket. The "facial" lasted 10 minutes and was $20. And it's in the middle of the hair salon with no privacy. Feedback? No opportunity to give any and they obviously don't care. Miller Motte in Cary is WAY better - for the same price facial you have a private room and it's a good hour. I didn't even leave with moisturizer on my face. I spent $50 and was very disappointed. Would NOT recommend. read more

Once again I have had a fantastic experience at this salon. This time I wanted to get rid of the grey but didn't want a drastic change. Samantha hooked me u p with a gorgeous color!! I have gotten some very nice complements about both the color and the cut. Sadly, she is graduating soon but she has at least one customer that WILL follow her!! Still trying to grow my hair our after receiving the worst haircut I've ever had a few months ago. These students are not properly supervised, and the student made horrendous choppy layers in the back of my head. I could not see what she was doing with my head turned. My hair was past my shoulders almost at breast length before I entered this place. The instructor came by once and said it looked good. The students and staff are grossly incompetent, and maybe even passive aggressive. You are better off cutting your hair yourself, or saving your money to go to a real salon. I am so very disappointed with this experience and what they are teaching students at this school. Customer was left without services requested and expected to pay. I went in to get a Shampoo, trim, color, and blow out for my natural hair. Walked out with with my hair wet and in twist paying $68 for color because person on my hair didn't have enough time to finish before 5. My appointment was at 1, didn't get started until 1:30. My niece made appt for me the previous Saturday and had been to them previously. Never was told before time that they needed to close at 5 and that I wouldn't have my services fully completed. Was also told wrong pricing about color-was told it would be$30 and it wasn't. Stylist never came to apologize, mentor came and said it wouldn't be finished and asked me to return the next day and they would discount the services. Also supposed to discount the service for that day and didn't. I will not be going back and I feel bad for the customer service they are teaching those students. I understand that it is a school but the complete disregard for customers was disgraceful. read more

I had a decent haircut and color here previously, but this time around was TERRIBLE. 1) The day of my first scheduled appointment I waited 45 minutes past the appointment time and then was told that the stylist had to take a lunch break, so I could either wait another hour or come back. So I rescheduled. 2) When I arrived for the rescheduled appointment they had no record of it. I again waited around 45 minutes past the rescheduled appointment time. 3) The person who cut and colored my hair was awful and clearly did not care at all about styling hair. I'm not sure why she was even enrolled at the school. My haircut looked nothing like the picture I showed her and discussed at length. 4) They didn't have the dye colors in stock that she planned to use on my hair, so she had to use different dyes, and my hair came out far too dark. 5) She didn't properly prep before applying the dye and got the dye all over my hairline and face. It looks terrible. 6) They didn't have shampoo stocked when she was washing my hair. (WTF?) 7) I WAS THERE OVER FOUR HOURS. SHE WAS SO SLOW AND INCOMPETENT. 8) I now have to find another salon to fix the MESS she made of my hair. Don't go here. It's the worst. read more

I came in last week for a full foil and a haircut. The student was really sweet but didn't leave the toner in my hair long enough and it came out looking orange. My hair is naturally a level 7 and I was going up to a level 9 - 10 and I've never had issues with my hair toning in the past when the toner was left on long enough, so I'm not sure why the teacher blamed my hair. I'm not happy with the haircut either, as she initially somehow eliminated my top layer and gave me a cut without layers, then cut the top layer after I mentioned that it was all one length but the top layer is still really long. All in all it was a bad experience, and I can't get over how the teacher and student took no responsibility and didn't offer to fix my color. read more

I called on multiple days and multiple times a days without having any luck to find a live person on the phone to make an appointment for me . Finally someone answered and I made an appointment. I battled traffic to make sure I got there on time which I did . Then I sat and sat and sat . Finally I went up and asked when I was going to be seen. They said the person that was assigned to me is not there . I thought if they knew that why did they keep me sitting there . She went and found me someone else to do my cut and hilight which I paid $42 plus tip for. The high l light is very poorly done and does not look professionally done and the cut was just a very brief trim. I probably will go to a normal Solon in a couple days and have them redo everything . All in all if you have a lot of time on your hand and are willing to take a chance that it may turn out less than optimal then try this place . Paul Mitchell the School has taken care of me a few times now. I first went to the school back in May to have my hair and makeup done for a fashion show. When I was given my assignment for hair/makeup I was surprised because I didn't even realize a Paul Mitchell school was just down the road near Brier Creek! They're kind of set back from the road so I imagine that not many people realize they are there. I loved the enthusiasm in the air though. All of the students seemed to really enjoy what they were doing whether it was hair for clients or working on us models as projects for the show (unrelated to Paul Mitchell) that night. When I needed a cut I decided to go back there in August. The girl who cut my hair was really sweet, but she did not have that confidence and conversation skill picked up to chat like you normally experience when you go to a salon. In fact, it felt rather awkward the whole time. It also took nearly 2 hours for a wash/cut/blow dry. So coupled with the awkwardness and the length of the experience I was very unhappy, but I couldn't really complain too much because she did a really good job and really did cut my hair exactly how I wanted it. On September 14th I was attending a friend's wedding and wanted to make sure I looked really nice for it so I made an appointment at Paul Mitchell again. I was paired with Morgan West and Asha for both my hair and makeup. They tagteamed it on my hair because I wanted a partial updo with braids coming from the sides tucked in the back with some curl. Beautifully done and they had fun doing it so I had fun! Then Morgan did my makeup. She whispered in my ear excitedly that it was her first updo and makeup on a client. I would never have guessed! A couple months later I knew it was time to touch up my highlights so I asked for Morgan since she'd told me she'd love to do a cut and color on me. When I came in on Saturday, November 3rd, I was given a warm welcome by her. I loved that she remembered me from when I came in on Sept 14th to have my hair and makeup done for the wedding. Less than 2 months before she was a Phase 1 student and during my next visit she had already moved up to Phase 2. We talked about the color and highlights I envisioned in my hair and she showed me samples and explained how they pick out the color for both highlights and lowlights. She was sensitive to my budget as well. My hair turned out great. Next time I must remember to take before and after pictures because mine was a breath of fresh air and I felt so rejuvenated after my cut and high/lowlights. My only sad that is when Morgan graduates. I may just need to follow her. She did a phenomenal job. Why not 5 stars then? I've had trouble making appointments. Sometimes when I've called I haven't been able to get someone on the phone even though it was during business hours and a couple of times I've called and left messages and not gotten a call-back. I keep going back because when I do go I get good services at an affordable cost though. I also like that they send you home with a quick reference note that tells you which products they used on your hair at each stage. For quick future reference......Phase 1 hair cuts are $12 and Phase 2 cuts are $17. Phase 1 Updo are 30 and Phase 2 Updos are $35. Phase 1 highlights start at $30 and Phase 1 lowlights start at $30.
