The staff is friendly and helpful, and the bathrooms with sauna and locker rooms are always clean. There's an aid station near the entrance and a small shop where you can buy chalk and shoes. They have bouldering and top rope

All climbing gyms have something of a funk, but this place is the worst. I joined to take the yoga classes mostly, but that's a hard pass. Classes start on time, but the gym allows members to show up late. When they do, they move the curtain, light up the whole room, and the noise of 100 climbers floods the room. Right in the time when you're settling in and trying to focus. Then the weight room is above the yoga room, so you get to hear weights slamming down during class, which is also disruptive. I found the classes super uneven, some being great (Bronwyn) and others being a weird combo of loud music over soft voices so you can't hear the instructor, or instructors borderline shouting at folks to expel breath as loud as possible. Not what I'm looking for. So, no problem, it's not for me. It's close to home, price is reasonable, and they have good climbing facilities. Boulder area isn't the best, but the rest of it is quite good with interesting routes changed often...enough. When I went to cancel, I was hit with a "policy" that you have to cancel on or before the 25th of a month or they will charge you for another month. I reached out on the 26th, 5 days before the next charge cycle. Seemed like plenty. Complained, go zero response. So basically I consider they robbed me of $110, because of course the cancellation policy is not visible..until you go to cancel. Hope it was worth the money, Movement. Cannot recommend.

I've dealt with a lot of setbacks in the past, and I was nervous about getting hurt again. From day one, Chelsea put me at ease. She took the time to really understand my background, my limitations, and my goals. Instead of giving me a one-size-fits-all workout, she designed a program that was tailored specifically for me. She made sure every exercise was safe, effective, and helped me build strength without aggravating old injuries. That level of attention and care made all the difference. Fast forward, and I've lost 57 pounds so far -- something I never imagined was possible when I first walked through the doors. More importantly, I feel stronger, healthier, and more confident in my body than I have in years. Chelsea challenges me in the best way: she knows when to push me a little harder and when to adjust so I don't risk reinjury. It's a balance I've only ever had with one other trainer. Chelsea is not only knowledgeable and professional but also incredibly supportive. She celebrates every milestone with me, big or small, and keeps me motivated on days when I might not feel like showing up. Project Strong as a whole has created such a positive and encouraging environment, but having Chelsea as my trainer has truly been life-changing. If you're looking for a trainer who understands how to meet you where you are, works around your obstacles, and still helps you achieve amazing results, Chelsea is the one. I'm so grateful I found her and this program. It took me a year to write this review because I selfishly wanted to keep my time slot and trainer! But there are other trainers that are really excellent too so try out their services and be amazed on how your body can perform and transform.

Lala worked with me to gently build my strength around my injury, and within a few months my pain was so much improved. She is a very intuitive and thoughtful trainer. She always listens to my limits, yet pushes me when it's safe. We have both moved and we now work together over zoom. Every week I get a new, customized workout, and I do things I never thought were possible with my injuries. I sail competitively and that puts a huge strain on my body. It's great knowing Lala is always there to help put me back together again. I highly recommend her for Pilates and personal training.

I originally sought Valerie's help for right shoulder pain from doing my art work. The true reason for my pain, however, was muscle weakness and imbalances, which I had ignored for decades. By July 2024, my shoulder was pain-free. As I continued to increase my activity, Lala was always spot on with helping me with whatever other issues emerged. I religiously followed the exercises that she suggested. Rather than a rigid routine, she taught me how to strategically select "a la carte" from my menu of mobility, strength, and core exercises. Today, my shoulder pain is long gone. My mobility is much better: I can raise my arms and stretch without any hitches or weakness. When I look in the mirror, my shoulders are even for the first time in 20 years. Most importantly, I feel empowered to know how to respond to small issues that may come up. It feels good to be so much stronger and to be able to be active again!

A diamond in the rough that I would like to keep to myself, except Doug, the owner, deserves all the business he can handle. 2. I was a broken down bodybuilder who continued to exercise based on decades old ideas that weren't doing me any favors. While patronizing Doug's, I picked up an education on functional strength and fitness. In fact, I enjoyed the circuit approach so much that I crafted my own home gym as I couldn't get the kind of workout I desired at a commercial gym. This was expensive, but since I live in VA, it was the best option for me. An added benefit was that when the pandemic hit, I was squared away! 3. I haven't been in this kind of shape in years! Doug's exercise section is vast and varied and he removes the most dangerous exercises. This ensures a safe but exhausting workout; you feel the work you put in at the end and it gives you a sense of accomplishment. Compared to Crossfit, this is a much better and safer workout for all ages. 4. When I travel to CA, I see family, friends, and I workout at Rise Above. The people there are great. It truly is a community all unto itself. If you live in the area be sure to check it out. Best, Ryan

I've only ever been consistent when I hired a personal trainer to come to my door to work out. When my trainer moved onto another career gig, I never bothered to look for a replacement. I relayed this information when I first met Shannon, the owner of Gym Class. A friend had told me about it a while back and I had reached a point where I knew I needed to start exercising. My only goal when I started was to create a routine where I would consistently show up. With Shannon's support, I not only showed up every morning for the 7am workout, but I definitely got stronger. Shannon and Gen (another coach) are really good at gently pushing you, helping to make modifications, and keep you entertained while you're getting through your workout. They are also excellent at taking feedback or trying new things which you can really only do in a small gym setting. Lastly, the thing I wasn't expecting at all was to meet some kick ass women in the gym class community who are also encouraging me to show up and reach my own goals. I literally came for the small group workout and have found a wonderful little network of women as an added bonus.

Now I'm able to do moves I wasn't able to do when I started. Their instructions are easy to follow in terms of where we should/shouldn't be feeling the muscle activation, how to know if we're doing the moves correctly or wrong, and how we should be breathing. It's a small class and instructors go around giving hands on and verbal form corrections that really click and I can feel the difference. I also realized I had an anterior pelvic tilt which has noticeably gotten better and my lower back pain went away completely. My body has transformed so much already within 3 months and I'm excited for how much more it's going to change in the next year. I really hope this place is open forever and selfishly hope all the instructors don't move away or anything like that haha

But what truly stood out to me was the instructor. The amount of knowledge she has is incredible. She corrected my form throughout the entire class -- which I absolutely LOVED. Honestly, who wants to pay for a class just to do movements incorrectly and not actually learn anything? For the first time, I truly felt my muscles working the way they're supposed to. The connection between core engagement and breathing was something I had never experienced before in my life. I left feeling challenged, stronger, and so much more aware of my body. You can tell she genuinely has the knowledge, cares about teaching proper form and helping students improve, no matter their level. It made such a difference in the quality of the class. Thank you so much to the instructor for such an incredible experience!

For context, I am a white belt with about three years of training, and my father is a purple belt with over ten years of experience. First, I want to highlight the positives. The owner, Nina, is incredibly welcoming, and Professor Brenda is the best coach I've ever trained under. She is knowledgeable, patient, and creates a great learning environment. If this review were based solely on them, it would be a 5/5. However, our experience with coach Sal was extremely concerning. This was our first class at this gym. After an excellent lesson from Brenda, we moved on to sparring. I was paired with Sal, and within the first minute he submitted me multiple times with a level of intensity I've never experienced from a black belt working with a low-ranked student such as myself. In the past when I have sparred, higher belts typically roll in a controlled, instructional manner, especially with someone new to the gym or at a lower level. During our roll, he applied a leg lock so quickly and aggressively that I barely had time to tap before feeling sharp pain in my knee. Later, he attacked my arm in a way that caused an audible pop in my elbow. He reacted with surprise but did not check on me or apologize. The next day, I was limping from the leg lock and had to wear a sling due to the pain in my elbow. My father had a similar experience. Both of his shoulders were injured during his roll with Sal, resulting in tears that caused sleepless nights and required him to wear a sling as well. We both had to miss work and have been in physical therapy ever since. Our combined medical costs have exceeded $2,000. We informed the gym, but we never received a response. In all our years of training, neither of us has ever encountered anything like this. Injuries can happen in jiu jitsu, but the level of force used by Sal, especially with new students, was far beyond what is normal or safe. It has taken us six months to feel comfortable training again. If you choose to visit this gym, the environment created by Nina and Brenda is wonderful, but I strongly recommend avoiding sparring with Sal Lara due to the risk of serious injury.
