My husband and I stayed her for 13 days. We had to leave a day early to move out of state and they only give credits. It is $41 a day for non residents of Kane Co. It is easily accessible and right down the street from several shops on Randall rd. The sites are level. There are two parts, apparently old and new. We stayed a week in nights the new part... it is open and close to forest preserve trail heads. The old, shaded and a bit more compact. Now... their water is RUSTY!! It turned out camco filter brown. Make sure you have a filtration system and a good one at that's you can't drink the water even though you can drink the water. There are pit toilets but no showers. 10 primitive hike in sites. 70 ish sites for rvs. It is quiet and no one bothered us. Mid week it is basically empty. I'm not sure if we would use this campsite again if we had the opportunity. The water was a huge bummer. read more

Quite a nice little county owned campground. Very basic campground without any amenities. No showers on site but washrooms were very nice. Sites were very level and large but no sewer hookups. They do have 2 dump stations on site though free for registered guests. Campground was very quiet and sites were large. Easy access to trails for hiking and biking. read more

Now that I've been a camper here and not just a tree-hugger wandering through the forest, I figured it's time for an update! I still love this place.... but it doesn't rank as high in my favorites anymore as I've fallen in love with other places. Still, this is a really nice campground and is nearly packed on summer weekends. PROS: + primitive campsites available as well as full hook-ups and equestrian sites. + all RV campsites are cement/blacktop and mostly level. + bathrooms available -- both outhouses and flush toilets. + plenty of walking trails. + a little pond to go fishing. + close enough to shopping/dining/hospital/etc. + relatively low daily rates ($25/night RV sites. Kane County residents - $15/night.) + firewood available for sale at $5 a bundle. + sites near the woods, near the fields, and a couple pull-throughs! + two dump sites available ($15 to dump if you're not staying at the campground) + pretty much the closest RV campsite to Chicago. CONS: - no showers. - no extra amenities (pool, games, etc.). - several of the parking sites are not level. - employees are hit or miss. one woman was particularly rude to me. - too close to civilization. - first-come, first serve. no reservations. - maximum stay of 7 days. 14 days within 21 days. My husband and I have been staying at Paul Wolff and Big Rock (another Kane County campground) for a month and a half. Because of the rules regarding maximum length of stay, we've simply been staying back and forth at both sites for two weeks at a time. It's acceptable (and sort of encouraged by employees). So, if you're a full-timer that wants to stay in the Chicago area for the summer, this arrangement works out nicely if you don't mind moving every two weeks. Happy trails, my friends! read more

I'm reviewing the camping/RV options here. This is a review for the Burnidge Forest Preserve, which is not listed on Yelp, but part of the campgrounds. The forest preserve is AWESOME! We have gone multiple times since quarantine began, and we will continue to go forever now. There are many paths, both gravel and hiking trails. We haven't explored every path yet, but that is our goal. Walking or biking, you will have fun. Also, you can cater your trek to your own time table, if you wanted to walk for hours, you can, if you want to do a quick mile, there is a route for that too. My favorite part is that there are some hills to get the heart rate going a little more than with a flat walk. Check it out. read more

Cheap, clean, basic campground. Great place to get away but still be close to home. Usually my first and last getaway of the season.

Very nice campground with a heavy emphasis on RV camping - no showers for folks willing to camp in the primitive spots for $15. In late August, I had to choose between open field and just inside the woods - and opted for woods to avoid mosquitos and for a bit more privacy. For about an hour after sunset, there were teenagers running screaming through the woods but after that it was pretty quiet. It's generally a nice, quiet park. There are toilets and a spigot for a little bird bath for the sweaty camping motorcyclist - a pretty and nice place to spend a night. read more

This is strictly from a day visit point of view for walking/hiking and not for the camping. Nice forest preserve with a combo of well-maintained paths (paved & gravel) and also a variety of more rugged equestrian trails (that you can certainly hike on as well). We rather enjoyed the equestrian trails for the many hills and paths delving further in to the woods and prairie. They have a decent picnic area with one covered shelter that has a fireplace and grill and several picnic tables both under the shelter and not. There are also a few benches here and there near the water. And bonus - there is a small restroom facility. read more

The worse customer service in the world! After a rainy night ... and being forced to purchase their firewood (that went from $9 to $20 because she was in a bad mood and probably needed gas money for the week) ... the counter help proceeded to add insults about weight and how you didnt need breakfast because you could go a few days with out eating. Ok let's make this very clear from the get go. This is an RV park, NOT a campground. I wish I had known that prior to making plans to visit but I do not think it would have swayed me. The park is a well organized and spaced out RV park far from the super parking lot affairs you may find elsewhere. The grounds are well maintained and what amenities they do provide are clean and modern. There is a small trail through a field good for walking/biking/running etc, a little climbing rock for kids, group pavilion and a little pond purportedly stocked with fish. The staff were very pleasant to deal with and guests are spaced out so that despite the lack of trees you do find a sense of privacy. Firewood is available for sale and the pricing is extremely competitive, more so if you consider the proximity to Chicago. There are several vault style toilets that are as clean and modern as you can find regarding places that are less than ideal to do business. The flush bathroom building is clean throughout and well maintained. There are no shower facilities. Each site has conveniently located power posts although the water spigots that are shared between to sites can sometimes seem oddly placed and far from the pad. Parking pads are all in good shape and mostly level. Cell reception is good, tv reception is fair. I would stay again, keeping in mind that Paul Wolffe Campground is actually an RV park geared towards fully self contained rigs. read more

Boy this place is hard to find in the dark .seems like an ok place .we are staying here tonight with our rv cause we are going to chicago tomorrow and doing the riverwalk.seems very remote like .hope my internet works here.cant tell much in the dark but seems ample enough for the night. Turnef out to be a great place .We ended up staying another night didnt make the riverwalk cause was raining but when it finally stopped we did a four mile trail in the back which was convient and nice .really peaceful here. read more

Just arrived at this campground, we have been traveling 9000 miles all over the states for the last 2 months in our Van.We had no problems at any campground all over the states with staying in our Van. We always requested a campsite, NO problem.TODAY at this place we asked for it again:) NO HE SAID....you cant because you do not have a Tent, ok so we ask for a RV site..NO YOU CANT, because you are a VAn and NOTa RV!!! What is this gay serious we thought...we thought he was joking first, but NO he was not.there were so many sites available and he did NOT want to accommodate us.its already 6pm and we drove 2 hours to get here...know we have to find a something ells. My absolute favorite place to run. Miles of groomed trails, from forest, paved, and crushed limestone. Great for horse back riding, mountain biking, hiking, running, and picnics. Bring your camper, horse, fishing gear, bike, snow shoes, cross country skis, dog, hiking boots, and friends, you'll have a good time. Clean, plenty of parking, and right on the edge of the city of Elgin. read more
