Before I get into the review, I want to forewarn anyone who is making the trek here to bring cash. Card is not accepted here. First let me tell you the customer service here was great! I told them it's my first time and they were so helpful in giving me options and their best recommendations. We decided on one of their recommendations which was the Paul's famous burger with everything including beetroot and side order of chips. The small size was more than enough to feed 2 people (unless you are extremely hungry then get your own ). We did a take away and this place was only 10 minutes from our place but we wished we ate it there. It did get a bit soggy but it was still delicious. Delicious burgers, the best I've ever had. McDonald's, hungry jacks, KFC, grill'd even do not compete. Looks like a normal burger with the buns, the patty/chicken pieces, the lettuce, special sauce, tomato etc and cooked pineapple, egg and bacon (you'd think a strange combination) but is the best thing to eat. Service is fast, they even take orders from you when you're in line so that helps things roll faster when you're in a very large queue. Chips are not too bad too- similar to El Jannah's. Definitely recommend stopping by- if you can't make the parking right in front, turn right at the traffic lights and there's more parking there. read more

Are the burgers better at Paul's than Hungry Jacks? I'd say so. The works burgers is so freaking huge that it's a challenge to get a proper bite. But nevertheless deliciously messy. So what goes hand in hand with a burger and dare I say makes the burger even better? a good side serving of chips. Unfortunately the chips were a bit disappointing for me. This was made up in their pineapple juice though. Fresh pineapple juice ftw! The other thing amazing about this place was they just work like clock work. One person stationed for each part of the burger. Whether it's cooking the patties, toasting the bread, frying the chips or putting the burger together they just made everything look so smooth and seamless that is was amazing to just watch while waiting in line. So the burgers were better than Hungry Jacks but are they better than Oportos which have their own spicy sauce? I'll leave that for someone else to answer. read more

As a "shire girl" born & bred I've grown up on the burgers from Paul's Famous. I consider myself very fortunate to have this famous burger joint right on my doorstep. People travel from all over Sydney, & honesty, no word of a lie, I have friends overseas that have heard of Paul's. Their burgers are my favourite burgers of all time. I first went to Paul's as a kid when it was the simple walk up window burger joint in Sylvania at the foot of Tom Ugly's bridge, run by the Zerefos family. I'd go with my dad to watch them flip burgers on a night when cooking was off the menu at home & Paul's was a clear run favourite for some takeaway. I'd stand up on a little box at the counter (so I could see over it & watch them on the grill) It was with great delight that I'd watch the friendly banter amongst the family who all worked together, including Helen Zerefos, the opera singer. It was always quite cool to see Helen there looking glamorous, with pictures of her successful singing career proudly displayed on the wall by her parents. The hours were short at Paul's, unlike the queue's, with short opening hours at this time it was very popular when the shop was open. Over time the shop expanded into the now location adjacent to where the small burger window once was. As time passed the business was sold, & is no longer run by the Zerefos family, but the great tasting burgers & favourites they created are still there for all to enjoy & just as great. Not only are Paul's famous for their burgers, they are well known for their Pineapple Crush. A drink made on pineapple pulp, & is sweet & delicious. Buy it by the cup for a a 2L bottle to take home with your burgers. There's also a fine selection of old school milkshakes too. I think the chips at Paul's are amongst the best to be found in the shire, coming out piping hot & crunchy, & just right, sprinkled with chicken salt & you'll find there's a fight on to get that last chip. The burgers are second to none. My go to standard order is the "Special with Cheese". A regular burger with the addition of Bacon, a friend egg, & cheese. A choice of sauce, & have to say the Paul's "special" sauce is hard to pass by, mustard, mayo & garlic based sauce. Tasty stuff! If you feel like taking your burger to the next level you could always wonder "the works" this is the special with everything plus pineapple. A great big homestyle burger with the lot. They have found a winning old school recipe here at Paul's & have been smart enough not to change it. The sesame seed bun is lightly toasted, & topped with fresh tomato, lettuce, & onions, the meat patties is oh so delicious, soft & moist & something I crave. There have been a few additions to the menu with time & the new owners (which aren't so new anymore) I've tried the chilli chicken burger which is rather awesome, with a juicy chicken fillet cooked to perfection, why would you go to oporto's when you can have this. Paul's Hamburgers have been feeding folks in the shire since 1957, & is a firm favourite amongst my family & friends. I've grown up on them, they're the vegemite of the Sutherland Shire. If you've never tried one & always meant to, I'm here to tell you they're worth the drive, worth the wait & you'll savour every last bite! (well I do) Be sure to check out their website for the opening hours as they can be a little tricky. They're very popular on a weekend, & it's nothing unusual to drive past on a sunny Sunday & see a line down the street. They're worth the wait. there's ample seating outside, or you can takeaway. They package the burgers up as they always have, wrapped in paper & hand written on the outside of what's what, & all packed up in a paper bag to go. I drive past here all the time and have been wanting to try it. I really wanted to love it but I wasn't a huge fan. Having grown up in the country in a huge fan of 'corner store' hamburgers which is what I expected here. I didn't really like the meat patty, it tasted quite processed I don't think they make their own patties. On a positive note the burger was HUGE and was great value for the size. The egg burger will set you back $7.30 and a small chips $3.80 I won't be in a huge hurry to come back but I'm glad I cured my curiosity by giving it a go. read more

Took a trip down south and had a craving for burgers (big surprise) and finally had an excuse to eat at the famous Paul's of Sylvania. The supply chain here is quick, someone takes your order in the queue and then you wait. I got the "Works" which includes egg, bacon, cheese, and pineapple. Yeah, pineapple. The burger most reminds me of the burger at Out of the Blue in Clovelly or a Hungry Jack's Whopper, which isn't a bad thing. It's a pretty messy burger and pretty tasty, but I can't say I was feeling the pineapple that much. The chips were only OK, and it's kind of a bummer they charge for tomato sauce. Since 1957 this Sylvania institution has been producing arguably the World's Best Hamburgers - as the bold claim goes. I was working in Cronulla and my next appointment was in Sylvania. My colleague Ben had the same schedule as me and said he was going to Paul's Hamburgers for lunch. I instantly replied that I was tagging along, sure that his greek tastebuds were a promising sign. The queue out the door was also a promising sign, as were the signs with 'best hamburger' claims and awards on the walls. The queue seemed daunting - it seemed every tradie within the region lunches here - but actually moved very quickly. Someone comes down the queue and takes your order in advance, so by the time you get to the counter your burger is ready. I got the stock standard meat and salad and onions variety, and it was pretty damn tasty. In the vein of old school burgers that you used to get from a takeaway shop, not Macca's rubbish or that fancy $15 prime patty farce. Good, honest food - what a pleasure! I don't think I can say it is outright the BEST burger I have ever tasted, but it was definitely the best value, at $4.50. Paul's is easy to spot on the South side of Tom Ugly's Bridge, but a little hard to get to if you don't know how. Coming from the city side you can pull up outside, once you slow down from speeding over the bridge. But there isn't that much parking out the front so you may need to make a loop and park in Belgrave Esplanade. Coming from the south stay in the inside lane, there is a loop road under the bridge. Park under the bridge or in Belgrave Esplanade too, if there is no parking out the front. read more

The burgers are affordable, especially in terms of the size of the feed you are paying for. Although it is difficult to find parking and at peak burger eating times its near impossible to find a seat, this joint is a must see for all burger lovers out there. I went to Paul's with high expectations from the rave online reviews and countless local praise they've garnered as a Shire institution. Their menu is humble hamburger fare; none of the fancy schmancy gourmet stuff that's so popular (and that I love) these days. The menu consists of hamburger with extras like cheese, bacon, egg and pineapple. They do a grilled chicken burger but I didn't sample it. It was lunchtime on a Friday but wasn't particulary busy, just a few customers before and after me. I ordered a cheeseburger with their special sauce and small chips with chicken salt. My first bite into the burger and I have to say, I wasn't blown away by it, like I was expecting. The ingredients were fresh, you get tomato, sliced iceberg lettuce and onion. The special sauce was good but not amazing. The bun was your standard Tip Top bun with sesame seeds. The best part of the burger was thankfully the patty. It was juicy and easily melted in my mouth, which I haven't experienced before. The small chips are quite substantial and can easily feed two. On the whole, it was a decent burger. I live nearby so it wasn't a big deal to get there for a nice Friday lunch. However, I don't get why people would travel from all over Sydney for it. Good burgers, yes. A takeaway store with Top-notch service. Has a large range of flavors for Milkshakes rather than your standard shake at McDonalds (Chocolate, Strawberry & Vanilla). Yes the burgers their are better than Hungry Jacks and leaves McDonald's for dead. Price for burgers alone are below $10. Chips with Chicken salt are great. Best to eat these after you've eaten all your burger as they'll fill you up quickly. You can eat your meal outside the store as there are outdoor seating or you can stroll down near the sea underneath Tom's Ugly Bridge. Watch out for the seagulls as always begging for food. After 50+ years, they've got their system down. There were about 6 employees behind the counter when I waltzed in at opening time, with everyone expertly manning their station. You won't find your fancy gourmet CBD burgers on the menu, just straight up home made burgers cooked to perfection. The chips were certainly a contender for the best I've had from a take away shop, I just wish they came in a single serve size as I wound up throwing most of mine away. Prepare for a line. I moved to the USA 25 years ago, and I return yearly and look high and low for a 'real authentic' Aussie burger, made the old fashioned way, and it is surprisingly very hard to find. Maybe I got them on a bad day? I really didn't think there was anything special about Paul's. After reading the reviews and driving from Cronulla to try them out I was pretty disappointed and so was my wife. Then again, that may be because we just got back from a trip to California where amazing burgers were plentiful. Unfortunately, the buns Paul's use were the cheap sugary type with sesame seeds on top, like McDonald's use. I had the special sauce (garlic aoli) and thought it was pretty flavourless. I also had an egg with my bacon cheese burger, but the egg was over cooked. I won't be going back as there are many better burgers around than Paul's (like Ritz Chix in Cronulla). I'll leave on a positive though and say the place was clean, service was polite, and staff were efficient despite being quite busy. read more
