I needed a locksmith who had 'blank' keys for a 1974 VW bug. I used Yelp to bid the project out. Only two people responded... The first one asked for a photo of the key... I texted it... crickets (no reply) for 3 days. Another one who said they were mobile and would come to my house and make a duplicate for $100 (flat rate charge). IF I needed another key or keys they'd be $50 EACH. My response was LOL. I'd previously called a VW dealer... they only sell the modern keys... don't make any keys. No places like ACE hardware or Home Depot has the blank keys for a car that hasn't been made in 50 years. Got it. Finally a locksmith (most are mobile now) called back... he was on the road between jobs and said he didn't know if he had the blanks but I sent him a photo and he said he'd check when he got to his destination. In the meantime he recommended Paul's Safe and Lock... a brick and motor store on Cirby Way in Roseville. I called them, they confirmed they had the blanks and said it'd be around $6.00 per key ( I wanted 3 keys). I drove there and they were AWESOME. Just wanted to say how great this place is. You don't come across many brick and mortar locksmiths anymore and they were very fast, efficient and friendly! They took extra care when I tested the keys myself and one wouldn't turn over (despite me watching and seeing it worked before). They realized that the system was wiping the old key details every time they programmed the next one. Fixed that too! Just needed an additional key made for my fire safe, which I bought from Home Depot, years ago.

I tried four other places, including the big hardware stores, and not one could cut me a key for my padlock. Paul's Safe and Lock got the micrometer out, shaved a blank, and then cut a key that works perfectly in the padlock. This week, I went in because my car key fell apart. The locksmith noticed that screw was missing. He replaced the screw no charge. Businesses do not do that anymore. It ended up being mostly okay. The guy never was able to get my lock open. He gave me the combination, and I will try when I get time. But then he asked an adult what to charge for a "lookup". Fortunately the adult told the child that they would not charge me for failing to open the lock. I was getting ready to be really passed off. Even if they had succeeded, what were they going to charge to give me the combination for a $5 Master locker lock? If I owned the shop, that is the sort of thing I would do to win customer loyalty. If they had succeeded, I would not have minded paying a dollar or two, but I certainly would not have gone out of my way to return, either. After another auto locksmith was unable to program my new OEM Mazda CX-5 key fob (he claimed it was an "after-market" product), I considered returning the fob as defective. But first, I went to Paul's to see if they could get it to work. When I arrived, Danny immediately took the fob, said it was OEM, not after-market, and went out to my car. After 2 unsuccessful attempts (which reinforced my belief that the fob was defective), he did not give up but "did some more research" until he was able to successfully program it -- something about "pumping the brakes." Not only that, but the fob key cutting was much less than I was quoted because it did not require a laser cutter. SUMMARY: YOUR GO TO FOR PROGRAMMING KEYLESS REMOTES I spent nearly two hours at Sacramento locksmith shop waiting for them to reprogram a backup keyless remote (2017 Buick Encore). After two hours passed, I was surprised to learn I had purchased a used remote, therefore locked, and could not be reprogrammed. I contacted the supplier who was adamant the remote was new, but willing to ship a replacement. After all, they recommended the lock shop. I decided something was fishy. So, rather than wait for a replacement, I headed to Paul's which had recently been added to the supplier's list of recommended lock shops. What I surmised from my visit: Take your complicated needs to Paul's. Heck, take all your needs to Paul's. Why: The shop is a throwback. You will get old school customer service. One by one as they discovered me sitting in a corner of the shop, each staff member made eye contact and greeted me. When the wait lengthened, I was offered "cold water." Multiple customers (obviously repeat) greeted staff members by name and/or vice versa. I was provided continual updates as to their progress, and hiccups. Oh, and not to mention, they will actually FIX your problem. My problem: The other lock shop. First, Paul's checked the remote with a hand held device which indicated the remote was, indeed, unlocked and ready for programming. Several minutes into the programming, Paul's told me they ran into a problem. The vehicle's anti-theft alarm had been triggered. Long story short, the original shop that cost me two hours, did not know what they were doing and triggered a theft alert when attempting to program the wireless remote. Rather than 'fessing up, they pushed me out the door as fast as they could with a "you bought a used remote." Paul's tinkered, ultimately downloaded an app to assist with the anti-theft issue, and kept on. The were driven to fix the problem as if it was a fun challenge. Two more hours of my time passed, when ordinarily it would be about 30 minutes, BUT, I left the store with my car set back to normal and a programmed remote. They have a customer for life. read more
