See also reviews for Avis, because they are served by the same counter. We reserved a car at Avis at this location last year and after 90 minutes in line cancelled our reservation and went elsewhere. So this time we reserved at Payless, only to be back at the Avis counter. Waited over an hour. Three people working, with an average transaction time of about 15 minutes. About 15 stations and three people working on a Saturday. Tried to switch and there were no cars available anywhere else. I have used Avis in other cities without incident, so it just seems to be this location that is consistently awful. And then our car has seen some miles. Avoid Payless/Avis if you don't want to start your trip in a crabby mood. UPDATE: On the road in heavy rain and the windshield wiper is shredded and flapping. A little scary. read more

I live out of state and I rented a car at the Atlanta airport the last Friday afternoon in September. I drove the car to my meeting and when I left 3 hours later (or 6 hours after my pick up) the low tire light was on. The tire pressures registered 46/48/48/17. It was 10pm and I located a gas station in a possible unsafe area and I was able to fill to partially fill the tire. I contacted the emergency road service on my form and was provided with information to take the car in the morning to a service center to have it checked/Repaired. The car center the next morning informed me that the tire had 2 patches in it and it could not be repaired. I had the donut placed on the tire to attend my important meeting. I called back to customer service and was informed I could swap the car but I would have to return to the airport which was over an hour away from my hotel. Another option is that I could replace the tire up to $200 in value and submit it for reimbursement. The process for getting my refund back on the tire was lengthy but I did receive a credit. I received an apologize on 10/2 from someone at your company and was informed that they would "apply an adjustment of $125 to my rental in recognition of the trouble you encountered". This has not happened after I have sent four (4) follow up emails to this person at Payless/Avis. There is a major safety concern with have a car on the road with two patches in it. I am not pleased with my customer service with this company or the rental car which was not the one listed when I reserved the car. Also, the limitation in locations to return the vehicle was also not acceptable. read more

I made a reservation for a premium suv. I arrive at ATL and none are available. I agree to a suburban for $75 more a day to fit my family. I get to the car and driving it off site says the break pads are significantly low. So now I'm in Atlanta 30 miles away from the airport with a car I didn't want that has a potential break pad issue. How is it that I made a reservation, showed up exactly on time and could not get the affordable car I needed but had to pay for an upgrade? If I made a reservation, and the car isn't available, I should get the upgrade for free. And I'm in a car with a safety issue. Highly discourage. Many options at ATL. I flew into Atlanta today. Looking for Payless, I realized they were at the Avis counter. After a 45 minute wait I experienced Mr Mohammad. He was a slick counter person, that tried to sneak i hidden charges. After I called him out on his deceit, he deleted charges and mentioned how he took good care of me. I asked him for my receipt and he said it would be emailed. Haven't received proof of correct charges and I'm concerned I still may be taken advantage of. My confirmation #20347808US5. I secured the car with one card and paid with another. I didn't mind the deposit being taken out of the first card and the balance being charged to the second. After this terrible service, I'm concerned about Avis/Payless business practices. Unless I get a confirmation of charges by tomorrow morning, I'm sending a copy of this review to the BBB. Would give them no stars if possible. Rented a car at the Atlanta Hartsfield location on Tuesday Feb 6 '24. Made a reservation two weeks prior. Got there and had to wait 1.5 hours in their parking garage in 40 degree weather for someone to return a car. None of the employees cared - their response was - well someone else handles the cars. I so wish I had read these reviews before renting from Payless at the ATL Airport. Without rehashing all of the details, I showed up with a confirmed reservation. No cars available. Told me that I'd have to wait for 2-3 hours. As I tried to politely understand the situation by asking questions, the person behind the counter, Shawn, began to yell at me. When I asked him not to yell, he said he thought it would help me to understand since I hadn't heard him the previous time. While I was being abused by the person at Payless, two nice ladies from Alamo were discretely motioning for me to come to their counter. I walked over to Alamo and they had me in a car within 5-10 minutes. The Alamo employee told me that rescuing customers being abused by Shawn at Payless was a daily part of her job. Thank you, Alamo, for the incredibly courteous service. Most importantly, thank you to the kind Alamo employees who got me out of an abusive situation by the Payless employee. To be clear, I had a reservation with Payless for nearly a month in advance, showed up to pick up the car on time, and was told that I'd need to wait 2-3 hours for a car. If I could Rate as Zero stars, I would. The service getting the rental car was incredibly slow.. Then upon finally getting into line I was helped by a woman named Constance... She was nice... However had a cough that was a screaming Ebola or Black Plague...then her countenance changed upon asking me basic questions; to a very bitter lady. I said I had my own insurance and I would fill the car up with fuel myself. I always ask when renting a car, "if you would like to upgrade me for free I won't complain" so she said she upgraded me. Which i was grateful for. She didn't however mention she charged me. Evidently she must get commission or something for an upgrade. But that's not the best part the best part is- they put me in a chevy Cruze, Not an upgraded car by any means. They Cruze they originally put me in smelt like a Vegas hotel w smoke and death. I asked to have another car. They said the only car they have is another Cruze, not leather nor anything special. My bill upon making the reservation was 288.43 I called and extended my rental by three days. I was told it would be an extra 100.00 Upon return my bill was 574.00 Constance couldn't type one thing in her computer without asking for help. She said she told me there was an upgrade fee upon check in... I said "No- you're mistaken" she said no, that she had been doing her job 25 years. And doesn't make mistakes (Evidently 25 years doing a job doesn't get you a manager position) I kept my thoughts to myself but did say, "you were pretty sick when I rented the car." She then ignored me and pointed with her Dracula nails and asked for the next customer. The manager printed me my final bill. I would not ever use Payless car rental/ AVIS at the Atlanta Airport ever again, and I would advised anyone to never use that service . Unless you enjoy giving your money away. Those people are the most dishonest people . They will not give you a explanation for all the charges that they claim that you owe and if you bring the car back that you rented on a full tank of gas, they charge you anyway an falsely claim that you didn't. Never explaining why only apologizing that they did such a thing while not returning your money. My family and I rented a car from these unethical people for 3 days and was charged for 5 days , the day before we rented and today which is the day after it was returned on time with a full tank ???? Charged 900+, and charged our card repeatedly. Management so called apologized but offered no explanation and threatened to hang up ... oh , not to mention that the women at the counter was the rudest most unprofessional sales person ever . I guest that should have sent up a red Flag then. Maybe i'm used to mediocrity and I just don't know what it's like to rent at "fancier" places. I've used Payless Car Rental 2-3x while visiting Atlanta. I've never had any issues. They have the lowest rates consistently and i'm sure the adage is true, you get what you pay for. So i'm not exactly surprsied, when people have more customer service issues than the other major car rental companies. Again, usually i'm traveling on a budget and i'm usually reserving a compact car. I've had no car availability issues. On one horrific trip to Atlanta, my rental car got broken into, car window smashed and briefcase stolen. Police report in hand, I returned to the airport and they exchanged my Kia Optima for a Mazda SUV without too much of a hassle or questions asked. Worst experience with a car rental I have had in 20 years. I was approximately 1 hour late picking up my car because Southwest lost my luggage. However, when I got down there, they stated they gave away my car and had no other cars on their lot. Once the vehicle arrived approximately an hour after me waiting, the representative charged me twice the price since I was an hour late. Instead of my car rental being $135, it cost over $297 for the same exact car. Then when I picked up the vehicle, it was filthy dirty. They didn't even clean out the vehicle from the previous customer. Mr. Tate, the manager in Atlanta airport, who was supposed to be helping me, he was the one who charge me twice the rate for my rental. I will never use Payless car rental again. It's a scheme. The worst. First and last time using!!! When i arrived to pick up the car the counter person was very blas'e about helping the customer. I should have read the reviews prior to reserving a vehicle. Customer service has been the worst I've received from any car rental company. I was given an intermediate instead of the full size I reserved. The agent never made contact or informed me that I was receiving a smaller vehicle which meant smaller luggage space. Then the car sounds as if it is going to fall apart. Is is upsetting because I reserved the vehicle to drive 463 miles one way. This is the first and last time I will rent from any Payless/Dollar/EZ care rental facility. I do not recommend them no matter how much less expensive the cars are renting for. read more

Upon arrival at 1PM we were told it would be approximately 1 Hour before they would have a car available. The counter person pulled out a list and wrote my name and phone number on the waiting list. As we went and sat down on the wide window sill to wait others came up in line and it appeared they were told the same story?? After a while we went over to Alamo and got a nice mid size Jeep SUV and left the airport for 3x the rice we would have paid with Payless. This review is for their customer service with Amsaya. We arrived to the counter after our flight from Boston and realized we had forgotten our credit card but hoped our debit card would work for renting. We were dissapointed that it wouldnt and worried we would run in to the same predicament at every rental company. We walked away from the counter feeling defeated. A few minutes later as we were contemplating our next move, Amsaya walked over to us and said she contacted another company and found a similar car for similar price. She really didnt need to go that extra mile for us, but she did, and did it with a smile. She even walked us up to the counter. Amsaya's level of customer service is not often found these days, so when you come across good people like this, its so important that we acknowledge and appreciate them. Where is the 0?????? I reserved a car over a month ago for an 11am pick-up. I get to the counter and was told it would be a 1 1/2 hour wait, but to check with other car rentals.... What good is a reservation if you don't honor it? I stood in line for well over an hour on Saturday, July 1st; only to be jarred by the crass rep yelling in a horde of people "We outta cars!" So I understand some may opt to walk up and do a reservation and could be accommodated but why not make two lines (one for those with a reservation and one for walk up customers). I stayed as people made a mad dash to the other car rental companies nearby and asked the young lady at the counter what my option were. She told me to come back in an hour or so and they should have some cars coming in. She was unsure what kind but reassured me she'd call my cell. This earned the minimum 1 star rating and an overall 1.5 star rating. I left to go eat as my hanger was creeping up. As luck would have it, as soon as I started eating I got the call that cars had come in. Again, no knowledge of size, make/model available. She insisted that I finish my lunch and come back. I wasn't about to abandon my lunch to reintroduce fuckery into my life, so I finished and headed back. Upon my return she remembered me and began the paperwork. Now comes the bait and switch; the price given online was not what she presented to me. There were no offers of a complimentary upgrade, explanation on how/why they ran out of cars or a lot of concern given for the great inconvenience imposed upon customers. Not a fan of the gas guzzling car provided. It had a button to reduce gas consumption but when engaged it feels like life in the slow lane. Upon returning the car the attendant on duty provided a manager's card to allow me to voice my discontent with the process and people involved. Now I wait for the cookie-cutter email about how they are oh so sorry and thinly veiled effort to make things right by asking for copious amounts of information only to allow it to die in someone's inbox. For my upcoming travel Payless Car Rental is not an option and they are the newest inductees onto my one and done list. read more

This rental place SUCKS. I wish I would've gone on here and read these reviews prior to renting a car with them. Their prices are great, but it is not worth what you have to deal with. The car that I received was not on a full tank of gas. I notified the employee prior to leaving the parking garage and he made note of it and instructed me to bring the car back on half. I did as such. A few days after I returned the car (on half and as instructed), the company charged me $65.00 for fuel because it was not on full. A full tank of gas wouldn't have even cost that much. Absolutely ridiculous! I've been the calling the company multiple times to get this charge reversed and they have been giving me the absolute run around. I will not rent with them again. read more

I wish I could give it less than one star. I rented a car for the weekend and was quoted a decent price of $150 for the entire rental. I was scheduled to pick up the vehicle on Friday around midday. When I got there, the line was outrageous--it was a good 20 people long. I looked around at all the other rental car company's counters and realized that this was abnormal..there was literally no one else in their lines. They'd have someone come up, help them and that was it. However, I could already tell this experience would be different because there were already several customers on the phone complaining about failed bookings, lost reservations and more. One guy left the line and walked to another agency. I considered doing the same since I hadn't paid for my rental yet but I was afraid the other companies might be sold out since it was the weekend and I'd lose my spot and have to start all over at the end of the line with Payless. I stayed put. When I finally reached the counter, more than an hour later, the lady who was helping me seemed OVER IT. She wasn't rude but she acted like she'd rather be anywhere else. She acted like she was embarrassed to be working there.She spoke in a low and uninterested tone and I had to struggle to hear her. She told me that I had to show a utility bill to secure the rental. I've never, in all my life, had to do that when renting a car before, but I did it. Then I was quoted a new price of $222, for what I don't know, but, I was so ready to be done after waiting in line so long, I paid it and went to collect my car. Before I left the disinterested lady at the counter told me that because of my wait, I didn't have to bring the car back at 1pm like I chose to online when I made my reservation. She said that, for free, I could bring it back at the current time. Cool. When I got to the car it was nice and clean although it wasn't the vehicle I wanted, not even "similar" like they like to say but again, I just decided to go with it. I used the vehicle for the weekend and it served me well. I returned it with a FULL tank of gas but almost exactly an hour later...just like the lady at the counter told me I could. Of course, as suspected, this was not communicated or noted on my file I assume because I was still charged for the extra hour and more. All in all, the car that should've cost $150, ended up being $280 almost DOUBLE what I was quoted online. I am very displeased. Never again. Never again. Never again. read more

A midsize vehicle at Payless rental is like a compact or economy in comparison to other rental companies. After landing an hour late at the Atlanta airport I was told by the extremely rude gal at the desk that because i was an hour late due to my flight being delayed they gave my reservation away. She told me to wait 20min she'd find me a car... after waiting over an hour... I went back to the counter just to have this very rude individual tell me she didn't have car to give me because they were sold out and next time I should be on time. the entire experience was awful. I had a confirmed paid reservation for a car Sunday 5/28 and while in a line of 25 or so people they announce that they were out of cars and they would not have any for 45 minutes. When I asked about my confirmed paid reservation they reply was they only considered reservations through Payless.com real reservations. When I inquired with Expedia whom I booked it with they were perplexed as they showed I had a paid confirmed reservation. I will never use Payless car rental again under any circumstance and unless you don't mind standing around waiting and taking the chance of never getting the car you paid for I would recommend you find a better option as well. Unfortunately I'm adding one more to the list of those scammed by this Payless location - it's clearly either a corporate mandate or part of their culture. After clearly declining all additional options, I found myself with daily extra charges added to my card at the end for 'breakdown cover' I'd been opted in to. I already have comprehensive breakdown cover, why would I pay a rental car company for it!? I'm a frequent traveller with a decent amount of experience renting cars, but they still got me. The contract you sign & initial at pickup has these costs hidden DEEP - The line item I was charged for does not even line-up with the other items in the list - so unless you plan on getting off a plane & picking through a document crafted to mislead you to try & unpick/uncover dishonest scam charges, stay well clear of these rip-off merchants. read more

I believe this will be the last time I use this company for my rentals. I land in Atlanta and went to pick up my rental that was reserved months in advance. Come to the front desk, they tell me my vehicle is gone, doesn't give me any answer to when one would be available and wasn't willing to even offer me any help. I didn't mind paying money for a more expensive vehicle but that didn't seem to be an option even where there were cars available. I don't understand why they gave me a hard time.
