Absolutely terrible experience. I booked directly through the Routes website and received a confirmation showing a pay-at-pickup total of $118. After arriving at the airport, I spent 53 minutes on hold trying to reach the shuttle number provided in my confirmation email, then waited another 32 minutes for the shuttle itself. Once at the rental location, I waited in line for over an hour. When I finally got to the counter, the employee charged my card before allowing me to review the rental agreement. I was then shown a total charge of $274--more than $150 higher than my confirmed reservation price. When I questioned the discrepancy, the employee repeatedly told me to call Expedia. I had to remind him twice that I booked directly through the Routes website, not Expedia. Despite showing my confirmation email, I was told there was nothing they could do and that I needed to call customer service. I then spent another 55 minutes on hold with customer service without reaching anyone. After nearly four hours of delays, waiting, and getting nowhere, I left without a rental car and had to take an Uber instead. The staff's behavior was equally concerning. Employees were taking personal calls, using profanity and racial slurs, openly talking poorly about customers, and showing little urgency despite a line out the door. I have rented cars for years and have never had an experience this disorganized, unprofessional, or frustrating. I left with no car, no answers, and pending charges on my card. This is by far the worst car rental company I have ever rented from and are ripping people off. First, they falsely claim to renters that they must buy insurance from them. That isn't the case--most insurance policies follow the driver and not the vehicle. When I showed my insurance declarations, the pushy agent backed off, but I could hear other agents telling a different story to customers that were not aware of this. Second, they try to force a $30 per day cross border charge if leaving the state of Georgia, but this is not how the policy is written. It states: "Vehicles are not allowed to leave the state of the renting location without written permission otherwise, an out-of-state/state crossing fee will be applied up to $29.99 USD/per day." When asked about how I get written perimission, the agent said you pay the fee. I tried to explain to him that's not how the sentance is worded and then he said if I didn't incure they charge, I would be charged double that amount if I left Georgia. When asked where in their policy and contract that is stated, the agent couldn't answer (because it doesn't exist). When I asked to read the contract before I signed, the agent said I could read the contract only AFTER I signed it. I explained, "that's not how contracts work," but the agent insisted. In sum: Based on my interaction and observing other customers, I believe this business trains its agents to push unncessary charges that have no contractual backing. Given the primary customer base, I think this is to take advantage of a community that may not understand its rights and relents to the unnecessary charges. read more

Routes is a horrible business. My husband rented this car through Booking.com. The wait for us was 2.5 hours. People were being told they needed the Declaration page of their car insurance and a major credit card after they arrived on site. No manager came to help or inform people why the wait was so long. One of the employees said you didn't need a declaration all you needed was a credit card and driver license. When I went to pick up the car, they asked to see my airplane tickets. When I told them I lived in Atlanta they told me that I would have to pay a $1,000 deposit and for insurance even though I had already purchased insurance through Expedia. This type of information should be published up front and not hidden in a contract that is sent out once payment is received. read more

They will charge you $16.99 to go out of state, which is fine, however they will charge you for the days that you are not out of state as well and then state that there's nothing that can be done to mediate it. So i was charged for extra days I did not take the vehicle out of state so what was a $135 purchase tacked on an extra $103 to the reservation. This should be 0 stars. Our experience with this rental company has been incredibly disappointing. At the counter, we were only told about two insurance options and were never informed that we could use our own personal auto insurance. We only learned about this third option after the fact, which made us feel completely misled and taken advantage of. When we reached out to customer care, not only did no one acknowledge the omission, but we also never received an apology. Instead, we've been stuck in a back-and-forth email chain for days with zero accountability and no resolution in sight. As paying customers, we should never feel swindled or ignored. Transparency and honesty should be the bare minimum in the rental process, and unfortunately this company failed at both. We will not be renting from them again and hope others proceed with caution. Important FYI: Unlike every other Atlanta airport rental company, this is the only one where you have to take a tram to an offsite location. That isn't advertised clearly anywhere. The shuttle drivers themselves were kind, helpful, and pleasant to work with--they were honestly the only positive part of this experience. But once you reach the front desk, the transparency stops. Buyer beware: you must ask for every available option because they will not tell you. They only offer the options that cost extra. They took advantage and no paying customer should ever feel like that in a new town. UPDATE: After nearly three weeks of back-and-forth, with "Customer Care", there has still been no acknowledgment of this or even an apology. These people rock! My flight got delayed and I was worried if they closed and left for the day. However, the people stayed and finished serving everyone that arrived late due to the flight delays. They stayed calm and professional, keeping their smile and positive attitudes. Such an amazing people. The ONLY downside was the location. A bit far away from the airport, which was a bit of hassle, but they offer airport shuttle. They didn't have a car I wanted so I had to pay extra, but I didn't mind because their service was amazing. read more

The wait to return the car was long and the receipt took days receive after the person checked me out in person. But today took cake. Came at 6:25am on 6/13/25 and the person at front desk told me I couldn't rent the car because I wasn't leaving the state - that I had to have an itinerary in order to be able to rent the car. We chose because it was cheapest, but before you rent, you should know: -It's at least 5 minute shuttle ride to their facility, not including shuttle wait time. All of the other car rental companies are right at the airport in the rental car center. Routes is the only one that's an additional far shuttle ride away (after already riding 2 trams at the airport). Time is the most valuable thing that you have. -They put $500 hold on your credit card. I never heard of such a high hold. No debit cards. We had to add additional driver for added cost (she did discount that part) & make an immediate payment on credit card to lower balance to make room but not everyone will be able to do this if credit card payment takes at least 1 business day to process. -CarRentals.com was no help. They said to contact Expedia but gave no contact info for them. Next time, I will just book direct with the rental car company then & not use CarRentals.com not any 3rd party website. Lack of support. -They want your declarations page if you try to use your own insurance. They know that most people will not have this and try to force you to buy their added insurance. Use a credit card that covers rental cars. Other rental car companies simply ask for the name of your insurance carrier, not require you to have a copy of your policy & coverages?! -They want your roundtrip flight info. We booked a vehicle through Expedia at a quoted price of $146.17, which appeared to be the best deal available. Upon arriving at the Atlanta airport, we were directed by airport staff to wait in an area for the Routes shuttle. When the shuttle arrived, the driver rudely informed us we were in the wrong spot--despite being only 10 feet away from the Routes sign. Instead of assisting us, he repeatedly pointed out where the sign was in an unwelcoming and condescending manner. Once we arrived at your location, the attitude and behavior of your staff remained unprofessional. They applied undue pressure to purchase additional insurance, despite us explaining multiple times that we are covered through Allstate. Despite their claim of waiving the daily insurance fee, we were still charged for it, along with other miscellaneous fees that were never explained. What was most alarming was the misrepresentation regarding the $500 security deposit. We were told this amount would be held as a pending charge, but it was immediately debited from our account. By the end of this rental, our bank was charged nearly $900--an unacceptable discrepancy from the initial quote of $146.17. I would give this location zero stars if I could. First it took the airport pickup 30 minutes to get to me, then once I was dropped off at the car rental it was a list I had to sign my name on to be helped. I waited literally 1hr and 21mins before I was seen at the counter even though I had an appointment for pickup! It was FOUR people in front of me with 2 counter reps. The rep at the counter is also the person that has to find the car for each customer, bring the car to the front, and then have the person view the car and come back to sign documents before the vehicle is given. Of course they take their time through the whole process. The man in front of me was allowed to WAIT at the counter while he made multiple phone calls with his insurance company that took over 30mins, no one told him to step aside until he was ready. I was given a different vehicle than the one they had me sign for, I had to go back in after checking it out myself and noticing the discrepancy. The mileage was 9k more than the document I signed said it should be as well...it was corrected but again, another frustrating experience. Do not rent with this company. I'll keep it short. When you arrive, you will have a wait because customers all have the same questions about fees and insurance. I booked through Expedia and paid for the protection plan. Routes does not honor the protection plan because they want loss of coverage. I tried to use my Statefarm insurance which I was told that my full coverage policy couldn't be used. I had to pay for their insurance. Good news is that Expedia gave me a refund for the protection plan when I contacted them. Be prepared to give your flight details and the amount of people in your group. Also, be prepared for rudeness because 2 women seemed unprofessional when speaking to customers. I had a young man and he was very friendly and helpful. Although, they say unlimited miles, you will have to pay a fee to go to another state. Alabama is a 2 hour drive from Atlanta, so we wanted to take a day trip there. It's $16 a day for the length of the rental because they can't make it for one day. I paid 62 additional dollars to go to Alabama for a day. If you don't pay them and just decide to go, they will charge you double the amount. Before, I forget you have to take a train to the car rental location in the airport, but Routes isn't there. You must go downstairs and take a shuttle to the their location. Also, you don't get a full tank of gas. You get whatever gas is in there and you return the same. read more

Worst rental car experience ever! Pre-paid for a rental car from Routes, from a 3rd party. Should have viewed ratings and all routes negative reviews. Like everyone else, booked a good fair rate, however, when I got to the counter at routes Atlanta airport site, not only was the staff rude, but they didn't except my insurance policy. After speaking to my insurance company who assured me I have well enough coverage to rent from them. They rudely told me if I want to rent a car it would be an extra $39.99/day. The agent told me my personal vehicles needed enough coverage to rent the car they were renting to me, (doesn't make sense to me) but I assured them my personal cars are worth any car they had on their lot as they clearly saw on my policy. However, they were sticking to their story about me needing additional insurance. I called the 3rd party whom I rented the car to cancel my booking which they helped me. However, Routes put a $500 hold on my card which is still there a week after I didn't rent their car. Routes cancelation policy states, if someone cancels, or is refused a rental car they can only charge $75, however, they will take all your pre-paid money. (Customers who fail to cancel their reservation from the source it was booked at least 48 hours prior to pick-up time, fail to show up for their reservation, or do not qualify for the rental will be subject to a one-day rental charge or a $75.00 USD admin fee, whichever is higher.) Also their insurance policy states: If declining CDW, renter must present proof of coverage which includes the dollar amount covered. Be warned. Routes will not provide you with a car if you don't have a car insurance policy that can be transferred to their vehicle. I arrived to pick up my rental at Routes Atlanta airport office. When I explained that I have a worldwide car rental travel policy, they refused to accept it, even when I have used the policy to provide cover when hiring cars all over the world. I even used it in Orlando the previous week. The staff at Routes refused to give me a car unless I bought additional insurance from them. I have experienced some high pressure sales techniques when hiring cars, but I have never been made to feel like I have been conned. When I asked them to cancel the rental and refund my $240 they directed me to their customer service team and were totally unhelpful. Regarding the customer service team, they sent me a terse response which referred to the terms and conditions and refused to give me my money back. They didn't even address me by name. I was I bit apprehensive, as I'd heard horror stories on Yelp. That said, I was short on time and cash, so I took the plunge. Note-I did buy the extra insurance through Expedia, as I always do with cheap car rental places. Below is my experience: Arrival- I arrived 3 hours later than expected due to a delay, and yet both the shuttle and office were open (despite it being past their stated closing time.) They checked me out fairly quickly and had me on the road in my slightly dingy Nissan Sentra within about 15-20 min Departure-I was a bit nervous after no one inspected my vehicle upon drop-off, but I received my return confirmation email within 30 minutes and my deposit within 1-2 business days. Pros: 1. Definitely some of the cheapest cars at ATL (for good reason) 2. Check in and out weren't too bad. 3. Open 20 minutes after hours. (Probably due to two renters ahead of me with foreign licenses.) Cons: 1. Inconvenient and slightly grungy offsite location offsite that requires a shuttle. (Ask for directions at the airport!) 2. Cars definitely not pristine, and transmission was suspiciously jerky for a car with "18,000" miles on it. 3. They allegedly give a hard sell on the insurance. Long story short, they came through for me during a difficult time. That said, I would definitely have modest expectations , take pictures of the car, and pre-buy the stupid accident coverage through a booking website like Expedia so that they don't try to hard-sell you at the site. Although I received polite service from the ladies that got me checked in. That was the best part of the entire experience and I must say this was the first & last time I will rent a vehicle with ROUTES. There's far too many hurdles to renting a vehicle here... It is a mile+ away from the airport & you have to take two air trains plus their shuttle just to get to the rental center. Let's start there... First, never have I ever needed a $500 deposit on my credit card to hold a vehicle that was already paid for via a travel package... I've only had to- at most have $200-$250 on credit hold at Dollar/Avis/ Enterprise with reservation. While I'm told they "own their vehicles" - it does not mean anything to paying customers when they were given an original price & already paid for the rental. Having to jump up & transfer money to cover this excessive hold because it was damn near double what any other rental place charges; was basically an unexpected expense that really annoyed me. What if I was flat broke ATP?? I should've shuttled back to the airport and went to AVIS rental center and found an available vehicle but I had places to be. It was AFTER I've paid this excessive hold fee; I am gathering drop-off information because I had an early morning flight out & surprise, surprise- NOW they tell me- because they were not open at that hour & I would need to do a key drop off & then turn around and pay for an Uber to get back to the airport because there's no shuttle service at that hour. Oh- so just fill the vehicle up with gas, bring it back, then spend an additional $15-20 to get back to the airport... what?? Make it make sense. It begs the question, what's the point of renting a car HERE when there's clearly no convenience to doing so?? The nail in the coffin was the morning of drop off, the individual working seemed a little annoyed that he had to help me. This is not a nationwide- nor international rental center and I've NEVER heard of routes up until this trip. Let's be CRYSTAL clear, this just happened to be the lowest rate from a package trip from Priceline. This is likely a rental center for locals or those who can't get access to any other rental options. The morning of drop off- I was greeted with condescending tone & smart ass remarks from the time I rolled up- as if I should know where their drop-off parking is & to be that rude at that hour was insane. I've never received this level of terrible service from any other car rental place and I've had to rent a ton of vehicles before. It doesn't cost anything to be polite, especially since you're basically telling customers they have to spend more fucking money just to get back to the airport from that MF. I ordered an Uber to get back to the airport & a second worker arrived... in which they moved to the shuttle up front- so I am assuming they're about to start service; so I asked to be dropped off. He agreed & I canceled my Uber... but trip out--- he then turned around, hopped in his personal vehicle and left like he didn't just say he'd take me to the airport! This resulted in the person checking the car in having to take me via shuttle & it was VERY clear they were irritated about having to do so. The unnecessarily aggressive driving for a stop that's all of 3-4 minutes away & still ain't the airport- was a bit much. Professionalism should not be going out the window because of what hour it is, nor because you are having to do something for a customer due to your coworkers miscommunication. Direct your attitude toward THEM. It wasn't worth snapping on him ATP as I'm a lot smarter & just need to get to the airport for free-99. It's much easier to ignore the attitude & write this review to warn others that ROUTES ain't it. Ah yes--**the hidden fees**, which are truly a masterclass in deception. I booked through Expedia, which proudly stated "*all taxes and fees included*" and "*unlimited mileage*." What they *meant* was "Surprise! The agency is about to double your cost at the counter and after you've returned the car." Apparently, driving to *South Carolina* means you've crossed the Berlin Wall, because there's a "crossing borders fee." DAILY for your entire rental-- even if you just cross state lines for one day. Oh, and once you cross that magical line, your "unlimited mileage" turns into "LOL, just kidding. Daily mileage is capped and you'll pay by the mile". None of this was disclosed until I was standing there--jet-lagged, luggage in hand--getting nickel-and-dimed like it was their Olympic sport. When I (very politely, might I add) pointed out that this sounded a lot like false advertising, the manager hit me with the customer service equivalent of a brick wall. Curt, dismissive, and actually told me, *"All car rental companies charge this--others charge more."* Sir, a 2-second Google search could prove otherwise. Then came the cherry on top: even though they market themselves as an "airport" rental agency, they're **not actually at the airport**. You take the tram to the rental garage, then wait for a shuttle like you're signing up for a mystery tour. I thought, "Well maybe they'll make it up on the return trip and drop me right at the departure terminal." Ha. Rookie mistake. You'll be taking that same ride back like a regretful contestant on a bad game show. Their outsourced customer service? About as helpful as a chocolate teapot. This is not my first rodeo with Atlanta car rentals, and trust me--some of them are bad. This is the worst off site shuttle I've ever rented from. lets me list the issues: 1: the driver picking us up played vulgar rap music while having a minor child in the car with us to the destination of the rental company. *****we waited over an hour to get our rental!!!! 2. they never tell you that you need to have on have your auto insurance to prove you have renter cove or they will charge you astronomical fees ** we had our insurance agent on the phone and they were still trying to charge us for extra fees!!!!! 3. they never pick up the phone!!! our flight was delayed and we tried to call to let them know but they didn't pick up.. when we got there they tried to tell us we were a "no show" and they would have to "see what they could do for us" even though A Lot was full of cars! we called multiple times and they never picked up! no customer service at all!!! 3. When dropping the car off, we had an early flight, but we tried to call ahead of time to let them know that we are coming in by 6 AM to make sure that the the shuttle was ready for us and no one picked up the phone. The car I rented from Routes Car Rentals in Montreal through Economy Bookings was a good car at a good price. Pick-up was easy, and drop-off after hours was also relatively easy, although I needed to Uber from their location to the nearby airport. The negative is that they ignored their own contract. Instead of the "Mileage: Unlimited" on the contract, I was charged as a "customer with local driver's license - Mileage 200km/day", although I reside 4754 km away in the U.S.! Their responses to my two emailed complaints ignored that fact. I have not heard back, nor received the requested refund for the extra miles driven. The problem may lie with Economy Bookings, but neither outfit addressed my complaint satisfactorily. read more
