My husband went to pick up a car from the Philadelphia airport. He was trying to explain that we have 3rd party insurance from Expedia as well as liability insurance which lets you rent their car if it is local. However the white lady was rushing because her shift was over and said "I'm not listening to anything else you say. I already heard you. You can't rent it." But he didn't even finish what he had to say. Her shift ended around 3:00pm. She is racist and rude to non native people and so is anyone else who works there. Me and my wife had a reservation with Avis that was canceled morning of our trip. We were told to come and check out Payless Car Rental. THANK GOD! Cornell was absolutely the best! It was a very cold morning and when we walked in the first thing he did was set up a space heater for me. He took care of everything we needed while servicing another customer. Car would not start while we were visiting in PA. We phoned and had to speak with five customer representatives before being told that we needed to rent an uber and go to a auto shop to get the battery on the key replaced. We did this and the car still did not work. So, we left and took another uber back to the hotel. I phoned them and they put me on another phone to get the car towed. After waiting, the phone hung up on me (the 4th time). So, as of now, we have spent money on the uber to and from the auto store and to the hotel, ,the battery for the key ring, and multiple international phone calls from our I-phone which is Japanese. We now have no transportation nor any idea of having a new car, reimbursement for our costs, discount for the hours spent out of our vacation and no apology. If this is the customer service that I can expect when I use payless I will surely never use it again and am cautioning everyone else to know what you're getting into. read more

Talked to the manager Mike Marconi, what a J/O! First the place wasn't Opened so I had to wait in the freezing cold for them to open. Then this Clown said I couldn't rent with a Credit Card and Driver's License because I'm from out of state and I didn't have a return flight. I asked this A/H to point to the language in the booking for me. He couldn't answer. It's one thing to be out of cars, but it's totally different when you're pulling rules out of your tailpipe as you go along. This means I had ZERO chance of getting a car when I booked YET no possible way of knowing this in advance and this J/O couldn't understand this. The place is a total Rat Hole and if you're unlucky like me you'll end up dealing with this J/O Mike Marconi who's business code, In My Opinion , IS, "The Customer is ALWAYS WRONG!" You know this place is desperate when a Clown Like this J/O is in control. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this crumb joint! I NEVER gave a 1 star review in my LIFE! I needed a larger vehicle to move some larger items to my new house, and this was the closest and most convenient rental place. You can reserve a car/truck online but I called because I was on a time limit and wanted to make sure we got one for the day/time I needed it. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the van I rented was practically brand new with very few miles on it. The van was very clean and well maintained. Depending on the day you rent, the charge per mile is either .79 or .99 cents during a weekend. They offer a $10 insurance coverage plan in case of an accident that is so worth it. I highly recommend getting the coverage just in case. You do not want to be responsible or liable if something were to happen. They do ask not to leave the inside of the vans/ cars very dirty or they charge a mandatory fee of $250. I highly recommend them if you need a van to move for a few hours, fast friendly service. read more

They had the lowest price and they're close to me so I thought I'd try them out. Their website allowed me to place a reservation and prepay without requiring any insurance. When I got there to pick up the car they said I needed to pay an extra $16 per day for insurance. All of a sudden I wasn't "paying less" than Avis down the street. Guy said they're a franchise location and require it. I completely understand. But the website shouldn't allow people to waste their time and place a reservation that's prepaid for and won't be honored when they show up to pick up the car. The only positive was it was easy to get a refund from calling their customer service number. read more

Such a fantastic place to get a rental from. Customer service 10/10. I rate this place so highly because of Cornell. He is definitely will keep this place with excellent business. His customer service is by far the best I've experienced in Philadelphia. There were plenty of vehicles to choose from (all looked perfectly polished). The vehicle I rented felt brand new, fresh off the lot. Oil service was up to date. Mileage was extremely low. The interior matched the exterior: Heaven. I suggest everyone to rent from here. Cornell West has been very helpful & accommodating ..... Rates have been good (weekly rental).... Payless worked very well in that a major credit card was not needed as well as paychecks & Utility Bills were not needed (debit card & a deposit is required, which is OK)..... The rental vehicle is currently being used for a least a week and hope to maintain a 5 star review.... read more

Where to begin!... (April 20th) I planned a trip to Florida two months ahead of the needed rental so I jumped on Hotwire and I got a great rate, locked it in and confirmed with both Hotwire & PAYLESS ON BYBERRY ROAD, not the .com and not the 1-800...all was stated by both "CONFIRMED". ( June 20th) DAY OF PICK UP I was told that there is NO WAY that I would pay that price and I was laughed at for believing that I could...they stated I didn't leave a call back number to be reached so that adjustments could be made to the price( Which I did, my printout from two month ago had both number & email). they (manager and other worker) stated If I wanted the rental I would have to pay 5 TIMES the quoted price AND OUT OF STATE MILEAGE!!! When on the very confirmation it stated UNLIMTED MILES. I left and had to find another rental company...DOLLAR RENTAL at the airport who gave me a great deal. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND PAYLESS OR HOTWIRE...PS: Hotwire even "attempted" to charge me for this great service... read more

If I could give it less than one star I would. Rented and paid for a car a month in advance. went to pick it up and immediately when we walked in the door the person behind the counter said " We don't have any cars." There were already two people in the store. We stood there in disbelief. Then he said, "Do you have a reservation?" When we said yes he tried to say we made it thru a third party. When we proved him wrong he said, "Well I don't have any cars." Then proceeded to give two people that were there cars. These people didn't have reservations. He said he would call the airport store to see if they had any and we asked for the same rate. Airport didn't have any and if they did wouldn't honor the rate. Needless to say, since we were leaving the next morning, we had to hunt around for a rental car and pay a premium rate because it was a last minute rental. Never, I repeat, never use this company. BEWARE: Made reservation online with the P1L NE Phila location, somehow two reservations was made due to a glitch with payless system. I only notice this as I check my bank account religiously, called them up as soon as possible thinking they can fix this no problem. Come to find out I have to wait 3-5 business days to get this extra almost $200 back from their mistake, I only had one confirmation number so who did I make two? And I had to pick the car up in 2 days not 3-5! Supervisor was nice but no help besides telling me my deposit was $100 when Ashley I spoke with a few hours prior said $200!?! Granted the prices were low but the hassle was ridiculous, I kept explaining the deposit was taken so how can you expect me to have the deposit at pick up? Asked can you just make the funds taken the deposit, no because it was an automated system. Just beware of booking online and some of the rude ass philly workers-Jason put me on hold while I was still speaking because I asked for a supervisor (like thats illegal) and was rude while I kept pleasant, even kept saying I am not trying to be rude or difficult multiple times! This is the absolute worst car rental company ever. I reserved a full size car at the Philadelphia PA location. I had to wait 45 to an hour outside in 30 degree weather for the shuttle. After I called to see if a shuttle was coming mine you other rental companies had passed 5 to 6 times. The lady (Susan) as I asked her name was more than rude and hung up before I could complete my questions. That was the first red flag. I get to the place and it takes another 20 minutes for her to rent a car to the person in front of me. I get to the counter and she tells me they don't have any full size cars. I asked what was the purpose of making a reservation? She rudely asked me "what kind of car you want?" I responded the kind I reserved. The absolute worst Coustmer service ever!! I ended up asking to catch the shuttle back to the airport so I could find a rental. This set me back 2 hours. Never ever again will i rent from this company. I will file a complaint with BBB only to see they rated them an F for there business practices!!! I see why!! read more
