After 3 years of trying to find an exterior painter for our house, we got an early start this spring and called Payless Painting (a family-owned business that was recommended on our local community's Facebook group), and wow, were we impressed! Mathew was responsive, prompt, and the picture of professionalism, from the initial visit and estimate to job completion. We received daily updates, often with photos, describing what was completed and what to expect the next day. Mathew also managed subcontracting and invoicing for home improvement projects related to the painting job (drywall and siding repair, door replacement) and was well connected with other local, reputable contractors whom he recommended for non-painting related projects. Everything was cleaned up and all trash disposed, both daily and at the end of the project. In terms of cost, their bid was very reasonable amidst a very wide range of estimates (3X difference from lowest to highest!), and they finished under budget and within the predicted timeframe. Not only were we impressed with the quality of work, but we found Mathew to be extremely personable, down to earth, and easy to talk to. His crew was friendly, hardworking, and professional. (Bonus: complimentary color consultation was provided by an experienced color consultant before the project started!) We just had Payless paint our house in Orinda for the second time. Please see my previous review. Don't let the name fool you. This is anything but a discount or second rate painting contractor. This is a top flight, first rate painting business with incredible attention to detail. They are the standard against which all painting companies (and indeed all contractors) should be measured. They are really that good. Mathew has now assumed responsibility for running the company, and like his dad, Ken, Mathew is cut from the same "the customer is everything and always comes first" cloth. Their crews are just fantastic and so nice to have around the house. And the fact that so many of them have been with the company for years tells you everything you need to know about the company and how it treats its employees. I've used many contractors over the years for all kinds of work and, although excellent, I always measure them against Payless. As I mentioned, their work is outstanding in every respect, but so also is their communication and their entire business ethos. They just get it on every level. Payless painted the exterior of our home four years ago. I have waited until now to write the review because most paint jobs look good when they are fresh but how they look after several years is the true test of quality. The stucco exterior of our home was badly cracked and the existing paint very worn. Payless used an elastomeric paint and not a single crack has become visible in the last four years. I am a do it yourself kind of gal - except when it comes to painting the exterior of my house. That job is just too big for me. Family Owned Company - which is a plus From beginning to end they were super professional. The owner was always on site with the entire crew working just as hard. Holy Smoke were they fast! I do have a small house but it only took three days not including the power wash that didn't take long at all. Scraping, sanding, priming, cocking and painting was going on from 8am to 4pm at all times in every corner of the house. The crew were super happy - even singing on the job :) Love that! read more

Payless Painting did a great job rehabilitating the exterior of our late 1950's Eichler home, not only through a super paint job, but with their thorough process of cleaning, prepping, protecting, filling and patching cracks, replacing rotten siding, and doing light handyman work related to the project. Mathew, the owner/manager is very easy-going, reasonable, and a good communicator who always kept us in the loop as to timeline and issues, as well as providing us with daily updates as the project was in progress. Favian, our foreman, was our point of contact on the job site. He is a many of many skills and a good supervisor. The entire team was very congenial and professional. Not only that, but this well-established company (over 50 years in business!) doesn't charge top dollar. True to their "pay-less" name, they came in with the lowest of three quotes but still did a first class job. We are bringing them back to do the interior of our house in a few weeks. They were used through my Contractor, and did a marvelous job! Fast and efficient, got the jobs done quickly. We had multiple rooms inside painted along with having our exterior painted. All done in a timely fashion along with all the other construction happening around them. Always pleasant and courteous of our privacy and putting up with our dogs too! Hired this business to paint the rest of my home 2 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and 2 very high stairwells (I live in a 3 story home). They did an excellent job and finished in about 1 day. Hired this company several times and on the plus side they arrive on time, work efficiently and are technically quite good at painting and they clean up after themselves. Their bids are usually competitive. On the negative side you can't count on them to use the paint brand or color you request, they try to make do with one coat of paint when two is necessary to get proper coverage/color and then they argue with you about it. Test patches revealed the true colors so I'm not guessing about this. They also gave a bid for our family room and midway through the job pressed me to accept no paint on the wall behind the entertainment center. Of course, it needed to be painted so I insisted and they painted it. Too much hassle! read more
