John J Andre, DDS & Associates, Louisa, VA. My husband and I were faithful patients of a dental…read morepractice in Northern Virginia for at least 15 years, and hoped to establish a similar long-term relationship with a local dental practice when we moved to the Louisa area. We selected the John J Andre & Associates primarily due to its location and the fact that they accepted our MetLife Dental Insurance (federal employee plan). We were both patients there during the 2022-2024 period. During that period, we had multiple visits, including regular (every 6 months) oral examinations and cleanings, and we received fillings and other dental procedures. We decided to leave the practice in late 2024. Some observations about our experiences follow. *Teeth cleaning. There was only one dental hygienist. We both felt that our cleanings were rushed and he never gave us the thorough, deep cleaning of other dental hygienists in our joint experiences. *Dentists. The dentists appear to be competent, and our appointments included what would be expected (bitewing and panoramic x-rays, cleanings, examinations, etc.). That said, the examinations were also relatively quick. The results of one expensive (even with insurance) dental procedure for me at Andre and Associates were very disappointing. Years ago, I chipped a front tooth that another dentist "filled"; the result lasted for about ten years but eventually chipped off again. A dentist in Andre and Associates re-fixed the tooth. It looked beautiful on the day of the procedure but broke off again about two weeks later. (I've since had it fixed again at another practice in Louisa County, and it seems to be holding (16 months in). *Office environment. There was sufficient and free parking on-site, and the waiting room and restroom were clean. We were generally greeted by one of the staff at the front desk, and seen by the dental professionals relatively quickly. Even after going to the practice for a few years, we were never greeted by name nor did any of the staff or dentists seem to recognize us. Also, there was a lack of privacy in the examination area, with staff members (not the dentists) talking to each other while performing dental procedures. *Billing. In spite of being a participating dental practice with our dental insurance, we had consistent hassles getting our bills reconciled from day one. From the insurance company's perspective, they claimed that the requests for payment weren't being submitted. The dental office claimed that they were submitting them but insurance was slow to pay. From the patient's perspective, it was a huge hassle because we would be getting bills from the dental office that should've been paid by insurance and having to do line-by-line comparisons for, at times, old charges. (Note that we had been using the same dental insurance in northern Virginia without any problems). The final kicker? We left the practice, and MANY, many months later got a bill for an exam/cleaning that my husband had received earlier. I checked the EOB from the insurance carrier and learned that they had requested additional information from the dental practice that apparently had not been sent. I sent the EOB to Andres' office. They sent the requested info to the insurance company, where it was denied because too much time had elapsed. So, without contacting us again, Andre's office sent the bill to collections. To make matters even worse, we were billed the full amount rather than the negotiated amount for a participating provider that would've been paid by insurance if it had been submitted within the window for submissions. Wanting interactions with this office to be done with, I paid the full amount out-of-pocket. (For context, we are an older retired couple who have NEVER had a bill sent to collections in our entire lives, until this incident). *Social Media. There was a sign at the check-in desk that irked me. It encouraged patients to leave a 5-star rating on social media in order to be entered into a regular drawing for a water pik. I assume that reviewers who gave less than a 5-star rating would not be eligible.

Dr. Williams was out of town at a seminar so his retired business partner, Dr. Myers, took care of me. I'm always nervous seeing a dentist, but especially one I've never seen before. The office staff was so sweet and comforting and I helped a lot. The dental assistant instantly put me at ease and was extremely friendly and caring. Dr. Myers was fantastic! He didn't rush it and told me what was going on the whole time. He said my tooth was a strange shape and he had to do some finagling to get the wedges and other thingamabobs placed correctly so the filling wouldn't come out again. At one point he said, "this is a challenge... And I like a challenge!" I could instantly tell after we were finished that the filing was in far more severely than it had ever been before. He made sure my bite was perfect, also. I would absolutely see Dr. Myers again. He fills in when Dr. Williams is gone. I've heard that Dr. Williams is fantastic, too. I would feel very comfortable visiting this office again no matter which dentist was available.

While the dentists and hygienists are extremely professional, skilled, gentle, and provide great care, the administrative side is an absolute disaster that treats patients with zero respect. This office is engaging in a retaliatory "bait and switch" by canceling my young daughter's necessary dental appointment without any notification or warning because of a billing discrepancy on my completely separate account. It is disgusting and shameful to target a little girl and withhold her healthcare over administrative delays, unbilled disputes, clerical errors, or passive-aggressive text messages involving a parent's account. My daughter and I have entirely different insurance policies and separate accounts, yet they are punishing her and actively hindering her medical progress while she is in braces and urgently needs a tooth capped to continue her orthodontic care. When confronted about the status of her specific insurance, the office dismissively and disrespectfully told me that filing insurance is merely a "courtesy" and that it is my job to pay, investigate, resolve, and figure out the balance immediately if a claim hasn't returned. I have informed this office several times that I have never even received a formal bill, yet they would rather send demanding, rude, aggressive, and unprofessional texts than conduct honest business. If you value your time, your family's dignity, your children's health, or basic professional decency, stay far away from the administrative nightmare and predatory collection tactics at this office.

I want to be clear that, in my experience, Dr. Arafa and his team are NOT the same as Dr. Mahmood and his team. I gave Mineral Dental Care another chance and unfortunately brought my 79-year-old mother there for dental care. After only one visit, she was presented with a treatment plan totaling $17,805, including dental implants and eight extractions. My mother is 79 years old and has diabetes, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and high blood pressure. Given her age and medical history, I was extremely concerned that such an extensive treatment plan was presented after a single visit and questioned whether less invasive or alternative treatment options had been adequately considered. She was given an estimated out-of-pocket expense of approximately $10,000. While that is still a substantial amount of money, the difference between the total treatment cost and the estimated patient responsibility was significant and raised additional questions for us about the proposed treatment and costs. What was even more concerning was what happened after the appointment. My mother was recovering at home without the antibiotic that had been prescribed because the prescription was written incorrectly. The pharmacy contacted the dental office for clarification, but more than eight hours later, the issue had still not been resolved. There was also NO after-hours number available for us to call for assistance. This left me in an extremely difficult position, trying to care for my elderly mother at home while being unable to obtain medication that had been prescribed to her. For a patient her age with multiple underlying medical conditions, I find the lack of timely communication and after-hours support particularly troubling. Overall, I am deeply disappointed by this experience and by what I perceive as a lack of appropriate consideration for my mother's age, medical history, and individual needs. I have difficulty understanding why a more conservative or alternative care plan was not discussed with us, if one was medically appropriate. I am sharing this review because I believe patients should feel confident that their treatment options are being presented transparently and that their concerns will be addressed promptly; especially when caring for an elderly patient with significant health considerations. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I can no longer recommend or endorse Mineral Dental Care.

During the appointment I pointed out where the pain was. Dr Andre's only comment was that "oh you don't want to do anything there. It can get very complicated". His assistant painted the tooth that appeared to be the source of the pain. It felt better and that was it until Dr Andre suggested that I had 4 cavities. Apparently, he saw them on the xrays. I found that difficult to imagine since I haven't had a cavity in lots of years. 4? He filled them and I went to the front desk. The receptionist said the bill was $562 and would I like her to file the claim with the insurance (Medicare and UHC)? I said yes and didn't hear anything more until I received an invoice for $1700+. I asked for the details and eventually got them. The cavities were then stated at $900+, and the Medicare was almost $400 for xrays and cleaning. They also showed $78 paid by Medicare. I wrote that I was told that the paint on the painful tooth was a trial, but bill for it anyway. They agreed to credit that charge. The paint fell off the next day. I then wrote that I would pay the bill with $25 per month until paid in full, but the office has yet to cash any of the checks and I have been notified to appear at a Warrant in Debt at a General District Court. The V.A. doesn't provide dental care for veterans. They recommended that I call PRDC, "a non-profit clinic that provides affordable, high quality dental care." I was told that they serve everyone, from low-income families and retirees, to Vets. I find that their admin assistants, Cari and Cheri, to name two, are patient, helpful, knowledgeable, and like what they do. Regarding my actual treatments, I can only speak about Morgan and Dr Williams. But I can say that those two will treat you with a level of care and kindness that I'm sure they do their own family members. Smiling (behind their masks), positive and upbeat, they assessed my somewhat complicated issues, presented me with all of my options, and together we came up with a plan. I couldn't be more satisfied. I have to say, even the dental assistants, doctors and staff that I passed in the hallways were engaging and pleasant. Their default seems to be to have a calming effect and minimize the fear factor, for children (and adults!) It's obvious that they all believe deeply in their mission. If you haven't been able to afford the high cost of dental insurance and/or the extreme prices typically charged by most dental clinics, call them. Tell them Scott from Ivy, in Albemarle County sent you! 2/6/24
