So much to love in this store! It offers everything from A to Z, including meat. Real meat. Tasty…read moremeat. And fresh farm eggs, too. Gifts for all ages, home decor, soap, candles, kitchen towels, hair clips, toys, cooking utensils, just to name a few of the items. Many of the items are hand crafted by talented people in the Crawford County area. The store is easy to find on the square across from the courthouse. Parking is free. Exit the highway and check it out. This is a small family-owned business. Be kind and pay cash, if you can.

This review is for the meat. The store is very nice, but I'm a cook, so my interest is I. The…read morefreezers at the front of the shop. I've purchased several ribeyes a couple of fillets, pork chops, stew meat, ground beef, breakfast sausage and both pork and beef brauts. As far as the steaks and chops go, they have been EXCELLENT every single time. Most people are use to grocery store beef which is corn fed. The Painted Barrels beef and pork are family raised and pasture fed locally, and the freshness just stands out! I've never had anything that wasn't perfectly tender and flavorful. The meats always cook nicely both on the grill and in a pan. The sausages are far more flavorful than anything you can buy from corporation, and you can REALLY taste the freshness in the ground beef. The meat is very fairly priced for the exceptional quality, and in my opinion, very reasonable. Can you find cheaper meat out there? Yes... but life's too short to eat Walmart steak, and why not support a small business? It is my plan to start buying pretty much all my beef and pork from Painted Barrels.

Step back in time to browse around the antiques of furniture, glassware, crocheted items, books,…read moreconcrete statues, and more. The old-fashioned candy cart is loaded with goodies. The owner has written a book about Girard and what life was like growing up there. I found it to be an interesting read because I visited Girard as a child to visit my grandma, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Ask about consignment sales for those things you want to part with but need a nice place to sell them. Stop by the homemade ice cream counter in the corner of the store and enjoy a yummy treat. I was there one day when the high school baseball team stopped in for some ice cream. Such nice young men enjoying their time together. Another time a group of teenagers were sitting on the front porch visiting. Such a refreshing sight to see no phones, just conversation! Check-out the bathroom walls! This is a store for all ages. A place for learning, reminiscing, and to purchase those things you have been seeking for a long time. It's a small business so cash is always appreciated. Located on the Girard square across from the courthouse. Parking is free right at the front door. There is also a ramp for easy access. Inventory is constantly changing so stop in often!

This is a review of the retail store only and not the bistro…read more We have often driven past Sandstone Gardens on our way to Missouri. We have never stopped. Lucky for me, it is open at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning as I breezed through Joplin. It's a formidable looking fortress but just be brave and open up one of the massive brown doors. (Entrances aren't really labeled.) I ended up entering through the bistro area. The home decor and kitchen items are maybe a bit pricey but not outrageous. The concrete sculptures (which they make on site) are fantastic. If you want to purchase one, just take a pic of it and they will secure one for you at the check out area. There's also baskets by the check out that you can place all your wares in and no one else can shop through them. But back to the sculptures...they are pretty reasonable and of good quality. If you buy one, you must drive to the back of the property where they make them to pick them up. This would be a five star review (for the retail store) if they had been a bit friendlier and helpful. Maybe we will have time for lunch sometime and up this to five!

Really great food, wonderful deserts and the shopping experience is great. But call ahead and…read morereserve a table. The wait can be hours on weekends. Hers my only really complaint. We did show up on a recent Saturday when they were packed and were told the wait was about 45 minutes. Well that was okay because there is so much to see and do shopping there. I love this place and can always find things I wish we had in our house. Interior decorators and people who like interesting decoration things for both inside and outside the home should have a good time exploring this decorating wonderland. However, we came back multiple times after one hour (remember they said 45 min). and were repeatedly told we were next. About two hours after we arrived were were finally seated. I balme the customers a bit, there were many tables with people hanging ut waiting mostly for wife to finish shopping. So basically people would come in for lunch, hand out with family and friends and time up a table for hours. Long after they are done eating they continue to sit there and wait while some of the group goes out to shop. I find thse really rude and surprised that the owners don't suggest to people that they hand out elsewhere. Like the many places to sit outside. I get that it puts the owners in a difficult situation because they want to sell decorator stuff. However, they really need to figure this out and find some way to move people off the tables and hanging out somewhere else. Once seated the food was generally good but we didn't have the best waiter the last time we came in. Constantly forgetting things bringing out things wrong, not refilling water, forgetting table setting after asking several times, etc. Although we will come back as everything is good I won't bring a group, just my wife and I and I will not come without planning on loosing half a day waiting for a table, then service. All in were were there four hours! When we really dropped in for lunch.
