I scheduled an appointment for my oldest child, as a follow up to having a tooth extracted in our previous state. Upon entering the office we were pleasantly surprised to see his name displayed on an a-frame sign, welcoming him as a new patient. How thoughtful! I've since returned with my younger two children for cleanings & for follow up visits for my oldest. My entire crew enjoys visiting this practice! Staff has been consistently friendly & helpful. Hygienist and doctors are skilled & knowledgable. They have provided quality care and ongoing clear communication. Paperwork is complete online prior to appointments or in-office with a tablet. The waiting area are child friendly & fun -- complete with arcade style game machines (Pac-Man, Stargate, Galaga, Multicade) and sit-on monster trucks. Today I received a "Final Notice" text from Brock's Gap Dental Group threatening to send me to collections over a $35 past-due balance. When I called the office, I learned the charge was a late-arrival fee for an appointment in 2024. I didn't miss the appointment -- I was simply a few minutes late -- so they billed me $35. I asked for the "late fee" to be removed and they refused. It's disappointing, but they've lost a patient over a ridiculous policy and $35. I would recommend considering other dental offices in the Hoover area that take a more reasonable, patient-focused approach. read more

The heart of a dental practice isn't made from sticks and bricks and stones; it's made by human beings who control the type of experience that we have each time we walk through their doors. Not many people understand what it's like to parent a special needs child. In our case, every day is different and many times good oral hygiene is a struggle, leading to many, many teeth and gum issues. We have taken our daughter to over 20 dentists in the Birmingham metro area (yes, early on, we called UBA and the wait was a year for anesthesia), and Brocks Gap is THE ONLY DENTISTS who were willing to save our daughter's teeth. THEY CARE. Dentists, hygienists, DAs, managers, receptionists, etc. are there to help, but this is how they feed their families and they must be paid (this is a finger shaking to the negative reviewers who are angry that they charge a late or no-show fees). They went above and beyond to help a middle-class family who did not have all the funds to give their daughter a new start with her teeth. They are working with a new company that doesn't focus on credit score allows patients to make monthly payments for dental work, so if you think you can't afford to go to the dentist, give them a call. They have so many options for struggling families just like us. If you have a fear of dental work, you can even request anesthesia, which is a must with our child, who has extreme anxiety and could not tolerate the time sensitive and lengthy dental care she needed. If you have a child who is autistic, you will be in VERY SAFE HANDS at Brocks Dental. We will be letting families everywhere know that there is a dental facility that can care for the whole family, but ESPECIALLY our autism babies who need the kind of care that they give. We will never, ever forget the compassion and empathy given by each person who makes Brocks Gap what it is, a place where parents are not judged, and a true love of children and their well-being is so very apparent. Thank you to everyone who has greeted us with a smile, understood when we needed to reschedule due to melt downs or blown tires (we drive over an hour to them, because it's worth it). given patience to a very sensitive 16 year old and still helped us when Mom has had stress induced breakdowns. My son is almost 5 and has been going here since his first dentist appointment. This office has everything I expect in a good dentist office and it seems like a great relaxing environment for children. I have been really pleased with the work of everybody here. Lauten performed dental surgery on my child to insert crowns on several of his teeth, including four of his front teeth. People comment all of the time on how great his smile is. We love to see his smile and Thank God so much for how awesome Dr Lauten and all of his staff has been and how great their work is. The last time we were in, Paige did an excellent job cleaning his teeth. We will continue to be bringing our child here and know that if anything beyond the regular tooth cleaning comes up that they are excellent at everything they do! They will nickel and dime you. My children have been seeing Dr. Johnson their entire lives (oldest is now 12), and previously we have been happy with them: Dr. Johnson and the dental hygienists are very good with children, and the kids actually like going to the dentist, which is fantastic. My issue with this business is not the medial services, but rather with the business manager. We had 3 appointments for 1PM. I experienced unexpected delays checking my children out from their schools, as it took much longer than it ever has before at both schools to check them out. I saw that we would likely be a few minutes late, so I called the office and spoke to Emily to let them know we were on the way. Emily was polite and professional and advised that if we were more than 10 minutes late, they would give the slot to the next person in the waiting room, which I understand. We walked through the door at 1:14pm. At 1:15pm the receptionist told me that we would need to reschedule, unless we wanted to wait around indefinitely on the off-chance they could fit us in later. Again, I understand that completely. A family with 3 appointments at 1:30 arrived at the same time we did and were taken in immediately. Cool, I understand that's how it works. Where I take issue with this business is that the receptionist then told me that we would need to pay a $90 fee in addition to the regular co-pays. I would understand this if we had simply blown off the appointment and not shown up, or if we had not called prior to the appointment to let them know we were running late, etc. I asked if this $90 fee could be waived. I explained that my children had been patients there for several years now, and that from a customer service standpoint, maybe the value of our business over that time would be worth more than the $90 surcharge on this one occasion. She told me that was their policy, end of discussion, and that I could speak with a manager. The manager then came out. I attempted to reframe the issue, so that she might see how it appears that they are nickel-and-diming their patients and that the amount of money that we and our insurance company have spent at their business over the past decade should count for something in this calculation, not to mention the amount of money that we (with our insurance company) would happily continue to spend at their business over the following several years. The manager told me that there was nothing they could do except charge me the full $90 fee, in addition to the regular co-pays. This was not negotiable, and they would not offer any discount at all on this $90 fee. After seeing that this is how they regard their patients from a business perspective -- nickel and diming us for every penny they can get out of us -- I am taking my business elsewhere. read more

This was a new dentist we wanted to use. Mostly because it was closer for us to get to. We have a 4 year old boy was ready for a check up. We were completely floored by this place. Everyone was super nice, professional, very clean, and very kid friendly. They have a great lobby with iPads and A Wii and a Disney movie playing which is 100x better than what most places have on their Tv's). I was expecting our first time to take some time, but it really didn't. We were waiting maybe 10 minutes before we were called up. The Dentist and assistants knew how to get our nervous little guy calm and in great spirits. When we left, our son actually said "When can we come back to the dentist?" Was a great visit! read more

I found this dentist office online after reading a poor review for a dentist office that I had an appointment with for my son. I'm so thankful that I read the negative review, and continued to look for another office! This office has the best staff, from the ladies up front to the hygienist, to the dentist. What appealed to me most about this office was the appointment setter. She was very friendly, and gave me lots of information about the office and what my son would experience during his first visit. This dentist encourages you to go back with your child. This was important to me. This was my 3 year olds first dentist appointment, and I learned that several offices do not let you go back. I think 3 is just too young to go on your own, but that is simply my preference. The hygienist encouraged my son to make a hand print on a ceiling tile, and then they write the child's name under it. This simple touch made his first impression of the office fun. I am assuming they will use the tiles in their new office as we were informed they a building a new facility just down the street. I was able to sit with my son, and they let him sit up on this visit to have his teeth cleaned and flossed. They did a floride treatment and he received a small toy when we were done. The experience was great! This dentist is a bit of a drive for me, but totally worth it! read more

BY FAR THE BEST DENTIST I HAVE EVER GONE TO!! Both of my kids have never been to the dentist and they are 2 and 3. I was terrified that it was going to take forever and that my kids were going to be terrified! We were in and out in 50 minutes!! That includes filling out new patient paperwork, both kids getting a cleaning, discussing our options with our youngest's teeth and needing to go under anesthesia for her dental work, AND fixing my oldest's cavity! My 3 boys have been seeing Dr. Johnston for 3 years. He and is staff are very friendly and professional. They always get all 3 in at the same appointment time and on time. Minimal waiting if ever and are efficient when doing the exam. They have a creative way of welcoming new patients by taking their hand print after dipping in paint and making ceiling tiles to decorate their office. Each of boys look forward to having their cleaning every 6 months. They enjoy the staff and always seem to leave with a smile and a little something extra. we have been patients here for 12 years. We have never been late and on many occasions waited a long time to be seen, which is expected at an doctors office. Today it was raining and we were running behind. 6 minutes after our appointment time the office called and asked if we were still coming. They asked if we could be there by 1:40 and we said yes. At 1:40 we pulled in and called from outside. they told us to come on in, but after we got all the kids out in the rain, the office girl told us we were late and could not be seen. After several minutes of trying to understand what was happening, they still refused for me to talk to the doctor or have my kids seen for a quick cleaning- especially since 3 of them have small mouths and don't get a full cleaning yet. It was heartbreaking to be asked to leave for being 10 minutes late one time in 12 years. I would assume that most parents are trying their best, and to be strung along for a office who is willing to be flexible is hard. If you know you can always be on time, this is the place for you- but it's only one sided though, so prepare yourself. I am disappointed that they Handled this like this. i understand the need for the policy, but to string us along until we got all the way inside was wrong and the manager had a terrible attitude. Jessica was so great making our 2 year old's first dentist appointment be an amazing experience. The movie playing everywhere was great and all the Mikey Mouse decor was great too! Jessica showed our son every tool she was using before and let him "play" with it before putting it in his mouth. He smiled and laughed, it was so much better than we were expecting!
