We were in Wynnum today while the inaugural Wynnum Seafood Festival took place, but by the time we arrived there throngs of festival-goers queueing up for over 5 mins just to get a feed. My sister and I weren't too impressed. By chance we decided to stroll down to the esplanade and have a wander around and came across this little gem. It seems a lot of other ex-festival people had the same idea and decided to escape the crowds and have some seafood by the sea shore. While it was super busy at the Pelican's Nest and all the outdoor seating was taken, we ventured inside to find there were no queues and we could order straight away (no 5 mins waiting in line!). We ordered the 'Treasure Chest', were given a buzzer and went outside to wait. Food was ready in under 10 mins and we decided to take away our food and walk over to the esplanade and sit in the park to enjoy our feast. The food was delicious - fish was super fresh and flaked away nicely. We also really enjoyed the prawn cutlets - nicely butterflied and cooked to perfection. I also really like the fact that the meal came with a proper side salad. All in all it was a lovely meal, and was definitely the highlight of today - after the disappointment of the festival. read more

We were going to go to the other fish n chips shop down the street, but they were closed. In fact, most of the shops were closed as it was a Monday, so we were only left with this option. The take-away shop has outside seating and it was extremely busy on this beautiful day. We waited about 10 mins to order and when we got up front, we put our orders in and went outside until our name was called. The plates weren't terribly expensive. Average was $17 each for a calamari and chips, a cod fish n chips, and a whole fried sea bream. Food was hot and fresh and for a take-away place, it was decent. Best part is the park across the street leading towards the Wynuum jetty. You can choose to have your food take-away and eat at the end of the pier. read more

Wynnum Esplanade and the foresshore from Wynnum North to Lota is amazingly popular with the good people of Brisbane. Historically speaking (I mean horse and cart days) a day trip to the shores of Moreton Bay was a common occurance on holidays and weekends. Nothing has changed, and on any sunny weekend crowds flock to the Esplanade for a day out with family and friends. That's why the obligatory fish and chip shops appear every few hundred metres along this waterfront drive. One of the best of these is the Pelicans Nest; it's modern and clean, the owners have sexed up the regular fish and chips a little with nice Greek salads etc. and to finish there's good coffee, cake and ice-cream, but without too much fuss or an exorbitant price tag. You still order at the counter and go back to collect, and select your own drinks from the fridge, or byo, so to me it's a happy medium, between the more expensive table service seafood places in Manly and the straight up paper wrapped fish and chips at lots of the other shops. The chilli, lime and garlic calamari with chips and salad for $12 is great. read more

We went to Pelican's nest for a mothers day treat in the bay, through the advise of a friend. We chose one of the family packs and, definitely it was all value for money. The queue was quick moving, but they probably should do something about the buzzers that you collect being at each table there, which meant that there was constant loud beeping happening in among the chatter. It was quite packed at the just after noon time and we could barely get a table until some people left, it seems peek hour is at around noon there in this wintry time of year. They offer takeaway but I'm not sure I would recommend that if you're headed for the promenade, as there was a flock of pigeons and other bird types harassing those on the esplanade wanting to have a quiet fish 'n chips. Maybe they where just hungry that day. Food was decent and customer service forthcoming and professional. Definitely enjoyed our battered fish 'n chips meal, not the best I've had, especially in the chips department, but quite fulfilling. read more

There is an abundance of place to get fish and chips around the Bayside area, particularly in the Manly and Wynnum areas. One of my favourites is Pelican's Nest by the bay. The services is quite fast, even in busy times. The menu has a nice range of chips, fish burgers, drinks, cakes and ice cream. Defiantly worth a try if you are in the area. I came here yesterday with my Dad. We both got a Snack Pack with chips and crumbed cod plus a drink. The fish was delicious and well seasoned. My experience at this venue was overall negative. The prices are outrageous. It was almost $5 for a CAN of coke and service was DISGUSTING. The young girls at the register are SO unprofessional. They were talking the entire time and acted like I was an inconvenience simply for wanting to order. Wish I had have done them and myself a favour and not ordered. The fish is alright, but nothing special and certainly doesn't warrant the high price tag and rude glares from the counter staff. I can understand jacking up the price if you're in a prime location, but it's just mudflaps and a dingy park for a view. Overall, the service is what drags the place down. High prices are acceptable, bad service is not. After my bad experience, I looked online for reviews and found many other reviews on other websites saying the same thing, TERRIBLE SERVICE from the counter staff. I'm glad I'm not the only one. No wonder why the place is almost always dead. Not gourmet, but local best. Chips, or should I say fries, were the best I had in Australia. There's limited dining option around here. Oil they used to fry seems fresh, and the chips were not greasy at all. People were taking a large quantity of fish across to the family park across for feast. Today we, by chance, ended up here for an excellent meal of fish and chips (their flathead special). The kids had a cheese burger and chicken nuggets which also seemed to be quite enjoyable. Adding on the four milkshakes and 1,5 litre of bottled water, we spent some 65$ in the place including the three sauces. All good, but when asking for four plastic cups to drink the purchased water in, I'm asked to pay 5c per cup... This really kills the whole experience for me... It's not the money, but being ask to pay for something minor like this when already spent all that... Sadly, I don't think we'll return... read more

I was there today 3-8-2013 waited over 40 minutes for a take away order of some chips fish hamburger calamari seafood bites, the food was not too bad but the prices are a joke, grilled cod that was smaller than my hand and was gone in 3 bites was just short of $10.00. I will never return because i feel they are a ripoff, i was so annoyed i yelled out as i opened the wrapping and viewed the small sizes that i payed a fortune for. never ever ever will i go there again, and i will inform my friends..total rippoff. read more
