I came here since the Asian cuisine selection is this city is so slim. It definitely fixed my Asian food craving but I would say the food is a little overpriced for the quality. Everything was extra. I requested more veggies in my curry and it was an extra dollar. I wanted brown rice and it was an extra dollar. I ordered milk tea and it came in a very dinky cup. I read beforehand that the service is terrible. With that in mind, I made sure to be polite and energetic so I could accurately assess. The other reviewers are right. This restaurant is a welcome addition to State College Cuisine, especially on the North Atherton side of town. Food is Malaysian focused but has Thai dishes and sushi. Everythign was quite good. I came here for dinner one night. I was not so sure of how the food would be for this place because the outside of the restaurant looked pretty run down. Once I got inside it was nothing like I had expected. The tables and booths were very clean. They had a very nice ambiance to them. The waiters spoke fluent English as well as Chinese. So I was able to communicate with them both ways. The food was tasty and came out fairly quickly. Although we were the last customers for the night they did not rush us out of the restaurant. The reason I gave the place 4 stars out of 5 is because I ordered from here via. takeout after my first great experience. The portions that they give you here when you take out is really small. Please, please, please bring back your sushi bar/menu. There is no sushi restaurant now on the north side of town. For sushi, one has to go to Sakura on South Atherton, which is far for those of us on the northside of town (and is mediocre), downtown to Tadashi (then you have to deal with downtown traffic, parking, students, and limited seating), or drive to Lemont for Kamrai. I found it somewhat challenging being vegan and eating at this place. Initially I came because i read some comments about being vegan friendly. I really wanted something flavorful with noodles, vegetable and sauce. The waiter suggested a tofu plate that once received was very soft, soupy and extra spicy. I was disappointed and asked for a pad Thai instead. Figuring a vegan pad Thai is easy,right? So after waiting for a few minutes the pad Thai full with egg is delivered to my table to my dismay. So hungry, I asked the waiter if he could confirm if didn't have egg. Sure enough it did have egg. I could just hear the chef/owner in the kitchen sighing out loud maybe in Asian language "this lady is crazy!" Now being hesistant to eat the next pad Thai without egg, I ate it carefully. I thought "I really just wanted a tasty pad Thai with noodles and veggies". So I ordered a side of steamed vegetables that were ah Ok. Overall my food experience wasn't great and I give a 3 stars simply because the overworked waiter was accommodating. We sat there awkwardly for fifteen minutes waiting for a waiter to pick up the payment so we could pay and leave. We finally had to get up and ask if we had to pay by the door. There is preferential treatment for Chinese Speakers. A Chinese group came in when we finished ordering and got their food almost immediately while we waited. The food still came relativity quickly. There will be overdramatic music playing in the background so be warned. The restaurant is usually pretty empty. So if you want a more private setting this is your place. This place will be out of business soon. I just moved to town and wanted some "Thai" food so I ordered takeout around 6pm. They said it would take about 20 minutes. I showed up about 30 minutes later to find they hadn't even started cooking the order! It was like they wanted to make sure I would show up and pay. Btw, the place was empty and considering it was 6pm that should have told me something. Anyway, when I walked up to pay, a guy was leaned back in a chair behind the counter sleeping with his coat over him. A little bizarre. A woman took my credit card, processed it and then disappeared to the kitchen. I was thinking she was going to get my food. I should also point out I had my wife and 5 month old son waiting in our running car since I figured the food MUST be ready by now. So, the guy in the chair woke up, stood up and told me I should take a seat as it will be a while. I waited another 15 minutes before she brought out my order. Eh is really the best I can say. I ordered the Spicy Thai Chicken and it was okay, not spicy as the title indicates and I have a low tolerance for spicy. The chicken still had the skin on and the bone-in (and there weren't any knives so we had to request them) which meant the $10 I paid for my meal was mostly for the rice because there was very little chicken. There were 5 people in our party and our food came out at different times with a 20 minute difference between the first and last dish. It wasn't until we asked where our food was that we were told that there were 2 different chefs and the food comes out as they prepare it. It was great to find Penang, as my family has spent many years living areas significantly more culturally diverse than State College. The Sushi was well prepared and tasted fresh and smooth. The Malaysian dishes we have tried so far are fantastic, good soups, great Malaysian spare ribs, and a fantastic coconut pudding served in a young coconut. The interior looks nice, and they have a very large menu. I asked the waitor what he recommended if I wanted something spicy. He said that everything on the menu was very spicy. Perhaps he didn't understand my question. I ordered Spicy Thai Chicken for take out. It was not at all what I expected. The chicken was cold and barely cooked, and the "spicy sauce" was not spicy at all. What you get is a very small chicken that still has skin and bones and a little bit of white rice. Well, the best thing I can say about this place is that the food came out fast and the staff were polite. I asked the waiter for his recommendation of what they do best, and he recommended the Drunken Noodles. Less than 8 minutes later, out came a large plate piled high with noodles and a few slices of beef. It was spicy - that part was ok. But so salty that any distinct flavor was indiscernible and the whole dish was practically inedible. The waiter politely offered to have the dish recooked or bring me something different. I opted for Pad Thai as a substitute, and when it arrived 4 minutes later it was a similarly large plate of noodles with a few slices of beef. This plate had a small sprinkling of bean sprouts and even less green onion. The beef had that fatty, mushy "chinese fast food from the mall" texture to it, and almost no flavor. The noodles were sweet with little indication that this was actually pad thai. I guess this is what you can expect in a small college town where the majority of patrons are undergrad students with limited budgets and limited exposure to decent/authentic ethnic food. Hope there are other alternatives here, because this was nothing more than mall fast food. read more

I came here on a Monday night and the place was partially filled with students. I ordered the classic Malaysian dish of Laksa noodles since I thought this would be their signature dish based on the name of the restaurant. The noodles had a silky texture and pleasant bite to them. Unfortunately, this experience reminded me of feeding time for my cats because of the smell and texture of the fish. Next time, I'll take my own advice and stay away from restaurants advertising too many cuisines on their menu. At least the service was friendly. read more

Good stuff. Im pretty picky with my raw fish. Penang has fresh food with good presentation. The atmosphere is nothing special, just a big room which was a backyard burgers joint at one point. I would recommend this for a quick lunch stop. I recommend the fantastic roll and the tiger roll. read more

If it was possible to give negative stars I would given this place 5 negative stars just for its service (not for food). First of all, I will comment on the food because I don't want to insult the person in the kitchen who is actually doing some good work. I tried different types of dishes here and Seafood Tom Yum Soup, Thai Fish Cake, Roti Canai, Beef Rendang and Fried Fish in Belachan Sauce is some of my favorites at this place ( I am south asian ). Specially the Beef Rendang is the best beef dish I had in State College. If the rating was only for food I probably would have given this place a 4 star. Now if you consider service, this is the worst place in State College. The first few times I thought since I am an international customer they might not be understanding me right. Also, the waiter is also not an native speaker (asian). So, I just thought considered it as a communication problem. But since I went to this place many many times, it became clear to me the service at this place does not have anything to do with communication. They never bothered to put the spoons in right place in the table - food is always late (which I guess is ok most times) and the waiter never comes to check on you or refills water. I have walked to the counter countless times to get water or if I wanted to add something to my order. And the way the waiter talks seems to me like he is doing me a favor by serving. Also, there is a single waiter for the whole place. I traveled all over USA in the last 4 years and ate at many asian places and I never ever experience such bad service in any other place. The worst experience was the time the person in the counter actually walked up to us with the check and told us they are closing the cash register or something (basically means please pay and leave). The 4 of us were not even in that place for long and it was only 9 PM and it closes on 10 PM. I would be ok if they were actually closing - but as we walked outside we saw another group just walked in and sat to order - they were not told to leave because the store was closing. This place should not be allowed to operate with such shitty service in USA. - My advice if you don't care about service you will be probably ok in this place but I will never go back here. read more

Ok - I'm giving it only two stars, but read on to see why. I was here recently with a friend and it was my first experience at Penang. She had raved about it, and I like all types of Asian food so I said, "ok!" We started off with the Spicy Girl Roll and it was REALLY fantastic, then the papaya salad which was also good. It was refreshing, but needed to be stirred up often as all of the dressing had gravitated to the bottom of the dish. It would make more sense to serve that dish on a plate rather than a deep bowl. Then we had the one room temperature chicken dish with sticky rice and the chef's sauce - I forget what it's called. Something Style Chicken, maybe? The rice and sauce were great but the chicken wasn't cut very carefully and I almost cut my lip on a shard of bone (it was labeled on the menu as bone-in, so we knew what we were getting into, but it still seemed dangerous). Over all, I would say the food was good, but I'd go back for the sushi over anything. What put a damper on my first experience at Penang was not the chicken, but the waiter we had. He came over only three times during our visit: once to seat us, the next to bring us water and take our order, and next to bring the food. We waited with empty plates for 15 minutes before I had to motion to him to bring the check. He stood in the back and played on his phone the whole time, didn't come over to ask how everything was, didn't really seem to care. Plus, there were about 3 other tables in the whole place, so it's not like he was busy. As a customer, I did not feel welcome and it took away from the whole experience. Anyway, I might go back someday, but I would rather go to Fuji & Jade for the experience and atmosphere. Your staff needs work. read more

Our host had some perpetual sneer throughout our meal and never came back over -he was also the waiter of sorts. My wife's chicken looked like a sci-fi meal and my General TSo's chicken was devoid of chicken - even chicken broth would have enhanced it. Instead I was left with some either a gummy shell or some shell resembling shellac with nary a piece of anything in it. This was a GREAT place with wonderful food. However, they got a new cook in January 2013, and the food has changed radically. I had been a good client since Penang opened, but the last two take-out orders were a disaster: in late January my wife & I got sick a few hours after we ate our usual dishes (Thai chicken w/ basil, etc.); and on Feb. 1 we decided to give them another chance, but we had to throw away all the food (the soup tasted like rotten vegetables, my chicken was disgusting, etc.). We called and complained, and they simply told us that they had changed cooks... not exactly a satisfactory answer (and no attempt at being nice to excellent & loyal costumers). Worst experience I have ever had at ANY restaurant. My girlfriend and I stopped in on a Saturday night expecting a casual relaxing dinner and were welcomed by obnoxious chinese people freaking out and ranting in Mandarin very loudly right in the main part of the restaurant. They didn't even acknowledge that they had customers in the place. I am actually quite accustomed to poor service at asian restaurants but this was absolutely fucking abysmal. I can't think of a time when I went to a chinese restaurant and didn't see the entire staff rambling loudly and complaining in Mandarin or making fun of customers. The server even apologized to us but they never stopped arguing for fifteen minutes straight. Since we were the only people in the restaurant it was very awkward and uncomfortable, and we actually decided to leave because of it. This marks the first time in my life I have ever walked out of a restaurant due to the staff being so unprofessional and immature. Never go here you will be exceedingly disappointed. read more
