I've always been interested in helping out at a soup kitchen, but never knew where to get started…read more The logical time for a full-time employee and mom of two young children would be to come with a group from church on a Saturday or Sunday to help serve, but I guess I just do not fit that mold. Thankfully, my place of employment offers a day of service/golf day to do some community volunteering. So, I decided to come here on my birthday to focus on people in need rather than on myself. Most of the ladies and gentlemen who work here are already retired, but they sure treat this place like their job. They are serious about what they do and still have fun and humor doing it. I always get a good dose of laughter when working side by side with these selfless women and men. It does good for one's soul. Before you get started however, it is always best to call and also meet Mrs. Martha (I have yet to meet her) to see, if they have a need for someone to help on a particular day. As mentioned, on the weekends it is more so church groups who come and assist and they have more of a need for volunteers during the weekdays. I believe they are open by 8 am. So from 8 - 11:30 am the food for lunch gets prepped. Then at 11:30 am food gets served to anyone who comes through the line until 12:30 pm and then it is clean-up until 1:30 pm, but you can leave at any time that you have to go. You would think that the food tastes mediocre at best, but I was pleasantly surprised by how good it actually does taste. Pretty much a good home-cooked meal. Then there is either a veggie or fruit salad and some decadent desserts for choice. I had to mention that this is Greer's best kept secret for a yummy meal. There's always something going on behind the scenes with clean-up as well. This place is highly organized and it is a joy to serve here. I have been able to come the last Friday of the month for the past three months. I do not think I will be able to make it this month, but I plan on giving the ladies a call (so they won't miss me, lol) to let them know I hope to be there at the end of November again. I will also check with them on their December holiday needs, because I'm not sure if that's when most people's conscience gets to them and they do help out or if they have more of a need then. Anyway, if anyone has a strong urge to get more involved in their community and DO the right thing, please come check out the Greer Soup Kitchen. They can always use food donations as well. You may not get a thank you from the people you serve, but that is not what it is about to me. It is the right thing to DO when someone is in need or suffering. Find me there the last Friday of the month!

(They have quite a bit of merchandise sitting in front of the store.) After checking that out I decided to go inside. There were a lot of men standing and blocking the entrance so I thought there might be another entrance but they moved when I asked if I was coming in the right way. Once inside I was a little disappointed. I don't mind getting dirty. If it's lots of stuff that doesn't bother me... I love to dig through junk to find a treasure! So the tightly packed small store didn't drive me away. However, the first thing that hit me was the store smelled bad. My second discovery was that none of the big items were priced. Quite a few people came and went while I was there. If I was near the other Home with a Heart stores I would stop and check them out. I probably won't visit this one again unless I want to do a DIY project and have the time to have someone price those items I'm interested in buying. Also it would have to be an item that could be sanitized.

The staff is cordial and the volunteers were delightful to work with. The people who were there for meals were quite polite and appreciative. The entire facility is well run and there is an organic garden on site. Composting is carried on there with the excess food products. It's encouraging to find a well run, charitable organization with a mission for recycling and composting for the good of the community and the environment. Project Host Soup Kitchen is supported by donations in kind and monetary gifts as well. I was very impressed and will be volunteering again as soon as my schedule permits.

We found the shelter to be very clean for the animals. The cats were in nice big cages with hammocks for them and they were well fed and watered and there was no smell from the cats as their cages were very clean. The dog kennels were also very clean and so were the animals. We both felt that the reception area could be kept neater, but we found the small staff there very friendly and helpful. I would not hesitate adopting from or relocating to this shelter.
