The drip coffee is just okay, nothing special or worth the price. The beautiful croissants looked tempting, but today was not the day to enjoy these gems. When we arrived the service was chaotic and frantic. They were scrambling to handle the drive through order of 10 breakfast sandwiches, so our drip coffees took forever. Hello - The coffee/espresso, staff, and ambiance seemed fine. This review is primarily about their baked goods. I was told they have a new baker onsite, which means fresh, fantastic! My weakness is croissants, and now indeed they have several choices which I'll go into. Plain croissant: Appeared to be just a Costco croissant for $3, which are indeed a puff-pastry dough factory-made. I buy them for home all the time ($6/doz.) and are a great cheap treat when toasted... but not something I'd pay $3 for each. Almond croissant: Now this is where it gets interesting. It looked like a croissant, and bakery made. It was the traditional shape but heavier than most, and when I took a bite it has a nice almond flavor, it does taste good :-) BUT, it was actually a SCONE made into a croissant shape with almond (frangipane?) filling and nicely topped... maybe even twice-baked (not sure)... just not a croissant. Maybe call it an almond scoissant? I get-it - buttery puff-pastry with the flakey crumbles are hard to make, I've tried. But to make a scone masquerading as a croissant... well that's clever & devious, but (to me) seems to exceed "artistic license", not really honest :-) For just short of $12+ tip I drove away with a med. latte & scone/croissant (whatever you call it)... think that'll be the last time. Well, that is until she/they make real croissants (hint hint), which of course requires the owner to invest/support her with the required space & equipment. Anacortes sadly lacks a French bakery. A small town coffee shop that might be one of only a couple that is a storefront with multiple tables and a parking lot. For that reason, it is pretty nice. The counter and coffee making prep area seems rather tall, cluttered and closed off to customers. I prefer a more open feel to customer-barista interaction, but if it works for Penguin, it works. They have a drive-thru that is pretty popular. The hours are probably the coolest part about this shop: open early and relatively late. Classic coffee and tea beverages, non-dairy milk, nice staff, seating area, parking. Prices can't be beat when compared to prices in, say, Seattle. Good enough for me. read more

I love this little coffee shop! They ALWAYS have delicious fresh pastries. Somehow you can come in here at 7 am or noon and the pastries are typically still warm from the oven! My favorite thing to get here is the peach scone. There are chunks of peach in the peach scone that melt in your mouth and are to die for. Seriously. Best scone ever. Since the pastries are so good, they do run out in the afternoons, so I'd recommend coming in earlier in the day if you're after a specific one! I've had several different coffee drinks here as well. The coffee is always great. They have regular coffee and espresso drinks like lattes and mochas. They also make a great chai tea latte! Penguin coffee has an old school punch card program for drinks as well, which is so awesome for regulars! If you've never been here, I highly recommend giving them a try- more specifically, try that peach scone! read more

Came off the ferry on a cold rainy Sunday and was debating between this coffee place and one of the drive-throughs with good reviews. So glad I chose this one. Very cute penguin-themed decor, reminded of my aunt who loves penguins. Staff were very friendly. The dilettante (dark chocolate) mocha was smooth and rich but not too sweet for the morning. Was planning to nibble on my scone all the way on my drive to Sea-Tac but had pretty much devoured it before I made it to the west branch of the 20. Crunchy bits on the outside and moist inside -- just perfect cranberry orange scone. I will be going back for seconds when I come pick my daughter up from Friday Harbor in June!! read more

Delicious cinnamon rolls and coffee are served up here by a super friendly and welcoming staff. Both really hit the spot and this proved to be the perfect place for our group's last stop in Anacortes after a trail race through Deception Pass State Park. Went in looking for a quiet replacement for the loud Starbucks down the street, and while I found quiet, I'm not sure it was quite worth it. The ladies behind the stand were marginally friendly, until I asked for the WiFi password and had issues getting it to work. They had a very "well, whatever, it's not my problem" attitude towards it. When they were not busy making drinks, they sat around and loudly complained about one of their other coworkers. There seemed to be no outlets near any of the seats, so I was pressed for time with my laptop dying. The tea was overpriced, as it always is, and the water was lukewarm. The music choice they had playing gave me whiplash- one song would be classic rock, the next a folk song, and then the next a bizarre psychedelic piece that made my kidneys hurt. The atmosphere was cold and unfriendly, and the decor was kind of all over the place. Overall, won't try again. read more

Has been a pit stop, even if miles out of the way, for years. Took a 40 mile detour today after calling ahead to make sure they had pastries. Their scones have always been memorable. The gal on the phone failed to mention what the guy told us when we pulled up- their baker is gone, and now they are only carrying pre made, really poorly made baked goods. Really a disappointment. I lived in anacortes for 5 years and drove through every coffee shop in town, I'd get coffee at least 3x a week. I used to love penguin the most and have been probably 100x over my time there. Their white chocolate mocha was so good, and the atmosphere was relaxing. Here is what makes it 1 star for me. THE SERVICE. Three separate times I was so upset I vowed never to go back there again, but I always ended up relenting after a few months. One girl in particular (I won't mention names though I know them all) was SO RUDE on a consistent basis. You'd pull up to the window and she would literally just stare at you. NO smile, NO hello, NO what can I get you. She made me feel very awkward and completely unwelcome. I didn't know her personally, I consider myself a friendly person AND I always tipped, this just is who she is apparently. Honestly why would I want to repeatedly drive through an establishment that made me feel that way when I can get an equally good cup of coffee down the road where they're actually friendly. Management. He is extremely unprofessional. I can go into details of what he did personally, but it's not worth it and I prefer to sum it up simply as he's unprofessional. His actions left me puzzled. The rest of the staff is gossipy at best. The actual coffee is good in case you're wondering. But I don't even feel like that matters. My whole experience is overshadowed by the staff. My overall opinion of this stop is just distaste. Distaste for the way it's run, distaste for the staff personally, and the desire not only to never go there again, but to tell everyone else the same. read more

I stopped in here based on the reviews of good Yelpers. I wasn't thrilled, nor disappointed. The Americano was average. Very little crema and somewhat weak. My Visual Americano Crema and Opacity (VACO) test didn't score too well (when you can see through the coffee to the side of the cup a few mm when looking at the inside). A highly scientifict test of course, but it's disappointing getting a watery-looking coffee, no matter how it was prepared or tastes. I'm come again because the staff is super-friendly, and I'm always up for another try. The hours are decent. Open til 7 on a Saturday, well after the rest of the town has already quietened down. read more

This was by far the best coffee we had during our entire vacation. We were on vacation and needed something to pass the time while we were doing laundry across the street, so we headed up to this cute place for a mid-afternoon kaffeeklatsch. The baristas are really good and were able to make all of our orders, including a *perfect* ristretto for my husband. They're also super friendly and more than willing to make sure that you are happy with your food and drinks. It's primarily a drive-through coffee shop, which seems to be the norm around this part of the country (and thus a novelty to this South Floridian), but they are adequately equipped to handle the casual coffee drinker on foot with ceramic mugs and plates. Sure, it's not a Starbucks interior, but the coffee is well worth the lack of high end design. As with any dining, drinking or drive-through establishment, knowing what you want to order when you get to the point where you actually *can* order is par for the course. Lindsey and her mother-in-law obviously haven't learned this rule yet and thus should stick to the chain coffee places. :D read more

But I ordered a blended coffee and it was okay it was too watery and icy and didn't have that strong of a flavor I have had a lot better. Next time I'm in the area I'll have to try there hot drinks. This is a good find. In a small island town like Anacortes, you have to expect that most businesses will be out to rip you off or charge high prices for products that are low in quality and/or in quantity. This little coffee shop is an exception. You definitely cannot miss it as you drive past, when the big beautiful penguin sign beckons you. The blueberry scone I bought had a great flavor and texture, despite being a leftover from yesterday. It did not make a huge crumbly mess as cheaper scones often do. They had a lot of good-looking coffee but I was more drawn to their wonderful selection of tea for both hot and iced consumption. The blackberry sage tea had an amazing aroma and was quite refreshing. I am, however, very disappointed that their two largest drink sizes are not named King and Emperor, respectively. If you're gonna commit to birds, then fully commit. read more
