Absolutely the best coffee anywhere in Anacortes. We visit 4 to 5 times a year from Oakland, and stop by here every day we're in town. The staff is friendly the coffee is delicious. My mom loves the mocha - she goes every day. I've never been inside, the drive thru is perfect except the drive in window seems more for trucks than low cars. read more

I was born and raised in the area, but had never stopped into this coffee place. I often drive to meet people to discuss business - and my clients suggested this place. The atmosphere was nice, decor is updated and cute inside. We all stayed about an hour discussing business - then parted ways. The place wasn't busy and we weren't plugging up a table from others to use. It was about 5:30 and they weren't closing until 7...I decided to order a mocha shake, highly recommended by my client - and it looked good. My experience was great until the last 5 minutes I was there and actually became a paying customer. There were 2 employees - the male working was windex-ing the pastry case and took my order from me as I looked at him through layers of glass, and he didn't stop cleaning the glass, either. He motioned for the blonde gal to come take care of me, which she did. I ordered all over again with her (and she was even less friendly, did not smile, did not make eye contact, did not ask if I would like anything else). I decided to only tip 50 cents, I wrote it in on my debit card receipt - well, apparently that was another offensive thing I had done because she looked at it, grabbed two quarters out of the register and literally THREW them into the glass tip jar on the countertop, making a lot of noise and showing her feelings very clearly. It took about 5 minutes to get the drink, it was quite delicious I must admit. The staff may have been through a busy day, or perhaps I looked like a city slicker because I was in work clothes - but I am very much a local and was not impressed with the rude service at all. I will not be back...I would even rather endure Starbucks, and that is saying A LOT. I know Anacortes is cute and quaint, and the town chooses to stay that way by keeping as many businesses locally owned and operated as possible. I support that, too! But it does not give them the right to feel entitled and grandfathered in to the community to the point of not paying attention to classy service anymore. It's the one common denominator that has always meant the most in any industry or business. Just my opinion - hopefully I just caught those two on an off-day or maybe something about my appearance was not hipster or relaxed enough. But I was treated rudely and I don't feel it was my imagination, I was having a great time in there. Cute place otherwise! read more

This is a good find. In a small island town like Anacortes, you have to expect that most businesses will be out to rip you off or charge high prices for products that are low in quality and/or in quantity. This little coffee shop is an exception. You definitely cannot miss it as you drive past, when the big beautiful penguin sign beckons you. The blueberry scone I bought had a great flavor and texture, despite being a leftover from yesterday. It did not make a huge crumbly mess as cheaper scones often do. They had a lot of good-looking coffee but I was more drawn to their wonderful selection of tea for both hot and iced consumption. The blackberry sage tea had an amazing aroma and was quite refreshing. I am, however, very disappointed that their two largest drink sizes are not named King and Emperor, respectively. I'll admit- I'm so much of a regular at Penguin that they recognize my car in the drive through. Here's the thing though: I'm picky. I'm picky about coffee, I'll drink the exact same thing every day for months then inexplicably change my mind, I bring my dog on coffee runs, sometimes I want food and sometimes I don't. I'm a nightmare regular. But they still greet me with a smile, Nikki still tells me jokes, and when I've decided on a new flavor of the week they're super accommodating while I get my new drink dialed in just right. Best coffee in town, best baristas in town, and they don't even get angry when you're camped at the window as they open. Perfection. Five stars. read more

First of all it has a great drive through -- THE place to get your coffee before you get on a ferry, for example. But what I really love is sitting inside. It's small and old fashioned, but not precious and cutesy and self conscious. It's the real deal. It's sooooo not $bucks, but the coffee is even better. Fun to see the same locals there, and the laid back but skilled staff. Great medium roast, great dark roast. Free wifi. Like I said, it's just a darn nice place to be. And I like penguins. read more

We visited Anacortes last weekend and during our first morning search for espresso, we found Penguin Coffee. They have a drive-thru window which was very busy, but we opted to go inside. It looks somewhat like a converted fast-food restaurant with an attempt to make it seem cozier - but not quite, as only one person was actually sitting at a table and no one else was in line. The staff took our drink order with hardly a good morning or hello, and handed us our drinks and sent us on our way. Two sips of my way-too-hot soy latte was all I could muster - sadly, this was the most undrinkable espresso beverage I've had in quite some time, as it was incredibly bitter. The syrup my partner had added to his was barely enough to make it tolerable. Don't be fooled by the busy drive-thru - people aren't there for the espresso or the ambiance. read more

Tee shirts and ball caps are for sale; books and board/card games are available if you want to read or in case you want to play against your friend or new acquaintance. Average decor, aging chairs and tables. Generally a good spot to grab a coffee and study (except right now, Monday morning when all the senior citizens come in and chat with seemingly inoperable hearing aids). I'm fussy about few things in life, but I'm very fussy about coffee. Wherever I go, I hunt for an excellent cappuccino. Recently I spent 3 weeks in Anacortes. Having tried several places in town, my favorite cappuccino is the one they serve at Penguin Coffee. There's ample parking and the cafe is easily found. We used to stop at Starbucks when we wanted to get a mocha or breve in Anacortes because we hadn't been able to find any decent local coffee shop in town. But an overflow crowd at Starbucks one morning had us looking elsewhere and thankfully we found Penguin Coffee. We MUCH prefer them now. The prices are lower and the espresso is very good. And they have free Wifi in the shop. The place is always busy with locals so they sure have their audience. Now that we know there is a locally owned business in Anacortes that really knows their coffee we have forgotten about the Starbucks in town and only go to Penguin. read more

We were in Anacortes for a day and went to Penguin Coffee because it was highly rated. We loved this place! The service was incredible and the barrista went above and beyond in making lattes exactly to our liking. She offered and gave me an extra shot of espresso at no charge and then offered to put it in a larger cup and add more steamed milk if it was too strong. It was one of the best lattes I've ever had (and I've had many). I will definitely return to Penguin Coffee whenever I'm in Anacortes. read more

Stopped in after the ferry to grab some coffee and wanted something local. This place hit the spot! Penguin Coffee is adorable. The location offers an inside shop and a drive-through, which is very convenient. I went inside and ordered an espresso shake, a hot cider, and a cup of water and they were made in a jiffy! The bathroom was clean and had cute penguin decor. The women at the counter were kind and conversational. It's the place locals go. Free wi-fi, congenial staff (except for some afternoons), the owner plays in local bands, the bakery goods are made on site fresh every day and the prices are reasonable. This review is LONG overdue. Actually over a year ago.. but I still remember this experience. When my boyfriend and I first moved to Anacortes in February of 2014, we figured we would try this place due to all the good reviews. I wish we would have gone to Starbucks or Strawberry by the Bay instead. We walked in and weren't greeted.. that's usually not a big deal to me when places are busy, but we were the only ones who walked in and the only ones in line and everyone behind the counter was just standing around talking to each other. We walked up to the counter and no one came up to take our order, so we were standing there for a little bit thinking that maybe they were giving us some time to look at the menu. A few minutes went by and usually if people are staring at the menu for a few minutes, baristas ask if we have any questions, if there is something she or he can help with or recommend.. things like that. Nope, we were completely ignored. We waited patiently for someone to take our order, but everyone still stood around gossiping about the latest happenings in their life. We were considering leaving at this point when finally, one of the girls turned around and asked "Do you know what you want yet?" in a COMPLETELY rude and snarky tone like she had been waiting for US this whole time! I may seem like a customer service Nazi, but having held many customer service positions in the past and trained properly with customer service etiquette definitely makes me appreciate good customer service and bad customer service when I get it.. and this definitely was enough to turn me off to this place. I at least know not to ignore people who come through the door to my business. And on top of everything, the coffee wasn't that great in my opinion. I've been driving past Penguin for a number of years now on various trips to Anacortes. Finally my wife and I stopped in, and I'm glad we did. The coffee is very good and so is the service.
