It's been a little over a month I finally started my mission to get my 4Runner re-smogged because it had failed and I got pulled over for no tags and got a fix it ticket so my time is limited I went by one place as I was filling out the paperwork they asked if I could come back tomorrow because my catalytic converter has already been stolen but replaced and it would take longer so long story short they wanted to go home for the day they were closing turned around they were gone before I left there parking lot so before I took off I decided to look for some place else it's about 5pm found a place on Middlefield 2850 2800 they were nice the dad had a appointment so the son had me follow him to this place just up the next block right after the tracks and said he would take care of me and right away he was nice explained to me the process and understood my crazy questions it was super fast and it passed!!! Great experience and highly recommend Peninsula Smog. Carlos is super friendly, fast service, and gives excellent customer service. I called beforehand to check the wait time, and he said it is first come first serve, and there was no wait when I called. Drove up and parked on the street and then Carlos drove my car in and did the smog check while I waited outside on the chairs. Comfortable waiting room; quick service; decent pricing. My car didn't pass because of a catalytic error. The sensor was reset, and I was advised that I needed to drive it 20 mins on the highway, then come back. Sure enough when I returned it passed and I received the smog certificate. read more

*Epic* discount - just mention Yelp Back story: I did some research on Yelp and chose Alan as his shop is near work. I tried finding the coupon on Craigslist but could not. Decided to pay full price as I need to renew tomorrow. Stopped by his place at 2:30pm and was seen immediately. The price listed on the shop wall is 59.75 for cars, cash is 58.00. The test took about fifteen minutes. After we finished the transaction (I gave him three twenties, he gave me two dollars) I mentioned "Saw you listed on Yelp, you have good ratings." He looked up from the test station and said, "Yelp? Oh wait, there's a Yelp discount." He added the discount to the bill, I gave him the two dollars back and he gave me a twenty and ten - than's correct - the Yelp price is 30.00. Cheap and quick smog check. Went today. No appointment. Just drove in. $30 smog check with coupon from craigslist, home skillets. (add $2 if you pay by credit card). It only took about 20 minutes total. The waiting couch is right there in the garage so you can watch Alan in action. I couldn't be happier. I needed to get my car smogged and was told by a co-worker that this place was great. I printed the coupon from craigslist.org (search "Alan Smog" under services). $35.00 dollars and 15 minutes later, I was on my way tackling the rest of my day. Love it! Word to the wise, this place isn't fancy by any means so don't expect a pedicure and manicure when you are sitting in the 2 recliner chairs that make up the "waiting area". Its a "Just get in, get the work done and get out" kinda place. All you need. Again, Love it! Not sure what Min K's problem is (review dated 1/26/09) because everything I have heard, and experienced, about Alan's is great! My womans intuition tells me that "Min" is related to a nearby shop that might not be getting the rave reviews Alan's does. Ghetto station and area, older equipment, yapping dogs left in front of the test area, took FOREVER (read: an HOUR) and he failed me. That's odd since it passed elsewhere a few months ago and all maintenance is up to date.... I still had to pay (and no free re-test) and will have to pay again elsewhere to get it done properly tomorrow. It seemed like he didn't really know what he was doing since he referred to phone book-sized manuals every 5 minutes and seemed to repeat actions over and over again... hence the 1 hour check. He also failed the guy in front of me (w/another newer car that seemed like it should have passed) - and when both of us asked why, he had no idea. I asked if my fluids were low or something - again, he had no idea. WTF? UPDATE: Less than 24 hours later I took the same car to another (more reputable) smog place **without doing anything to the car** and it passed with FLYING COLORS. I had an excellent emissions rating and the guy even commented as such. So I would definitely beware of Alan's smog test station. False readings aren't cool. read more

I needed to get a customary yearly Smog done for my car so a quick search on Yelp threw up Alan Smog who had a coupon on Carigslist for doing the Smog for $30 with certificate (In-fact if you go on a Sunday it would work out to only $26 which is literally the cheapest quote that I've seen for Smog). Anyway as usual I showed-up on a weekday without any appointment. The place was not difficult to find. It's on Middlefield road which has literally 50 auto shops (most of which also provide Smog services) along a 2 mile stretch but its not difficult to zero-in on it (this probably also explains why Alan provides the service so cheap). When I showed up there was one car inside the shop and one waiting outside so I was told that it would take 40 minutes if I choose to wait or I could come back later. I decided to wait it out. It turns out that I was up in 5 minutes as both the cars ahead on me needed to get Smog'ed at a STAR certified Smog station. So keep that in mind, if your DMV renewal notice says use a STAR certified Smog station Alan Smog is not the place for you. Another 10 minutes I was out with a Pass. One last thing that I can say is that Alan uses one of those newer test systems where the car need not be run on rollers, so the test is pretty much just reading off the cars on-board computer and verifying that the parameters that are pulled are within acceptable ranges along with a bunch of visual inspections all of which went through smoothly. Lastly I paid cash so I'm not sure if Alan takes cards so check with him before if that's important for you. Overall one of the cheapest Smog's that I've got done so no problems in using Alan again unless I can find someone willing to do it cheaper :) read more

Cheap & Easy Smog Check Showed the craigslist coupon on my phone, accepted no questions asked. About $30 out the door; a great value. Realize that you are coming here for a cheap smog check; it's not a beauty parlor, a five star restaurant, or a high-end dealership with an espresso bar. The ratings account for this reality -- if you want free coffee, a waiting area, magazines, free wifi, or a complimentary car wash, go somewhere else because these will not be found here. Then again you're getting for $30 what other shops charge $60. Note that this is a new location, basically a sublet bay in a muffler shop that may be easy to miss. It's only one bay, so there could be a wait (I had none). There is no waiting area and not much around, so you may want to bring a book or coffee or snack if you're going to get bored of watching traffic go by or don't have a smartphone to entertain you. read more

Came by this morning for a smog test. There was one car before me so I had to wait about 15 mins. With the craigslist coupon the cost came out to be $35 (for a 2001 car). This place is pretty much the cheapest (or almost cheapest) place around Menlo Park/Redwood City area for a smog check. I've came here for my past two smog tests for my car as well. Just not too fond of the decor of this place, it doesn't look very clean and it smells bad around and about the service area. read more

Competitively priced. The business owner is friendly. The shop is easily-accessible from the from Middlefield Rd. I got there in the morning and there was--thankfully--no wait. There are a couple of downsides, namely: there is not ample space for cars waiting to be tested, the interior of the shop is small and does not have much room for waiting. No bathroom is available, although I believe most smog shops lack this accommodation. There is only one couch, and the shop lacks heating which would be nice in the winter. Otherwise, It is cleaner and located in a "nicer" area (near Costco) than other smog test shops I have seen/visited. The test was completed quickly. Would use this shop regularly. read more

Fast and friendly. He didn't pick up his phone right away, so I tried a couple hours later and he said I could stop in anytime. I dropped my car off at 11:45am and ran over to Hometown Noodle for lunch. When I came back, everything was done and actually there was another customer in his 1 space garage. I actually also forgot my DMV paperwork and he said he didn't need it, and took the VIN from the car. There's no waiting room, or water, or anything really, but he's fast and cheap! This was my second visit to Alan Test Smog Check and the first to this new location. I think the whole smog check thing is kind of a racket, so I always opt for the cheapest test around, as long as it doesn't make me angry with bad customer service. Alan Test fits the bill. I went mid-day on a weekday, and only had to wait 5 minutes for another customer's paperwork to get filed. In and out in probably 10-15 minutes, and the whole experience was perfectly pleasant. There's no fancy waiting room with air conditioning and wi-fi, but if you can't go without those things for 10-15 minutes, well, then go ahead and pay 3x for your smog check somewhere else. read more

The place isn't glamorous, and Alan isn't much for words, but he gets the job done. The wait can get a bit long at times, so stop by early in the morning. This place is awesome. Stepped in here to do a smog test during lunch. No appointment was needed. Alan completed my smog check in 15-20 minutes total. Very efficient and pain free. Cost was $35 total with Craigslist discount. Cars that are 1995 or older are slightly more expensive. The one downside is that it's in Redwood City, and it's pretty ghetto. But seriously who cares. It all ends up being a computerized and getting sent to the DMV electronically anyway. 5 stars. I would highly recommend. read more

I made a call to Alan Test Only - Smog Test Station and was greeted by a, "Hello, Alan here!". Given the good Yelp ratings I decided to bring in my 1996 Chrysler Mini-van for a Smog- Test Only. Alan was quick and was very systematic with the test. He isn't much for words but hey, he did a great job and got me out of there fast. Don't let his shop fool you (Picture one of those garage shops that seems like it's been there forever with the typical "car mechanic" wear and tear).
