I love to find treasures so today when in the area I saw the big red sign and took a chance. The Penn Valley Fire District Thrift Shop parking lot was full I got so excited thinking that this was place to be. 6 feet apart and must have a mask signs were plastered on door. This is expected. As I walked in a volunteer behind the counter said hi and marked on her clipboard that I a customer walked in. As I gave her a strange look she said it was covid policy to limit only so many patrons in the store. I didn't see anyone else in the thrift shop but I heard a crowd. Turned the corner and ran into a company meeting. Approximately 8 ladies stood in a huddle by kitchen items and everyone was talking at once. "The big lady said we must do deposits." "Why can't we just leave money in the safe at Fire Department?" "I knew they were talking about us." In between spreading the word from the "BIG LADY" they were also talking about ones fishing trip was cancelled due to the fire and a big community yard sale. "She has three truckloads of stuff." "My granddaughter is going to help me at my house." "My friends are bringing some of their thing to sell at my house." How exciting. I love thrift stores and yard sales. So I piped up and asked when the yard sale was. It's like I blew an air horn and everyone went silent with looks of horror on their faces. "Oh it's a Lake Wildwood yardsale. But you have to know someone to call you in because it's gated. " It's for our community." One lady said "Each house can only buzz 2 cars through the gate so you need to know a home owner in Lake Wildwoo and have them buz you in. Apparently all the retired women ńwho live in gated community of Lake Wildwood volunteer at Penn Valley Fire Thrift. I chuckled and walked towards the back and the gossip and fussing picked back up from my interruption. I would like to also point out everyone in the group was huddled together not following the 6 feet apart rules that were plastered on the front door. One lady came out back. She was stocking the shelves and said hello, asked what I was looking for and pointed out a few things. Super nice. She clearly doesn't live in Lake Wildwood. After about 30 minutes in store I had 3 items with 1 item marked 1/2 off. The "Lake Wildwood" ladies broke apart and I found myself face to face with the lady behind the counter again. She made a marking on her clipboard and proceeded to check me out. After she rang up the items I noticed that she didn't give me 1/2 off on something. Her response was "This isn't a half off item." I explained that I got them off a 1/2 off table and a quick glance around corner you could see that there is 1/2 off sign. The nice lady that helped me prior must have heard what was being said, came around corner and told the check out clerk that the item was 1/2 off. Clearly because she wasn't a Lake Wildwood resident, the register clerk didn't believe her and walked towards the back to see the 1/2 off sign for herself. I chuckled and she snapped and said "Well I'm not back there and don't know where you for this from." Well that makes it okay. I should have left but I wanted my 1/2 off item. I took out my debt card and was quickly told with frustration that they are cash and check only. Shame on me. Luckily I had cash to pay and take my bargain find's out of there. I couldn't leave fast enough and I should have left immediately after I was verbally and stink eyeballed attacked by the Lake Wildwood gang. I know two things for certain. One is that I will never return to this place. Two is that I will never be buzzed through the fancy Lake Wildwood gate's to partake in their upity community yard sale. You've been warned. read more

I volunteer here and reject the idea that all the workers are from Lake Wildwood. My fellow volunteers come from all over Penn Valley and many have been volunteering for over 20 years. We try to run a clean and tidy building observing all the safety protocols. Prices are reasonable: pants or shirts for $3.00 or less. Jackets for less than $10.00. Because we all volunteers on different days, we sometimes are unaware of a special sale. In the past years we have helped fund a new fire truck and helped repair other equipment needed by the fire station. read more

This sweet little thrift shop has some of the best pricing in the area. The staff is 100% volunteer and many have been showing up one day per week for over three decades. The store is always clean and well organized and I never fail to find some fun little item that I can't live without. read more
