What a great find for fabric in the Sarasota area. I "stumbled" across this store while desperately looking for a fabric store that carries quality dressmaking fabric in Sarasota. Being from the Phila area, with access to NY, I am used to having many choices for fabric stores of all qualities and price points .Pennie Fabric is truly a hidden treasure in the gulf coast area. There is no where, absolutely no where in Sarasota..or even Tampa..that I found which carries quality dressmaking fabric. Aside from the beautiful fabrics, the owner, Mr. Nasir Mahmud, could not be nicer or more helpful. He immediately puts you at ease and is extremely knowledgeable about fabric as well as more than willing to assist you without being "pushy". If you like to sew...be sure to get there and spend some time perusing the lovely fabric at this store. It will be difficult to leave without finding something you absolutely must have. Fabric Heaven!!! Love good fabric, but I don't get to sew as much as I would like. Vacationing in Sarasota and decided to visit this store based on Yelp reviews. Oh my!!! So much high quality dressmaking ( and skirt, and jackets, and pants) fabric. Much of it is ends of runs from known designers according to the knowledgeable owner who worked in wholesale fabrics in NYC. There are silks, brocades, chiffons, silk/linen blends, wools, stretch wool knits, boucles, sparkly, sequins. I need a dress to go with a jacket I own for an occasion that is coming up. The owner very graciously cut samples, recording the stock # and price so I could take them home and look at them with the jacket, then call back to order. The store doesn't stock patterns or supplies (thread, zippers, etc) but fabric of this quality is very difficult to find. Visit soon, tell a friend who sews. read more

I finally got a chance to visit Pennie Fabrics and I am so glad I did. THe owner, Nasir and his assistant, Maudy were so helpful in helping me select the right fabrics for my project. The selections of fabrics - just gorgeous. Then I mentioned I needed my measurements done and Nasir suggested I come back on Saturday and have his instructor Susan help me with that. So I did, and Susan was just wonderful too. She did my measurements and also gave me lots of info. and tips for my project - a Chanel-style jacket. I have to go home to Canada but plan on coming back to Sarasota in November 2024- I will for sure be going to the Saturday classes. I met the Owner, Nasir Mahmud and his associate Jeffrey this morning (March 8th 2018) with a dear friend while shopping for some material to make a dress for an upcoming wedding in July of this year. Mr. Mahmud was more than helpful and made sure that what I purchased was better than my first choice for the outer material of the dress. His associate was charming and helpful as well with packaging the cut material. Mr. Mahmud's choice of lining will help in keeping cool while sitting in the finished product. I was in Sarasota with my husband and had been recommended by a sewing instructor in Naples to check this fabric store out. The owners are the nicest and most knowledgable people you could meet. I was so impressed I drove back this last week for a two day seminar crafted for a friend of mine and myself. It was wonderful and we were served tea and cookies as well as a wonderful lunch by a beautiful creek out back of the store. I came home with more beautiful fabric at great prices. What I would not give for a store like this in Naples. Worth the drive to Sarasota! read more

My experience at Pennie Fabric store was amazing. As I walked in the store I immediately realized the hidden treasure this store is. Having lived for 18 years in Italy, has trained me well when it comes to designer and high quality fabrics. The prices at Pennie Fabrics are about 70% - 80% less from the market in Italy. The quality does not only reflect on the fabrics, customer service reminded me of the one on one service that I so much love, and which characterizes European small dimension stores. While quality apparel fabrics are nearly impossible to find, Pennie's is loaded with them(!): fine Italian shirtings to English wools, beaded/embroidered, naturals, synthetics, metallics, funky/edgy & designer goodies. Process are VERY reasonable for what they are. This is my "best of the best" fabric stop as I ferret about the nation feeding my artsy habit. Definitely destination-worthy if you're into making clothes (no quilting, no upholstery). Don't miss the rear hallway and two room...its OK to go back there. Nasir, the store owner, was genuinely friendly and caring. He has a real passion for his fabrics and it shows. My mom and I stopped in after seeing his other glowing reviews and we are so glad we did! The quality of his fabric is unlike anything you would see at a Joann, Hancock, hobby lobby etc. He sells high quality European fabrics at prices that can't be beat. This store is a real Florida gem. The best place to shop for any kinds of fabrics, no matter what you're sewing! Personally, I was looking for fabrics for a clothing collection and could not be happier that I gave it try and drove there. The owners are extremely nice and helpful, and can give a great advice on which fabric to choose. They keep up with fashion trends and have designer fabrics from Europe. A friend and I dropped by today with our simplicity pattern. We were in search of a soft, quality jersey. Nasir walked us through his vast selections and revealed some wonderful options. We spent over an hour, draping, analyzing and pairing our choices. He carried not only jerseys but also fusible stay tapes, fusible interfacing on the bolt, and silk jersey linings. We both walked out with enough fabric to make 3 tops each and our purchase totals were under $45!!! Now that's what I call a high fashion bargain! read more

As good as it gets.....Fantastic variety of high quality fabrics in this gem of a store! For a reasonable price you find pure class! It was like I stepped into a fabric store in Italy. The owners offer exceptional service- it was raining and I arrived in the store with shoes that were soaked through, the owners wife offered me a pair of sandals to wear while I shopped.
