Nestled on the first floor of a house, Jewell welcomes you into her business and each time it feels like you are in a friend's home. There are five rooms you can browse through. Each room is decorated with eclectic novelties which you can also purchase. The first room houses women's shoes, jewelry, and a sale rack. Outfits are tastefully displayed, but do not stay up long as the items become favorites of customers. A second room contains shirts, blouses, sweaters, scarves, and a surplus of boots perfect for the fall season. Another room is exquisite! It's like being in an expensive boutique where beautiful dresses, gowns, shoes, and accessories are sold for a fraction of the price you would pay otherwise. The last clothing room has racks of pants, tops, jackets, and coats available in all sizes. Treats are awaiting to be eaten in the last room which is the kitchen. What a perfect venue for displaying household goods & holiday items. I've been a customer of Fabulous Fashions since Jewell opened her first store. Thank goodness she moved closer to me! I rarely leave the store without buying an item or two or three. I've found myself running back to the store on the same day to purchase an item I passed up the first time, not wanting anyone else to buy it. Well, she got the chance, and dragged me through the shelves, stacks and racks one morning. I will say this: you really need to know what you're looking at, and it's general worth. There are a few gems hidden among the dross, so it's important to be able to tell them apart. WF found a couple of candlesticks, that looked the same to me, and each priced at $3. She looked at both, picked up one, and explained that one was pewter and probably worth $50-$100, and the other one was cast aluminum, and not even worth $3. It seemed that these difference were all over the store; similar things priced the same, with one being a bargain, and the other being a waste. One thing that I didn't appreciate was one of the old ladies shadowing us while we made our way through the shelves; she was always within a few feet of us. Maybe she wanted to be close by in case we had questions, but it made me feel like a criminal she wanted to catch in the act. When we finished exploring this room, we headed over the other one, which was primarily clothing and textiles. WF was looking for curtains that she could repurpose for another project. This room was bright and cheery, as opposed to the other one, with windows covered and few lights. The clerk in this area barely noticed us when we walked in and didn't leave her seat behind the desk the entire time we were there - she didn't even respond when we said "Good morning!". We didn't last long in here, since there was nothing WF saw that met her needs. If I had more room, and a better grasp of antiques, I may come here more often, if for nothing else than to find those hidden bargains and resell them on eBay. Right now, with limited storage and a hatred of dusting, I'm just going to limit myself to browsing.

Thrift adventure on a large scale! This is a pair of large shops on their own campus off the main…read moreroad. One shop is all clothing, nicely organized in an airy, bright space with dressing rooms. I'm a weird size, so I didn't linger, but in general, selection looked "nice," more consignment-store style than down-and-dirty thrifting. The other shop is simply made of awesome. The main area is a pleasant selection of furniture, linens, and "better" decor. Then there's The Little Shop off through a doorway, which is crammed with so many bargains, experienced thrifters will whimper. This section has all sorts of things (toys, decor, china, useful household stuff). These are paid for separately from the main store, and you find out the price by asking. Prices turn out to be low. It's much more compact back here, so don't bring a huge handbag and do pick up a shopping basket if you start seeing temptations.

Here you'll find lots of Lily Pulitzer, Anthropology, Gretchen Scott and a plethora of other unusual brands for all ages. All I want to know is, where and how do people find this wonderful stuff? The proprietors are friendly, and live and blog locally. While hanging out in the front room and eyeballing their wonderful selection of woven and shell bracelets, a customer arrived who had taught in my district, and we had loads of fun discussing the characters we knew in common. In June I went back to consign more items. When I presented my number the woman told me there had been a mixup with my number/paperwork. She re-assigned my number, had me complete the information again, and then asked me what I had dropped off. A month and a half earlier. Now Yelpers, I am a single Mom with a professional job and an hour commute. I don't remember what I had for lunch yesterday, never mind a month-and-a-half ago. Then she asked me to go through the store and find the items I had consigned! Ain't nobody got time for that! So I left. Today I called to see if the situation had been fixed at all, and I was told that there were a few items sold under the previous number... but the lady who was manning the store wasn't PERMITTED TO HAND OUT MONEY. So, let me get this straight... you have someone watching your store, but you don't trust them with cash? I smell something fishy here. If they can rectify this situation, I'll remove this review.

This is by far the best first I've done. Barb and Phyllis, the ladies who run Barb's Corner, are…read morewonderful individuals and very hard workers. Their store may be tucked away, nestled between Main Street and the train tracks, but it really is a friendly hub. I met Phyllis at the Valley Marketplace on the green in downtown Ansonia. My mom struck up a conversation with her and told her that we were having a hard time trying to consign our old clothes and she warmly welcomed us to come on over any time and she'll take any clothes as long as they're not too beaten up or stained. When I finally went there with bins and bags of clothes, they were so kind and took all but 3 items, which is a breath of fresh air after dealing with the uppity atmosphere at One More Tyme and Plato's Closet. Granted, not a lot of people who visit buy things, so don't get too butthurt if you go in after a couple of weeks and only have 25 cents in your account. This leads me to the absolute BEST thing about Barb's Corner: their huge hearts. Barb and Phyllis take more than just clothing, they also take household items, furniture, and even unopen packs of diapers and adult disposable underwear. If you're someone who's hurting and hard up for money, they might even cut you a break on the price, which is totally unheard of in this dog eat dog world where everyone just wants to make a buck. However, please don't abuse their kindness since they need every dollar they get, as do the consigners. Even if you've got a heart of stone, it's hard not to like this quaint shop and their great prices. I got a brand new pair of shorts with the KMart tag and everything still on them, here for $2.50! All in all, this place is wonderful to visit, even if you are just feeling lonely and need someone to talk to. The only downside, and it's not that big of a deal, is that it tends to get a bit cramped what with all of the stuff they take. So, just keep on your toes and you should be golden.
