I didn't know you get good food for such a great value anymore. I tried some of all our party of 6 ordered and it was all great. I recommend waffle fries as a must have side. The generously sized milk shake was what I think the American milkshake should taste like. Loved the classic diner layout and decorations. Everything we had was much higher quality compared to most of the places in NW Tennessee and the prices were better also. Our party had a hamburger, philly cheese steak, waffle fries, gyro, and a chocolate peanut butter malt. You order at the counter and pay when you order. Be sure to ask for the items you want on the sandwiches, wraps, subs, etc. I didn't catch on to this until halfway through ordering so asked for a couple things after they delivered the food to the table. They were very very good at taking care of us. The next time I will ask if they can toast the sub bread like they did the hamburger bun. The shaved steak on it was very tender and well flavored. And, that was the best chocolate peanut butter malt I've had in a long time. The bread/bun/pita all tasted like something you would want to eat, not the junk bread items you get at a lot of places. The place was very clean overall and the bathroom was very clean. Their health department score shows they work hard to be sanitary. Family friendly place, plenty of parking, drive thru. And, for the person who said they wished they had seen the prices on the menu above the counter...there are handheld menus available with prices. Tldr: A pleasant stop with an appealing aesthetic. I would go again, even to just get a malt or milkshake. Maybe preferably just for a milkshake. This is a cool, vintage aesthetic dinner with tasty spun-to-order milkshakes. Really, the milkshake made my meal. I got an Original Italian. I was afraid that my sub was going to not fill me, and by itself it didn't. The milkshake put me where I wanted to be. A few things could have improved my experience. 1) The girl that took my order was pretty grouchy. She was young and it didn't ruin the visit, but she looked like she could use a cheering up. 2) I wish the board menu had prices. I pretty well ordered what I wanted and paid the pipper. 3) I would have loved like half a handful of chips or a pickle spear with my sandwich. I revisited Penny Hill. I ordered the Chicago dog... closest I've found to a real Chicago dog. I had to order a chocolate malted shake...It came in a cute little soda fountain milk shake glass with whipped cream and a cherry...they brought out almost as much in the metal tin that it was made in...really creamy...great lunch. Stopped in here yesterday before Discovery Park. The little guy and I had a reuben that was excellent. The rest of the family was just as happy including the picky kid with his turkey & cheese. Went into here to grab a bite. Usually, I'm not a big fan of small diner-like places, but this place was great! It looks like it's from the 50's, but it doesn't look weird or tacky. Only problem is that the service isn't exactly super fast, and the meals are really small. I'm not from the area, I'm attending UT Martin and happened to be in Union City today, seeking out a local BBQ joint that happened to be closed on Mondays, driving down the road, Penny Hill, a decently accommodating looking diner was in front of me. Upon entering you are met with retro diner decor and friendly staff. I ordered the Monte Cristo and am extremely impressed. The only local sandwich place I know is Sammies and they are extremely good, but Penny Hill is quite the slightly hidden treat! Definitely coming back when I am able! read more
