This place is magical. You simply don't find thrift shops like this anymore. I grew up here in Crescent city, and I love this place and the owner, Sylvia, so much, that every single time I come back to town, I make it a point to stop in and spend several hours just cruising through the merchandise and reading the plethora of books she has on tap. In fact, typically end up with such a large stack of books to purchase, that she just keeps them at the front desk for me until I'm done with my pile. One other special thing that she does, is keep a record of her regulars and authors they are looking for. If she comes across any of those authors, she will personally give you a call to let you know there in the shop. Sylvia is just a neat woman herself. The damage with most Thrips shops these days is that all of a sudden, they are overpriced. Sylvia is always so fair, and her merchandise is in such good condition for how old it maybe. Found some amazing finds on a recent visit to Crescent City. There are tons of books of all genres. I bought two books, looking for something new, and they were great reads. Yay! Sylvia's has reopened. I've bought rare Lenox china serving pieces at very fair prices. Also, everyday cups, glasses, and stemware. Plus, used books and a finely crafted cookie jar in the shape of a teddy bear. And, really well-made "captain's chairs" at a goodprice. To me, the store is organized into "islands" where like things are organized. For example, the Lenox pieces I mentioned are displayed on a large round table with other serving pieces. The Christmas things are likewise all together. In addition to all the things I've bought, you will find beautiful dolls, sheet music, HotWheels, antique mantel clocks, art prints, art books. paperbacks, vinyl records, DVDs, and furniture. Came to crescent city with my friend and i had the luxury to site see while she visited her boyfriend... happened to be passing by Sylvia's Attic after visiting the lighthouse. The place was filled with treasures. I am a tea cup fanatic. I love them and i was searching for them the moment i striped in to the store. The prices were very reasonable and i was so excited to be there. The workers were very helpful and kind. I walked out with a few things and i was very happy i also got an old book and I'm loving it. Stopped in today with a friend and we left with some great stuff! The shop is big with multiple rooms, tons of books, records, toys, furniture, paintings and knickknacks. This place is HUGE. There are tons of different rooms and each one has a theme. The lady that works there is so friendly and very helpful. She was great to talk to and I got some awesome items to bring back home! I would say take some time and really look through stuff. If I didn't have to fly back with all my stuff I would have gotten more. read more

Found Sylvia's Attic today and went for a bit of a snoop. The prices are exceptionally overblown. Its a fun shop on first glance, but the items are not one whit different or more special than the average thrift/tat shop. Nothing I haven't seen at the average garage sale. Ceramic juice pitcher of no particular vintage that I can purchase in my local kitchen shop was marked $85. Large ceramic crock that was glued back together- $150. Ridiculous. Now, the bit that got me to come here and write, is that my son is in sound design. He found a simple skewer for the bbq amongst kitchen service ware odds and ends. The spoons and forks are a quarter each. This skewer was in with those. It was the only one- not a part of a matched set. What on earth can anyone do with a single mismatched skewer? So my son asked how much it would be. The owner hmmmm'd and thought, and said it should probably be about a dollar. He pointed out that it had been in the silverware, which was a quarter a piece, and asked if she'd accept .50 cents- double what it was in with. He asked nicely- and he only had 50 cents because anticipating that's what the silverware was marked, he only picked up two quarters out of the car. She was querulous and whiney, actually, and said it really wasn't the same thing as a spoon or a fork. So he said since he only had the .50 on him, and it didn't match anything, he just wanted to record a 'ting' sound it made, and she could still sell it to someone else. She snapped out a "NO" as fast and cranky as it was possible to say it. I immediately dropped the overpriced book I was mulling purchasing, and we both walked out. And because of her incredibly cranky and suspicious manner, I'm here to tell you about the place. I don't care if it was $5 while the silverware was .25. I simply expected courtesy, when she was approached with courtesy. We went to a charity thrift up the road, and found a matched set of 4 skewers, for a quarter the whole bundle.
