So valentine Nebraska is a small town at the junction of to highways. We asked for recommendations and this place was one of the two. It was right next to our hotel, which made it even more convenient. It was very busy, but we got a table after a few minutes. The food was great. My son at the chicken fried chicken. My wife, daughter and I had burgers. They were very tasty. The service was great. Our waitress was very prompt and attentive. The food came out only about 8 to 10 minutes after we ordered it. Finally, the bill. It was only about 62 dollars. We were very pleased with the overall experience. Would recommend. read more

Looking back at the menu I'm not really sure why I ended up with what I did... probably just because Bill ordered it, our waitress said it won some kind of 'best burger in Nebraska' contest, and I got excited. I honestly didn't even read the description. What I ended up getting was the Joseph Angus Burger, a 10-oz burger with jalapeno bacon, cob-smoked ham, bbq sauce, house ranch, Swiss and cheddar cheeses, topped with two large, homemade onion rings. I feel like this burger should have come with a warning... something like, "recommended to be split" or "get ready to feel uncomfortable". Bill and I both got one - with fries on the side no less - and neither of us ended up finishing it. On an unplanned road trip with no where to go and nothing to do in search of places we never heard of in towns we didn't know existed. Valentine, Nebraska seems right up our alley. After miles and miles of crop fields, Valentine seemed to be our best bet a decent meal without having to drive for another 2-3 hours. Checked out the Yelp app and the Peppermill popped right up. First thing I notice is that the parking lot is full so that usually a good sign. But, it don't look like there's much to choose from in town so looks could be deceiving. Not this time. Kind of an unusual layout on the inside and a little dated but I don't hold that against an establishment. A lot of the time, dated means comfort and familiarity. Got a lot of looks from the locals as I was walking in. Could've been because I wasn't a local; could've been because I was wearing a Carolina Tar Heel t-shirt in Cornhusker country. Who knows. Anyway, I got my Bud and the wife got her Diet Coke and we ordered garlic bread. The bread was a little on the hard side and not that good. Only ate one piece. For the entrees, the wife got the burnt ends with brown gravy and rice, mashed potatoes (a little redundant) and a salad. I had the country fried steak. Can't get a decent one in California so I was sure I'd get one in the mid-west. The wife's burnt ends tasted like the stewed beef and rice I grew up with and was delicious. Reminded me of home. That's why it's called comfort food. My country fried steak was ok but the gravy was a little bland. Still, it satisfied. My only complaint would be the service. Not really coming down on the young lady waiting on us, she was assigned a large group in the back so we were kinda left by the wayside. I wanted another beer but she never came back until I was finished with my meal. The wife didn't receive a refill until she was almost done too. It would have been alright if another waitress had noticed that our drinks were empty. Lastly, finally had to flag someone down for our check after waiting for 15 minutes after we were done. Heard a lady telling someone else that they were shorthanded this night but unfortunately, I always seem to be caught in situations like this. Oh well, can't imagine another scenario where I'd ever be in Valentine, Nebraska but I wouldn't be opposed to dining here again if I were. read more

We were quite pleased with our carryout food from Peppermill. We were only stopping in Valentine for the evening while passing through. Ordered the prime rib, which was tender and juicy and quite good. As was the prime rib sandwich. Onion rings were only so-so. The "loaded" baked potato did not come w sour cream, which was strange. Asked if they had a horseradish sauce for steak and was told no, but the onion rings were served with a zesty horseradish dipping sauce that was delicious. We were also able to get beer and cocktails to go which was great. When I asked the hostess taking the order for a recommendation of a Heineken like beer that we wouldn't need a bottle opener to open, she wasn't very helpful. Went with Stella Artois. Which required an opener. They can't open it for you. So we had to get somewhat creative back in the hotel room. read more

If you are expecting a fancy place like you would find in the city, this is not it. But, if you are looking for a great local place that emphasizes food not frills, then the Peppermill is the place to visit in Valentine! I had the hot beef sandwich and it was outstanding.... Plenty of beef, real potatoes, and tasty gravy. My husband had the beef tips and was similarly impressed. The meals came with a salad that was crisp and fresh with what appeared to be house made dressings. The salad was the right size but the plate it came on was too small and half my salad fell on the table as I was trying to eat it. Our waiter was nice enough just not all that friendly and kind of brusk. When our plates were clean, he asked if we were finished- we said yes and he immediately brought our check..... no up-sell for desert. On one hand that is nice but I felt like I was being rushed off .... This was at 5:30 on a Monday evening.... They seemed to have a nice selection of local beers on tap but there was no description of them on the menu (maybe a tad heavy on the IPAs). Since I am not from the area I had to ask about each one. I am sure the waitstaff gets tired of providing this information to every tourist.... Our waiter seemed to be. The menu didn't list the "domestic" beers offered; instead, gave a cute but unhelpful rant about foreign ownership of domestic beer companies. Our server was Jill & she did a great job. Friendly and professional. For a steak house I would expect a better wine selection. It was very limited and on the low end of the spectrum . I was a little scared to order steak as they joke on the menu about people who like there's medium or better, so I ordered the chicken fried steak. Not a fan, the breading (thin) was as thick as the steak. Couldn't tell one from the other. The mashed potatoes were real, which is great , although served at room temperature. Stopped in Valentine on a day when the temps exceeded 105 degrees, hot and tired and ready for a beer (which I ordered immediately). I ordered the sirloin with mushrooms. The Peppermill knows how to broil a steak--perfectly cooked, hot, juicy, and tender. Service was terrific. I sat in the bar where the action was that evening. Great Smokey flavor in a delicious bbq glaze. Sandwich was huge and came with some great au jus. The Best Ever Every dining experience here at the Peppermill has been remarkable. Such friendly staff that make you feel welcomed and the food is delicious. The prices are very fitting considering you get a great amount of tasty food leaving you satisfyingly full. I crave this place every time I leave town, you can't find anything comparable. I was looking forward to a late breakfast/early lunch as I came through town. I was turned away by the wait staff after entering the restaurant because the hours on here are currently incorrect and they said they were closed. The hours are also not posted anywhere on the front of the building that I could see. I don't know if they close for an hour or so in between breakfast and lunch or if they just don't serve breakfast on Wednesday. If you show up on Wednesday it sounds like they dont open till 11am. I guess I'll try again on my way back through in a few months. *** I sent a message through yelp asking them to please take a look and update their hours. The owner, Robert, sent me an email back detailing the issues they've had with the hours on YELP and aplogized to the inconvenience. They are not open for breakfast but do open at 11a.m. for lunch. Three stars was for a non-dining time snafu but I am bumping it to four given the customer service and quick response. I look forward to eating here on my way back through and updating this with an actual review of the food and service! read more

The local tap beer from Bolo was absolutely phenomenal. This place made our whole trip and I highly recommend checking it out. Very nice restaurant. Our server was very attentive and did a great job. The food was good- besides burning the burger- which my server gladly took back, my husband enjoyed the BBQ chicken salad, and my son the shrimp salad - we also ordered the special appetizer- beef slices (tips like) and onion rings- the beef had an excellent taste, but there was some burnt pieces, unfortunately. I wanted to order the steak, but I did not want to be judged for not wanting medium rare, blood in the plate steak- (the menu had comments about- ordering meat that was not medium rare, which made you feel like, hmm, if I order medium or medium well- one it would be charred or two maybe they might spit in it?- just thinking of the worse scenarios) I do not eat the blood of the animal- it's against my beliefs- Anyways, maybe they should take those comments out of the menu- and then perhaps more people, that are visiting Valentine would order steak, more readily. I come to Valentine for work about every three weeks or so, and the Peppermill is always on my list of things to do. I like to kick back with a beer in the bar, watch some sports and eat some food. Even though I enjoy their steaks immensely, the chicken friend steak is my favorite! Their salad dressings are wonderful, so I always look forward to that. My only complaint about the salad is there are way too many croutons and I am trying to avoid gluten...which is hard to do when you already have consumed a whole loaf of garlic bread.
