Also wants tenants to tell the office more than 60 days they are moving out by the end of the lease without receiving any reminder/notification to make that decision - near a homeless shelter (did not cause me any issues) but guys will occasionally cat call

I was so excited about my first…read moreapartment and living in close proximity to downtown that I didn't see the glaring problems with St. Clair Lofts. Keep in mind that this is a renovated factory, so it's a very old building. Let's start with the good. The good: 1. Like I stated before, St. Clair Lofts is close to everything like The Oregon District, Brown Street, The Victoria Theatre and Schuster Center, the library, and Riverscape just to name a few. There are plenty of bars, restaurants, and clubs within walking distance. This is a good place for young people to live. 2. There is a gym in the building, as well as a party room and a back patio. Water and trash is included. 3. The apartments are spacious and a washer, dryer, dishwasher, and microwave are all included. The bad: 1. The rent is sky-high. Our rent was $930 for a two bedroom, two bath which is good considering the location, but exorbitant compared to prices in the surrounding Dayton area. Let it be known, you're paying for location, not luxury. Our DP&L was $600 for one month, mainly because the insulation is non-existent. Our front door in particular was slightly askew which was just enough for there to be a constant draft. The floor to ceiling windows made the entire apartment feel like it was 40 degrees at all times of the year, so while it was somewhat welcome in the summer, we were constantly freezing in the winter. No matter how high you turn the heat, it just goes right out the window. Space heaters were a must. 2. Speaking of windows; every time it rained, it would leak and pool in our living room. You can't really do much about it but move everything away from the windows. This is an old building. And it wasn't limited to our apartment. The windows in the hallway would do the same, leaving the apartment with a musty, mildewy smell almost all the time. The hallways are carpeted and carpet that is constantly wet is not pleasant. When we moved in the carpet was stained and gross. They replaced the carpet at the beginning of the year so it is better, but the windows haven't changed so I'm sure the carpet won't last long. 3. We had nothing but problems in our specific unit. When we first moved in, one of the toilets had a broken chain and wouldn't flush properly. Maintenance fixed it. Fast forward nine months and the same toilet overflowed EVERY TIME YOU FLUSHED IT. There could be nothing in the toilet and it would overflow if you flushed it. We snaked it, put drain cleaner, called maintenance up no less than four times and nothing changed. We gave up eventually because we were so close to our lease being up. The flooring was "brand new" at the time of move in and by the time of move out it was peeling and coming up. The oven didn't work when we moved in. Our food could be in the oven for over an hour and it would still be raw. Maintenance fixed it. All of our power in the front half (the kitchen) went out including our refrigerator a few months after moving in. When that went out we lost $100s of dollars of food. Maintenance fixed it. A month before we moved out, the refrigerator went out AGAIN, and AGAIN $100s of dollars of food was lost. Maintenance "fixed it" but it still wouldn't work. Then they replaced the whole refrigerator. We left it empty until we moved. The dryer would catch clothes and burn them. Maintenance "fixed it" but our clothes would still catch in the dryer and burn. I don't even know how that happened. 4. Other little things included that the unit has NO closets except for one shoebox sized one in each bedroom. Good luck with storage. There are no overhead lights except in the hallways, kitchen, and bathroom. You will need lamps for any sort of lighting. When the reviews say the walls are paper thin, believe them. THE WALLS ARE PAPER THIN. True story: our neighbor sneezed so loud, we said bless you and they said thank you back. When they walk in their apartment it feels like they're in ours. Another small thing is that all of the outlets in the apartment are flipped. It seems like a small thing until something needs to be upright, like a Febreeze plug in. More of a nuisance than anything. 5. It's downtown. Parking isn't free. You either pay for the lot across the street that's owned by the building for $50 or the lot in the back that's owned by a private company for $35. Or you park on the street and pay the meter. 6. When we moved in the lady went over the lease with us and basically bullet pointed it. Later, we got nasty letters saying we violated the lease because we weren't aware of the live Christmas tree policy. Read everything. If that wasn't enough, they raised the rent, which cemented the decision that we were not going to renew our lease. The bottom line is I would probably live downtown again, but I definitely wouldn't live here again.

You're right in the middle of the city, close to the river, restaurants, and the energy of downtown, but the building itself has so much character. I posted a photo of the Jefferson loft, and the historic doorway is one of those details that really stands out. It's adorable, full of charm, and not something you see in a typical apartment. The fact that this building ties back to the old YMCA makes it even more special. Where else can you live and truly feel like you're part of Dayton's history every single day? If you like historic architecture, unique apartment layouts, and being in a walkable downtown Dayton location, this place is definitely worth checking out.

On your tour ask to go to the 2nd floor... when you get off the elevator turn left, and left again... at the end of the hallway will be the hallway thermostat... I guarantee you it will be near 78-82 degrees! Now look at what it's set to... probably 72? 74? That will be your apartment... your AC will never be able to cool it... even running all day all night Pls check the above for yourself... take a tour during the summer and I dare u to stand in that garage for a minute and not start sweating... check the 2nd floor hallway thermostat...

I had to have an emergency court hearing to obtain my things because she wouldn't let me in to get my things on my move out date. After the judge ordered them to give me a access to my apartment, she lied to the judge saying nothing was touched in my apartment. Well that was a complete lie. You could tell she tried to hurry up and throw my shoes back in there because they were brand new out the box scattered. My bathroom decor was stolen, giant pack of tissue, trash bags that I had just purchased to pack my belongings with were also stolen. Not to mention food items out of the refrigerator, Toaster Strudels, Magnum ice cream bars, a case of water. Oh and all of the cereal I had in the pantry were stolen as well. Hmmm makes me wonder how many other people she's stolen things from. I even went to her office to return her the key fob and question her about my missing items, she was nowhere to be found. What a coincidence. I do NOT recommend anyone to move here.

And there is a trash room on every floor. In addition to that there's a whole pet area. In the pet area, there's a section for you to wash you dogs, another room for them to use the bathroom, and another room for them to run around and play with other dogs. Useful during the cold or rainy months. The apartments/condos here are very nice!! There are beautiful floor to ceiling windows in almost every room. It's super bright and the views are beautiful! Annette who works at First Place Condos is very nice and friendly. She knows ALL the tenants by name. It is a great place to look at when finding a place to live in Dayton. Just be careful what street you're turning on. With all the construction that is currently going on in Downtown Dayton, a lot of streets are closed or one way. And some entrances to the highways are closed.

In fact, all those interior photos are of my old apartment. Everything was great at first, until I began to smell cigarette smoke inside and around my apartment. Little did I know that First Place is one of the few smoker-friendly buildings left. As someone with asthma, this became a nightmare. I had to purchase 3 air purifiers to remove the smell of smoke in the unit for fear of it getting on me and my clothes. Things got much worse several months later when I brought home an 8-week old puppy. First Place stated they were pet-friendly, but this is not the case. Within a few days, I began receiving noise complaints from Management (via neighbors) regarding my newborn puppy barking. Remember, this is an 8-week-old puppy, and these neighbors chose to live in a pet-friendly building, on a pet-friendly floor--without they themselves having pets. After several back-and-forths with management, I forcefully and successfully sought legal action to terminate my lease but paid a penalty. Bottom line, there are much, much better apartments and condos in downtown Dayton where pets can be pets, and where you can breathe clean air.

Beware of renting with this company. They do not care about their residents and are completely…read moreunresponsive to problems with the property. They threatened to take me to court stating I clogged my toilet so that the apartment flooded, but that's not what happened at all. The hose for the intake water broke and I have the broken part and a video of their maintenance man fixing the broken parts. I attempted to get them to fix the issues that cropped up when they did a poor job with an extraction of the water. They didn't move any of the furniture to do the extraction so that I ended up with black mold everywhere and I had to move out to an extended stay hotel until I could get into a new apartment. I ended up with breathing problems and a horrible rash on my body from the mold infestation. I could go on with the horrors, but I was told to keep this short so you would read the whole thing. Please do yourself a favor and avoid renting with Towne Properties.
