Then the trip to Sylvan Heights Bird Park in Scotland Neck, N.C., was the icing on the cake. This reserve, set up mainly to educate the public and protect endangered species, is a perfect place for practicing photography among thousands of beautiful birds, in settings that feel like natural ones. That instructor seemed more interested in showing his own photos than teaching us about our cameras. I loved that she supplied handouts, and a fantastic little cheat sheet. There was a ton of information, and a lot of aha moments. I now know what ALL my buttons on my Canon are for! You will not be disappointed, and I'm looking forward to my next workshop with Mary Louise.

Brian answered our questions thoroughly and patiently, smiling every second. He was so approachable and easy to talk to. He was also incredibly funny, which took the awkwardness away when it came time for taking the engagement photos. He has an open door policy, and always made himself available to respond to emails, phone calls, and in person visits. We didn't have to lay out a detailed list of the shots we wanted - he just understands what you need and does it. He anticipates what you want. Our photos weren't those cheesy staged pictures that you often see. They were candid shots of us having the time of our lives. They were amazing! The lighting was incredible as well. Most of our reception was in really dark light, but the photos turned out so crisp and clear. Even with the glow sticks that we pulled out later in the evening. He is truly talented! We received our photos just four short weeks after the wedding. In the meantime, he sent us "sneak peaks" to get us excited about what was to come. I'd highly recommend Brian. Our instructor would leave our classroom after just a couple of minutes with no real direction or instruction. He was busy hanging out with a fellow instructor in one of the other domes. Meanwhile we were doing a drawing class in a poorly lit room where the only light was up by where the instructor would typically teach. He did this for weeks. When our ENTIRE class went to talk to Deborah, and let her know of these problems and a lack of instructor, she told us ALL that we were lying and that the instructor wouldn't do that because he was one of their most esteemed instructors. She wouldn't even walk to the classroom to see if we were telling the truth. How would an entire class be able to leave their class without the instructor wondering what was up and going to look for them. Deborah denied any refunds or rescheduling of classes. I still wish I could get some sort of refund for this place. During admissions, I was told I would be placed in advanced classes because my work already proved I would be wasting my time in beginner classes. Of course when it came time to start, I was placed in beginner classes and they said they wouldn't change them. So I spent money without any ability to get a refund on classes for things I already knew. Half the time I spent teaching my fellow classmates better techniques than the instructors did. I've heard this place is getting shut down. Not the first rodeo the owner has been through like this though. Roger K is an educational crook and so is Deborah.

***BEWARE--Melissa stole almost $3,000 from my family***…read more Melissa was our doula for the birth of our son. She was excellent. When I found out I was pregnant with twins, we hired her again without hesitation. She was absent during my pregnancy except for 1 short phone call (which she rescheduled twice) and when she asked me via text to borrow $1200 for medical bills when I was 6 months pregnant. This was in addition to the full amount we had already paid her for her doula services. I told her I wasn't comfortable lending her money but I could pay her in advance for postpartum doula services. She agreed and I sent her the money. 1 week later she posted on Facebook that she had adopted a large dog--I thought that was odd seeing as she had just asked to borrow money from us. It was 3 weeks into COVID at the time I went into labor and doulas were not allowed in the hospital, so she could not attend our birth. She encapsulated my placenta and made a print of my placenta, as we had agreed upon. When I found out her partner at the time was an ER nurse with obvious close contact to COVID patients, I didn't feel comfortable with her providing postpartum doula services to my twins who were born 6 weeks premature. She said she understood and would give us a full refund but wasn't in a financial position to refund our money all at once. We said we understood and in June of 2020 we set up a payment plan for her to pay us $100 a month. We really cared about her and didn't want her to feel a financial strain during what we knew was a stressful time for everyone. From the time we set up the payment plan in July of 2020 to the time I wrote this review on July 10th, 2022 Melissa has paid us $200. My husband and I texted her several gentle reminders about our payment plan and she never responded to either of us. I reached out to a friend in the birth community to see if Melissa was ok. She told me Melissa was on a cross country vacation with her partner. I was shocked seeing as she owed us so much money. It wasn't until I threatened to contact the Better Business Bureau that she responded immediately with a slew of excuses and finally dropped off my placenta print on July 2, 2022 (2 years and 3 months after my twins were born). I hesitated to write this review because I saw a thread on a local birth Facebook page where her partner had threatened to kill someone who posted a negative review claiming a very similar experience to my own. Losing the money was unfortunate but feeling swindled by someone who we allowed to be so close to our family has been devastating. She has communicated no remorse. I would hate for anyone else to be taken advantage of during such a vulnerable time.

Photographers Education & Resource Center (PERC) is a great photography school in Raleigh area, offering an on-site education for amateur and professional photographers. The broad class and workshop selection covers all aspects of digital photography, including equipment (you'll rediscover your camera!), software, subject specific photography (portrait, architecture) and many more. Classes are small, with usually not more than 6 participants, which allows for individual attention from the instructor. Hands-on experience is an integral part of each class - would it be testing out macro equipment, shooting HDR followed by image processing or adjusting lighting for studio portraits. The classes are very comprehensive and I always learn a lot, whether it's an issue directly related to the class subject, or it happens to come up in the discussion. On top of classes and field workshops, PERC offers access to a library stocked with books and lots of training videos Ted Salamone, PERC founder, is a very good teacher and a knowledgeable and patient instructor. He is always eager to answer every question in a detailed way, understandable to participants on all levels. Ted is an experienced and creative photographer himself, always willing to share tricks of the trade and suggest inspirations. I have greatly enjoyed the monthly model sessions in the studio. They are a truly unique opportunity to practice composition, posing, lighting, working with live models and, very importantly, build the portfolio. I have been looking to become a professional photographer but none of the programs I have seen really satisfied me. When I took one of Ted Salamone's classes at the ArtsCenter in Carrboro, I discovered he had organized PERC to provide a more comprehensive series of workshops for people who are seriously interested in photography. After I took that, I learned that he was offering a Certification Program for anyone interested in becoming a professional photographer. Now I have finally found something to start me on my career path. But it's not only for those wanting to be a professional. These classes and seminars are extremely informative and give a great opportunity for hands-on work. If you want to dive in head first and take the Certification Program, this is a much better alternative to an online photography "institute" of questionable repute or a four-year college that teaches mainly irrelevant material for the cost of a new house. The classes are small and tailored to your needs. Ted's curriculum is solid and backed by decades of experience as a professional photographer. Anyone interested in photography should definitely look up PERC. read more

It's now been over a year that I've met with and studied under Ted Salamone and PERC. Ted's expertise as a professional photographer is unique in that not only does his technical expertise show through in everything he does, but his people skills in working with students helps them truly become the best that they can possibly be in the field of photography. I met Ted first through a "posing class" and then further studied under him in various technical classes in LIghtroom and other software. I've also worked with Ted in open modeling classes, being able to take advantage of his advanced lighting equipment to give me more confidence in my own abilities. PERC is awesome! I had just acquired a brand new DSLR camera to use on some upcoming trips, however I had absolutely no experience or confidence in using anything other than a 'point and shoot'. I was also overwhelmed with the functionality of my specific camera, so I needed help fast! I booked a 2 hour private tutoring session with Ted and it was exactly what I needed. He was able to teach me the fundamentals of manual photography, as well as the in's and out's of how to use my specific camera. I now have the confidence and skill needed to use my new camera on my upcoming trips to take great photos. Ted is extremely knowledgable, patient and friendly...an all around great teacher. I had taken a couple of photography classes (didn't get much from them) before registering for one of Ted's classes. I learned so much more by taking the class with PERC photography. Ted took the time to answer individual questions and worked with everyone hands on even with all the different types of cameras. I recently volunteered with other folks to help with Ted's photo shoots for the Nutcracker. Even though we were not taking classes he took the time to answer any questions we had; taught us about using different equipment; lighting; metering; how to take better pictures in manual; using different settings within the camera; and so much more. I took the basic digital photography class which is a 6hr class over the last weekend. I have been using SLR camera for a while but just as a point and shoot. Mainly because reading manuals did not make much sense to me as I would have forgotten everything by the time I actually tried to use on my camera. After this class, I can now really understand my camera as well as manuals much better. Definitely the best photography class I have attended. class size is small with alot of individual attention. Nice blend of theory and real practice opportunities. I was initially feeling I was in over my head in the macro class as I am still learning the techniques for using my DSLR, but I was quickly made more comfortable by Ted and his teaching style as well as his approach to pairing students up to help bring out the best in each. Ted does a great job running a well organized class with real hands-on instruction making sure everyone gets individual attention. He offers accessories after the class but never pushes any items on you. PERC is probably the best thing that's happened to the amateur studio photographer scene around Raleigh in a long time. Ted is very unique in his attitude towards student photographers. I had a great experience as a student at FlightGest Academy. It's a part 61 school that allowed me…read moreto train at my own pace. I got my PPL, IRA, CSEL, CFI and CFII there. I was always well prepared and passed all my checkrides on the first try. The planes were very well maintained and it was nice having the freedom to choose different airports to fly to. I highly recommend this school if you are looking to become a pilot in North Carolina or if you want to get additional ratings.

Dropped at least $50k with them and had more than 125 hours, many more than normal to solo. Passed my written exam with a lot of self study the first time but could not get them to authorize a solo to proceed nor could I get them to detail the issues as to why not. Seemed a bit of a scam to me because despite possibly hundreds of students, few seemed to be progressing and I very rarely heard of any students doing their solo. Owners are nice but totally hands off and unaware as is clueless chief flight instructor which is just plain bad business. I tried to switch to BlueLine, also at RDU which is more structured but they won't take FlightGest students which says something to pass on business. Choice is very limited but BlueLine may be the better long term choice for beginners.

They take more insurance plans than most places in this area and their provide exceptional care It took a few weeks to get in but the exam and fittings are a well-oiled machine with the doctor doing all the testing and exam instead of a tech which was nice. Dr. Sykes is very personable and attentive. He was able to find the right type of contact lens for reading and distance so I don't have to wear my wear my readers on the top of my head anymore. My husband goes here as well and they were very patient with teaching him how to use contact lenses. I like that it's smaller and patient-focused-not like the huge doc in a box places. I'd definitely recommend if you're looking for a place for all your eye care needs.

Within an hour I received a call that the repair was complete and the glasses were ready to be picked up. Not only was the repair prompt (and a lifesaver), it was free of charge. Based on this experience with Chapel Hill Eyecare, I would say that they are an excellent member of the local business community and I will definitely consider them for any future vision care needs.

Exceptional Color Expertise and Service…read more We had a great experience at Prism Paint + Design in Cary. Clint was friendly, professional, and clearly knows his stuff. We brought in our curtains and explained the room and lighting, and he immediately understood what we were trying to achieve. What really stood out was how quickly he looked at the fabric and confidently pulled the right Benjamin Moore colors. You could tell he has real experience and understands undertones and how lighting changes a color once it's on the wall. He also explained how the same dark paint can look different on two walls depending on the light, which helped us feel much more confident in our choice. We never felt rushed, and he took the time to answer our questions. It was a genuinely positive experience, and we'll definitely back!
