Lisa has designed a program that every instructor follows--which is great for kids since they know what's coming next. Our current instructor is Nina and she is all kinds of wonderful. My toddler was having a very hard time with being in the water without her mom. Nina was kind, very loving and patient with a screaming child. We're 4 lessons in and now my younger daughter happily walks to her teacher. Nina adjusted her lesson to accommodate my children's needs. Three weeks ago we approached the front desk to seek help in identifying a class as one of my sons was moved up to the next level. The girl (this one likely in her 20's) was sitting on the counter, playing on her phone, and it wasn't until my husband asked "could we get some help please" that she finally got off of her phone. Today, my son's mini class was being taught by two 'coaches' during one of the exercises, they turned their backs to the parents and kids and chit-chatted. Once again, my husband piped up and said, "is this all we are going to do today?" , they resumed their conversation before engaging back with the class. Needless to say, this behavior is incredibly dangerous when it comes to kids in the water and it is completely disrespectful to parents who are paying good money to get 'lessons'. It got to the point that my husband took my child out of the pool mid-lesson with no acknowledgment from the coaches. Given the behavior demonstrated over these past few weeks, we will be moving to another establishment for lessons. It is a shame that because of their 30-day cancellation policy, that we are having to pay another month's worth of classes that we will not be using based on the reckless, dangerous, and disrespectful service our family has been subjected to to. Please, please, please do your homework before signing your little one up for classes.

During this situation I was sitting in the room and had to scream "he's under the water" repeatedly in order for them to notice he had gone under. The lifeguard was not actively scanning the room or even standing, he was sitting talking to co-workers. After this situation we brought my son to the emergency room and luckily he was okay but when we addressed the issue with Goldfish via email they gaslit us and were dismissive of the situation. They claimed they had done nothing wrong and that I was merely an "anxious" parent. They refuse to respond to our email or send us video footage of the situation. Do not bring your child here under any circumstances.

This is a great neighborhood YMCA with a good variety of amenities and classes. The pool also has a 9-foot deep end and a few lap lanes. One downside is there's very little shade around the pool area. Inside, there are free weights and cardio areas, basketball courts, TRX setup, and several group fitness rooms offering classes like yoga, pilates, Zumba, pickleball, and other fitness programs. The instructors and staff have always been very friendly and welcoming. The men's and women's locker rooms also include a steam sauna and hot tub, which are nice amenities. However, the steam saunas are frequently closed or broken for maintenance, so I'd recommend calling ahead to confirm what's currently working before visiting. Another downside is that the lockers require you to bring your own lock--they do not have built-in combination locks like many newer gyms. They offer memberships for different age groups, and another huge plus is the free covered parking garage. However, during weekday evenings (around 6 p.m.), the garage can get pretty full due to after-work crowds and youth programs. I've been a YMCA member for several years and would definitely recommend this location.

In reality, you just need to pay attention to whether or not your kid and their teacher are a good match. My son was with one teacher for almost year with very slow progress and no float test pass. I think it was due to the combo of teacher being more cautious type and my son being more scared type. He was a 4 almost 5 year old in a class with 3 years olds. Anyway, it was my fault for not paying more attention and switching him to another class sooner. He is did great with his new teacher and passed his float test (finally). We had to switch him again recently due to scheduling conflicts and I will be more attentive to his progress from now on.

The teachers at this other school were all high school students that didn't have much experience. We decided to take her back to her favorite teacher Mr Charlie at this location and so far she has progressed tremendously. We did Goldfish for nearly 4 years from the time my son was 18 months old to 5.5 years old. We nearly got up to a quirky dog paddle that my son could do before we were unenrolled due to my nonpayment (mom brain during Spring break, whoops.) Two of my son's swim teachers we got to know and love (Emily & Juquan) were incredible and I think really set the foundation for my son to try to connect the dots with swimming. While I think this is an excellent opportunity for brand new swimmers, I'm a tiny bit hesitant to recommend long term because it just took so long for my son to get where he's at today. We don't have a personal pool, only a community pool that's open during the summer. So maybe that's on me? Great staff, clean facilities, reasonable pricing for what you get but the learning model needs to revisited to get swimmers swimming faster.
