This is a great neighborhood YMCA with a good variety of amenities and classes. One of the biggest highlights is the outdoor pool, which is heated during the winter and stays open year-round unless temperatures drop below freezing. The pool also has a 9-foot deep end and a few lap lanes. One downside is there's very little shade around the pool area. Inside, there are free weights and cardio areas, basketball courts, TRX setup, and several group fitness rooms offering classes like yoga, pilates, Zumba, pickleball, and other fitness programs. The instructors and staff have always been very friendly and welcoming. The men's and women's locker rooms also include a steam sauna and hot tub, which are nice amenities. However, the steam saunas are frequently closed or broken for maintenance, so I'd recommend calling ahead to confirm what's currently working before visiting. Another downside is that the lockers require you to bring your own lock--they do not have built-in combination locks like many newer gyms. They offer memberships for different age groups, and another huge plus is the free covered parking garage. However, during weekday evenings (around 6 p.m.), the garage can get pretty full due to after-work crowds and youth programs. Overpriced and scammy canceling policies. Gym is straight out of the 1970s with the equipment to match. Staff are a bunch of smug children.

I chose this gym bc of the pool and bc it doesn't allow filming inside the fitness center which in todays age it is an amazing experience to be able to workout without fear of ending up on social media without without your consent. I also like the weight room as it has an impressive selection of smith machines and cardio equipment such as the treadmills which have fans incorporated into their machines. There are 3 things I have noticed that I don't like: 1. the weight room doesn't have a bench that allows you to do workouts in declined mode and the staff wouldn't let me donate a commercial bench with that option. so Declined DB or BB press cannot be done which is strange as it is offered at most corporate gyms. 2. DB selections for the most common weights sets such as 10-25 lb are lacking with only 1 set of DB weights per designated weight for a gym that might have 15 people working out in free weight room (the very least offer *3 sets of 12 lb dumbbells). 3. the men's locker rooms wooden benches and the three leather seats by the tv are stinky dirty and we know this bc every-time I placed my towel on the seats or the bench to change out of my clothes; this foul smell is left on the towel. The smell is so potent that it transfers to my gym bag like trash left out on the sun for several days and I find myself having to wash the towel and the gym bag just to get the homeless stench off. I have learned to avoid the men's locker room like a plague and instead use the lockers found across the gym to put my belongings. read more

I've been a member for about 30 years. Trotter Y is my home away from home. I admit that I'm a swimmer & don't use the weight room or attend classes. I'm about to start. Trotter has a heated outdoor lap pool that is open year round. The hours are generous although beginning 2/10/25 it is closed 2:00-4:00. I generally can go at any time & get a lane without having to wait. I have a lane to myself more often than I have to share. I highly recommend the Y summer day camp. I don't have kids, but the Y has lots of activities for kids & seniors as well! read more

I alternate between this location and the downtown YMCA. I love to play racquetball so I I usually go in the morning because they only have 2 courts. I love the privacy of the racquetball court which makes me feel comfortable to play. The downside to the privacy is there is always random people opening the door to see if anyone is in the room. The staff is always friendly and helpful!! The gym does get crowded between 4-6pm so try to avoid those times. There is an additional fee for Pilates on top of the membership fee. Parking isn't too bad. There is a cafe that sells smoothies, food, etc.. read more

I truly wish I could give them zero star. How/where should I begin? Anyway, I was a member from 2006-2008. I just re-joined on 7/1/24 with my boy. Everything was pretty good (classes, weight lifting and treadmill) not until I found out at 8pm that my car got broken into after we were done with soccer summer camp/swimming!!!! Another car also got broken into and the victim couple called the police on my behalf!!!! It pissed me off because the monetary loss (close to $1K) plus the extreme inconvenience my family had to deal with last night! We had to drive to the Regency Square police station at around 10pm after waiting for 3 hours (yeah no police showed up). I was in my bathing suit all these times ... waiting, kept waiting. Trotter YMCA didn't do much to help except they took my information. We went home at 11pm. Since we no longer feel safe to be there, I went ahead and got our membership canceled today! Thank you Trotter YMCA for ruining everything by not hiring security guards to patrol all the parking lots!!! The place is becoming very ghetto. The YMCA, contrary to its image and stated goal of working to benefit the community, is not worth it and is just a money grubbing business disguised as a charity. The Y claims to want to serve its members, but its polices and procedures are just designed to take your money to support its bloated staff, administration and employees. The gym is not clean because the Y refuses to hire staff to maintain it. Equipment is often broken. The locker rooms, showers and related facilities are unclean, poorly maintained, rarely working (in terms of the hot tub and steam room), lockers have not been updated in years, the carpet is old and teaming with life, and the showers are hit or miss as to whether you will get hot water, aside from being a place where you should think twice about exposing your naked skin. But, living up to its reputation, the locker room is filled with creepy characters who hang out for their entertainment. And, on top of all of this, the Y has a cancellation policy straight out of the 1980s, making it difficult to cancel a membership and requiring that you jump through multiple hoops and provide answers they deem satisfactory in order for you to cancel. It was easier to cancel a Bally's gym membership. The staff says that people complain all the time about the cancellation policy, but management is determined to collect money for as long as possible. Although you may think that you are supporting the community by going to the Y, do yourself a favor and find a local charity and a real gym. The Y is neither of those things. read more

The building is very old and sometimes feels too warm during the summer. There are no workout or lockeroom towels and you must bring your own lock. I found some nasty toe nail clippings in the men's locker room as I was changing before my workout. And finally, after I canceled my membership, I was still being charged for several months and wasn't refunded. I don't recommend this gym to any working professionals in the area. read more

Originally in the Netherlands (in Trotterdam), this Gym recently relocated to the fancy part of Houston (Galleria area), and is now keeping Houstonians relatively fit and helping them channel their insane road rage tendencies into something other than insane road rage. It's not working very well. The Trotter YMCA is a friendly gym with steep prices that are probably worth it if you live or work close by enough so that you don't have to suffer a long commute in order to get here. I've mostly had really good experiences here (especially the tall gay guy hitting on me in the locker room, and no that's not a joke). There's a restaurant on-site which is overpriced (Island Grill) but has a few decent options, good smoothies, and a fairly decent chicken breast special once a week. The pool is fine, but busy. The weights room is more than a little cramped and outdated. Some of the equipment really doesn't do it for me. The Y downtown and the Y back in Buffalo I used before this one, both had this location beat in weight terms. The area where you do cardio, however, is fantastic. Wide open, brand new, with tons of equipment. They need more bikes, but so do all the Ys, really. It blows my mind that they get rid of the best bikes and bring in more of the brand new types that nobody uses. One of the girls working here (also an avid Yelper) is pretty amazing. She's the best advertisement possible for this gym. Other than the weight room, my main gripe would be that they start locking the doors way before closing time (sometimes 25 minutes early), so if you forget something, or need to get back in, you will be standing outside potentially for quite awhile to be allowed back in. That's actually against company policy, but this location does it anyway. Many others do not. At least it's not the Trouter Family YMCA. That would be way worse. It would smell of fish. read more

For swim lessons: Would not recommend and would go elsewhere. The day after May 23, 2024 when the major storm wrecked havoc on the city and the cities power (especially my neighborhood) they chose to keep my 3yr old's son's swim lesson and would not refund it. I did not have power for a week and they insisted to not work with simply rescheduling it because I was not able to contact them on canceling on time. read more

I'm a member at the Tellepsen YMCA downtown but I'll come here if I want to work out late at night because this gym closes one hour later than Tellepsen. This gym closes at 11 Monday through Thursday, 9 on Friday, and 7 on Saturday and Sunday. My favorite instructor is Terry! He teaches BodyPump at 4 and RPM at 5 on Sunday. He has a lot of energy and motivates you to get the most out of your workout. I don't like the BodyPump weights at this gym because I'm used to the weights at Tellepsen. The group exercise classes are on the first floor, the entrance is on the second floor, and the exercise equipment is on the third floor. There is also a lap pool and a leisure pool with a slide outside. This gym is bigger than Tellepsen but I prefer Tellepsen because it's newer. read more

My children love to play in the water so I thought it would be a great idea to get them swim lessons. After doing quite a bit of research, I decided the YMCA would be the best place for them. I toured the facility one day and was assisted by Stacy. She was able to answer all of my questions, address all concerns, and get the kids signed up. The kids completed an 8 class session with Ms. Jessica. She was so patient and kind. My kids can be a little intense so they need someone like her otherwise it wouldn't be a good experience for anyone. I plan on purchasing 8 class sessions throughout the entire summer so they can continue their learning. The classes were helpful, and I did see improvement from the first class to the last; however, I don't think 30 minutes per session is sufficient. One class was canceled because a toddler threw up in the pool. We were told that to make up for it, they would add 10 minutes to the next three sessions. Well, the ten minutes was only added to one session. The manager told me only 7/8 sessions are guaranteed. I was a little put off by that, but I will book more just for Ms. Jessica. (I have been told all of the instructors are as nice as she is, but I only have experience with her). I will add that we do not have a membership as we would not get value out of it, but with the purchase of swimming lessons, the kids were allowed to come and utilize the pool. They also were given a free karate class. They enjoyed it, but I felt there were too many kids in the class for them to truly get anything out of it. I prefer the smaller classes where they can get more attention and correction if needed. Instructor was wonderful though! read more

A few years back, this business did not hesitate automatically sending my bills to collections. It wasn't until I went through my bank statements that I realized they were deducting monthly charges twice over consecutive months (one for past due and the other for collections). No notification, from Trotter YMCA, of billing issues prior to this. What was the reason for this? Because my bank had preemptively changed my credit card for security reasons. I called Trotter YMCA about this issue and they required me in person to make such changes. Then apply to the collections to receive refunds for the second set of monthly charges made. This happened on two different occasions during my membership. Pretty terrible service and experience. read more

Summer Camp 2018 - Worst Experience Ever! At first we were so excited for the summer camp, specially because they had added specialty camp options. However, once camps started, it was a total mass! They did not rotate the kids between the specialty & regular camps as they were suppose to. The camp staff is pretty much college kids, which great because they tent to have more things in common with the kids, however some of the staff should not had been allowed to work there. If you do not have patience to work with kids, then they find something else, it is a miserable way to spend the summer if all you do is yelling at the kids. Honestly, Nana and Jessica seem to have control and anger issues. I meet with the camp coordinator Alex multiple times, but nothing was really done. And not to mention that my daughter was changing in the bathroom when they allowed boys to go in! read more

Joined this gym reluctantly after my husband kept asking me to join him. I had previously gone to FitCon or gym studios/boutiques around town that are more geared towards ppl in their 20's-40's. Going here, I feel like it's a bunch of families and their grandparents - with the music to match. They have a lot of great facilities - pool, classes, tennis courts, outdoor garden, fields, etc. so yes, definitely perfect for families. I miss being around younger, fit ppl my age haha. However, the Y recently upgraded almost all of their equipment upstairs and rearranged the weight room so it looks a lot more spacious now, and I LOVE it! It's a 5 min jog from my place and since they actually used my membership money to purchase new equipment, that makes up for the bad music and older crowd. I get it, it's the YMCA - but maybe change the music to something that actually plays on the radio in this century after 6pm? read more

The weights are decent and the office staff are generally agreeable. Couple things: I have had three bottles stolen here. Take that for what it's worth. I simply left them at the machine, walked away for a second, and they were gone. There have been a couple times, tonight being one, where I asked the front desk before their closing time if I could make a change to my account. I get that there were only a few minutes left before they closed, but I don't think taking my wife off of the account should have taken more than one minute. If you say you're open until a certain time, you should stay open until then, not a few minutes before because you are about to close. I give three stars (wish I could give 2.5) because this place has been pretty middle of the road and I don't feel like the people who work here really go above and beyond to help you. I would say if you can afford to pay slightly more, do it and you'll probably have a better experience. read more

The kids have had a few sessions of swimming, and the teachers are amazing, the are patient and really work with the kids to make sure that they are learning. I've been a member of the Y for almost two years and I love every minute of it. The staff is helpful, friendly, and generally good people. The equipment just got updated so everything is top-notch. You get access to tons of classes with your membership which is awesome, too. There are youth programs, a cafe and restaurant, mini water park, boot camps, and a secure parking garage. The best part is Dan Dan, the Towel Man, who greets you everyday with a bright smile and a fresh towel. Some people squirm at the thought of group locker rooms, but I've met some amazingly sweet people who I look forward to seeing every morning. The showers are well kept and private. Plus there's a whirl pool in the lady's room and a sauna in the men's. AND if you're a lady and you want some additionally privacy, there's a separate women's workout room that's away from the more open workout area. Overall, I love this YMCA and I look forward to visiting it every day. read more

My husband I just recently joined this Y and we're loving it! The staff have all been really friendly. There's a good selection of classes. Lots of equipment and I've never had trouble finding an available machine. I personally think it's pretty affordable - $82 a month for both my husband and myself and no contract! I thought parking might be an issue, but so far, it hasn't been. The upstairs is a little stinky - smells like lots of accumulated sweat, but it's not unbearable and I usually don't even notice it after the first couple of seconds. I'm super happy to be a member of the YMCA, but I would not encourage you to go to this location because I don't want it to get too crowded. Just kidding! Kinda. read more

Love it here. Downside, their lap pool is outside (so swimming during the winter wasn't for me). However, some people still do it. They say the pool is heated year round, but it's still cold for me. The women's workout area is perfect for me. It has basic workout instruments, a peaceful environment, mostly clean, and much better for women that don't feel comfortable in the big workout room. Parking can be hard, but they have additional parking across the street, so it has not been a problem for me. read more

Was in Houston for work, needed a day off gym. Very very well stocked super modern ymca. All the machines and gear was in great condition. The people were nice, well stocked snack bar that made great smoothies. If I can't find an old school bodybuilding gym in town places like this ymca are my next go to over large chain gyms. read more

The gym has a lot of equipment, up to date cardio and weights etc. We can recommend the kaarte lessons. Sensei Rueben teaches my daughter and she really likes it. Karate lessons are to be paid extra tough. Large pool as well. Looks good but I never tried. Parking can be busy in the evenings. But parking garage rooftop always has spots. Lots of free work out lessons as well. Open on weekends, although only 10am onwards on Sunday. read more
