A Lerios Machine Shop - Yes, they really will make you a diving helmet the old-fashioned way, but it will cost dearly.

    A Lerios Machine Shop

Mr. Lerios built his own molds to use in banging out the shapes of the shoulder-pieces and bonnets for the helmets and made all the various fittings by hand in his machine shop in Tarpon Springs for not just years, but indeed decades, outfitting most of the diving operations in the area. His grandson, Nicholas Toth, had planned to become a lawyer but spent a summer helping Lerios in the shop and was hooked on the craft. Today, Mr. Toth runs the shop and still does metalwork for marine concerns and will apparently still make a diving helmet the same way--and with the original molds and tools--Lerios did, but it will cost you $10,000 or more. Mr. Toth is one of very few--possibly the only--craftsmen remaining who can hand-craft a diving helmet that is fully functional and fit for commercial duty. The machine shop to me is a real gem: in Tarpon Springs you have plenty of boat tours, excursions to see dolphins, and shops selling sponges as well as tacky T-shirts and snow globes, but here is a real, honest, piece of Tarpon Springs sponge-diving history that is still with us, still in business. It's worth more than every Greek restaurant serving watered-down classics of Greek cuisine or shop selling plastic dolphins you find along the sponge boat docks. I hope if Mr. Toth retires, some effort is made to retain his shop and its history as a museum.
