I'm grateful that Perkins is still around and that they're still busy. It's been over 10 years since we've both been here. Their blueberry pancakes and waffles are still as good as we remember. The service was great, the coffee & meal were delicious and the restaurant is still as comforting as it used to be.

The burger was only 2.5/5 for the thin patty. Service was 2/5. But I really liked the way they presented the potato! 5/5

I've been to Perkins' many times before; but this visit was disappointing. Let me explain why: It turns out that the menu is really not that appealing if you're trying to watch your calorie intake. I had a very hard time choosing a healthy salad as there doesn't seem to be one that does not have breaded and fried proteins, or processed meats (which I generally try to avoid. Except I love certain salamis. Like I said, I try...) I had decided before arriving to order a salad with chicken on it. The only similar option on the menu had breaded and fried chicken. No thanks right now for KFC!! I love it more than it loves me. :-/ This visit, I chose the Turkey Cobb salad. Overall, not that impressive: not one kernel of corn, and although the bacon was real, it seemed the turkey was not - ie: processed. The avocados were perfect, though. Dressing is apparently always served on the side; good thing, as they give too much of it! As for the service, it was ok, nothing special. On the plus side, they did manage to make room for our party of 12 without much trouble. And our food orders all came out at the same time. Otherwise this experience would not garner a 3-star.

They have Strawberry Specials going on right now.

I had lunch here with some girlfriends today and overall it was pretty good. So Perkins is an American chain. It's reminiscent of Denny's to me. Portions are huge, which I appreciate, and prices are reasonable, which I also appreciate. Service is also very friendly and competent. I got the Cobb Salad ($15.49). Overall, it was good, but my big disappointment was that the turkey was deli meat :( On the menu it said "Butterball roasted turkey" so I was thinking like the Butterball turkey I have at Thanksgiving, but I was so sad that it was deli meat turkey! However, other than that, the salad was great. It had real mixed greens, not just romaine and iceberg, like at some places, in fact, it had no iceberg lettuce, hurray! It also had red cabbage, carrots, avocado, tomatoes, feta cheese, bacon, and a boiled egg. The avocado was fresh and green :) All the vegetables were in fact fresh. I got the white balsamic dressing on the side and it arrived as requested. Boy do they give you a lot of dressing. I used maybe a tenth of it. It was flavourful and I liked it, but I like my salad on the dry side. I considered getting one of their huge cookies (only $1.59) for dessert, but I was stuffed silly after my salad. This is not gourmet food, it's casual chain restaurant dining. For what it is, it is great. They serve breakfast all day, and the menu has variety, although you won't find anything too exotic or adventurous. It's very popular with the over 60 crowd for some reason. I felt very young there, haha. My last time at Perkins prior to today was in 2010, as I'm not usually a fan of chain restaurants, but one of my technologically-challenged friends took me there for lunch to thank me for helping her set up an online dating profile. Believe me, it is a sad state of affairs when I am considered the Tech Support (RAM - yeah that's a male sheep, but why are you yelling it at me? Lol). Anyway, she met her current husband through that dating site, so this is a feel good story all around. So 8 years later, we finally found ourselves back there, haha. If you're looking for good ol' American food with good ol' American portions, Perkins is the place ;)

Very friendly service, staff not engaged with customers were quick with a smile or hello. Portion size was large as you expect with the "American Breakfast" type of place. Our server was excellent and attentive. Food tasted great, only downside was it could have been warmer/hotter. I would have loved some grits! Solid 3+ stars, 4 if the food was hot

It wasn't too bad, the service was great, the bacon was the star of the dish, eggs were average, the hash, should of been seared more on the flat top and they should of added onions to it. I loved the fact they leave you a coffee pot on the table for you.

I normally love these old fashioned American diners like the now extinct Marie Callenders and Carrows but I can't say I was impressed with this one. First off, my tea tasted nasty. It was the hot or should I say lukewarm water that tasted really funky. That just says poor quality control or 'I just don't care', because I find it hard to believe that they're unaware of such foul tasting water. Lunch was a hamburger. It looked good but it was made with one of those cheap frozen patties and their fries are not worth the calories. My husband had a breakfast dish. The minuscule portion of bacon was paper thin (see pic) and the waffles cold. Our waiter couldn't have been any nicer or more efficient.

This is a popular alternative from your breakfast restaurant like Chez Cora's. Your typical meat and potatoes style food. This offers pancakes, (French) toasts, bacon, ham, eggs, etc...not a lot of fruits, healthy choices or vegan/gluten options. This extends too to their decor, not modern or fancy. Service is always attentive. Always packed each weekend morning at this St. Laurent location in Ottawa. They roll here. Good bang for your buck. Great for families! $$

It's a little like going home for dinner. This establishment doesn't try to be anything other than it is. When that's all you want then I'm glad that this place is still around. While the atmosphere is casual and diner-y, the food is pretty homegrown. Stuff you might find your Mom or Grandmother serving. Simple plain food. I like coming here for reasonable prices, edible food and the fact they will put a POT OF COFFEE on the table when you stumble in for breakfast. Which they serve all day!

Arrived at Perkins just before closing time (usually the restaurant is open 24/7 however things are different during COVID) in search of dessert. The guy who served us our coconut cream and apple caramel pies was awesome, and so were the pies. The coconut cream pie was almost like ice cream cake which I'm a fan of. The caramel apple pie was good but not as good as the coconut cream according to my parents who tried both pies, which I think may have been their way of nudging me to not try any of their caramel apple. Whatever, I'm more than happy with just this coconut cream pie. My family and I took our dessert home. Although Perkins is mostly known for its all-day breakfast food, they definitely hold up as a bakery.

Good food, good service. Came here twice on my trip. First time to Perkins as an American. It reminds me of Bob Evans.

The Long Version: The Alembic Stillhouse is the restaurant/pub attached to the Cartier Suites Hotel. It has the usual pub fare like fish and chips, burgers, chicken fingers, etc. but it also has some Latin American dishes like arepas, tequenos, tostones and churros. My husband and I had dinner here and it was overall really good. I had the Arepa with Soup ($15) and added a second arepa for an additional $9. I got the Pabellon and Reina arepas. The soup of the day was tomato basil. My husband had the fish and chips ($18). I really enjoyed my arepas. The Pabellon was layered with shredded beef and feta cheese on top (the open end), and black beans and plantains on the bottom (the closed end). The Reina had the filling uniformly distributed - pieces of lean chicken breast mixed with avocado and cilantro crema. The corn meal arepa shell was crispy on the outside and held the fillings very well. I can't even decide which one I liked better because both were so good. I didn't like the tomato basil soup though. It had a cheesy note to it which I found off-putting. However, my husband loved it, so I gave it to him. My husband enjoyed his fish and chips. I had a bit of his fish and while it was crispy on the outside and moist and flaky on the inside, it had a strong fishy smell and taste that I didn't like. The fries were crispy and hot but were from frozen. Service was pleasant. The place has a pub feel. They have karaoke on Fridays starting at 8pm. We left before it started, lol. 5 stars for the arepas, 3 stars for the other food I tried, so 4 stars overall since service was good. I would get the arepas again. Street parking is the best bet (some streets have free parking and some streets have paid metered parking which is about $3 an hour). There's indoor hotel parking but it's a daily rate and over $20. They have the latest Happy Hour in the Byward Market! 5pm-7pm, everyday. All cocktails are $11 and all appetizers are half price. I got the blackened chicken salad, regularly $26 but was only $13 during Happy Hour. It was a good size too, more like a dinner salad than an appetizer (although at the regular price, I would expect it to be large). It was mixed greens, watermelon beets, cucumbers, grape tomatoes, pomegranate seeds and goat cheese, with blackened chicken breast. I asked for the salad dressing on the side and it arrived as requested. The dressing was a Sherry Dijon vinaigrette and was great. The vegetables were fresh and the chicken was flavourful and not dry at all. I also had the Guava Rush, minus the Red Bull. It was fruity and I enjoyed it. It has rum, spiced rum, orange liqueur, strawberry syrup, guava juice and lime. It was garnished with a slice of dried pineapple and a cocktail umbrella. The interior is beautiful, as is the hidden patio out back. Washrooms are down a flight of stairs and it's borderline creepy down there, lol. The Long Version: I was here for a colleague's retirement party. Rooftop Ottawa is part of YOW - York on William, which is, you guessed it at the corner of York St and William St. YOW is also the airport code for Ottawa, so I thought the name was clever. YOW - York on William is a collection of 3 venues, one on each floor. Apothecary Lounge (a speakeasy) is in the basement, Starling (a bird-themed restaurant) is on the ground floor, and Rooftop Ottawa is on the roof top. The view is beautiful. You can see all of the Byward Market. It's especially pretty at sunset. The food is also colourful and pretty. I got the Crispy Chicken Sandwich with a side salad ($26) and a Purple Martin cocktail ($18). The Purple Martin had a pretty purple colour from ube syrup and butterfly pea flower and tasted good too. The chicken sandwich was a bit monochromatic. But the side salad had vibrant pink hues from watermelon radish, beets and beet juice-soaked pickled onions. I also loved that the lettuce was a spring mix and not the dreaded iceberg lettuce, lol. I asked for the dressing on the side and it came as requested. The dressing was a creamy green dressing. I felt the sandwich could have benefited from some lettuce or shredded cabbage though because it was just fried chicken, pickles and bread. I did appreciate that it wasn't overly sauced and not wet or soggy. The fried chicken had a good crunch to it. It looked large, but had a lot of breading, so the amount of protein was not what it seemed initially. The flavour was good though. Service was excellent. We were served by Juliette and she was fantastic. Attentive without being intrusive and took great care in ensuring I wasn't served anything I was allergic to. She also made a point to advise our group that since we were a large group (around 15) that there would be an automatic 20% gratuity added to the bill. I appreciated the disclosure. Definitely 5-stars for Juliette. The YOW - York on William is in one of the oldest buildings in Ottawa, built in 1875. It's where The Fish Market, Coasters and Vineyards used to be. Paid street parking or paid parkade parking only. Review #179 (2025)
