I don't ever remember coming here as a kid but this is a cool little spot in Belfast, we were up visiting from Florida and we are both Maine natives. It wasn't busy and they didn't have a lot of stuff like they usually do my roommate commented. We both bought fudge and I grabbed a few little Maine items to bring back home. Wish I could have experienced the old school Perry's Nut House that everyone keeps talking about.

Wow. Just, wow. From what I've read, this place used to be crazier. Which is insane, because they've already set the bar so high. If you're looking for some silly silly touristy gifts, this is the place for you. Maybe you've got children and you need to placate them with some cheap silly toys. Perry's will fit the bill. They've also got some bulk candy and nuts. Come for the crazy, stay for the fudge. Seriously, the fudge is reeeeally good. We sampled a few kinds (my favorites were the Pirate- aka buttered rum, pistachio, and the chocolate orange) before picking up some for ourselves and some for gifts. All kidding aside, I am always down for a kitschy place that's full of local lore (ask about the elephant). We ended up taking home a couple of souvenirs for ourselves because we happen to have a thing for nuts. Heh heh. It's worth it to pop in.

Several years ago I would have given Perry's five stars. This was a regular stop on our family vacations up Coastal Route One in Maine. I can remember the early days of Perry's when the second floor of the old house was a museum of sorts. It was a bizarre museum, however, showcasing a variety of animals which had the unfortunate fate of crossing paths with a taxidermist. Creepy, but as a child I was amazed and actually looked forward to this. It was also somewhat educational as the exhibits did offer some fun facts about each animal. Today the second floor of the home is closed and all that is left is the gift shop. Beware this place is a total tourist trap, but yet still should be experienced by all. To the best of my knowledge the old home has changed ownership over time. There has been a "for sale" sign out front the last couple times I have visited and I hope Perry's manages to keep its doors open into the future. Sadly though, the shop is not what it used to be and lacks a lot of its original charm. The gift shop is an unusual assortment of candy, mixed nuts, cheesy souvenirs, and odd decor. Although most of the animal exhibits have gone extinct, you will be greeted by a large gorilla at the front door and a stuffed bear looms out back baring his teeth. Oh and I cannot forget the poor decrepit Albatross in the glass case. No guarantees on the freshness of the fudge although I think it is one of their specialties. My mom and I were the first customers in the store at 9am this past Tuesday. The fudge sat in the case from the day before (or maybe longer) uncovered with several pieces already cut. Perhaps it keeps awhile? I don't eat it so I'm no fudge expert. It just did not appear super fresh. Despite my three stars I do believe everyone should experience Perry's at least once. I just do not want to set anyone's expectations too high. It is not the same place it once was, but yet is still unforgettable.

Eh. Not very original, clean or delightful. I don't oilfield have given it 1 star except the snacks we bought were fresh and tasty.

I love the name of this shop! The owners guessed the words to my secret mantra. I was happy to…read morelearn that a gourmet cheese store had recently arrived to this corner of Maine. Located around the corner from the main drag it's easy to find because of the eye catching chalkboard signs we saw on the sidewalk which point the way for you. There was an initial big disappointment here which turned out to be the first thing you are confronted with at the entrance and that is the metal spiral staircase that one must climb in order to enter. There is no other way in that I could see. Never mind how treacherous this could be on an icy winter day, the real tragedy here is that this means access is barred to those with certain disabilities, anyone in a wheelchair, a parent with a stroller, a frail elder and others that may have trouble navigating such a wretched means of entry. Once safely inside the space it's small but quite inviting and pleasantly decorated. The bounty is contained in one large glass-fronted refrigerated case and it's delightfully packed with cheeses from places near and far. The friendly man working there who I believe was the owner, told us to just let him know whatever it was we wanted to sample. Say no more! Already displayed were a few plates of already cut up cheese samples from which I took a number of nibbles. I love when shops do this although for hygiene sake I would have loved some toothpicks to spear the cheese rather than have everyone use fingers. I decided on the cutely named Ewephoria which is a sheep's milk cheese (get it?) from Holland. It's a hard cheese that was nutty and buttery. We loved it, so I'll be on the look out for it again. There were some artisinal salamis for sale as well that intrigued my husband. From trips to Tuscany where boar is king, he has become especially fond of this kind of meat. He bought some of the smoked boar sausage that he said was delicious. The shop also sells a small but decent selection of wines and some gourmet crackers. We wished they sold some fresh crusty baguettes which would have made this one stop shopping for the perfect picnic fare. There is nothing about what they are selling and how they are selling it inside the shop that I have any trouble with. It's great. What I hope is that the owners who have come up with a great idea for this town, will figure out a way to address the need for access to all. And from the owner's point of view, they should be thinking about all the customers who they are missing because they can't get in. I don't know how the appropriate changes can be done at this exact location unless there was a secret elevator or entrance I missed. But if not, there have got to be other available storefronts somewhere in Belfast in which to set up shop. Hello, calling Belfast realtors... This is dedicated to Michele R. whose reviews always take accessibility into consideration and from whom I've learned much about this issue. Her well articulated reviews have helped me to be more mindful about this kind of equality.
