So this is a restaurant that I did not make a reservation for, nor was I paying - it was one my parents specifically recommended, as they'd been hearing a bunch of buzz about it having been voted one of the best restaurants in the area, and knew we're foodies, so they invited us to visit for my birthday a couple months ago and made a reservation for us to go out with them. Having done that, we all agreed, we were a bit underwhelmed, and would probably stick to Vim in the future. I will say, start to finish, their service was great. It's easy to have great service when the place is so small, but that doesn't mean everyone does. Service was great. I was rather less impressed, though, given how relatively small the menu already was, and how early in the evening we were there, that they were already out of several things, including the only appetizer I had personally been particularly interested in trying, so we just ordered entrees. The booth table we were sitting at also felt a bit cramped - the tables by the window looked a bit nicer. They did bring complimentary bread - but we also all agreed that their complimentary bread was almost, though not quite, inedibly salty. I definitely did appreciate, at least, given that obviously all their wine is going to be expensive, at a place like this, that they did have a fairly substantial selection of local craft beer, including multiple local craft ciders. If I had been more impressed by the food, I would definitely have been super happy about that. Cider is so versatile, and not on nearly enough menus.) Anyway, I tried their braised short rib dish - it was... good. I think that's really the best way to describe it - I enjoyed eating it, but I still have random memories occasionally how great a short rib dish I had several years ago at Vim was, and I really don't even remember exactly what this one was garnished with or anything. I had no complaints, but there wasn't anything about it that would make me specifically want to come back, nor to have that amount of money spent, even if it was my parents', when they could spend it elsewhere. (My mom made similar comments about the fish entree she ordered.) That said, since we didn't order any appetizers, we did have room to share a dessert, their panna cotta with fruit, and we all agreed, the dessert was definitely the highlight. We loved our experience here. Between two of us we split an appetizer and two mains, and that was a perfect quantity for food. The beet and artichoke soup was delicious, and beautifully plated. A meal to remember! My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at Persephone last night. Everything was exquisite and we can't wait to take our friends to enjoy this restaurant with us. We had a truly lovely anniversary dinner at Persephone last August. We weren't expecting the interior to be so stylish and well-maintained, and the view of the gulch provided a beautiful backdrop for the evening. The staff was very courteous and attentive, making the night feel even more special. The food was delicious and beautifully presented--every dish was a highlight. It's our first time here. We've been wanting to come since we move to SC. We've been to all fine dining in Santa tuz area and Aptos, this is the last place and we all checked the box. My coworker highly recommended this quaint little restaurant. I made reservations a couple weeks beforehand online. We arrived on time and were promptly seated. The staff is very friendly and attentive. I loved the intimate cozy feel of this place. Looks like a charming home turned into a restaurant. Lovely paintings and cute decorations all around. My husband and I have heard good things about Persephone, so we decided to have dinner there for our anniversary. The setting is lovely and the food was good. I would go back, but there are other local restaurants that I would choose first. We had an early reservation on a Saturday, so parking was easily available in their small lot. We were warmly greeted and were seated at a cute table in the corner. We were served water and house-made focaccia. The focaccia comes with hummus as well as olive oil with balsamico. The server returned to take our order. Other than bringing our food, the server was not intrusive. As starters, I had the Parmesan custard with pea purée, pea shoots, and radish. It was mild and enjoyable. The purée did not have a lot of flavor. My husband started with the beet and artichoke soup, which he thought was delicious. For our entrees, my husband had the catch of the day, which was sole, and I had the risotto. My husband said that the sole was fishy and I would not have liked it. My risotto was so hot that I burned my tongue, so I had to move it around and let the steam release for a while before I could eat it. It was very creamy and the artichoke gave a nice punch of flavor. Otherwise, the pieces of chicken seemed over cooked and didn't have a lot of flavor. The dish was fairly one-note, other than the artichoke. Visually, the risotto lacked color and appeal. Maybe some fresh asparagus or peas would brighten the appearance. For dessert, my husband had the almond cake with strawberry and rhubarb and I had the chocolate gelato. The gelato was very chocolatey and creamy! My husband loves strawberry and rhubarb; he said the cake dominated his dessert. The setting, service, and food at Persephone are all very nice. The food highlight was probably the soup. We walked in on a Wednesday night. Enjoyed dinner here. They have quite an extensive list of wine. I ordered the catch of the day which was a sole with polenta and romanesco. The three of us were immediately greeted by a smiling staff member, we felt very welcomed. The menu was a variety of things you don't find at many restaurants. The burrata was perfect to share with our first cocktail. We ordered the beet borscht soup, which was so good, I wish I didn't have to share. The homemade focaccia was perfect to dip in the soup. My husband loved his trout dish. I rarely order pasta, but so glad I did (bolognese with pappardelle), my brother ordered seared strip sirloin, perfectly prepared and enough to offer us each a bite. The food is amazing, really fresh and very delicious, which made the price more worth it. The atmosphere was intimate and cozy which also made it very pleasant inside. The service? Not great. We arrived at 7:30 (1 hour before closing) and it didn't seem like there were very many customers when there were only about 4-5 tables full out of maybe 12? I'm not talking about how long it took for the food to come out (we ordered everything at once to make sure we didn't take up their time). I'm talking about how we sat for a while before our server came, and then she barely came to check on us. I ended up having to cancel my second drink because the server forgot it, and our meal was done at that point. Overall, it felt like they were antsy to get us out, despite the slow service. The staff had very noisy personal conversations that carried across the room, especially while we waited patiently to get our check at the end. Then when our group and the last group behind us left, we could hear them cheering and whooping and hollering and high-fiving when we were right outside waiting for our uber. It felt like we were more of a nuisance, and do not want to return to that kind of experience, especially with the price we paid for our meal. read more

The food was good. The servings fine and the ambiance was nice until a party of 4 arrived--the sound really echos. It was very loud even with a table for 6 empty in the center of the room. The service left much to be desired. I ordered a glass of wine--it was a small glass with a very short pour. I then ordered a bottle and it took so long to come that we were finished with our entres'...AND it was the wrong wine. He said they had a hard time finding it in the cellar. We cancelled the wine bottle. When my appetizer dish was finished he took my fork--then never brought another with the entre' and NOONE was in the dining room for a very long time--just at the end of the room talking to each other. I got up and took a fork from an empty table as my food was getting cold. I mentioned it to the waiter so that fork was replaced there and he never apologized for not getting me a fork or stopping back. We are light eaters so asked for a "to go" box. In lieu of that they jammed parts of my dinner and parts of my husband's into small paper soup cups. They did, indeed, have a to go box as they put the little cups in one when I asked for a bag the cups in. Not sure if we would go back. About a 3.5 star experience: My husband and I stop by for lunch and chose to sit outside. I love their outdoor patio area! It's so quaint and relaxing! The service is here is also really great! Now onto the food... For appetizer, we ordered the Parmesan Budino which was easily my favorite part of the meal. I've never had Parmesan custard before, but it tasted pretty much exactly as it sounds and was delicious! 5/5! We also got a salad that I was not a fan of and for $16, felt like a rip off. It had literally 6 pieces of greens on it. Mostly bread, a couple bites of tiny squares of sweet potato, and such a small serving of cheese that my husband and I ate all the cheese offered in one bite. Would not recommend at all. The sandwich we chose was the Toscano, which came with chicken, provolone cheese, and some greens. Chicken was slightly on the drier side but not too bad. Came here with my family for my 30th bday dinner and it did not disappoint. We made a reservation for inside as I think the ambiance and vibes are better than the rock patio outside. We started with the burrata (not pictured) even tho it was maybe my favorite part of the meal! There were 6 of us so we ordered two and glad we did. The only thing I would have liked better is something to eat the burrata with? It didn't come with any sort of cracker, bread, etc so you just ate it as is. I still enjoyed it. Next we got two bowls of the Beet and Artichoke Soup with Dill Crema and a bowl of the beef and mushroom soup. Both were SO flavorful and delish. Although if I had to choose, I would recommend the beet soup because it was just so unique and full of mixed flavors. The added dill crema ontop was incredible. We all got our own main dishes, pictured in review. They were all very good, with the exception of the daily special which was some sort of mushroom and cheese pasta/lasagna. It came out so dry, with barely any sauce. It looked like it had been sitting for a bit as the pasta was dry/cracking on the edges. When we notified our server he said that it had been a complaint a couple other times in the night so he apologized and agreed. Although they didn't remove it from our bill which was a tad disappointing as it was acknowledged as a mess up on their part. They did add in an additional free bday desert I assume to make up for this. The fish of the day was cooked perfectly but the potatoes to accompany them were still very hard. Everything had good flavor tho. Everyone enjoyed their meals for the most part! Our sever was very patient in our wine tastings. We got a couple bottles for the table, locally made. The hazelnut semmifrado was the better dessert of the two, but both were good. We were seated in the corner with a great view. Really enjoyed the vibes of this place, felt like a little house. There's little to no choices in fine dining in Aptos, so when I saw this place, I thought, let's try it. The menu is small, and from what I can gather from other reviews it doesn't change much. There was very little that sounded appealing, so I was hoping there would be a fresh sheet or something special outside the basic menu, especially for a summer weekend. Nope. I had the fish - see pic below. It was certainly good, potatoes were very undercooked, I could barely cut them. Seasoning was pretty sparse and overall the menu was so-so. For a $40 entree I expected a bit more wow in the taste... I wanted to try an appetizer or a salad/soup, but there were zero options without dairy...everything was covered in cheese. My mother had the steak with Gorgonzola - it came sliced. She said it was good, but, serving a $50 steak already sliced smothered in sauce reminds me of eating at Olive Garden. There needs to be more competition in the fine dining category in this neighborhood. read more

PerHow do I even start this review? It was so amazing we couldn't believe it. From the moment we walked in the door of the cozy dining room, being greeted warmly, seated immediately next to the window and treated as very special. Michael who welcomed us in and was also at our server could not have been more attentive. He advised us on appetizers, main courses, even dessert, as well as the wine. The budino appetizer with the cheese custard and spaghetti squash curls was amazing. The focaccia bread alongside was also wonderful. The local wine from Silver Mountain was the red blend "Alloy", an older 2013 bottle, expertly decanted by Michael and reasonable at $60. We will look up the winery and go to their tasting room over on the west side sometime soon. My wife enjoyed the Chanterelle and Ranch Egg Risottowith leeks, and pancetta, topped with a poached egg. I opted for the chicken saltimbocca, which was unusual for me. But it was amazing and had so much flavor--chicken stuffed with ricotta and sage, accompanied by farro, romanesco, provolone-mornay, black trumpet mushrooms and fried prosciutto. Outstanding! For dessert we had the Hazelnut semifreddo. It was perfect. We paired it with a glass of Silver Mountain "port" that Michael graciously poured into 2 glasses. We weren't looking for fine dining but ended up at Persephone cause no other places around has seats or they were loud! And so good that we ended up going there. It's a cute little restaurant with lots of windows overlooking the greenery. Go when it's light out so you can enjoy the view. The food and service were great. Pandemic be darned. This restaurant has adapted very well to outdoor dining. They have all the appropriate safety measures in place including appropriate social distancing between tables. Even in this very difficult time, they still have smiles in their eye and happy that you're there. Once again we had a fabulous dinner. As usual we started out with some bubbles from their extensive and well chosen wine list. My wife had the mixed green salad which was Incredibly fresh as a starter. I had the watermelon gazpacho which was perfect on a warm summer day. It had many little hidden surprises right down to the fresh basil to top as well as the burrata cheese. For the main courses we had two pasta dishes...I had the pappardelle with a Bolognese a sauce and my wife had the Truffled Cheese Tortiglioni. However tempted, we didn't lick our plates. Both of these were just outstanding dishes. For a finishing touch we shared the Strawberry Buttermilk Panna Cotta. Tremendous! As a sidenote, Alexander is not only one of the co-owners but also the sommelier. They have an extensive and very well-balanced wine list which rivals anything you would see in San Francisco. We are so fortunate to have a restaurant of this quality within walking distance of our house. Alexander and Chef Cori treat you to some amazing wines and dishes with great hospitality in a lovely setting. I found this place in a search of restaurants in Aptos. My inlaws live there and the family owns a Condo in the area in Capitola on the other side of the freeway. We always go to Shadowbrook and I wanted to find something other than Shadowbrook as we always go there and we are very well familiar with that wonderful place already so when I found Persephone and saw it was fine dining, I thought perfect, we need to check this one out. My first reservation was for inside. And when we got to Capitola the night before, we were not sure we were gonna make it so I had cancelled. then after deciding we were gonna stay, I rescheduled and we ended up getting outside seating for 6:45. Upon arriving, late of course, we still managed to get our seating. It wasn't busy on the outside patio. There was another couple there and then it was my partner and I. We were sat and our server came up and introduced himself. He gave us the wine list and our menus. Said he'd come back for our orders for drinks. I ordered a Wine and my partner a beer. I also asked for Tea as well. after he walked away, we looked at the menu, which is not very large. Appetizers are great looking, but we were thinking well for 7$ which is the cheapest item on the menu period we thought that it looked good. It was a Facaccia bread served with hummus and oil. We thought oh we will get that. But upon the return of our server he had brought us that very item. I thought OH ok, so you don' have to order it they just bring it to you. But the little plates they serve the hummus and oil on are not big at all. And you run out fast. We had asked for more and the server just brought us the bread and not the hummus or the oil. He took our order and then walked off. We never got water. or asked if we had any questions on the menu at all. We had to finally ask for water. So they brought us a bottle. My partner had finished his beer and for a while before food came out we didn't see our server at all. Until food came out. No return in between to check to see if we needed another drink etc. The patio is a nice little side section. But the thing I noticed is the vines to the tree's over the side hill were over growing on the fence and over the side tables which were all empty cause of rain. But still no trimming. There were speakers up above the ceiling, but no music playing so we had the entertainment of the traffic off the road. It was rather quiet in the sense of no one was really outside but two couples us and the other couple. Then when they left, it was just us. Back to the food, the food was amazing. I had the Serloin and my partner the short rib dish. Neither dish disappointed. They were amazing. Flavors were all on target. The wine my partner had asked for was brought out to him before getting our dish. At that time we had to ask for water for our glasses that sat empty the entire 30 minutes being there. It was at least a good 10 minutes before the server came back out to check on us. I didn't mention that when I got my dish, they didn't provide me with a steak knife nor my partner. I was using my butter knife to cut my meat. Then the server came out and noticed and apologized and ran and got me a steak knife. After the meal, we sat and discussed how amazing the food was and waited for the servers to come get our dirty dishes. Then the host came out and gathered, the server came behind and asked if we wanted dessert. I thought we are in this so yes, I want to try the dessert. I had the brownie ala mode and my partner got the Panna Cotta with Kumquats, Olallieberry and chocolate. again both dishes gave a great presentation. Both delish and we were very happy with our choices. Over all, food is by far amazing and worth the visit. I fell that the service lacked in a big way though cause although we were the only one's that ended up out on the side patio, it was like people forgot about us. We had long delays before we got service and our server. when they brought out our dessert, I had also asked for our check. Which I'm glad I did cause NO ONE came out after we were done with our meal. They came to collect our plates but no one came back for the check to pay. I had to literally get up and go in and pay. One server came up and looked at me and says "OH you are the couple outside" with a big smile. Like it was funny cause we were the ONLY ONE's out there. The server finally walked up and cashed me out and thanked us for dining with them. I felt that this was sort of the rudest part of the night. No one apologized for any inconvenience of that part of the service experience. As a Chef that has worked in restaurants and fine dining, your clientele is very important and if you have them sitting out on a patio or side patio, then those guests should be a high priority as they are not getting the inside experience. I have been holding off on this review for selfish reasons. This is place is such a gem I kind of wanted to keep it a secret. It is on the small side but light and airy within with bright original artwork by the owners wife. The far side overlooks the gorgeously wooded Nisene marks state park. The overall feel is elegant but comfortable. It is lovely but not loud with jazz music. The food is Michelin star worthy. The menu is based on locally sourced produce and meat. It changes based upon what is available. The portions are good sized but not huge and the presentation is artful. Try not to miss the cheese plate. They had everything from an aged Sardinian to an English triple cream. The menu selection covers all the bases without excess. They do not overlook dessert. Particularly good is the salted brownie. The servers are genuine and on top of their game. You can see into the kitchen as you enter and they seek to be having fun back there. Finally the wine list has lots of local options and some from afar all selected carefully and with a range of price. Possibly the best dinner I've had in Santa Cruz county. The entrees (we tried the dry aged steak and the chicken with olallieberry) were perfectly done, with each element (like king trumpets and creamed leeks) making a delicious impression of their own. The desserts (panna cotta and an amazing meringue) kept up the same level. I feel like this is the first time I've fully realized what meringue can be. Our waiter was charming and excellent, went out of his way to make sure we were enjoying our time there. We stopped by the beach for a sunset and afterwards, I looked for a nearby organic restaurant when I found Persephone. Seeing that I love Greek mythology, I made the reservation. I am currently disabled on a knee scooter, and I felt grateful for close parking, ramp, and even handicap friendly restroom. I didn't have to jump any curves so definitely a plus. We went in for early dinner so we were the first patrons. We ordered the burrata appetizer. The burrata melted in my mouth. The quince had a very fall flavor with enough sweetness (I don't do well with excessive sweet). I also shared the soup - I already forgot the name. They had a number of soups that they offered which was really great for a cold evening. I'm always looking for restaurants that served homemade soups, and they offered more than just soup of the day. How awesome is that! My main was local catch in papillote and their local catch was halibut, one of my favorite fish. I found the fish overcooked which was disappointing and the reason I docked the star. I think it may be because farro inside was taking up all the moisture from the fish. The farro was great. The fudge brownie with strawberry ice cream was pretty good. Everything tasted homemade with quality ingredients. The decaf French press coffee was ample and tasty to go along with a sweet dessert. My husband thought everything was overpriced, but I think it's worth paying for nice ambiance, attentive service, and quality ingredients. I just my wish was more moist. It could've been 5 stars!
