My 13 year old Labrador Retriever "Dixon" went to the Rainbow Bridge today with the help of Dr. Phil Whisnand. I wish I could rate this man 10 stars! I could not have asked for a more loving and gentle ending for my boys life. I got to lay down beside him as the doctor performed his magic and listen to his heart beat and breathing slowly stop. It feels like my heart will never heal, however I know it will because it was such a beautiful procedure and that will help greatly. It is ALL because of Dr. Whisnand! I have owned four Labrador Retrievers. Dixon was my fourth. All have had to be euthanized either due to old age, inoperable tumors and diabetes. Each experience was horrible. Cold office, bright lights, noise, people talking, unfamiliar surroundings etc. I will NEVER consider another option other than an in-home procedure. I have NEVER met a more compassionate, gentle and loving veterinarian than Dr. Whisnand. If you are looking for the best ending for your beloved fur baby - you can stop searching. Dr. Whisnand is your doctor. He is busy and doesn't have an assistant SO BE PATIENT if possible. He WILL get back to you. DON'T panic - rather make a plan in advance if possible. Costs vary by the size/weight of your baby (for the cost of the euthanasia and cremation if not a home burial) and what package you want from the crematorium. Dr. Whisnand pays for the cremation from what you pay him. There are NO hidden fees. What his web site indicates is exactly what you will pay absent the weight of your baby. I wasn't sure if it was Dixon's time. I would have regretted this decision for the rest of my life if I had not known. I just didn't know what to do and didn't have a lot of money. While Dr. Whisnand could have proceeded with the euthanasia - if all that mattered to him was money (like MOST veterinarians) - but he didn't. He asked me if my boy had been diagnosed. He hadn't. I just "felt" it was time. His breathing was labored and he had unclear x-rays (indicating something wrong with his big beautiful heart). I begged, borrowed and just about stole the money to confirm the diagnosis which turned out to be a cancerous mass on his heart. His condition was terminal. I made the right decision and will be at peace only due to Dr. Whisnand's recommendation. Thank you Sir for everything you do. read more

There are no words to describe how heartbreaking it is to say good-bye to an animal. The process from beginning to end is horrible. Everything about it it is horrible. In January 2020 I adopted "Bubba." A senior lab/boxer mix that was dumped at the vet by his owner who never came back to get him. He was rescued by the North Myrtle Beach Humane Society who knew his life was worth saving. I took one look at his sad face and took him home the same day. After a few months he was diagnosed with cancer. I told him I wouldn't let him suffer. The vet stated I would most likely lose him within six months. Two years later Bubba told me it was time. My friend told me about Dr. Phil and how wonderful he was. I called him and made the awful appointment. My little Rhino was at the end. I didn't want to take him to our vet. I love our vet but I wanted my dog to be stress free. He is happy and calm at home. I called Dr. Phil. Dr Phil was amazing. 10/10 experience. The process of putting a dog down that you love is extremely difficult, but after talking with Dr Phil about the process and what to expect, I felt comfortable moving forward. This is the first time I've ever been in any situation like this. My boxer, Livy, was 10 years old and in terrible shape. With his help, I was able to put her to rest in the comfort of her own bed here at home. He was very respectful, helpful, compassionate, and empathetic during this awful time. I would highly recommend to anyone during this difficult time. No doubt one of the toughest reviews I've ever written. Recently euthanized a kitty I had for over twelve years. I'd known all along about in-home euthanasia services, and promised myself we'd end our friendship that way if at all possible. I'd first researched "Pet Loss at Home" back in January - when my girlfriend's kitty became very ill. Unfortunately, "Marlie" never made it home from the emergency vet, but I recall my conversation with Dr. Whisnand as I gathered more information about his services. His demeanor and understanding - even over the phone - made him our first phone call when our "Grey Rei" told us it was time. I echo the sentiments shared by all the others facing this painful decision. Dr. Whisnand was indeed heaven sent. My beautiful Big Boy's cognitive & physical health had been declining for sometime. Struggling with the decision was excruciating but I had resolved when it was time he would go at home in the house that rescued him from being chained to a tree, on his favorite bed, surrounded by calm, family, love and compassion. After my large, 13+ year old dog, Gwen suffered a second stroke, I took her to my vet - which was difficult (physically and emotionally). We returned home, hoping for the best, but it was not to be. When my 13-year-old Sheltie Tobie became terminally ill with cancer, and we had done everything we could with treatments, I wanted to be sure his final moments were familiar, peaceful, and loving. I was terrified about using Pet Loss At Home as I didn't know much about the service and my usual at-home vet was unavailable. When I called on the phone, Dr. Whisnand didn't seem personable but Tobie was out of time and I had no other options. I didn't want Tobie to be given a shot and be gone on the spot. I wanted him to be comfortable, sedated and gently rest while I had a chance to say goodbye before the final injection. I contacted Pet Loss At Home via email I believe, and Dr. Phil Whisnand promptly replied to my message and called me to confirm the appointment I had to make for my dog Toby. I had been dreading the day that I would have to make this appointment but I knew it was coming. Toby had been on hospice care and living comfortably for the most part but he was on a lot of pain medications. He suddenly got worse and it was right before a holiday weekend. I had called around a few places, hoping someone could be available on a Friday evening with one day notice, because I wanted for my parents to be there with me through this process, but like a lot of people do, my parents had to work during the week and during the day. I am beyond thankful Dr Whisnand was able to be available before the weekend although it was in the morning on that Friday, rather than the evening. Toby was getting to the point that he was probably not going to be able to walk and I couldn't make him suffer through the weekend. It was either the next day In the morning, or with Toby's vet at their office. Tobys veterinarian had recommended Pet Loss At Home, or at their office which she had reassured me would be a good alternative. Even she had euthanized her own pets that way, at the vet clinic, and it would have been a good choice if I was concerned about the cost. I chose Dr. Whisnand's morning appointment at home instead because I know how scared Toby would get as soon as he realized he was at the vet clinic and I preferred that he be in an environment that he would be comfortable the most in. I didn't want Toby to be scared during this process. Dr. Whisnand was prompt the day of, compassionate and respectful, and allowed us to take our time saying goodbyes to Toby. Payment was due in full that morning but I was already aware of the details and that it would be due at time of service. Dr. Whisnand did not bring up money and respected my time to grieve before and after the euthanasia process. Toby was surrounded by all the people that he was loved by and Dr. Whisnand made this process a beautiful and peaceful one for us all. He said a prayer for Toby at the end, which meant a lot to me. I received Toby's cremations in a beautiful box with his name engraved on it from All Paws Crematory, hand delivered to my door with a card from them and another from Pet Loss At Home. Also with it was Toby's pressed paw print from Paws of Remembrance in a case that opened, and next to it was the Rainbow Bridge poem. I would not choose to do it any other way.
