I've had the misfortune of saying goodbye to two other dogs prior to using Pet Passages. They made this difficult experience so comforting. My beautiful cat died unexpectedly a couple of weeks ago, late in the evening at home. I spent the wee hours researching the various pet crematories within driving distance, and Pet Passages had the best website with the clearest descriptions of services and costs, as well as the most reasonable prices. There were other companies that offered the exact same type of "package" for over twice as much as we paid at Pet Passages. The website said they opened at 9:00am and I called them at 8:55am. I have never lost a pet before and because we weren't using a vet, I was unsure of how things proceeded, on top of being distracted by my broken heart. The staff who answered my call were sympathetic, kind, and assured me we could come in as soon as we'd like. When we hung up, my husband and I got in the car with our girl's body wrapped in her favorite blanket and nestled in a basket, and drove to their office on 104. Candy greeted us warmly in a spacious, comfortable room when we walked through the door. She kindly and slowly explained where I could lay the body (in a nice, low-light, private room with a sizable area to lay her down and furniture for us to sit, should we want to), and where we should sit to review the services. My husband and I were both physically and emotionally exhausted and just wanted to get out of there. Candy repeated information that I didn't hear the first time she said it, and in no way made me feel condescended to at all. I felt like she really cared about our enormous loss and trusted that she would take good care of my girl. She walked us through the main options and additional possibilities. We wanted a fairly basic package, and I dreaded the inevitable up-sell of memorial items - when I thanked her for showing us the selection (a very nice selection, to be sure) and said we weren't interested at this time, she didn't put any pressure whatsoever on us, and moved onto the next item of business. I felt relieved and grateful. The paperwork part of things was brief and straightforward, and Candy explained the process to us and answered our questions with empathy and understanding. When we concluded, she invited us to stay if we wished, to say goodbye to our kitty, or to have coffee and clear our heads. My husband wanted to go home immediately, so I went back into the private room to touch her beautiful fur one last time, and we left. I felt in my heart that she'd be cared for and treated with dignity. In the subsequent hours, I couldn't focus on anything other than the cremation process and I felt uneasy without her remains close by. Candy and the other staff took my follow-up phone calls with compassion and patience, and I picked her remains up the following morning. I didn't have the words then to adequately express my appreciation for how they'd all made this as easy as it could be, but I hope this review does that now. We have other pets, and will ultimately be using Pet Passages' services again at some point. While I don't look forward to that day for obvious reasons, I know that I won't have to worry about anything other than my own grief, because Pet Passages will take care of our family. I wish funeral homes that service humans were as compassionate, professional, and thoughtful as Pet Passages and their staff. There are no words to express our gratitude to Pet Passages in Ontario for their care, kindness, professionalism, compassion and empathy while helping us to send our beloved cat Miss Rachael Button home to God on October 23. When we lost our sweet 20 year old Bernice in July, their compassion was truly comforting. Our little Rachael battled a debilitating illness for many months, for which there would be no cure, just comfort care. My husband and I had previously decided that when it was time, we would request her euthanasia to be performed at Pet Passages and it was the best decision we could have possibly made. I left a tearful and desperate voice mail message with Pet Passages late Thursday evening. On Friday morning I received a phone call from Brian, even before their normal business hours. He was wonderful - kind, patient with my tears and grief, and so understanding. He explained that they work with Heart of Gold Veterinary Care, a mobile veterinary service that comes in by appointment to help pets cross over. Brian made all of the arrangements with the vet; we didn't have to do anything. I know he sensed the urgency of the situation, and our breaking hearts, and he was able to schedule an appointment for us at 10:30 a.m. that morning. When we arrived at Pet Passages, Andrea had set up one of their lovely private rooms where Dr. Jessica Gulvin would be meeting us. The room was quiet and softly lit and we placed Miss Button on the big padded bed. When Dr. Jessica and her assistant came in they were so supportive and understanding. The doctor is extremely competent, professional, deeply compassionate and empathetic. As I held her head, Miss Button crossed over into God's hands peacefully and instantly. Dr. Jessica took a little silk flower out of her bag, placed it next to Rachael's head and said a quiet good-bye to us. Pet Passages' Andrea and Brian encouraged us to spend as much time with Rachael as we wanted. They never rush you there; they want your last time with your pet to be tranquil and beautiful as you begin the long process of healing. Everyone there truly understands your grief and sense of loss. Miss Rachael Button came home on, October 26. Pet Passages placed her ashes in a beautiful velvet bag inscribed with the words "Until we meet again at the Rainbow Bridge" which was put into an exquisite, polished wooden box urn engraved with her name. We are so appreciative and grateful that we found Pet Passages in Ontario, NY. From the first call to them to picking up our Lilah's cremains was handled with love, compassion, dignity and respect - not just for us, but much more importantly for Lilah. Andrea and Mike were so caring and kind. I also want to mention and thank Brian who helped transport Lilah from the car to the private viewing room and was extremely caring and gentle with her. They are pet lovers themselves and it shows in everything they do. They never rushed us and let us spend as much time in our last moments with her as we wanted. The facility is beautiful and peaceful as well as being very professional and proficient. They have a tracking system to ensure you receive your pet's cremains, which they completed and had her back to us with a couple of days. Having the option to get a clay imprint of her paw as well as the other special touches they provide - nose and paw prints - was priceless to us. When I picked her up, I decided to purchase an urn, and have it engraved - which they do right on site and only took a few minutes. I am so glad I did. It is beautiful. Dealing directly with Pet Passages showed us that there is an invaluable service for our four-legged family members that can help you through a difficult time in such a caring, dignified and compassionate way. I understand that not everyone is still wearing a mask these days, but when a client asks I don't think it's unreasonable to put one on for the 15 minutes you'll be interacting with them. You don't know what everyone's reasons are for being cautious - maybe they are immunocompromised, maybe they have an elderly loved one they take care of, or maybe - like myself - they work with unvaccinated children.
