the living conditions they have their animals in are deplorable. i wouldn't support this business at all. their fish all look extremely sick. they're keeping their betta fish with tank mates that are biting their fins and stressing them out. one being a rainbow shark?!? even if you buy a fish from here it WILL DIE. they have "packages" with their birds, hampsters, and fish that all are not even bare minimum. they are exploiting animals for a quick cash grab and it's disgusting. really disappointing for a local store that's supposed to be "better" than big box stores. :/ read more

Been doing business with this man for several years as we always try to support local Ma and Pop shops. WILL NEVER DO BUSINESS HERE AGAIN!!! We bought a couple of fish from him just before Christmas, since our nephew really likes the aquarium. After several days our fish started dying one by one. We went to him for a solution and had him test the water from our tank. Water looked fine but he told us we had a parasitic infestation (Ich). After we told him all our fish seemed to be infected he SOLD us a $6 bottle of anti- Ich solution and told us it was our fault that our tank was infested due to the water temperature being slightly too low (~75-76 degrees instead of 80). WHAT B.S.!!!!! We've had a fish tank for 29 years and never had an issue like this. 11 fish dead so far, including a big Plecco that we're had for 7 YEARS and a couple of Black Skirts we're had for 4 to 5 years. His fish infected our tank and killed every one of our collection and he tells us IT"S OUR FAULT!!! This is REPREHENSIBLE!!! Avoid this business at all costs!!! read more

My friend and I were super excited to fill our new 40gal fish tank. The lady working in fish area is very knowledgeable but talked at us for over an hour telling us things we never asked about (like what her fish tank at home is like). We did ask a few questions, ensuring that certain fish would be able to coexist, but we didn't ask for every fishes life history. She is clearly passionate but couldn't read social cues as we were extremely done being talked to. We had already told her what fish we wanted and she just talked for ages before actually getting them out of the tank. What should've been a 30 min max trip took 1.5 hours. She didn't even stop to take a breath of air. I didn't want to be rude but she drove me absolutely insane haha read more

Drove about an hour and 45 minutes looking from pet store to pet store for knowledgeable bird staff and we didn't find any until we got to Lakewood pet world. The young lady that helped us was very knowledgeable a knowledgeable and how does pick the right birds for our family we got 2 of them not sure of their names yet but we will definitely be going back is he going back great prices also. read more

We started going to Pet World when we moved to Lakewood five years ago and I'm SO GLAD to have a neighborhood pet store. Gary and the rest of the staff are super accommodating - they've helped us find products for our dogs' fussy tummies, chewing habits, fear of thunder & noise... you name it. They were kind enough to special order a giant crate for us with a door on the side, because an end-door didn't work in our house. We particularly like that we can mix-and-match canned food and get a discount (and love getting a free bag on our twelfth bag!) And I appreciate that they always seem interested in feedback on toys (we have an aggressive chewer!) Just a great place to shop for our pets! read more

I pass this store nearly every day so when I rescued a miniature Schnauzer mix, I decided to stop in with my new companion. The rescue coordinator, who resides in Littleton, recommended them claiming that they help her with her rescue efforts. There are just a few parking spaces in front of the store which indicates that the store is very small. Looks can be deceiving. Most of the dog food and pet supplies are in the front and then, the aviary and fish tanks are in the rear which is not noticeable when you pass by. The staff members are friendly and helpful, they know their pets and pet supplies very well. I left with a dog tag, harness, treats and dog food, while a staff member was making the dog tag, her sister gave me a sample bag of treats for my dog. Since I recently moved to Lakewood and am a new dog owner, I asked for their recommendation for a local groomer and veterinarian, they were eager to share their experiences with both a groomer and vet. It's great to have a place like this so close to home, I try to support local small businesses as often as I can. read more

My bf and I came here to pick out a beta and at first when we walked in it was a bit overwhelming with the amount of products they had available, but I am glad they had options for everything you needed to buy. In the front is mainly all the products and different foods available. As you meander to the back is where all the fish at birds are. At first we only saw one beta in a little small secluded container and became a little disappointed. However, once we got one of the associates to help us she pointed out they were spread around in different aquariums and I saw a few different ones swimming around freely. I am so glad I decided to go to a local store rather than a chain because the fish here looked a lot better taken care of and had more space to swim. Their prices may be a little higher, but I really enjoy giving more to local stores than big chains. I recommend coming here for small little things you may need for your pets. We were happy with our purchase and our beta is gorgeous and happily swimming at home now. read more

It's ok. They don't have all of the pet food choices we like for our pets, but they do a pretty good job of keeping a lot of options on the shelf. They have some rescue animals for adoption which is better than going to a puppy mill, so I'll give them points for that. However we were looking for a hampster for our daughter and one of the animals seemed a sick and very scratchy, so I'm not sure they are taking the best care of the little animals, however the cages did look clean. read more

Pet World is a great place to shop, or just to visit if you're in the area and check out the bumper crop of adorable handfed parrots that is always located in the back room. Pet World is rarely terribly busy, so employees are happy to allow you to visit with the birds, provided that you use instant hand sanitizer first and treat them with respect. I love going in to see the resident Blue and Gold Macaw, named Baby, who is over twenty years old and croaks, "Papa," to indicate that he likes someone's company, or, "Wheeeee!" to ask to be swung around in the air. If you can tear yourself away from the baby birdies, there's a nice saltwater fish section, and behind the counter is a huge saltwater tank belonging to the owner, Gary, and his wife; inside you'll find Squishy, the huge Porcupine Pufferfish who was fed by hand by his first owner until he got big enough to try taking her fingers, too! If you're there at the right time of evening, you might see fish feeding time. That's always a blast, with the big moray eel, lionfish, puffer, and grouper fighting for the choicest tidbits- nobody ever gets hurt, but they display and lunge at each other to beat the band. As for the merchandise- small animal offerings are slim pickings, but for cats and dogs, you'll find a wide selection of super premium foods. The staff is more than happy to grade your current pet food on a scale that focuses on ingredients, and recommend a better diet if your brand gets a failing grade. Dog food has a buy 12 get the 13th free offer built in if you sign up for a Pet World card, which, if you spend enough, earns you store credit rebates yearly. Bird and fish supplies are also available, and the employees are very knowledgeable on that subject as well. read more

This place is overpriced and the staff often come off as know-it-alls who harbor a near militant hate for the big chain stores. Often the prices marked on the rack are not the same as the price they ring up at the counter. It's always off by enough to be annoying but not enough to make a big fuss about because you don't know until after they've run your card and hand you the receipt. They offer quality products but the con's are enough that I wont ever go back again. read more

I have been going to this store for years and years, so I can't believe I haven't written a review until now! Pet World is just awesome. I only have dogs, so my review will be about my experience with dog related products, and employee advice. I have had multiple dogs all of my life, and have worked/volunteered at several rescues and shelters. Pet World carries only the finest of products. All are organic, nutritious, and top of the line. You may pay a bit more because of this, but it is well worth it because my dogs have always been so healthy, and have lived long lives. Pet World also carries all natural supplements, treats, accessories, and sound advice!! I know that the owner (Gary) is always "in the know" about what is best for each specific dog, and any issues they are experiencing. Also, I LOVE talking things over with Kelly (who has been there for years) because she is so intelligent and knowledgeable about all the products they carry. She goes to pet seminars often, so she is very informed about anything my dogs may need. That said, no one tries to talk you into buying anything you may not need. The owner/employees are there to help and advise when asked. I've lived in several parts of the Denver area over the years, but I always buy my dog products from Pet World. We brought our grandchildren to this store to pick out fish for our new aquarium. They were very excited. The owner of the store could not have been more rude! She talked to us as if we never bought fish before and was the most condescending person I've met in a long time. We would have walked out but the kids were too excited to get our fish now! I started shopping at Pet World after I decided I wasn't comfortable shopping at Petsmart anymore. I buy rabbit litter and food here regularly, and the prices are very competitive. They also have a nice, knowledgeable staff, which is something that is definitely missing from larger pet stores. I do wish they would carry more items to bring home for my bunnies, but I'm willing to keep shopping there until they do so. read more

Very helpful. They have most things the large corporations have if not more selection and better quality. They are better educated on a large array from birds to dogs to high tech aquarium setups. Very clean and bright tanks with a nice selection of salt and freshwater fish. We wanted to buy a few fish in Denver but live in Salida so we were worried they wouldn't make it. Kelly went above and beyond to bag our fish with enough oxygen and found a Styrofoam box for us to keep the temperature even. Gave us TONS of tips on our new tank and today they are all alive and doing great in our tank. She knows a LOT about fish and I felt confident taking the chance. Found it a little strange that they wouldn't sell us some fish because they were "new" (something about having to quarantine the fish for a week). We came back a week later when the fish were "ready" and had "just had their last round of meds." I guess it's for the best? Happened to move into the neighborhood recently and wanted to switch up dog food. When I walked in I was hoping to find at least one brand of grain free healthy dog food. Never bought the major brands as they didn't agree with my dog. Wow! I was floored with how many healthy dog food brands they have! I was able to pick the absolute best food for my cattle dog/ lab mix. She's loving the food and it's at a great price! When I was a little concerned about how she was adjusting to the food, I talked to the owner and he gave some great advice and it fixed my problem. She's now regular and full of energy. I stopped by their boardroom and met some of the residents. What a quaint little pet store. I love this place and am going to be a regular customer from now on. Great job Pet World! This place really knows their products and their animals. They only carry high quality food and pet stuff, right down to the dog treats. They have competitive pricing but only tend to carry boutique brands who have more personalized quality. The selection of brands is diverse including Orijen, Evo, and Taste of the Wild. My parents and their friend/co-owner of their dog only shops there as well, and I recommend it to everyone I meet with a dog. For a small business the selection is quite broad, especially treats and toys. And the best part is it's right in my neighborhood. read more

I found pet world to be a refreshingly, surprisingly delightful place. Here, pets aren't commodities, they are friends who deserve love and care. I got two hamsters there Friday, the 11th of November. They are healthy and tame and obviously well cared for. It shows. The store personnel even cared enough to ask questions to make sure that I know how to care properly for them (I've had hamsters for decades) and suggested I buy some of their custom made seed mix, which the hamsters have gotten used to at the store. It's an excellent mix - so good I actually went to a feed and grain store near where I live to have it replicated in bulk. The store is clean and attractive. The staff person who served me was caring and helpful. And they care about their hamsters, which is the most important thing to me. All pet stores should be like this one! read more
