On June 15, 2026, I took my 45-pound mini Goldendoodle, Piper, to PetCo at 95 Flowers Commerce Dr., Clayton, NC 27527. This was her first grooming appointment with PetCo. The appointment was scheduled from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. After walking to the check-in area and waiting for the customer ahead of me to complete his business, a woman wearing a grooming apron came out from the back. She had apparently seen me enter through the glass windows. She did not introduce herself or review Piper's appointment, she immediately began feeling my dog's coat and stated that she might not be able to groom her because she was matted. I acknowledged that Piper had some matting and began feeling her coat myself. The woman then stated that Piper was "over 75% matted" and that PetCo could not groom dogs that were that matted. I disagreed and replied that Piper was nowhere near 75% matted and certainly not even 50% matted. I then asked if she was my groomer, and she said she was not. Despite not being the groomer assigned to Piper, she again stated that PetCo would not be able to groom my dog. At that point, I told her I felt PetCo was being ridiculous and that I would simply take Piper back to her regular groomer, whom she has seen for the past three years, even though that groomer is located about 30 minutes away. The reason I scheduled with PetCo was convenience, as it is much closer to my home. What bothered me most was that someone who was not my dog's groomer appeared to make an immediate judgment about whether the appointment could proceed. I also found the interaction unusual because, when I originally scheduled the appointment, I was asked about Piper's breed and weight. After I explained that she is a mini Goldendoodle weighing approximately 45 pounds, the employee remarked, "That's not a mini." I replied that she is, in fact, a mini Goldendoodle. She seemed concerned about Piper's size at that time as well. The appointment was booked as "Piper's FS Long Hair Med Bath & Haircut Premium." Piper is three years old and has been groomed regularly throughout her life by the same groomer. In those three years, we have never been told that she was too matted to groom, nor has an appointment ever been refused because of the condition of her coat. While I understand that some matting may require additional work, special handling, or additional fees, this was the first time I had ever been told that my dog could not be groomed at all. In my view, if a dog's coat requires additional work because of matting, that should be discussed as part of the grooming appointment. If PetCo has grooming policies regarding matting, coat condition, breed, size, or any other factor that could prevent an appointment from being completed, those questions should be asked during the scheduling process. Groomers are the professionals and know what information they need to determine whether they can accommodate a dog. I was asked Piper's breed and weight when I made the appointment, and PetCo had every opportunity to ask additional questions at that time. I cannot say whether size, coat type, staffing limitations, or company policy played a role in this experience. I can only say that I left feeling disappointed. Piper has been successfully groomed by the same professional groomer for the past three years without issue, which is why I was surprised by how quickly this appointment was dismissed. For what it's worth, I routinely pay approximately $90 for a full-service grooming appointment and tip my groomer an additional $30 at every visit. Have a larger hairy dog? PetCo might not be the place for you. read more

I bought a Dwarf Hamster on June 9 for my granddaughter 13th birthday, first pet. Along with a small cage , a saucer running wheel, bedding, treats , food and a carry case 170.00 $ later to make a good life for our little hamster.. we arrived home and proceeded to assemble small cage . I started researching for the best location for our little girl . I was appalled at what I was finding on hamster sites about all my petco purchases.. Alll products from treats, running saucer down to the tiny cage that was sold to me all worthless and harmful for our little girl. I got on chewy site ordered all the right products and a proper cage for a hamster.. We told our hamster every day she was getting a new dwelling and proper exercise equipment soon and finally the day her dwelling arrived she passed away. 7 days from purchase . we were hurt and scrambling to find out why and what we did wrong . to find out Box stores like petco inbreed their animals to mass produce and our little hamster didn't have a chance to have any sort of of a normal life . she was doomed from day one. the heart wrenching way their inbreeding these poor animals should be outlawed. I certainly take responsibility for my lack of knowledge, but as a company who have these animals should be responsible and educate buyers for the sake of their animals.. I had 2 back-to-back appointments at the Vetco Vaccine Clinic in Clayton, NC on Saturday 12/13 for my 2 cats to update their vaccines. My cats are 4 year old siblings born on the same day to the same mother. Their last vaccines were 3 years ago. For some reason the 1st cat received the appropriate 3-year vaccines, but the 2nd cat received only 1-year vaccines. I didn't realize what they had done until they emailed me the records. I have tried calling the main number for Vetco and was told that I would have to contact the vet James Trybus, but that they also don't give out contact information. So I have no way to contact the vet and resolve this issue. How are these licensed vets when you can't even contact them or follow up with them? read more

This Petco is by my house so it is convenient for me to go there for my cat's needs. Today I stopped by for cat food and litter. I passed two employees that were stocking shelves and not one said hello or if I needed assistance. Also, the store looked dirty. The front check out counter also could use a wipe down. That's literally disgusting to me to intentionally put an animal under stress like that. Two other employees were watching too - I honestly don't understand this. Please re-educate your team on proper animal handling and professionalism. I won't be back to your store. Unlike my most recent appointment, the first visit in Feb was great. They were friendly, helpful, did a good job and did it quickly. The second visit was a DISASTER. I ordered the same services as the first time, but the bill was $12.99 more! They charged for a Brush-out and shave (whatever that is) and they charged a MATERIALS fee! Neither extra charge was on the first bill. It's been a couple weeks since I complained about it, but all I've received is an email suggesting, "Next time you're in the store, feel free to ask for me." It didn't say what position she had at the store or WHY I should contact her, so I asked in my reply. I haven't heard back. One other thing, a groomer was on the phone apologizing up and down to someone and offering to pay the vet bill out of her own pocket. Bottom line: PETCO can take their store and shave it! read more

We went there a few weeks back to get supplies for a new puppy. We also had ordered some things online again for 1 puppy. HOWEVER!!!! we came back with 2 on adoption day. Yay! for us. Soooo a lot of the supplies we got like a crate don't work for the extra 4 paws. Lol. So we had to return a handful of items and in the process of searching online we found some of the items were less when you bought them online. Karen and Jodie were awesome with handling all the returns, helping with their request for the new purchases and price matching their online prices. We had multiple receipts and questions and so very nice, efficient, professional and a joy to work with. It has won our future purchases. read more

Absolutely love this petco. They have a great clinic, trainers, groomers and it's always very clean. I took my dog to the clinic for his puppy shots and they treated him so well and they were very fast getting him in and out even though it was very busy. I 100% recommend this petco especially for the Vet and won't take my puppy anywhere else. Only downside is there vet is only open on Saturdays and Sundays. read more

Good place to get all of your pet needs. Groomers are a bit uncertain when it comes to some animals. Don't want to say what happened but trust me when I say use them with caution. Previously left a 5 Star because they were that good. Not so much anymore. My daughter stopped to pickup 2 bags of dog food. The bags were discounted, we thought because they were discontinuing this flavor. When she arrived, I immediately poured 1 of the bags into the food bin. Later that evening. I picked up the other bag to store. I noticed best by date was 2 months past. Then I checked the other bag and it expired last month. I do not mind buying food close to the exp date, but my wife will not use anything on, or past that date for our family. That is especially true of our fur babies. I thought that I could trust Petco, was glad to see they put a store close by. However, i am so disappointed by their actions. A couple of months ago, they offered a lot of treats at 50% off. I thought they were reducing inventory, or just having a big sale. All the products I used were made in America., so I felt good about what Petco was doing. Then 2 wks after I received my large order, they send a note that they are removing all of the treats that have additives. They were only going to offer treats good for our pets. Really? I just bought these treats, because I thought they were best for our littlest family members. Now, they have additives so Petco is removing from their shelves to put them on mine. Very, Very disappointed. I made the mistake of trusting that Petco had been looking after my pets, and they showed me that not only was I mistaken about that, but they did what they could to push their worst quality, or old product to their Customers. Petsmart is not much further, and I will be seeing more of them. read more
