With a lack of barbershops in Valpo, it's an absolute shame that people have to resort to this complete shithole. Funny story, this haircut was actually for free because a drunk guy came in and decided to pay for some little itty bitty kids' haircuts. Hopefully you can understand what kind of people this place attracts. If you'd take a look at the rest of the photos on Yelp, you'd see a common theme - this place is totally incapable of cutting hair in any way besides a skin fade. Attached is the haircut I got last week. I asked for something a LITTLE outside of their "comfort zone" and have been met with multiple remarks that I should buzz my hair, and that it's the only way to salvage how they left me. It's a busy place. Probably because it's a good place to get a haircut. They do not make appointments which is also a good thing. I also know that if I come in one hour before they close and there's eight people sitting in a chair. It would not be fair for me to think that I would get some kind of special privilege to be next in line. Even if I was actually going to a funeral. As another complained about in another review.That does not give a person a privilege in any way shape or form. I appreciate these people for what they can do in the few minutes that we are sitting in their chair. The skill level far exceeds many other barber shops. This place prides itself in not honoring hours and publicly insulting loyal customers. This is an update on a review I wrote in response to Pete's angry/hateful written response to the same said review here on Yelp. Original problem? I went to Pete's an hour before close one beautiful spring day. Pete had left ONE BARBER on duty. There were 12 people waiting for cuts. The barber in charge said "I'm sorry, we're closed." I said the store was open for another hour, as posted on the door. I also explained I was a pallbearer for a dear friend's funeral the next day. The barber repeated "I said we're closed." I responded she was TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL and left. Thinking mistakes happen, I returned to Pete's a month later, and waited for Pete -- who had cut my hair since one month after his shop opened. All he said during and after my 1/2 hour cut (which was good) was "if you insult my staff, you insult me." He made no inquiries as to what happened that day that I was turned away an hour before closing, made no apologies for he and his fellow barbers leaving one barber to run an entire shop on a beautiful spring day. Then treated me like dirt when I showed up to try and salvage (repair) what I thought was a good friendship with a man I had come to admire and respect. But there's more to this tale of how far Pete will go in his anger. One month later, Pete used another person's site to attack my one star review of his shop on Yelp, saying I: (a) rambled and made no sense (b) insulted his worker (after she insulted me) (c) failed to mention anything about my dear friend dying (whom I spoke with Pete about his dying of a terminal illness a number of different times when Pete was cutting my hair) -- the same man whose funeral I was in the day after I was turned away an hour before posted closing hours . . . (d) insulted me for showing off by using "big words" in my review (? ? ?) (e) insulted me for hiding behind a caricature that another friend who had recently died of cancer drew for me to use. "You even have to hide behind a cartoon rather than using your actual picture," Pete said smugly in his lengthy, insulting, and bordering on cruel response to my Yelp review. (Personally attacking a person for writing a Yelp review? I mean, who does that? ) PETE -- PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE POST THIS REVIEW IN YOUR SHOP TO SHOW HOW CRAZY A MAN WHO WAS TRYING TO LOOK GOOD FOR A DEAR FRIEND'S FUNERAL WAS FOR TRYING TO GET A HAIRCUT AT YOUR SHOP DURING POSTED BUSINESS HOURS. I totally admit it was my fault that you understaffed your shop, it was my fault that you LEFT early and opted not to return to your shop to help a worker in need, it was my fault that you got angry that I called the single employee you left in charge "unprofessional" for closing one hour early AND it was totally my fault that you insulted me again when I returned to your shop to try and mend bridges and salvage a friendship that I had sincerely come to value and support. It was all my fault, Pete. You were totally right in your treatment and concern . . . PLEASE POST THIS SO YOU CAN FEEL BETTER ABOUT YOUR PROFESSIONAL TREATMENT OF THAT JERK WHO MISTAKENLY TRUSTED YOUR BARBER SHOP TO HONOR HOURS OF OPERATION YOU HAD POSTED ON YOUR DOOR -- AND WHO CAME TO YOUR SHOP DURING AN ACTUAL HOUR OF NEED FOR HELP. You once were a man I admired for overcoming a very difficult life and making something of yourself. What happened to that person? When did you turn so judgmental and hateful? I honestly feel sorry for whatever it was in life that turned you into the person you've become. I know your business is successful. I'm happy for you. I think a lot of the people writing comments around here don't know what a good haircut is or they wouldn't be slandering these barbers. I've been to some of the best spots in California, New York, Chicago, etc etc. and I had a great experience as well as excellent precision and patience from the female barber they have, sorry I can't remember her name at the moment but she executed a med-high fade to zero, as well as faded into beard after a great lineup and trim. Didn't whine or complain when I had her go back to work on beard twice. She clearly knows what she's doing and did so without assistance (including straight razor on back of head/neck), in a timely manner. Maybe reevaluate your own style or personal issues before commenting something hateful on someone's place of business. Would highly recommend to friends/family alike. I took my 3 boys there for a haircut today and they like the guy barber so my one son was getting his haircut and the lady was ready for the next client so I kindly said I'm gonna wait for him because the boys want to go to Pete and she took the next customer then he was half way through cutting my sons hair and said very rudely " why do they want to wait and I said because they want you to cut it and he said "WHY" they don't even know me" at that point I thought I'm out after this but then he finished my sons hair and said "I'm not cutting the other 2 I will do only one because we have 2 other qualified barbers in here" so I said never mind and left. We have gone here before and seen the other man and the girl and they were always nice but Pete was a real piece of work and so very rude!! I definitely won't be back. read more

I have been to Pete's a few times in the past, with somewhat mixed feelings. My sons' haircuts were great. One of the male barbers (never got his name) wasn't outright rude before, but also made no effort at friendliness. Because of that, I didn't go back for a while, but when I couldn't get the boys in elsewhere, we went back, and tben had a female. She was fantastic!! Friendly, professional, and did a wonderful job. Today I went back. First, let me say we're in the middle of a pandemic, and there's a mask order, but none of the employees was wearing a mask. I understand that customers can't really wear one with their hair being cut, but employees can and should be wearing them. That's not my main gripe, however. Today when we went, we went in (it's a walk-in place) and the female who was so great before was busy, as was one of the male barbers. No problem. We sat down to wait. In walks the other male barber who had been sitting outside on the curb smoking, with another man. This man had NOT been outside with the smoking barber before - I saw the barber alone, seated on the curb when we went in. The barber proceeded to have the male customer sit down and started to cut his hair. We had been waiting for about 10-15 minutes by this point and were next up. I said, "Excuse me, is this by appointment or all walk ins?" He said that it was walk ins but that the guy had been outside with him. Now I knew this was a lie because I had seen him with my own eyes. I was like, ok, I can let that go, but im going to request the female. Then the customer he was with and he exchanged looks and literally laughed, like haha, we totally just lied about that. So I told my son to put the toys away, and that we were leaving. Instead of saying sorry and asking me to stay, he totally didn't care that they were going to lose business plus a tip. A kid's haircut there is $14, and I always tip $6, and it's 20 in cash, saving them the swipe fee. It would have been a win win for them, but he seemed to not care an iota that he was losing business. Not only have they lost this $20, but the next $20 and the one after that and so on. Between my sons and my husband, we spend about $100/month on haircuts. I certainly won't be spending that at Pete's again, ever. Their customer service has never been great (except for the female - I hope she finds a better shop to work at because she was the only reason I went back), which is sad. It has the potential to be a great home town place where you can go knowing you're keeping your money in the local economy. But I'd rather go to a national chain than go where they just don't care whether you stay or not. I hope the guy you took ahead of me gave you as good of a tip as I have. I showed the lady a picture of how I wanted it done and it was almost the exact opposite. I told her I wanted it long and she cut it to my hairline. Instruction on how to get your hair cut at Pete's: 1) Don't try to make appointments; 2) Wait patiently (If you try to rush them, it will just take longer); 3) Do not walk up to the hair chair before you are called; 4) You can request a cut from Pete, but beware denying a cut from Pete. I once heard of a young man who entered the shop after taking a short run. I would not advise trying that. I've been going to Pete for a while now, he does a great cut and he's a no-bullshit kind of guy. I really appreciate that about him. I've never had any issues with him not being there when I went to get my haircut so I can't speak to any of those negative reviews. Just a quick, professional, clean cut and some mild conversation. He helped advise me on some beard oil products when I inquired about them and you can tell he's very passionate about his work and helping make all of us look our best.
