When we first walked into Petite Scholars it was very clear that the environment was the right fit for our son. I will never forget the first impression. I thought of Ms. Martha like a child whisperer; she just gets them in a way that seems almost magical. She is good at nurturing what children are naturally talented at, so they can excel in areas they are interested in. She understands that each child is different, but that consistency of routine helps children feel secure. We had him in another daycare before Petite Scholars but it seemed there were so many kids and not a whole lot of adult supervision in the playground. Ms. Martha limits her class size. We had a highly active, four year old boy who was super hyper when we enrolled him at Petite Scholars in 2012. He was unable to sit still and pay attention. He didn't know how to hold a pencil properly. He had no writing or reading skills. In his first 2 weeks with Ms. Martha, he learned how to write his letters and numbers. She did a great job helping our son get over his hyperactivity and integrate him into a well controlled group setting. She would do lots of arts and craft projects, which noticeably helped him improve fine motor skills. Her program stimulates the child to develop intellectually, emotionally, physically and socially. After 6 months of seeing our son improve at Petite Scholars we decided to go from 3 times a week to a full 5 days a week. He had been attending a public preschool program the other 2 days a week and essentially was going there to play. He never brought home any paper, other than a few small art projects, that showed what he was learning or writing. When we decided to leave him full time at Ms. Martha's, we felt that was the best decision for him. I commuted to Petite Scholars in Folsom every day from Gold River just so my son could have the best care possible. Ms. Martha goes above and beyond expectations. She works so hard to have all the children develop the skills for Kindergarten. The amount of energy she puts into the program is amazing. Science, social skills, yard play time, writing and reading program, art projects, etc. The structured curriculum provides stimulating, age-appropriate activities. That is in addition to the educational toys, holiday decorations, music, puzzles, books, animals, costumes, etc. The list could go on and on. She is like having an extra relative to help your child during the most formative years of his life, and we were very grateful for her help. She clearly has chosen the right profession in life. Few people could manage children for such a long time, run a business without employees, and still give the individual attention they need. Ms. Martha helped my son become more than ready for school. She helped him develop as an individual. When our son started Kindergarten, he had grown into a confident student with excellent reading, writing and math skills. Petite Scholars is not just a daycare - it is a pre-school with a strong academic background preparing the child for entry into Kindergarten. Teachers like Ms. Martha are far and few between and I highly recommend her. If you speak with anyone who has had a child at Ms. Martha's they'll probably tell you that their kid is the smartest in their class. Ms Martha and her home day care was exactly what we were looking for, for our 4yo son. Although Co-vid19 regulations were relaxing at the time, we wanted to send him to a safe place and her house was perfect as she strictly followed rules and regulations. Ms Martha is great with children and has an outgoing personality. Her knowledge and passion for science topics such as plants and volcanoes is appreciated as almost everyday my son would come home excited to tell me about a science experiment he did at school. I also liked the way she continued to read with him and helped him in math. Her backyard is what I call Folsom's hidden gem! She has a beautifully curated backyard which has endless number of plants and trees. My son spent a lot of time doing hands on learning which is a great way to learn at this age. We enrolled our 5-year-old son in petite scholars for summer camp this year. We had such a great experience. It was such a unique experience for him to interact closely with nature. It was one of a kind experience for him (and us) to interact with pets, do gardening, do fun science projects, and music. It was such a serene environment to be in. As a physician I believe this person has a mood disorder. I am going to describe a part of my terrible experience in this day care. We are new to the area and we have to base our research on the online reviews. Unfortunately, not many currents. During our tour she showed us her house, she was nice, told us she was an elementary teacher before, how her yard full of plants will protect my daughter from the sun, how fast her kids start learning because her technique is unique and how other schools had call her to teach her teachers. At the end of the tour, I was sold! I wanted to start half days, but she mentioned she will charge full day. We agreed and ask for the contract. She didn't have one, so she sent it via email. When I got the contract, it was wordy, not too clear. Even though she mentioned to us she doesn't allow half days for more than 2 years, her contract offered morning, afternoon and extended schedule. There were some registration fees and wiping fees we didn't discuss. I decided to send her a text next day to clarify some questions and coordinate when to give her the contract. She didn't reply. Then I decided to call her after 5:30 pm. When she answered her first words were "You are calling me on my free time, I don't like to talk about work on my free time". That caught me by surprise, I apologize to her and I mentioned I just have quick questions to fill out the contract. She refused to talk to me and asked me to text her questions and let the contract under her mat in front of the house. Next day she sends me text telling me how tired she was of people trying to "destroy her contract, that she won't change anything for anybody." Although we taught it was rude, We decided to write the questions in a paper and let it in under her mat on Sunday. On our surprise she was in her garage. My husband went to give the envelope. My d. and I waited in the car, but when she saw him, she came, say hello to my d., asked me about our questions and spend like half an hour with my husband talking about her yard. At some point they talk about we cannot find enough reviews on day cares. She started laughing and referring of her bad review of the "sick woman who was trying to bring her monster to her," and how she wouldn't allow it. I couldn't believe how she talks about other parents, but my husband saw it as a joke, and reassure me everything was ok. First day. My d. cried at the door so Ms Martha picked her up what made my d. to scream. I offered my arms, I hugged her, and I told her I will come back later. We waited outside but only after few minutes she stopped crying. I picked her up at 1 and everything went well. She didn't mention anything. 3 hours later she called me, "I need to talk what happen this morning, you are creating terror to your child, because of you is that she cries, I won't allow you bring your daughter to the day care". What???? Then she went for about 10 min telling my she was an expert, and she won't spend energy on anxious parents and that my husband has to bring my d. She didn't really let me talk and went on and on on this until thankfully somebody call me, and I told her we will do our best and hang up. Next time my husband went to drop my d. and talked about the inconvenience of being the only one dropping my daughter, she totally agreed and didn't say anything more about it. Following day, she asked us to go inside the house to correct somethings in the contract and meanwhile started pressuring us to start paying full 5 days. Said she doesn't want to lose money and asked us to start full in 3 weeks. We agreed. However, 3 hours later she called us and start talking about other people wanting her and to start full time right away or wait for 3 months to increase time. following day... tell us she cannot send us more photos or videos because her phone is full. She recommended to us to get a new line and give her the phone so she can send us photos. (??) My husband recommended erase some photos or videos so she can send us some occasionally. Well, again 3 hours later she called my husband. I could hear her screaming 10 feet apart. She told me husband "she won't deal with sick parents who ask her for photos, that nobody do that. Told us she cannot erase photos because that was her proof against IRS (??)that we are going to create problems. At that time, I asked my husband just to let her talk, agreed and hang up. I was really concerned, every day she called us between 3-4 pm in a very rude way. Then she was talking like that in front of the kids?? Or who were taking care of them if she was not there. Naptime was already done!!! I don't recommend this person for a daycare. I will prefer somebody that not see my d. ONLY with the sign "$" on her face. It is vital to have good communication, and it seems obvious but a person less rude, more peaceful and more professional. Follow your instincts! read more

We toured this daycare recently and my daughter really enjoyed it. We talked with the provider (Ms. Martha) about starting daycare June 1st and was told that she would email over the parent packet to complete. I never received the packet from the provider, even after sending an email and leaving a voicemail over the course of a week. (She never returned my email or voicemail) The whole situation is very strange and not very professional. My 4 year old was very excited to start in the daycare and then having to explain to her that the provider basically ghosted us was difficult. I completely understand that these interviews go both ways, but its rather unprofessional for a daycare provider to tell a perspective family that they can start at the daycare in person and then completely disappear. Just be upfront, honest and ethical. I would caution other parents to not bring your child to walk through this daycare until the provider actually gives you the green light in writing that she is going to give you a spot. This whole situation is very odd and disappointing. read more

For some reason this school is not showing up on the search function, which is a crying shame! We have now been at Petite Scholars for six months, and despite some inconvenience (2 drop offs--yuck!) have decided to keep our son there next year. Here's what's keeping us: -This spring, my children have done several full on science investigations into the cycle of water and the life of the plant. They are learning the scientific method in preschool. They harvest eggs from the chicken coup, watch all of the hummingbirds that come into the garden, and build in the construction zone. This is hands-on learning. -My daughter (5) is now reading fluently. I'm amazed when she picks up the simple chapter books (that I usually read to her) and reads through a page with little or no help. Most days when I pick her up, when they're not doing an afternoon lesson, I find her on her usual spot, reading independently. -Both of my children are doing math, and my daughter is up to double digits. They beg their teacher for homework. When they don't have homework, they role play the lessons that their teacher gives them. My daughter makes the assignment, my son does it, and then she checks his work, reteaching when necessary. When done, she instructs him to put the work in his "folder," which he does immediately. This shows me how consistent and engaged their teacher is. -My son, a hyper and inquisitive 3 year old, is also reading. He started with her simple books, and now has pridefully mastered, Are You My Mother? He not only knows how to read the words, but he also loves the story and recall the events and his favorite parts. His teacher asks them comprehension questions about characterization, plot, and theme after they're done reading a book. I don't know anywhere else that I could get such thorough, engaging, individualized reading instruction. Petite Scholars in enrolling for the fall now. We visited this preschool in the afternoon looking for a place to care for our son one day a week. The owner showed us around, interacted with our son, and seemed like a good fit for our needs. After viewing the site and asking questions specific to our needs, we left. The owner offered to waive the $200 registration fee for our son because she liked our son and wanted to have him attend her preschool. She sent over her contract via email and said she looked forward to hearing from us. THE NEXT DAY.... we receive an email stating she has had " home invasion rovers" posing as interested parents and that her boyfriend and his daughter were moving in. She completely changed her story and said one day a week would not work and she wished us well. Not only did we take offense by her comment. It completely showed a lack of integrity! Not somewhere we would want our son to be after all. Thank goodness we didn't go through with committing to her caring for our son. I would steer clear of this preschool. We feel super lucky that we found Petite Scholars! We moved down here about 4 months ago and toured several schools for our 5-year-old boy. He picked Ms. Martha's school himself! Turns out it's the best decision he has ever made : ). I have to list a few things to tell you why we highly recommend this school. 1. The setup is very unique. kids get tons of outdoor play and experience in the beautiful backyard with plants, birds, vegetables. This is gonna to be a lifelong good memory for them. 2. The ratio is great. With only 6 kids, each one is getting enough attention and Ms. Martha teaches each kid according to their own development level. Another plus is that since there are only 6 kids in the class, my son has never got sick from school, so we don't have to stay home with him for sick days. 3. Ms. Martha has a great way of teaching. She made it so fun for kids to learn. My son learned how to read in just 2 months! I would like to take a few moments to recommend Martha Duran / Petite Scholars Preschool/Daycare to any parent looking for high quality care and terrific kindergarten preparation. My sons Connor(now 11), and Liam(now 9) both graduated in full cap and gown from Perite Scholars. They were so proud of themselves and rightly so. They still miss "Miss Martha" and have terrific memories of Petite Scholars. Connor came to Petite Scholars in April of 2007, soon after the school's opening and Liam followed suit in 2009. Both children celebrated their 3rd, 4th and 5th birthday's with Miss Martha with full themed, dress up birthday parties...how terrific is this for a child? They couldn't have been with a better caregiver and educator...she truly loves and cares deeply about the success of all of her students. Both boys came to the school with great social skills, but limited scholastic skills. Martha's introduced the Phonics program to them were suddenly awakened to the world of reading. Most of the children arrived able to draw simple objects and scribble. With a small class size of 6, they all received close attention. By the time they graduated, they all could draw, read, write, and do simple dictation of sentences...and all by the age of 5! Routine was great stability in Martha's school which is very important for our children, but it was always fresh and fun! From art projects, outdoor education, music time (involvement, listening and singing), imagination dress-up as well as poetry. They participated in planting and nurturing the "garden" as this is their back yard too! The many things she introduces to the children, far extend the above, but these are some of the terrific times that I am aware of as a parent, and am truly grateful, that both of my sons experienced their early learning at Petite Scholars. Our decision to apply for and have our boys interview for private school was much easier knowing how well they had been prepared by Martha. With the love, support and preparation of Martha and us, both boys attend St. John's Catholic School in Folsom. They both tested into advanced Math and Reading from the start and have yet to receive anything less than an A- in any course thus far. Currently, my oldest(6th grade) has just made the middle school honor roll...and his 4th grade little brother seems to be following suit. There is no doubt in my mind that the very strong, positive start for them at Petite Scholars played a big part in their beginnings and they have confidently soared through school getting ready to prepare for high school. I absolutely love Martha and Petite Scholars. We moved here from Texas where they teach kids to be bilingual (which is much needed in todays world) and she has continued to help us keep that w.our daughter. My daughter is 2.5 yrs old and has only been w.Martha for 2 months -in 2 months my dtr knows her alphabet in English and Spanish, knows her phonics in both languages and will soon read in both languages. Petite Scholar in Folsom is definitely a very good preschool. My son was able to read books and write his ABCs before he joined kindergarten and this is true for all the students that I know of. It is a testament that she has a structured curriculum that is very effective for toddlers. They also spend time doing handicrafts which helps motor skills and hand eye coordination. read more

My son has been going to petite scholars for almost 2 years now and I would recommend Martha to many people! Reading some of these reviews actually surprised me, my son is 4 and he knows how to read and knows his letters and how to spell, everything martha has taught him. He brings home work all the time that he does there, and he is always excited to share with me. They also make cute crafts especially near holidays and she shows me some of the lessons they do and sometimes will have him do it infront of me so I can see how he interacts with her. I like that is a smaller preschool because to me they get more quality time. Every preschool has some ups and downs, as none are perfect. It depends on how the child does there and with the other children. I'm proud of my son and he's learned so much being there. Martha is great, you just need to know how to communicate with her, if something bothers you then just ask her, it's nothing to take personal. She is very helpful and understanding. I spoke to Martha 3x before I went to see her school. She was warm and friendly. I explained to her that I have a hyper, inquisitive 3 year old and I was seeking a preschool that would work with him. She was eager and told us many tales of hyper kids she's had and how much she loved them and how well they did at her school. We brought my son there at 5:30pm and he loved the school and I loved it and I was so excited that we found a good fit for him. He tripped 3x while we were outside because he was wearing new sandals and the terrain is uneven slate, rocks, etc. I felt bad I put those shoes on him bc he's was so trippy and I told Martha he's a very agile kid and it was the sandals. He was so excited running around and checking out the new environment and she attempted to get him to sit with her to look st flash cards, but he was too curious about this new place and wanted to explore. Before leaving, we verbally agreed to 3 trial classes, that I would pay for, to see how he did before I signed him up to start his preschool career there. She convinced me that full days would be better than half days and asked me several times to bring cash or check each drop-off. She sent me home with paperwork and instructions on what to bring Tuesday for our first trial day. I went home SO EXCITED. My heart was lifted, I had found what I was looking for. Then 2 hours after we left, Martha called me at 8pm and said she'd changed her mind, that my son was not a good fit because he tripped 3x and he was liability. She also said that he wouldn't sit through lesson with her. Now, as a professional and a preschool teacher, I would expect her to expect him to be too excited about the new place to want to do that (and isn't that what the trial classses were for?) and to expect a 3yo to be a bit clumsy wearing new sandals on a terrain not meant for sandals. I was beyond upset...my husband thinks it was about money, as she brought up payment several times when we were there and kept saying I should enroll my other children (I have 3 toddlers). We think she got a better offer financially speaking after we left, so dropped us, which would be perfectly fine if she were honest with us. Now I feel she is less than an honest person. A person's word means nothing people, but now I am glad her true colors came out before we signed a contract. read more

We spent a lot of time interviewing places both large and small. Our daughter starts Kindergarten this year and she is very prepared. She has, been reading, writing, doing math better than most kids her age. She learned how to be a great student while having fun. She had exposure to art, gardening and science. A move to Folsom from Sacramento in 2013 brought us to Petite Scholar (recommended to us by a good friend). I enrolled my 3 and 4 year old little boys and in just about five WEEKS, both of my boys learned to read their first words. By the time we left in 2014, both boys were reading well beyond their age level, doing simple addition and subtraction (up to 3 digits), counting to 100 in English, counting to 30 in Spanish and comprehending the books they were reading. (ACTUALLY, IN LOOKING BACK I REALIZED THEY WERE BOTH READING IN THREE WEEKS, NOT FIVE) Martha was able to draw out my introverted oldest child and capture the attention of my extroverted youngest child and encourage their natural curiosity and love of learning. What can I say about MsMartha? She is the best and worth every penny!! I had tried several good name schools in the area when I moved to Folsom. All to keep my little boy sick. I was so happy to find Ms Martha at last. Her preschool is clean, organized and very well structured. I started my son only part time not knowing how he would do. If I could give her zero stars, I would. I had to pull my child out because nearly every day she would tell me that "Miss Martha's mean" or "Miss Martha yelled at me". There were days that she absolutely didn't want to go. This broke my heart. Of course it's Miss Martha's word over my daughter's but my child's fear and feelings were real. She seems nice every time I'm there, I don't doubt that she knows how to be nice but I just don't think this is place for my child. Petite Scholars is the most unique and magical preschool! Martha is a bilingual, fully credentialed California teacher who decided to stay home with her kiddos and then after they were older she started a daycare/preschool. It runs like a little private preschool. She offers 8-5pm full day care or part time if she has space, but she offers a one of a kind education. My son attended there 2 year ago when he from 3.5-4.5 years old for preschool until he went to public school. She was recommended by a teacher friend who knew I was really picky and having a hard time trying to figure out what placement would be best for my son. I teach 1st grade so understand the importance of early education and wanted something fun, yet academic. Martha's Petite Scholars was the perfect choice for us. One only has to look at her house to see the physical items she has to offer. (a closet full of dress up clothes, sandbox, playhouses, ride on toys, books galore, hands on toys, chickens to feed, gardening are where the children plant, etc). That is just the tip of the iceberg. She connects to each child, recognizes where they are academically and moves them forward and quickly. She works alone and never has more than 6 children at a time so she had lots of one on one time to work on letters, sounds, reading, math, science. One time I saw them doing a little play where they each had little lines to "read" and outfits to wear, super adorable. Another time, they did a water day. Science terms like solid, liquid, gases, water boiling (condensing, evaporating, freezing, etc.) I would often pick up my son and he was lying on her outside hammock in the shade, looking at books with another little boy. As for phonics, she uses these little stuffed animals and they play games with them. My son would get to toss the "elephant" into a basket all the while saying his short e sounds. He never really knew he was "learning" just playing. As for math, they were counting base ten style and the emphasis was understanding the numbers not just writing them. She made the kids feel like family, we socialized with the other kids outside of her house, meeting at Cal Fit to go swimming on weekends, etc. Since there is little turnover you really connect with families. Some years it seems like you get lucky and all her kiddos are moving to Kinder so it is easy to get space but other years, kids roll over to the next year so it is hard to get a spot. Each time I would go I would get to see what they were working on and I NEVER once saw the tv on, one of my pet peeves. EVERY time children were engaged in meaningful activities. Jennifer read more

Our three-year old was very fortunate to have Ms. Martha for her first teacher. She looked forward to dressing up as her favorite character every morning and participating in the plays with her five other friends. Outside of developing her social skills, our child learned phonics, was read to, was exposed to basic addition concepts and had plenty of time for arts and crafts everyday. Living in El Dorado Hills, we had plenty of preschools at our disposal...but NONE could compare with the experience our children were given by Ms. Martha at Petite Scholars. We now have three THRIVING elementary school children that LOVE school and learning and I will always give that credit to their time at Petite Scholars. Our first son only attended Petite Scholars for 15 months. He had no preschool experience prior to this and entered kindergarten at the very top of his class and reading well-into a first grade level. His "desk skills" were unlike a kindergarten teacher had ever seen before. His strength in phonics and reading ability required his teacher to convince the principal to have him enrolled in an advanced reading program usually only offered beginning in first grade. His fine motor skills (scissors/handwriting) are way better than most of his peers. I am 110% sure he could not have been better prepared for kindergarten. Our son who attends Petite Scholars right now is attending three days per week. He will be the absolute youngest one in his kindergarten class this coming Fall, but he already has the phonics skills, reading skills, and fine motor coordination to hold his own in a kindergarten class. Besides being ready academically, his social skills are also nurtured by Ms. Martha and I am positive he will enter kindergarten as a strong 4 year old student. The one thing that I never would have looked for in a preschool is the one thing that now is most important to me. I have two little boys who absolutely love school and learning. My kindergartener loves reading and he knows how to sit down and "work" independently on his homework. My son who is at Petite Scholars right now often says, "Do I GET TO go to Ms. Martha today?" I have never toured a school where learning was made so much fun. Martha integrates learning into everything they do and the children don't even realize it is happening. The outdoor garden and play area is so valuable. Don't dismiss it for its size. The tricycle track encircles hundreds of plants the kids help take care of. My son knows how yummy the "licorice plant" smells when he rubs his hands on the leaves. He also knows that if he does not water the blueberry bushes there won't be more blueberries to eat the next time he comes! The "butterfly garden" is a secret play area the kids adore. Both boys and girls love the little cottage for role playing. The trucks and building materials just "scream" creativity. Hauling pieces of two-by-four, bricks and ladders to build roads and bridges turns into amazing projects. The bird watching and squirrel watching through binoculars is a highlight while going on a snail hunt. The children act out stories in costumes. They have costume balls where they dance with partners. They study the food groups and are always learning the importance of healthy habits. The have "dinosaur digs" in the sand box. They learn the lifecycle of the plant, butterfly, and frog and can act them out for you step-by-step. They have "band" time and all play different musical instruments. They learn to measure. They jump in leaves and do "roley-poleys" outside. They learn good manners and how to be a good friend. The creative and adorable art projects and "gifts" the children make are just icing on the cake. They paint flower pots and plant flowers in them, make wreaths made only with cut-outs of their hands and feet. These are precious projects that they are so proud of and you will love too. It is always a good idea to visit several preschools to make a well-informed decision. I sent my grandson to Petite Scholars when he was 3. I had lived in Folsom for 23 years and paid for him to attend. He is now in 6th grade, because of the experience of attending Ms Martha's school he entered kindergarten with reading and simple math skills but he learned so much more. I started my son at Petite Scholars when he was 3 years old and I wish I had known about this wonderful place sooner. Previously my son was attending a larger preschool in Folsom and after getting sick with many different illnesses in a short period time, I knew it was time for a change. Petite Scholars was recommended to me by a friend who's daughter was currently attending. Martha runs the preschool out of her home in which her entire downstairs area is converted to a preschool. After the first week of having my son attend, I knew I had made the right decision. Martha provides such a loving and nurturing environment for the children. My son absolutely loved it! As I mentioned, her entire downstairs is converted into a preschool and she has a gorgeous backyard with so many different plants and shaded areas. Her home is immaculate and she keeps the toys very clean. My son particularly loved Ms. Martha's costume collection in which he would pick a different character to dress up as each time he was there. They would even do little plays in which the children would get to dress up as different characters and act out the stories. Ms. Martha made learning so much fun for him! By the time he graduated and was ready to start kindergarten, he was already reading at a first grade level. I can't say enough great things about Ms. Martha and the wonderful environment she provides for the children.
