5600$ for a puppy ? First thing they asked for was about financing, money is all they care about

Sadly, purchasing our two (yes, two) babies from Petland has been my biggest financial regret. I should have listened to the rumors and reputations about pet stores, but the staff was so kind and helpful, I just couldn't imagine I would have a bad experience AFTER going home. I definitely feel like I was taken for a fool. My sweet little Maltese wasn't responding during my training, so I began to question her hearing. After speaking to our vet, she determined that she could be deaf. So I contacted the Petland Warranty number and they insisted that I send them proof from an official (and expensive) BAER hearing test. Sure enough, she is deaf. For the last two months I have been battling back and forth to try to get some sort of compensation for her, knowing she will need special training. What I ALSO have encountered (after owning many dogs in my lifetime) is that both of my sweet babies (a Brussels Griffon also), peed and pooped in their cages where they sleep! AND eat their poop!! When I told my vet, the first thing she asked is if they came from a pet store. Apparently she sees that all the time, so I was embarrassed to say yes. They all looked at me like "whelp, you should have known not to buy from a pet store!" I also have to UNDO the bad potty training habits that the puppies learned living in a box with other dogs. Petland offered me 25% refund, 50% store credit, or another dog. Really? I'm not going to just give her back. She's not a pair of shoes! Of course I'm going to keep her and give her the home she needs. I asked for 50% refund or 75% store credit but was rejected both times. They threw in a vibrating collar (that I already had to buy). As of today, we are still back and forth in this debate. Such a shame. Petland and pet stores in general have gained another enemy and extremely unhappy customer. From now on I will advocate for rescues or working directly with a breeder. Petland just doesn't seem to care about doing things right and I am SO disappointed in myself for trusting them. PLEASE I BEG YOU don't buy from this store. At the very least, make sure you read the fine print clearly and don't glaze over the warranty. Do you research and learn how they care for them. It seems as though everyone is right. They are a glorified puppy mill and KNOW people will sacrifice their budget for the cute puppies in the window. And if there is a problem, they don't do right by you OR the puppies. They still protect their bottom line. I 100% DO NOT AND WILL NOT EVER RECOMMEND this store. The employees may be nice, but in reality, you (and those sweet babies) are just a profit. read more

Unpleasant employees that pester customers every few minutes as if they do not want business. Brought my dog in to get some pet food, and was bothered so often I just decided to spend my money at PetSmart instead. The puppies they do have in there are not being properly tended to and look depressed. Do not recommend this store. read more

We went here the other day with the family and had a great experience. Cade was very nice and helpful and willing to take his time and show us around. They had a huge selection of cute puppies. They looked healthy and friendly. They let you meet any puppy and play with them. I like how they packaged everything together in one package, however, The price is not cheap. Expect to pay $4-7k for a new puppy. If price isn't an issue then I would definitely recommend checking this plays out. read more

I didn't have a terrible terrible experience, but I wanted to state my opinion on their "new rule". We played with one kitten that was there and then another one got brought in while we were with the kitten. The baby didn't really want to play with us so we wanted to try the other one, we were then told if we weren't planning on adopting that we could only play with 1 animal! There was absolutely nobody in the store basically me and one other person and about 4 employees. Those animals probably hardly ever see any love and how am I supposed to know if I wanna adopt any of them if I can't see how they behave and act with us. I understand if you're hesitant with people who clearly come to mess around but I could go to a low grade pet shelter and pet hundreds of animals. Me and my husband are friendly looking people who wanted to show some animals some love and we were only able to spend about 10 minutes in there. PUPPIES HAVE PNEUMONIA!! DO NOT RECOMMEND PETLAND!! Petland is horrible. The service was excellent. Problem is the dog they claimed was healthy is now on the verge of death one day after purchase.... We weren't even able to name the dog... I bought a golden retriever from Petland Sarasota. August 11th. I spent $4500 on the "perfectly healthy" Golden Retriever. Petland insisted that I signed all the paperwork regarding the pet looking in "good enough condition to leave". I spent about 15 minutes with the dog before purchase. The dog seemed normal while it was with us the play area. Less than 10 minutes after leaving the store on August 11th the dog started coughing & was breathing quickly. The following day August 12th the dog was breathing rapidly & produced a yellow mucous from its nose. Today Sunday August 13th, I drove two hours to an emergency vet clinic. The dog is not able to stand on its own. Green discharge from the nose. THE DOG HAS PNEUMONIA. There is a whole list of internal problems with the dog. The vet bill is little over $7000 & there is still a chance this puppy will not survive. Overall terrible place to buy a puppy. Will be further pursuing this. Unbelievable, the dogs are slowly dying & Petland are giving away those problems for thousands of dollars. Not even 36 hours after purchasing puppy the not even named puppy is 50/50 chance of death. Petland what shame. Truly any human being that works there is heartless & fake & does not care about the animals in the building. If there was an option for zero stars. That would've been my choice. Very pushy place and the dogs are so expensive they won't tell u the price over the phone or online you have to go and drive there and then after 30 min of them telling u how much of a deal ur getting there tell u the puppy is 5,500 dollars and try to push u into it. I used to go here just to play with the puppies, since I couldn't have one of my own. Spending time here I realized that this store should be the prime reason for "Don't Shop, Adopt". The puppies are all sick, and are in cages until taken out to play, one time I saw two bigger dogs in the same cage. What disgusts me the most about here though is the one scene I saw happen. One of the poor dogs pooped in his cage (probably because he needed to go and there's not really anywhere for them to be let out), I saw one of the ladies there but the dog to scold him. If you thought Brooke Hotus was bad, at least she presumably takes her dog out. It was this day I learned that I would never, ever support this place. I feel terrible for not telling the manager what I saw that day. There's also the fact that these puppies are the price of 1 year of my brother's college tuition! I am writing in my home in Minnesota and my husband and his inseparable beloved shitzu " honey" all 8 pounds of her are safe tonight in Sarasota fully ready for Hurricane Irma in the Brookside Middle School shelter thanks to the incredible kind staff at this Petland.... what a HAIR RAISING 24 hours I have had ‼‼ Yes.... after patiently subtly begging him the last three days to realize " this storm is BAD", he calls me at 11:30 pm last night ( always asleep by 10), hesitantly saying," well... um... I am thinking I goofed... and I may have to evacuate... tomorrow ( Friday) morning and head to Alabama". I had just gotten off the phone with the outstanding Venice City police who agreed with me now that Irma was veering more west towards the MIDDLE of Florida, " it IS... too late to evacuate... 75 is a solid RED line "parking lot" to Atlanta". His blood pressure age 70 was 190/150 at Mayo in Minnesota this past February, so I gently told my husband, "don't worry I have the online address and just spoke with Venice Police... go to sleep... I will take care of everything and send you where when what to do via email." Then called Venice Police at 1 am and 2 am MN time. They were WONDERFUL help. WONDERFUL.... Petland saved us. This morning at 8 am FL time the Irma Hotline opened... it took a FULL hour wait. Shockingly they said," oh... And you will not be allowed in the Pet friendly shelter without a crate and the animals are in a different area... and during the storm NO one/ or animals is allowed outside‼ Nowhere on their website " SCGOV.NET" does it say this. So at 9:15 am today... I went on Yelp to the top 10 pet stores. It took me 2.5 hours. Petco and Petsmart were closing at noon. Everyone was SOLD OUT. Other stores were closing at 2 pm for the storm was making landfall now in Naples Sunday morning 2 am!! And it took the maintenance staff to pound his door at 11:30 am to WAKE him up... I had been calling for 3 hours on off. He was exhausted. West Coast Florida was in Shock. NO one was emotionally nor physically prepared for the " 145 mph winds and storm surge in Zone 1 of 4-10 feet --BRAND NEW NEWS jUST this morning. The shelters only opened this morning in Sarasota! Our condo will be under 10 feet if still standing. I called Petland... they had just 2 CRATES LEFT! ( what were all those people without crates going to do? Why don't shelters hv crates to purchase RIGHT there???!!!' This is 9:30 am today and they ran back / forth three diff times for I kept losing the connection But they saved him EVO , Blue Freedom and Natures Balance canned no grain food in ALL the best flavors-- end of stock for all varieties , and a small bag of dried food. the shelters provide ZERO food or WATER for PETS... and no mattresses nor beds for people. Out of sheer fear I called them back ( i live in Minnesota) three more times today graciously meekly asking if the crate and food were still there and if he had shown up and profusely apologizing ... for I was so worried... I even begged them to call me if he refused to buy everything! They were ALWAYS so so kind, never angry nor irritated, genuinely friendly understanding positive warm for they could tell how scared I was. Honey IS ... an emotional support Pet for my husband who in 2013 had 2 cancer ( fine now) 3 back fusion surgeries in 13 months PLUS lost his brother and mother. His nerves are still very frayed. Probably the last time they will let us here, because apparently it was something "we did". Employees are nice and all, but the place looks slightly unhealthy for dogs. Sure pet stores are hard to take care of, but you can see dogs "sleeping" on the metal bars and some even have stains along with what seems to be pee under the bars. We chose what seemed to be a super energetic dog that ran everywhere and kept fighting with another dog, as theres 2 spots separated by bars. When I bought a puppy the person just skimmed over the paperwork and what she did tell me wasn't correct. It was a very poor job and caused me lots of problems later. They wanted to charge $7,500 for a Boston Terrier and will toss in a cheap package of crap to justify their prices and offer you a credit card where they charge interest to pay for it. According to them the puppy had no health issues but when we took her to her first vet visit we were made aware that she has a congenital condition we were NEVER made aware of! I went in with my family to buy a puppy and the smell in there was awful, I went to another petland before this one and didn't smell as close as this and the other one had other pets, she didn't help us at all she kept eyeing my daughter, and just passing us, we waited by the front desk and nope nothing, definitely wouldn't recommend coming to this one at all, yes the puppy were cute but definitely weren't getting treated good with that awful smell ! read more

My adult daughter and her boyfriend went into the store today looking for an Australian Shepherd puppy. They walked in and waited for 30 minutes before they were even spoken to by an employee. During this time several other people walked in and were helped right away. May I point out the people who came in did not have appointments and were older adults. When the employee realized that my daughter was not leaving, he came over and was very rude to them about needing an appointment and saying that since they are obviously not going to buy one, they could not play with any. The discrimination was not ok given that my daughter and her boyfriend could buy one and are actively looking. Very sad. read more

I was skeptical about there being health issues because of horror stories from other places but so far he has been an energetic little guy who is developing great! I went into this establishment to look at puppies and it did smell pretty bad. They claim they get their puppies from breeders which may or may not be true, however, it was the prices of these dogs that shocked me! They try to sell pups for $3,500 and up to 10,000! I was really disappointed at that and they try to convince people to finance the puppy! C'mon why are you robbing people! Making puppies unaffordable, so they take longer to sell, and because they take longer to sell, their pups get sick. I inquired about 2 puppies and they were both on antibiotics. I was told they can't be sent home, but you can leave a deposit. Wow, I hope they go out of business. read more

I was visiting FL (apparently I need to include my boarding pass as proof) and popped into this joint with my friend to get some hairball remedy for her cat. This place is absolutely atrocious. The dogs are from mills, the place stinks, the staff is ridiculously rude when you inquire about the SMALLEST piece of background information. If you love dogs, you will not buy them from this hell hole. They say their dogs are from USDA licensed kennels. That does NOT mean it's not a puppy mill. Nearly all of large scale puppy mills (the worst kind) are licensed by the USDA. read more

I went in today to look at the puppies, immediately as I walked through the door I could smell urine, as my husband and I walked up to the puppies, almost EVERY dog was covered in urine and feces, it's no wonder that so many people have gotten sick dogs from this place. I called in with cheer about a pug puppie that I was excied to meet. Once I arrived they were very kind, later lying, and took us to meet the puppy and wanted to charge me upwards of 6000 dollars!!! Unless you can pay for your pup in FULL, do not purchase your dog here. They set you up with financing agencies and forget to tell you that the interest rate is 188% after 90 days. After coming back the next day, we could not reach a reasonable price. The said the "package" was included in the price yesterday - today, no. WILL NOT REFUND $300 hold deposit. Oh yes, it's in the fine print, but NO ONE tells you or points it out. They also price their dogs for more than triple the price of a reputable breeder. BE WARNED. Don't even go in there. I love dogs. There are Pomeranians, my favorite dogs, there sometimes. I love seeing them. I had a dog that just died recently and it made me feel better when I saw his breed there. He was a Westie. I love we it here because if you might want to buy a dog, they let you take it and play with it in a stall for a few minutes. Even if your definitely not gonna buy it, you can still take a few minutes with it! I rate this place 5 stars. If your looking for a dog then come here. That's how good Petland is right there! But wait, there's more! You can find ferrets, birds, and more there! They sell some gear and equipment too. There are sometimes bunnies! Sometimes the birds talk, sometimes they're quiet. It just depends. You can find food, collars, leashes, and more for examples of gear plus equipment. I enjoy going here. I have a new dog, and he's really nice. We don't know what breed he is. I wanted to go Petland soon and I did. I just saw some pets and browsed. Nothing new I got though. I decided to ask the employees what he could be and I showed them a picture. They told me what he was. I enjoy going here and I love it. I was there recently. I think if you want anything to do with a pet, and you see another pet shop, say nah and come over here! I understand if you live in another country, state, or county though. I suggest coming over if your here though! I live in North Port. It's about a 40 minute drive over from my house. I wanted to wait a while to see if our puppy had any problems before posting a review for Petland. It's been 9 months since we bought our Maltipoo from them, and she is perfectly healthy! No problems at all, with the exception of a little cough a couple of weeks after we bought her, which was easily treated. I was very reluctant to buy a puppy from a pet store, with all of the terrible puppy mill and poor health stories that I've heard, but I did my research and felt comfortable with this specific store. My children have asthma and allergies which flair up terribly around certain breeds of dogs so I was nervous about adopting, and not knowing the dogs exact breed history. I was able to take them to Petland and see how they reacted to the puppy before buying her. She came with a 30 day warranty for any potential health problems that we could have run into, where they would pay the vet (at the time it was Dr. Small's office in LWR). She also came microchipped and with an AKC certificate which shows her family history and details. I was and am very happy with Petland and our puppy! read more
