I arrived at PetSmart Kearny at 10:10 for my 10am appointment. My groomer was Jessie. She said my service would be between 3-4hrs. I mentioned that my dog did have some matting, Jessie automatically said I'll be charged the maximum for the matting. This was before even assessing my dog's fur. Therefore I was charged a 30min and a 15min dematting fee for a 12lb Shih Tzu/poodle. I returned to PetSmart Kearny at 2:30pm.(Over 4 hours later) I was told by Jessie, who at the time was in taking a new dog, that my dog is not ready because they had many dogs today. She suggested that I go pay and come back in 30mins for my dog. I took the receipt and that is when I noticed the double matting fees. I went back into the salon to question the extra charge on top of my dog not being ready in the 3-4hour window. I said I would like my dog now since she is not being cared for and I'm being overcharged. The other groomers in the salon except for Robyn started defending Jessie saying there were many appointments today. My dog is a twin and is not used to being away from her sister for a long periods of time. Hence why I heard her barking the entire time I was there. Jessie brought the manager who I believe is Natalie. I explained the situation to her and while speaking to her other groomers at the salon were jumping into the conversation. I felt like they were ganging up on me and holding my dog hostage. One groomer went as far to say that she will not argue with me when I wasn't even speaking to her. I said I will not pay for the service if my dog is not ready by 3pm. She went to the back to speak to Jessie and returned to say that my dog will be worked on now but I would have to step out of the salon. I agreed. Gladis is apparently another manager, when my sister called the store to get the name of the manager on duty, Gladis proceeded to tell my sister whom she did not know was connected to me that she just had to deal with a difficult customer and that's why she did not want to share the names of the managers. She eventually did because my sister quickly realized that she had to lie to get the names so I can make this complaint. I paid for the full service when Jessie finished my dog at 2:57pm. When I received my dog I asked Natalie for the name of the groomer that continuously jumped into my conversation with her and she refused to disclose the name. My experience today was like no other. I've brought both of my dogs there multiple times to be groomed by Robin and I've never experienced this extended wait time and I have never been double charged for matting. I feel discriminated against, bullied and this experience definitely caused my dog anxiety. read more

I've been coming to this location for over a decade. I brought my old dog, who passed 3 yrs ago, and now my new baby, Enzo, to see Alyssa or Jen ONLY. They were great with both of my dogs. My old dog was a bit scared but always relaxed when he saw either one. My new dog has terrible PTSD/anxiety so he is only comfortable around them. He's a bit much so it takes someone extremely patient, nurturing & a true dog lover to deal with him. I also took my new dog, Enzo, to training with Michele. She did such an amazing job with him! Enzo was very aggressive & highly anxious when I first got him. I almost gave up on him twice to bring him back to the shelter. He's a working dog & needs a job to do, so Michele was able to help me with lessons & games for him that will keep him busy and out of trouble. 3 years later and he's completely turned around! He's a blessing to have & I'm grateful for all the time and effort she put into helping me. Whenever I need to pick something up for him at the store, I bring him so he can say hi to her. He truly loves her so much & she has an amazing personality with dogs. She's extremely knowledgeable & knows how to handle all types of dogs. I brought my dog to this location for a simple grooming appointment and ended up spending hours in an animal hospital on Memorial Day. When I arrived for my 9:15am appointment, Jolina mentioned it would take her longer than normal due to having 3 other dogs ahead of him. That should have been a red flag in itself being that they had just opened and already had 3 dogs AHEAD of mine despite my appointment. There were 3 other groomers in the salon and only one of them were actively grooming when we arrived. At 1:30pm, I received a call from the Store Lead, Jessie, who in the most unbothered tone continued to tell me my dog is in route to an animal hospital in Clifton due to an "accident" but couldn't give me any details as to what actually happened other than the fact that my dog was bleeding on his leg and that he's not sure why or how it happened. He continued to say "This isn't common but because there is blood we need to take precautionary measures and bring him in....but oh don't worry, we won't charge you for the appointment"... obviously!!!! This is clearly common for them if you read the other review where this exact scenario has already happened. I asked Jessie who had my dog and he mentioned Joline was in route with him and "not to engage with her". I rushed to the animal hospital to find Jessie himself and Joline standing in the lobby followed by a trail of blood that was coming from my dog's paw. As I approached the two, the Vet did as well and I asked What happened and how bad is the cut, given the amount of blood droplets all over the lobby floor. Jolina wouldn't even look at me and Jessie says to the Vet "Oh this is the owner so we'll let him take over from here". He quickly passes off the leash and tries to make a dash for the exit. I stop him mid-exit and ask where he was going and who was going to cover the bill. He then goes "Oh they have our information, they can just forward us the bill if any"....If any???? It's an animal hospital!!! After they both make a quick dash, I sat in the vet room for hours after they determined that Jolina cut off my dog's Dew Claw with the clippers. A dew claw needs to be removed surgically if it becomes a problem. My dog's dew claw was not problematic. Dew claws are connected to large veins which is why he was bleeding so profusely. It's basically a dog's pinky toe! Because of the amount of blood, they ended up having to sedate him (which can be fatal) so they could get a better look. While sedated, they had to supply stitches to the wound to stop the bleeding. After waiting almost another hour, the Vet was able to connect with Petsmart to cover the $1,400 medical bill and I was left with a BARELY HALFWAY shaved dog, who now has a cone on his head, stitches, and is on antibiotics. I also had to miss work the next day to monitor his reaction to the 3 different drugs he will be taking for the next 10 days. I understand accidents happen but they didn't even have the common decency to apologize, let alone follow up with a phone call to make sure everything was ok afterward. They handed him over at the Vet, foot the bill and moved on to the next appointment. It's obvious that they were overbooking themselves and rushing through groomings because of how aggressively she must have been trimming down his leg to cut off an entire appendage!! The fact that I was called at 1:30pm with a 9:15am appointment and my dog was only halfway shaved down his back, goes to show they overbooked and rushed to finish him, which ultimately led to an amputation due to their carelessness. When I first got my baby (She's a Maltipoo), I brought her here. Naturally, I assumed everything was okay as she always looked nice. After a few months, I noticed small issues such as cutting her nails too low, nicking her ear or cutting her hair too low. I also started paying attention to how she would respond when I brought her in. She would always cry and fight. She NEVER wanted to go. I was told by a former customer that they're really rough with them and after their services are done, they're kept in crates/small cages. This definitely didn't sit well with me and it terrified my dog. She hasn't been back since Summer 2019. I began taking her to a local, in-home groomer and her response has been the polar opposite. She hugs this woman and wags her tail - which tells me she's happy. Pay attention to how your little fur baby responds to people and places. They're always spot on. read more

First of all, this location is literally 5 minutes from my house so I may be a bit biased on the convenience. The employees are always super helpful, I always go in with a new question about a product or a dog treat. A few weeks ago I found a flea on my dog, all hell broke loose. I ran here and attacked the manager with questions. He told me to calm down (haha) and showed me the way to all his go to products. It was nice to have someone be that caring during my mental flea breakdown. They're always having good sales too. My doggo is tiny so I come here frequently to check out the sales on sweaters for the winter. Recently they had FREE pictures with santa! Of course I grabbed Jacky and we went to visit Santa Paws! There's a varied selection of cat food, and I was able to find Cleo's brand (Wellness). The cashiers have always been very nice to me and the lines go quickly. I have not seen the store get super crowded (this may be because the store is relatively new). One of the best reasons to go to this location is convenience because it is so close to other shopping plazas along that strip of Passaic Avenue. The location also has a grooming section. So took my dog in here to get groomed, he's a 10lbs dog who's harmless but some how they manage to tell me he's aggressive mind u my dog is a service dog who's trained. This happened to me once they called me to tell me they weren't able to do my dog cux he won't let them cut his nails, when I got there my dog wasn't even groomed at all only had a bath which the didn't brush cux he had knots, expected me to pay them for making more knots, well know u don't wet a dog that has a lot of fu n no brush them! They get super knotty, which I had to get another groomer to do. I paid some one else but besides that it's an ok pet smart usually clean n wide warier of food but never have collars for small dogs that's about it, the regular employees are actually really nice but usually only have one Line open do hope ur not in a rush. read more

I managed to get a last-min grooming app for this past Wednesday and since this location is so close to me compared to my usual one (Secaucus) I decided to give it a chance. Never again. When I arrived two employees were clipping a dog's nails. I've never heard a dog cry so much before. I spoke to the dog's owner and she told me that overall she's been happy with their service so that calmed my nerves. I dropped off my 7year old, very friendly, Lhasa Apso without any issues. 2 hours later I get a call saying they've accidentally nicked my dog's tail. This has never happened before. I've taken my dog to 3 different grooming locations and everyone has always told me she's well behaved and very calm during her service. We've never had an accident before. They also nicked her abdomen and her face was unevenly cut. Be careful whom you leave your pet with! I unfortunately can't remember the name of the groomer but our app was on Wednesday at 1:30pm and there were two women working. One light-skinned Hispanic and one dark-skinned woman. read more

I went to this location yesterday to get a few things for my dog and bearded dragon.. I know that these places have a stigma for the animals that they have.. Unfortunately I did see some very sick reptiles. I did take some videos to record their conditions.. This place does not take into consideration that these reptiles need fresh veggies not kibble , one bearded dragon was eating his own poop and another looked like he wasn't even alive. I told the cashier and she did report it over the walkie but I doubt they even care. I highly recommend going somewhere else to buy your reptiles.. They are charging $80 for sick animals smh read more

Updated review! I went to Petsmart on 12/23 to purchase two male guppies. In the tank where the guppies were I noticed a dead yellow guppy at the bottom. As an amateur to this aquarium hobby, I didn't think anything of it. I brought two guppies home and now three of my fish have died. The white spots on their bodies point to Ich and now I realize that the two new guppies could have been carrying the parasite. On this same trip I almost purchased a snail but in the snail tank I saw two black mystery snails feeding on a dead neon tetra. It's truly unacceptable that this would be case and it is the last time they will be having my business. Please be warned that the fish here are not completely healthy. read more

This petsmart just recently opened by my house a few months ago. I take my dog here once a month for grooming and she also comes weekly for dog training. For her grooming she sees Manny. Manny does a great job with cleaning our dog and he is very friendly. For her training we train with Gianni. Gianni is very knowledgeable about dogs and training and she makes training very fun! I just wish this location had more of a selection of clothing for dogs and I wish there were a Banfield animal hospital inside. read more

Jennifer has been grooming my Serena for the last six months and she is amazing. She actually listens to how I want my baby girl groomed and I am very specific. I don't like her shaved and she mostly uses a scissor cut. Jennifer has also given me excellent suggestions on how to brush her at home and the correct brush to use. I highly recommend Jennifer. Really never had a bad experience at this location until today. I normally go every 2 weeks for my cat food and on this trip I was looking to replace a fish and maybe a fish tank. All the aquariums they had were too big except for one or two, the one I picked up was for Betas. I asked one sales clerk if I could put a Beta in with a neon Tetra, she said she did not know and that I ask the young man behind the register. I remember this young man from months ago when he refused to clean up after someone's dog had messed on floor. So I asked about the tanks and if I could just teo tetras in this tank, he told me it was only for Betas. He kept telling me because I was putting two tetras in I would need a bigger tank, told him the bigger the tank the more powerful filter and I've already list several small tetras to this. He than proceeded to tell me to get a 20 gallon ?? Told him again I camt because of how powerful the filter is and I'm not gonna kill my fish. So he gave me that look like I dont know what else to tell you. So I switched to a smaller tank asked for one tetra and got stares from him along with two other sales clerks. So the one young lady said she would help, so she scooped out a tetra and went to put in bag but noticed it was not in net or that little tank they put in....some how it was on floor. She picked up with her nails, told her 8 did not want that 9ne because it's already traumatized and will probably die by the time I get home. She said no problem I will leave it in small tank. Well I get to register and she brings fish over but I notice the fish that fell on floor was gone, thought oh my she put back in with other fish wrong...I get home and notice that I have not one but two fish...guess she gave me the one that fell on floor too. Checked my receipt and sure enough got charged for both. Worst experience so far at this location read more

Long story short bought some Glo Fish for my 4 year old daughter, the next day 3 out of five were RIP...she cried and was sad i told her id take them to the Dr.... I paid $104.00 to this store so that my dog could be in a pet training program. That was November. First, they said lost the receipt. Okay, I faxed them a copy of the receipt. Then they still seemed to not believe me. Finally, I get a call from Diane who is the trainer and she says she is the only trainer between a few stores. She set up a half hour session just to give my dog some background. She then says I'll be scheduled for the next class in January but if she has a cancellation in December she will let me know. Okay January is almost over and no one has called me to set any date whatsoever. I'm going to contact Better Business. What a rip off. Upset and feeling taken. read more

Everything is cleaned up and organized. At check out they have the option of donating. Employees aren't like other stores that push you to donate. The fact that they don't makes me want to give more. I'm posting this review out of frustration and shock of the lack of compassion of the staff during closing hours yesterday on Sunday, November 12, 2018. At PetSmart in the Kearny location. I arrived at the store as they where closing after searching frantically for somewhere to buy emergency kitten formula. I had just found 3 abandoned 2 week old kittens that where out in the cold for God knows how long, freezing and hungry. So as I arrived I was told they where closing I explained I had an emergency and all I wanted was kitten formula. I was treated rudely and I was told to leave, again I tried to plead with the staff that I had very young kitten and they could die if I don't get the formula in them as soon as possible and that there was no where else I could find that had formula and I know this because I tried 2 places before finally arriving at PetSmart. The staff ignored me and turned there back on me and with his back to me yelled we're closed. Frustrated I asked for the manager and to my shock the person I had been pleading with was the manager. He should not work at any place that has anything to do with animals if he doesn't have the apparent love or compassion for them. This would have taken no more then 5 minutes. This man was so rude and cold I just cant imagine someone like him working there. I will no longer be shopping or supporting this store in any way. I'm always rescuing and fostering different animals as well as having my pets so I shop frequently for different things now I'll take my buisness somewhere else. The staff failed to notice that shoppers are rarely one time shoppers and appreciation is shown in many ways including compassion for rare situations instead stores start losing buisness due to senseless behavior. It's these experiences that makes me want to deal with a mom and pop that handle situations more accordingly and most important with compassion. My advice is shop somewhere else for the same products read more

The man running the "Aquatics" section was the most knowledgeable fish guy I have ever spoken too. We have been customers of the Secaucus store for years, but switched to Kearny once we found out the manager Tom moved there. The Secaucus store is no longer as clean as it once was, and you can. Ever get help in small animals; extremely long wait for crickets. The Kearny store is cleaner, and friendlier. Tom greets every customer, and makes a genuine interaction with them.
