I took a couple of gold coins I'd gotten many years ago to PGS in Palatine last week. We needed some cash for something special, and wanted to see what they would offer. The door is locked when you arrive and there is a doorbell. They answered right away and politely asked why we were there. I told them I had some gold coins to sell and they immediately sat me down and asked to see them. Not wanting to show everything, I gave them one of the coins to see how they valued it. (I did my research before going.) Their offer was on the low end of the range, but acceptable. Since it was a little low, I decided to sell the one and to hold onto the others for now. The transaction was fast, and within ten minutes I showed them the coin, they valued it, and I had a check in hand. Fast, reasonable, and nice people working there. Service was good, people were friendly. Price they paid for silver bullion was below spot as expected. However when asked what spot was they said $100/oz, they were $20 back which is fair these days. Problem was spot was actually $115. Silver was volatile that day but had recovered prior to me entering the store. I lost about $1200 on the transaction. Tough to get a quote as a lot of dealers aren't buying due to volatility and you can't get a quote over the phone. I would recommend checking spot price in front of the dealer. If they don't agree, pack up and head elsewhere. I won't return. read more

I've gone here a few times and everytime got low balled(lower than 10+ others even ai gave an "lol" to their offer) I didn't bother haggling because I figured they would never go higher than others would, I've also sent coins in and had them improperly graded. read more

What sparks me to write this review so far on is a post I just saw on Reddit about a bad experience at this business. The post was marked as deleted but the comments were still there. I first went to PGS about 4 1/2 years ago. I had a pretty decent split between gold and silver to offload. A couple other shops near me that I had been to before were much smaller and owned by guys who were older and pretty much treated their shops as hobbies. Just not as serious as they once were, being semiretired. Building off that, I liked the idea of working with some pretty nice and conversational ladies as opposed to a shop owner. It can make things feel a little more honest, but it's a double-edged sword. The staff doesn't have the same personal gain of lowballing a customer, but their hands are much more tied in what upside they can give. The only options I was comfortable with were a shop somewhat near me or getting a quote and shipping to an online dealer. What they paid me was fairly decent. A couple bucks below spot for silver bullion/bars, about 8% below spot for fractional gold rounds, etc. It seems their pricing favors bullion a bit more than circulation. Theresa spent what must have been a good 40 minutes compiling my sheet. Some people seem to talk about staff being rude. I don't doubt there have been some of these instances, but I think a term such as shrewd would be a better fit to describe them. I may just be a buyer one day, and if so, I hope you guys recall the honest business we have done and return the favor to me when you are my seller. Best of luck with the fifth location. read more

Be careful! Shop around! Go elsewhere ! I went in to this PGS shop in Palatine , IL today. I have been buying and selling silver and gold long enough to know a good shop from a bad one. This is potentially the worst one I have been to so far. I brought in many items today... but only listened to the woman evaluate one before I simply walked out. For context - The kitco bid price for silver at the time I was there was $31.07 ...and they offered me $20/ozt for my .999 silver! Only two possible explanations for this horrible offer....1) they are either wildly uninformed in the market In which they operate.... or else 2) they are attempting to use predatory practices. Either way, I quickly took my business elsewhere. I sold the same items to a different shop in Elmwood Park for $30/ozt....50% more than what PGS offered! Took a number of 18k gold jewelry pieces into the Palatine shop for appraisal with intent to sell if offer was good. We worked with Brandon and we were very happy with his professionalism and friendliness. He was patient and thorough in his dealings with us. His final offer to us was much more than we were offered at 2 other appraisers. We sold all of the pieces to him and he cut us a check then and there. I took in some 14 Kt gold jewelry, I had 14 grams and it was market value $50 a gram, They offered me $145. Then the person got upset because I did not want to sell it. If you have stone settings, they don't want the stones so they will take them out to weigh it; just be careful. They are not jewelers and if you decide not to sell your piece, it may be ruined. Don't waste your time with anything silver plate. The going rate was 15 cents for some bigger pieces. read more

A coin dealer located in Palatine. They have decent pricing if you want to buy common bullion from them, but a bit on the low side if you want to sell. For example, 1oz American gold eagle buy price was about 6-7% over spot which is fair, but they offered below spot price to sell to them. IMO, a premium bullion like AGE should have been offered spot at a minimum, especially when they're selling at their rate. read more

Emailed for an estimate on silver proofs I recently acquired. I was very specific when I filled out the form as to what they were, what Mint they came from and included a photo of the COAs. It specifically says on the COA's "Giant Half-Pound Kennedy Silver Proof". In my description I further clarified they are .999 Troy Silver. After an offer of $18 for all 6 coins, I was the one who had to point out the spot value of silver, do the math and advise they were worth over $700 in scrap. The response I received was "Oh I see . Sorry. We are $2 behind spot. If we can help bring them in". Now, I requested a valuation... I did not receive one, only a half-baked attempt to give me $2 below spot price. I still don't know if there is a market for these coins. If you had taken the time to look and advise on the market and give me a short understanding that they are or are not sought after... we could have avoided this review. Aaron, there's a thing called customer service. Pay attention to details. Reassure your patrons; help them feel comfortable! By being lazy and unmotivated... I will take my coins elsewhere, even if it's a worse deal. Why? Because you treated me like roadkill... stuck your nose up at me... probably because when you asked if I had more coins, I responded: no. I have the entire email thread, which I may chose to post here depending on if and how you respond to this review. :) SELLERS, be cautious about appraisals from this facility. Went to this shop for the first time 7/3/24 to have a coin looked at and I immediately felt unwelcome in the shop. The woman working gave me an appraisal of the coin which was not even close to the value of the coin. She then told me she doesn't have much knowledge in coins and doesn't know the value. She was uninterested and gave me the feeling that I was wasting my time so I left the shop, I live an hour away too. Unprofessional and unwelcoming. read more

I give this place two stars because their response was very quick. Sadly they didn't read my email. I reached to sell some Lincoln coins from my father's estate and dealt with Aaron. I sent him some pictures of the pieces I had and asked if he was interested in buying. I received a prompt yet very apathetic response. it took him three emails to discover that I wasn't asking for an assessment after he said my items could be easily flipped on eBay or there was 'no value'. I've been in sales for almost 20 years and when a potential customer knocks on your door you don't start the dialogue by insulting what they're offering. If you feel that items you're being offered have no value, the professional thing to say is ''we're not in the market for that right now'. Sales 101. Even if I was asking for an appraisal, which I was not, you don't tell a seller there you would only buy something because you want to sell it on eBay. That's just common sense. read more

After speaking with Susan, she directed me to Aaron from the Palatine store and the founder. After reviewing several hundred pictures of the collection, he explained which were valuable and which are common. He saved me the expense of paying for an in-person appraisal but spent a long time with me on the phone and provided me with my options for liquidating the collection. Store in Wheaton is clean and clerk is very friendly and pleasant. Very careful about safety with Covid-19. Provided chance and required sanitizing hands before dealing with items. and required face masks. However, customers that want to sell silver coins and gold must do their homework first and compare buying prices for both silver and gold coins and jewelry. If you are a seasoned seller, trying to liquidate your collections, then no worries, you will do ok if you do your homework. PGS Gold and Coin is a family owned shop, which makes a difference right off of the bat. When you take gold and valuables to other shops, franchised and corporate, I've heard horror stories with lowball quotes way under spot price, but not here. There is one main thing that this other reviewer has not taken into consideration. As an inexperienced seller, you need to understand that gold and most other precious metals trade like stocks. Their values appreciate and depreciate like anything else does. And they can't buy it for the exact value that it is worth otherwise they don't make any profit. It's just business. PGS boasts great customer service and a friendly environment. I think that, without a doubt, this is the absolute least they can say. Was in around the area and had a ring I found laying around so I figured why not sell it? I looked on yelp and found this store and saw the good yelp reviews they had! I liked how you had to be buzzed in, ensures it's a safe environment to be in and the store looked pristine. I was helped by Sue, she was very nice and genuine. You could tell she knows her stuff and her vibe was very positive compared to other stores where you get a gimmicky sales person. It probably took like 10 minutes!
