Also, at that time I read the book, Younger Next Year which I haven't been able to get out of my head. Though I can't tell a lot about chapters mostly aging and staying motivated, I do know that the premise is keep moving! Three years ago some part of my nerve/tendon/muscle structure got pinched. I'm not sure of the origin of it but it was likely from trying to lift (and drop) heavy boxes headed for the attic. My job (Metro bus driver) provides me with good insurance, so I first went to Ballard Health Clinic for massage. Though I have an excellent opinion of BHC, the pain and range of motion issues were getting worse. Driving a bus for hours really pushed me into an overuse situation. While this was certainly a bother, my stiffness was tolerable. The things changed as I would wake up with pain and tingling down my right arm and hand. Painful to the point of keeping me up for hours. Continuing to bus drive, do yard work, and play toss was putting me into a spiral I didn't understand. With Sonja's help, and support from my primary and BHC I learned my pain and problem was Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS), which involves compression of the nerves and arteries in the lower neck and upper chest area. I've known Sonja a very long time, and we've talked about her practice at the clinic, but I didn't understand acupuncture. I would come to the clinic, find my favorite chair and needles were getting place everywhere. With TOS and overuse, it took several visits to reverse this spiral. Stretching and icing also helps and now I can get into a preventative routine and use CAP/Burien to keep the chi moving. One more thing... about my insurance. Even I figured out how to self-submit to Regence and access my benefit. Part of keep moving is to not allow things like a little paperwork to become roadblocks. I value a lot the positive support and encourage of CAP/Burien to stay active. 70 is just around the corner. Patrick

I wasn't a skeptic by any means, but I do sometimes suffer from "if it doesn't work immediately, it won't work at all" syndrome. So I remember telling myself to treat it like physical therapy. Commit to going in regular intervals for a reasonable period of time, and expect improvement to be slow and steady. I suffer from an autoimmune disorder and am already showing signs of a secondary one (which according to my doctors; it's common for autoimmune disease sufferers to eventually start collecting bonus diseases). Working at a bakery at the time of my first sessions, it was difficult for me to spend long shifts lifting heavy bags of baking ingredients and getting up and down on my knees to clean the bakery machinery. One day, only a few weeks into regular treatments (twice a week), a coworker commented on how I wasn't using my mobility aids to get up and down and wanted to know how I was doing it! I couldn't believe I hadn't even realized! But after that comment, I absolutely started realizing ALL the little things that I was suddenly doing that I hadn't been able to without pain or help for nearly a decade. I felt like I had gone through a factory reset! My joints, my menstrual cycle, and even my mental health improved so much in such a short time. I will never be able to thank the practitioners at CAP enough for everything they do for me to keep my body and mind strong and mobile! If you are hesitant due to a fear of needles, or are confused about the community room setting, please do yourself a favor and at least give it a try! It could change your life.

Granted the muscle injuries I was dealing with were a known slow healing injury, but the addition of acupuncture and cupping really helped speed things along. The combination of cupping, acupuncture, massage, and coaching has made me feel well enough to move on to dealing with some other residual issues that have been hanging over my head for some time. I've found Ben's coaching to be extremely effective and I look forward to our regular sessions. He's genuine and empathetic while creating a no-judgement environment which makes emotional work that much easier to deal with. I've been to a number of acupuncturist and Ben's technique is very good. He's gentle, responsive, and adjusts procedures as appropriate to meet you and your body where you are that day. There is no one size fits all with Eastern medicine and I appreciate the nuanced approach that Ben has. With all his various services, it's like a "one-stop" shop for health and wellness. Ben has helped me the most with emotional healing and guiding me on how to understand my feelings. I saw Ben initially only for accupuncture and cupping to address my neck tightness. I really like his cupping technique cause he moves the cup around your body which feels like a reverse deep tissue massage. After a few appointments Ben expressed concerns that my neck tension was caused my deeper emotional stress and he wanted to help me though coaching. He was right, but I wasn't ready to admit that. Unlike visiting typical doctors in western medicine whom spend 5-10 with you, David was more attentive and compassionate to his patients and really tried to find the root of the issue. I visited western doctors for almost a decade, trying various topical meds and oral antibiotics. The result seemed to be only temporary, not to mention some side affects I had. Through David's guidance, I saw a better and more permanent result to my skin issue. Even though it did take longer than I initially expected, looking back it was worth it because I realized a quick fix that I initially expected was not realistic.

(And both were very different issues.) He is very calm and gentle. He gave me good needle treatments both times. On my first visit he did lots of research and contacted a western dr. about what was going on with me. As well, he took in what I had to say about my feelings about western doctors (not so good since they mis-diagnosed my meningitis and I ended up in a coma) and he recommended a doctor that might suit me if I wanted to go that route. I've had lots of acupuncture in the past from a different practitioner so I feel like I know what a good treatment is. And David gave me good treatments and excellent care. He is relatively new as a practitioner (a few years in private practice I believe) but he is already really really great. I know he will become one of the best in Seattle as he gains experience. I highly recommend him.

I suffer from low back pain due to a very old/ unknown fracture that healed wrong. I have what I believe is knotted muscles in that area along with tough scar tissue. After months of searching for an Acupuncturist, I located Dr. Cho who is an in-network provider for my health Insurance carrier. Upon completion of my initial visit, he informed he's not billing Insurance and I would have to pay for my visit out of pocket and seek reimbursement from the insurance company. I thought it to be a little odd but no problem. He swiped my card for $120 and informed he'd email me a receipt. Cool! I received the receipt the following week and immediately submitted it to my insurance company to seek reimbursement less my $25 co-pay. A couple of months go by and I had not received reimbursement. I contacted the Insurance company and was informed the provider (Dr. Cho) billed for treatment and was reimbursed instead. I sent Dr. Cho an email inquiring about reimbursement and he insisted he had not billed for my service and has not been paid. I argued with my insurance company for about a month, filed a Department of Insurance complaint as I'm am owed $95. So finally 4 months later I got a call from an Executive with the insurance company confirming Dr. Cho in fact billed and was reimbursed and he should be the one reimbursing me and Dr. Cho should NOT be requiring contracted patients to pay upfront. Fast forward to today, I receive an email from Dr. Cho offering to reimburse me but at a lower rate than what I'm owed. No sir, you will pay me everything I am owed and not a penny less. He's agreed to reimburse the $95 I am owed. I do plan to have him pursued for Insurance fraud.
