This building is the central building for the country's mail sorting and distribution process. I pass by this mammoth of a structure each time I go to school or head home. It's a wonderful thing to behold. Few government buildings are as imposing and big as the Manila Central Post Office. Indeed, when I look at this structure I often wonder to myself why the country isn't littered with more structures like it. It's neoclassical structure is like a breath of fresh air compared to most of the box like buildings that I see populating Manila's streets. I love this building because it reminds me that there are hidden architectural gems in Manila that will stand out and make me look twice each time I cross the street or look around the corner.

Seriously, looking at the Post Office loom over you as you cross the river is an arresting and breathtaking sight. However, all that majesty cannot hide the fact that the Post Office is in decay and needs all the help it can get. I'm hoping some group comes in and restores it for future use, because Philpost simply cannot take care of this magnificent structure anymore. There were talks that the Post Office was going to be converted into a hotel, although it appears talks have fallen through. I don't mind this turning into a heritage museum or something. Anything, really. Just save this gorgeous building, please!

I make a trip to the post office three to six times a year. No, I'm not sending love letters…read more Rather, I'm sending big boxes that are either full of toys and clothes for my wife's niece living in Sweden or loaded with books and collectibles whenever someone buys the occasional stuff I sell on eBay. Sending stuff in big boxes abroad has never been a chore for me. I actually find it easy because Barangay Bel-Air has a satellite post office along Valero Street. The small office is air-conditioned and the longtime postal workers on duty are very polite and reliable. In the years that I have used their services, I never had a bad experience with the post office guys in Bel-Air. Plus, there's rarely a crowd lining up in this satellite office, unlike in the main Makati City Post Office along Gil Puyat Ave. In spite of what they say in the news, the Philippine Post Office, or PhilPost, is still the most practical way of sending letters and parcels to any point in the world. For one, the national postal system has all the necessary infrastructure to perform all mail-related services. The best thing about PhilPost is they have the most affordable rates for letters and packages. And if you know when to send your goods (avoiding Christmas and other peak holiday seasons), PhilPost can actually beat the delivery dates of big private couriers, especially when it comes to international shipments.

When I asked her if I could see the weight of my parcel on her weighing scale, she said "Do you doubt me? If you don't trust me then go to another post office branch, go to the main branch and send your stuff there. You're the only customer ever who requests to see the weighing scale." All this with her exasperated and intimidating voice and eyes that look like she was gonna murder me any second. I did not feel safe, and do not recommend that people send their items here because I felt like the clerk hates people and would sabotage their mail.
