What an amazing small museum! We had a personal guided tour by Docent Lonnie! Lonnie provided us with a plethora of information on the museum and George Phippen, the artist. A Western Museum opened in 1984. This museum may be small, but the exhibits are of high quality and are very unique. Admission is $10.00 and $8.00 for Seniors. I had never heard of George Phippen or Ray Swanson prior to today, or any of the other talented artists! The current temporary exhibit is 'The River Flows' and features watercolors of the American West. This museum is well worth a visit. read more

Small but select western art. Permanent as well as rotating collections. A 'don't miss' museum in Prescott.

Our event planner, Aurora Desert Events, chose this venue for our annual company Christmas celebration. They were very accommodating! It was a very elegant evening, especially due to the tour throughout the museum. Many employees told them they'd like to bring their families to go through it again! Our dining area was perfect! A hidden gem. What extraordinary work by George Phippen and Ray Swanson. So glad their work was not lost to time. Go. You will be amazed.

I'm glad to see the museum responded to my comments about mandatory masks and vaccines. Makes me wish I hadn't checked the website before going in. Hopefully the manager will update the website to prevent future confusion. Looks like a really cool place to visit. read more

Extremely disappointing. The main exhibit hall was closed. The 3 rooms that they had open had about a dozen paintings. Staff was only engaged to collect admission fees. We did get a $1 off. The art store in downtown Prescott has better quality paintings, more of them and no admission costs. read more

What a gem! This is not your average small-town museum, instead it has top-quality western art (including a Howard Terpning!) Split into two main galleries with different exhibits, it was easy to get lost in the art. Recently expanded, it takes tremendous advantage of the surrounding Dells and does not disappoint with the collections it presents. It would be a stunning venue for weddings, too. Only $7 to get in ($6 with AAA!) it's well worth the visit - even as a local! read more

Last night I attended an event at The Phippen Museum of Western Art, I have driven by it several times a week for the almost 5 years I have lived in Prescott. I found the permanent collections to be interesting and the visiting Cowboy Artist collection was wonderful! Visitor or local resident, I urge you to take the time to stop in and visit - it was worth the price of the small admission and the docents made the collections come to life! read more

The Phippen Museum was really impressive for a small town art museum. It is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. Especially since the drive out there is so pretty (it's off AZ89 which is the hwy that goes past Watson Lake). They are up on a little hill surrounded by prairie and you have great views of the boulders... I was tempted to hang out at the picnic tables outside for a while. The museum building is very nice as well. Everything seemed new and well kept and wooden floors were really lovely. The galleries were not too crowded and had good flow and lighting. It really was just better than I expected (especially compared to the dingy and dinky Smoki museum). The museum is named for George Phippen who was the founder of the Cowboy Artists of America. Some of his art is on display as well as many other member artists. I am not a huge cowboy fan so a lot of it didn't appeal to me. But it was still nice to look at. The only artist I recognized was the one who did the horse sculptures outside because she has a piece on display at the Phoenix Art Museum. I did really love the bronze and stone sculptures by a Native American artist but of course I forgot his name already. I think it would be good if they could get some more southwest landscape type paintings (like Georgia O'Keefe style) or even Latin American artists and not just cowboy. But I guess that is their thing. They also had some rooms that were set up with exhibits on life in the Old West and had old wagon wheels and other "artifacts". Those felt a little out of place in an art museum. But I did enjoy seeing all the old saddles and I thought the one about the cattle brands was interesting. Overall, the Phippen Museum was very well done and well worth the $7 price of admission. It is probably only about a 10 minute (gorgeous) drive from downtown Prescott. So give it a try, Yelpers! read more

Really great museum! I've never been much of an art person, but as I get older, I'm finding museums are a really relaxing way to spend time. We were fortunate enough to be in town for the Western Art Sale & Show presented by the museum in downtown Prescott. That really piqued my western art interest! The current exhibit is Inspiration to Creation and features pictures of the artists and what inspires their work along with some truly amazing sculptures. I've never seen such beauty. The talent in display here is fantastic! It was fun to learn that some of the pieces were on loan from a bigger museum in Scottsdale so major artists definitely have a voice here! You can't beat the views even just standing in the parking lot of the museum. I think it overlooks the granite dells so you can enjoy beauty inside and out! read more

My third trip to the Phippen Museum this past week was the best ever. I give it 5 stars due to the outstanding current exhibit on Western bronze sculptures and the artists behind them (this was the best part... seeing a brief video/photo/written background on each artist). The curators of this exhibit just did an over the top job, and made this an enjoyable and informative visit. The remainder of this western and cowboy inspired Museum is such that I keep going back, and I also wanted to highlight the quality of this particular exhibit. read more

Up until I took a tour around this museum I had no interest in western art. Actually, to be honest I had no interest in art in general! When we first got here we were greeted at the door by some of their guides and we told them that we hadn't been there before, but that one of the group members I was with had been many times (my grandpa collects western art). Immediately she took us on a tour around the museum, which is just incredible. I learned so much, and I enjoyed every second of looking at the art and hearing the history behind it, our tour guide was incredible knowledgable! I now have a completely new appreciation for western art, and find myself wanting to research it more! I look forward to my next trip to Prescott so I can come here again and see the new art they put in! read more

This art museum is as good as it gets! They have one room of cowboy memorabilia that are authentic items used by early locals. The paintings were amazing artistic interpretations of National Parks in the western US. Most of the work was created by current western artists, but their were also historical pieces on loan from the Grand Canyon National Park. The western art also included Cowboys, Horses, and Native Americans depicted in paintings and bronzes. I enjoyed the museum immensely and look forward to visiting again! read more

I cannot say enough good words for our visit to the Phippen. As former horse owners and having a daughter who has ridden for most of her life, this was such a find. The art is top drawer cowboy and farm art in many forms. There is a gallery of the art and sculpture of Solon Borglum, very impressive collection. The saddles that are in the gallery are just wonderfully displayed. The Phippen workroom and studio is great. I was taken with the robust collection of cowgirl art and memorabilia. They have a study table with books related to the various genres of art in the gallery which I enjoyed because I love books. I loved the chair and table made from horse shoes, very well done! We took many pictures which we will treasure. The gift shop is lovely with a nice choice of decorator items, books and prints. The docent was delightful. All in all this is a place to return to with every visit to Prescott. Prescott is blessed to have this museum in the community read more
