The menu is extensive and it was a challenge settling on just one but finally settled on stir fried chicken, shrimp, and beef with veggies on rice vermicelli. My dining partner had a grilled pork chop, fried rice, and fried rice. The entrees were competent (yet not spectacular), plentiful, and decent value. A nice change from the usual quick service fare. Went for a late dinner right before they closed so wasn't sure what the quality of service would be like, but we were not disappointed. We split an order of pork dumplings to start the meal which were yummy. My fiancé got the rare beef pho, which she enjoyed a lot (as did I). My meal was fine and I didn't love all of it. Some of the meat I got was a little too chewy so that was a bit disappointing, but I loved the flavor of everything. Absolutely love this place -- I can't believe I haven't left a review until now. Pho Binh Minh on Upper James is hands-down my go-to spot for Vietnamese in Hamilton. The food is consistently fresh, flavourful, and comforting in the best possible way. I usually order the vermicelli with grilled beef -- tender, juicy, perfectly seasoned -- and the chicken fresh rolls, which are packed with herbs and come with an addictively good dipping sauce. Everything is balanced and never too heavy, which is exactly what I want from a great Vietnamese meal. Nice spot for pho in the Hamilton area near No Frills. Got the fried spring rolls to start which were well cooked and good filling. The Bun Bo Hue was really well done, had a good spice to it and the toppings were great. The only real complaint was that there weren't enough noodles (could be personal preference) but overall a good choice for Vietnamese food in the city. read more

Our order was ready 25 minutes after placing it and we were surprised it was completed so quickly. Unfortunately, we weren't impressed. The tofu and mixed vegetables with rice was tofu, romaine lettuce and rice. Best dish was the stir fried noodles, but the others were either very salty or lacked in flavour. We tried this place out a few weeks ago and liked some dishes more than others. We were impressed with the pho, and added all of the sauces - available at every table. The ingredients were fresh and the broth had a nice flavor that was almost cinnamony at first. We didn't care for the lemongrass curry with shrimp very much. Tucked away behind the plaza near the back that is easily missed but the food was absolutely not a miss! It hit all the right places and was very warm and hearty - we got the Pho Dac Biet! Hamilton has quite a few Vietnamese restaurants but Pho Binh Minh is probably the best in the city so far. Unlike your typical Viet restaurant, the atmosphere and decor here is more sophisticated. Dining utensils and napkins are not on the table and are given to you once you've ordered food. Ordered the #22, the house special pho. A large size was definitely LARGE and was easily shareable between 2 people. I prefer my pho broth steaming hot but sadly it was a little warm and under seasoned. Noodles and meat were cooked perfectly. The side of bean sprouts and herbs were fresh and plentiful. The restaurant is slightly cramped due to the number of tables present in the dining area. Came here during lunch time on a holiday and it was a full house. Would definitely be coming back here soon when I have a crave for pho! read more

Pho Binh Minh offers authentic Vietnamese cuisine in the Hamilton region, located up on the mountain. It's easy to miss this establishment on Upper James Street as it sits behind a Middle Eastern restaurant, which is right beside a busy NoFrills plaza. Going to McMaster, it was always difficult to access this place by bus, but when my parents visited me, they would always take me to this gem of a place. Food: We started with the Rice Paper Roll with Shredded Pork and Rice Paper Roll with Shrimp and Pork. This came with a sweet fish sauce. I'm a fan of thin vermicelli in my fresh rolls and Pho Binh Minh definitely delivered on that end as the rolls were wrapped well; it wasn't too dry or too soggy. Very standard fresh rolls and a great start to a dinner meal. I preferred the Shrimp and Pork over the Shredded Pork as the Shredded Pork may be a little dry in terms of texture to the average customer. We also got the Spicy Hue Style Beef & Pork Vermicelli Soup (Bun Bo Hue) based off of a recommendation from the server. This comes with a side of cilantro, basil, lime, bean sprouts, and cabbage. This dish was perfect in terms of flavour and texture. It had all of the components that I would like in a Bun Bo Hue, which includes noodles that aren't too thick, lots of meat, a rich aromatic broth, and just the right amount of spice and saltiness. Next was their Rare Beef & Tripe Rice Noodle Soup (Pho Tai Sach). We got an Extra Large size and boy was this huge. Lots of noodles and meat! The dish wasn't perfect and the broth wasn't as flavourful as I'd hope for. I wouldn't recommend getting this, but I am a picky eater when it comes to Pho as my mom always makes homemade Pho and homemade Pho cannot compare to restaurant Pho. If you're new to Pho, this will be a pleasant experience. Again, this comes with cilantro, basil, lime, and bean spouts which adds a flavour and texture to the Pho. I got the Grilled Pork Chop, Grilled chicken with Lemongrass & Shredded pork with Rice (Com Suon Nuong, Ga Nuong, Bi). I've always gotten rice dishes whenever I'm here and I'm never disappointed by the result. You get a side of Pho Broth Soup, as well as sweet fish sauce with each rice dish. The grilled chicken was very juicy, tender, and was my favourite out of the meats. The grilled pork chop was less tender, as expected with a pork chop, but had a unique sweet flavour to it that made me wanting more of it. The shredded pork added a different dry texture to the dish and when mixed with the steamed rice, it made for a perfect combination. I would recommend getting this dish over the soup dishes. Atmosphere: This restaurant is very family friendly, but also makes for nice casual dining or at night, it has a nice dim ambiance to it which is great for dates. Definitely one of the better looking and more spacious Vietnamese restaurants in the Hamilton area! There are booths for those looking for more comfortable and private seating, as well as open tables for those who enjoy eating in the open. Service: The service here is amazing. This may be biased as I am Vietnamese, but the servers do pay attention to your dining experience and are always checking up to see if you require any additional things with your food. Unlike other Vietnamese restaurants I've been to, the servers here are always so bubbly, they crack jokes with the customers, and you feel as though you're dining at a family place when your interacting with them. The food came out VERY quickly too. Everything was ready within 5 minutes of ordering and nothing seemed like it was rushed. Overall, I felt comfortable eating here because of the stellar service. Price: We paid around $4.50 for 2 rolls of the fresh rolls. $9.99 for the Bun Bo Hue, $10.99 for the Pho, and $9.50 for the Rice Dish. Not bad compared to other places and definitely left the restaurant feeling satiated. Verdict: Really, my 5 star rating should translate to a 4.5 because of the lack luster pho / dry shredded pork, but I can't justify giving Pho Binh Minh a 4 out of 5 because of their amazing service and excellent Bun Bo Hue and rice Dishes. If you're going here, I wouldn't suggest getting the Pho, but I would definitely get any one of their rice dishes. The servers are very attentive and make you feel welcomed. You also get complimentary tea while you wait for your food and their menu is diverse enough to please all kinds of diets. Tried this local Hamilton Pho establishment. Walked in and place was clean and had a modern look to it ! Servers were pleasant Menu had good selection ! I ordered the curry chicken soup and the wife ordered a pork dish ! The curry soup was small and had a little watered down taste meaning not much curry flavour but it was alright . Her pork dish was average . The only problem here is the food took a while to come out ! I ended up at Pho Binh Minh for lunch on a recent Sunday afternoon. It's your typical Vietnamese restaurant in terms of decor and set up. You write what you want from the menu onto an ordering slip and someone comes to pick up the ordering slip and when the food is ready, someone delivers the food to your table. i ordered a large Pho Dac Biet Binh Minh ($8.50 plus tax) and a small order of cha gio which are deep fried spring rolls ($4.00 plus tax). The pho was pretty good but not amazing. Fresh ingredients, noodles were cooked properly, decent cuts of beef, good tendon and tripe and the broth was definitely above average but it's not a msg free broth. The deep fried spring rolls didn't have the crispy bubbly exterior that I prefer and the inside filling had all your basic traditional fillings for a deep fried spring roll. It was a pretty average deep fried spring roll. The service was pretty standard for a Vietnamese restaurant and the place was pretty clean. Overall, it's a pretty good option for Vietnamese food. They have an extensive menu with all the traditional Vietnamese dishes, the prices are reasonable and the food from what I tried wasn't amazing but pretty good in general. read more

I'll probably be in the minority and maybe my expectations are higher but we really did not care for Pho Binh Minh. First - Service here is a bit odd - by all impressions it is a full service restaurant but then we noticed that we were left a check and pen to fill out our order. You then take your slip to the counter - just weird. Second - Food: I ordered the Com Bo Luc Lac (Vietnamese Shaking Beef) and this had to be the worst version I've had in our travels. The dish reminded me more of an overcooked american version of pepper steak than Bo Luc Lac I've had in DC, Chicago or Little Saigon in California. All the other versions were larger cubes of steak - cooked medium rare in butter with tomato and onions. This was very small overcooked pieces of beef with red and green peppers. A real let down. My wife had the com tam with pork chop and shredded pork. It was passable but left a bit to be desired in the flavor department. Lastly we ordered a soda chanh muoi (salted lime with sugar and soda) and a mango smoothie and both were fails. Both drinks didn't come out until just before we finished our meal. The soda chanh muoi was more like a lemon had been squeezed in sugar water with a pinch of salt added. In all versions I've had (including Ho Chi Minh) the drink is served with a pickled (salted) lime in a glass with ice. You macerate the lime, add sugar to your own taste and add ice and soda water. Here it wasn't even served with soda water - total fail. The smoothie was just as bad as they failed to blend the drink long enough to get ride of all the large pieces of ice. The boy (3 yrs old) drank a bit of it and we threw the rest away. We were passing through - so it's possible that given the options this is the best in the area - but I hopefully it was just an off day or something. read more

It was a late evening with wind and a cold drizzle. I was craving for noodle soup. While I was searching through Yelp, this place stood out from the list. We decided to try without a second thought and ended up being the right move. This is a big restaurant compared to other pho restaurants. It has 5 - 6 booth seating areas and large dining area. Very spacey, clean and neat. All of them were speaking Vietnamese and background music was Vietnamese music too. Actually we were only non-Vietnamese customer at that time. When we sat, our waitress gave us a menu and order sheet. It took us a little while to decide. They have a big menu. Various Vietnamese foods including a big assortment of pho. They will come and pick up the order sheet once you fill up order sheet. Food comes out fast. We enjoyed food we orders but pho was best I've ever tasted. It was really really good. It's really rare for me to show two thumbs up with just one bowl of noodle soup. But it was that good. Garnish on the soup was dead on. Broth wasn't greasy but so rich with flavor. You could tell they put lots of effort to making their broth. Sad thing is it's 450 miles from my place, I won't be able to visit so often. I will just dream about it. This is literally my favorite place for Vietnamese food. Their pho is good, the broth is sweet and very flavorful. I love their vermicelli with sausage, chicken and spring roll. Fried rice, fried noodle, lunch combos are good alternatives too. They serve generous portion which I could always bring home some for next meal. Price is reasonable. Ok I have literally been to this place twice in two weeks or so. I have been waiting to write a review in case the first time it was just too good to be true - but it's not, its just GOOD! I am always looking for new and delicious pho restaurants in my area - I recently moved and searched to find a new place close to me. This place popped up and I was on my way. The location is a little strange, nestled behind an Indian style type grocery store (I think that's what it is). Once you find it, it looks like one of your typical pho style places - nothing fancy but you just wait until you order! The menu is quite large with lots of different things to choose from - noodles, curries, soups, etc. I of course ordered the beef and chicken pho - which is a bit of a change up from my just chicken pho! Honestly both times I have visited our food came out lightening quick. It must have been less than 10 minutes! I was so excited and hungry so naturally I was impressed. Everything we ordered was piping hot - beef vermicelli, beef and chicken pho, and cheese wontons. Everything was spiced just right, all the ingredients were so fresh, and the service was friendly (filling up our waters as soon as they seemed a little low). Such a nice feeling to know I've found a go-to pho place! This place is clean, large inside, and efficient. I just love the food - so good! Definitely the best Pho in town. I went there because my Vietnamese client told me about it. The restaurant is not very visible on Upper James (big road), so unless people told you about it, you probably won't go in. They recently renovated a bit so things look more modern. The Good: 1. Unlike most Pho places I've been to, they give generous toppings and not just noodle. You can switch rice noodle to egg noodle, clear noodle and even udon (they call it Thick White noodle). 2. Great taste!! Their French beefy stew is the bomb and so is Hot and Sour flavor with chicken. 3. If you like dry noodle Vermicelli, they have the best IMO. For only $9.50 or $10.25, you can get VERY yummy Grilled Pork/Spring Roll and Vietnamese style Grilled Sausage or Tiger Prawn. Very good portion too. I've been there many times. Next time I am going to try one of their Pork Chop rice dishes. They seem popular! The Bad: I really like vietnamese style Iced Coffee but I find the price is a bit high for that nowadays so I never order from there. :( Overall, this is definitely one of the best Pho places I have been. The service has been spiralling downwards so bad that i have to make this review we had an incident ordering take out, we arrived to pick up and the food was not there they told us to wait and they will make it, fair enough however 5 minutes later a customer came in complaining they got the wrong order and the waiter figured it was ours and he had no hesitation to give it to us? we had to make a fuss and few people in restaurant noticed this and was also disgusted by there action. anyway they are one of the better pho places in hamilton, but the service just keeps getting worst read more

There are many gems in Hammertown but one wouldn't think Pho would be one of them but somehow I knew this was going to be a good one. Of all the bad things there is in this town, food is definitely not one of them. I came in with high expectations, not quite as high as the CN Tower but maybe high as one of the many condos being built in the six. The space almost feels ghetto luxurious; clean, simple and a tad too pretentious for a pho joint. Even the condiments for your pho is piled high like there was a vegetable and herb sale somewhere. These are probably the freshest condiments you will find at any pho restaurant in the world. They overachieved with providing shredded cabbage with the usual bean sprouts. Okay I am rambling. The pho was very good. The broth is clean, aromatic and very flavourful; probably one of the best in recent memory. It tasted and looked like a broth built with time and patients as you see "floaters" in it; tiny bits of brown beef fat floating in your broth (this is the stuff that gives it flavour). The noodles done right and al-dente and the beef was very much above average. Excellent lean cuts that were med rare-med and the other cuts of the cow were also prep with great care and attention to details. Service is adequate but noone should be expecting premium service at any Vietnamese restaurant anyways. This is a great place for pho and one of the many hidden gems in Hamilton. Pho is one of my go-to's in the winter months - cheap, delicious, and, with enough sriracha, perfect for pre-empting any potential illnesses by slaughtering your sinuses. This location is also one of my go-to's. They're quick and efficient, and happy to customize if you ask. (I always order the rare beef pho and add coconut milk with hot and sour soup base to it since a friend of mine made it for me one- try it; it is very nommy) My only complaint is that they do sometimes try to hustle you out, which makes it a bit less ideal as a date location or one for a solid catch up with a friend. read more
