I love Vietnamese food and Pho Chau is the real deal. It is unashamedly authentic without any concessions to the west...and that's the way we like it. It is a nice clean place. It is modern, the tables are generally large, and the seating is comfortable. It is also busy, and that is generally the sign of a good restaurant.There is plenty of parking near the front door, which is a definite asset when the temperature plummets (It was 11 degrees outside last night, and snowing). The service is very efficient. Lots of little asian girls buzzing around in a veritable flurry of activity. We didn't need to wait for anything, despite the restaurant being jam-packed with hungry souls. It is worthwhile to note the restaurant doesn't serve any alcohol. Their tea is good and there is an apparent unending supply. So, to the food. Fried egg rolls, fresh spring rolls, stir fried beef and veggies and chicken and vegetables. It was all very good. The portions were large, everything was super-fresh and for all of the above (Including tea) we paid $23. And that, in anyone's book is great value for money. read more

The food is this little Asian diner, was absolutely inedible. The eggrolls were scrawny, the pad Thai noodles were roaring hot, Tom Yum soup was volcanic!!! Way over spiced! I ordered a root beer float and they filled it halfway with ice cubes a dribble of root beer and yes, a small dollop of ice cream,no froth, just horrible. Who would ever put ice in their root beer float?! They seem like nice people but the food is horrendous. We struggled to eat even half of it. My mouth was agonized from the unbelievably over seasoned food. when I complained the waitress she asked if I had added any of this seasoning , I hadn't, of course, because from the first spoon full on, it was pure agony. Taco Bell has better food then this place. And I hate Taco Bell! Can you believe the waitress came and asked me if we wanted a box to take the uneaten food home? I wouldn't even feed it to my dog and even if I tried, I'm sure the dog would definitely turn its nose up to it and even if it did try to eat it, it would probably kill the Poor thing. I'm visiting Rochester to be seen at the Mayo Clinic... and I'm a fan of Vietnamese food wherever I travel. Naturally, I went on Yelp to find the best in town which led me to Pho Chau. Once again, Yelpers' reviews steered me in the right direction! Restaurant exterior / interior: It's a typical Vietnamese restaurant in appearance. Simple decor, like a local diner, yet clean and presentable. Plenty of seating - saw lots of families seated at tables throughout. Parking in the private lot, however, seems somewhat limited (but I found a spot easily since I dined before the dinner rush hour). Service: The woman who appeared to be the manager/owner, was very pleasant and welcoming. I observed her while I ate my dinner and she seemed to recognize her "regulars" as they came in the door, greeting them warmly, even poking fun at them with inside jokes they shared. My waitress was equally warm, attentive and accommodating. (Two men in big cowboy hats, having never had Vietnamese food before, asked a waiter what he recommends and the waiter took his time explaining the various types of food and what his personal favorites were. The customers were gracious and, when their food came out, seemed very pleased with their selections.) Food: In a word: Impressive. Artistic food presentation is not usually something I expect at Vietnamese restaurants, but I have to say that this place gets an A in that department. Presentation, aside, the food was delicious. I ordered spring rolls and the grilled pork with steamed rice dish. Both tasted just as good as I've had at some of the best Vietnamese restaurants on the West and East coast. I didn't expect a place in Rochester, Minnesota would live up to those standards, but Pho Chau definitely did! Price: Most everything on the menu was around $7 give or take a buck or two. The portions were perfect for the price. Definitely a great value. So why only 4 stars? Well, I've only been here only once and before I give any place 5 stars, I usually want to try more dishes on different occasions, just to make sure. CANNOT BE BEAT! The best bang-for-your-buck restaurant in town. Food + Service + Price = AMAZING! The food is consistently outstanding. We always (intentionally) order too much so that we have leftovers for days. One dish for each person will be plenty with the large portions provided. The problem is, there are too many good dishes on the menu to order just one. We order a few and eat "family style" and take the rest home with us. The owner/server is the most friendly, helpful and attentive person. If you introduce yourself to her, she will remember you for life. Simply amazing. When you return multiple time, you feel as though you become a part of her extended family. Great people! I'm not afraid to bring any one here...vegetarian, people who don't like spice, those who like a lot of spice, people who typically don't eat Vietnamese/Thai cuisine. There's something for everyone. After almost a month in the Methodist Hospital at Mayo I had picked all the staff's brains about where to get some good food and hands down Pho Chau was on the top of everyone's list. We hit PC at lunch rush and there were only a few tables left but we were seated quickly. Since their menu is so huge it took a bit to decide what to order but the waitress came back and checked on us every couple of minutes. When the food arrived, which it did quickly, it was jam packed full of flavor. The spring rolls were packed full of fresh herbs and tasted awesome. My rice noodle salad came with two egg rolls and a skewer of shrimp as well as the bowl of fish sauce dressing. My sister's chicken rice noodle soup was next to boiling so it had to be cooled down a bit but was loaded with chicken, herbs, rice noodles and came with a plate loaded down with bean sprouts, limes and jalapeno slices to customize the broth. Portions are huge, especially for the modest prices they charge here. The lunch crowd turned over quickly and a second lunch rush almost filled the dining room again. There is no doubt in my mind that I will be back to Pho Chau! read more

Best Vietnamese food in Rochester, MN. Our only regret is that we didn't discover Pho Chau sooner. We lived in Rochester for almost 3 years before finally saying "Hey, let's check this place out." Now, we're moving away, and will truly miss this little place. We started every meal with the same appetizer: vegetarian spring rolls. Big, chunky, delicious. Can't go wrong. Not vegetarian? Get the regular spring rolls and you won't be disappointed. The portions are very generous, so we would only order 1 entree between the two of us, and it was still more than enough food. On our first couple visits we each got our own entrees, but quickly learned that we couldn't eat it all, and would always end up taking left-overs home (we wouldn't dare waste it). The place isn't fancy, so don't expect to walk into a high-brow restaurant with uniformed wait staff. This is a small, family-owned/run joint with the bare essentials needed to seat and serve you comfortably. The food is the focus, and we were glad for that. The staff was always friendly and warm, and eventually learned our faces and knew that we always ordered the spring rolls. Toward the end, we didn't even have to order them anymore, they just knew. THIS IS NOT CHINESE FOOD people. I can't tell you how many times people around us (evidently first-timers who have never left the state) came in and proceed to ask why they didn't have Wontons, Egg Foo Yung, etc. Idiots! However, the staff would always smile and respond kindly that they serve Vietnamese food (and would suggest close equivalents). The female owner of this restaurant was so inviting and friendly! My order was taken by a local high school student, but then after the meal was prepared, the owner (chef) came out and spoke with me about the meal. The food was delicious, I had the spring rolls and grilled shrimp rice vermicelli noodle salad. The food was served perfectly and in large portions. If I lived in the area, I would eat here weekly. There is a minor smell to the restaurant, but I got over it after being in there for about 5 minutes. I can't wait to go back to Rochester to eat at this restaurant. I have eaten here close to 20 times and I don't know why it has taken me so long to write a review. So here goes. I (and my wife) LOVE this tiny restaurant on Broadway. We have NEVER had a disappointing meal here. We have tried to order something different every time we visit and it is always exceptional. Yesterday I had the "Chicken in a Pot" and two side orders of spring rolls and my wife had the soup. We both commented that for $22 total, you just can't eat better than that. Also, the owner is so friendly and funny. The wait staff the same. Remember, if a restaurant is crowded, and especially if it is of the same ethnic origin, then you have found a small jewel. This is the place. They have done away with the outdoor seating, and enlarged the restaurant so that the outdoor tables are now inside. When you consider this is Minnesota, and maybe you have 3 months that lend itself to dining "el fresco", this was a smart move. No more waiting as we have had to do on several occasions. Since I eat a lot of Vietnamese food all over the US, I thought I'd try this place out. One of my favorite types of soups is pho and at least for me, that's the thing to try out at any Vietnamese place the first time. The pho here was better than I'd expected for sure. Compared to other places I've had in many other cities, it's above average. I also had one of the pan fried pancakes. Pretty good flavor on it, but it crumbled too easily - too much stuff in it. I have tried this place twice, and both times have been super disappointing. The meatball pho had like 4 meatballs in it and the broth was lacking in flavor. There's supposed to be spices and roasted onions, but I had to put so much hoisin sauce in it just to not waste a whole bowl of soup...and it was costly. The second time I went I had the rice dish with grilled pork. That too was lacking in flavor. Also, the fish sauce was super watered down. The only thing that was decent was the sweet and sour soup with catfish. I really wanted to like this place because it's one of a few asian restarants in town. Abysmal Vietnamese food (if you can even call it that). My husband and I had high hopes for Pho Chau given the reviews on Yelp and the fact that the joint was jumping when we visited for lunch. Browsing the menu, we were really excited to see such a large range of Vietnamese dishes, more than just your standard noodle bowls and pho, and figured that this place was the real deal. I ordered a grilled beef & spring roll noodle bowl, while my husband ordered the mixed rice plate. When our waiter brought our food out, we were both so excited: it looked wonderful! However, as soon as we took our first bites, the spell was ruined. The food was largely bland and flavorless, and a few key elements in our dishes tasted just plain wrong. My grilled beef was also tough and dry, like shoe leather, and my husband's egg on his rice plate was overcooked. My spring roll was filled with cabbage and tasted much more like a Chinese egg roll rather than a Vietnamese-style roll should taste, and the meat was also marinated in something that tasted more like something I would have been served in China than Vietnam. (And my husband and I spent a month traveling in China and 5 months traveling in Vietnam, so we know the difference!) Additionally, the cold tea that you find all over Vietnam was absolutely disgusting--bitter and clearly from a powder rather than fresh brewed tea. I wonder if the people who run Pho Chau are actually Vietnamese? I have to think that they are not, but if so, they have done themselves a disservice by modifying their dishes so greatly for undiscerning Western palates. Although the menu is extensive and largely authentic in terms of the dishes included (tthings like crab rangoon and Pad Thai are, obviously, not VIetnamese...), the flavors are just wrong, and even more unfortunately, just not very pleasing. I hate to write negative reviews like this, but I'd hate even more for someone to think that the food at Pho Chau is what Vietnamese food is like at all. The positives here are that the staff are very friendly and welcoming, and the prices are really pretty good... but the food is just unforgivable that I would never go back and can't in good conscience recommend anyone else visit. read more

Heads above Pho Tai in terms of taste and freshness of the food they prepare. The owner/employees are also very nice and accommodating. Pho - I'm a huge fan of Pho, and they make it very well here. The broth is well-seasoned, and they include a lot of meat and noodles in it. My only complaint is the lack of cilantro - ask for a lot if you like cilantro like I do. Curry chicken - This dish is unbelievable. Pho is my favorite food in general, but when a friend ordered this and gave me a bite, that was all I wanted. The chicken is so soft and tender, and the sauce is just amazingly delicious. Without a doubt what I'll be ordering next time I'm there. Clay pot - Have never had it, but two friends ordered it and devoured it in minutes. They both thought it was great. I've also heard great things about the fish from a friend, but again, haven't tried them as I'm not a fan of fish. Typical bill is usually about $10/person including tip for just an entree. Figure around $12-13/person if you want a drink/appetizer, which still, is extremely reasonable. read more

Pho (#15 special como or pho tai) is both authentic and delicious. I'm a big Pho fan and regularly eat at the most authentic places in both northern and southern California. I would put their pho up against pretty much anybody in the business. The restaurant location is a bit tricky. I stayed at the Double Tree Hotel, and it's only a short .8 mile from the restaurant. Walking over from the hotel turned out to be a small adventure as the shops were mostly closed, and it's a bit run down for an out of towner at night. I did call for a hotel limo to pick me up on the return trip, thanks to a very nice hotel customer service offered by double tree. I would definitely recommend people who enjoys authentic Vietnamese pho. I certainly did. read more

No-frills decor more than made up for by the pleasant, helpful staff, massive portions, reasonable prices, and of course the food, food, FOOD FOOD! I've never had a bad meal here, but a few items stand out as "must try" / spectacular: Spring rolls Combination Fried Rice Vietnamese Crepe All of the Pho soup And I guess it isn't strictly speaking Vietnamese but they have a really unique and delicious take on the Pad Thai dish as well. Don't be afraid to dump that fish sauce on everything! The gal running the show here is also a treat. Always nice to be recognized by voice alone when you call for takeout or be greeted by name when you walk in the door. Very rare to find that kind of personal attention anymore. Despite its name, you shouldn't visit Pho Chau for its pho alone. The portions are large, but what's the point when it doesn't taste good to begin with? The broth was truly lacking in flavor and missing the taste of what you would expect in pho broth. You will be disappointed if you're looking to satisfy your pho craving. Other dishes like their rice dishes are notably better. Their spring rolls are also pretty good for the area, although there are slim pickings when it comes to good Asian food in Rochester. Really enjoyed getting take-out from here! I actually read the reviews and got beef lemongrass vermicelli, spring rolls, and chicken ginger curry. The portion sizes are huge and so flavorful. I didn't try the pad thai, as this restaurant is Vietnamese, but I hear it's good. There seem to be a lot of raves over the Vietnamese crepe and pork dishes. Highly recommend, especially for takeout. The hostess, a middle aged short hair woman, was rude to me. The restaurant opened until 9pm, I walked in at 8:30 and they said it was too late for sit down meals. Then she told me to order pho but not any of the other dishes. Not recommended, but told me "order this". It was a mistake to listen to her! Their specialty pho literally had 3 dried up slices of meat (see picture). The broth was kinda bland, the herbs were all bruised and dried up. The whole thing tasted like instant pho! Prices Have Increased Dramatically I've been coming here for a number of years. It had been a few months since I was last here. I'm not sure what happened, but all of the menu items increased by 1/3 to 1/2. The spring rolls were about $3.00, now they're nearly $5.00. The soups, fried rice, entrees, etc., all increased substantially. I know ownership has changed hands, but a menu-wide price hike is unreasonable and not warranted. If anything, the prices should have gone down. The restaurant replaced the elegant glass water glasses with plastic Pepsi glasses -- nothing says authentic like Pepsi. I'll start looking for another place to go when I'm in Rochester. read more

There is a reason Pho Chau is considered the best pho in Rochester - they provide a reasonably good pho (and other dishes) at fantastic portion sizes that make it a great value. Their 'pho dac biet' (they call it pho chau, I believe) is one of the better I've had with plenty of protein and noodles in a gigantic bowl of broth. In terms of taste, the broth is a little on the mild side and not nearly as complex as their other competitor in town. However, what they lack in taste is made up by very quick service despite being on the busiest Asian restaurants in town.
