Pho Chau is my favorite place to eat in Rochester. This is some really authentic Vietnamese food. Everything here is so flavorful, and my favorite part is that the food can get very spicy! For example, the Bo Kho here is so good. The broth was delicious, and I loved adding the chili crisp/oil provided at the table. The beef was very tender, and the noodles were perfectly chewy too. I got a side of the Fresh Spring Rolls with Shrimp, which were also delicious and paired well with the spicy broth. The menu is quite diverse and has non-noodle/spicy dishes too, including vegetarian options. The service was very quick and the staff were all very friendly. There were plenty of tables too, and this restaurant would be particularly great for large groups. Definitely come and visit Pho Chau!

This place is a little out of the way, but it feels like a hidden gem in Roch. The staff is quiet, knowledgeable, and helpful. I thought the pho tai broth had depth and was fatty with being greazy. This was a quick in and out visit, so I didn't try anything else, but I will definitely be back to try other menu items. Their chili oil was excellent!

No frills pho place with good soup base. Casual dining with fast service. For most the dishes you choose the style and then add the protein which is extra. It's a little pricier than other places - but given the location in Rochester I would say a premium is not unwarranted. Solid food. I'd go back again. Boba teas are also pretty good.

Pho Chau is amazing. The service is beyond fantastic. The food is on point. I love how the pho broth is a little fatty. Most restaurants skin the access fat from the bone and the broth just becomes too clean for me lol Their Springrolls are different from what I'm used to, but it's still good. I love their Chicago fried rice. Something about it is just... so delicious. I highly recommend arriving early as they do get busy quickly.

The service can be better. I dont like when they give the bill on the table as soon as the foods is out. The chicken broth pho is not too tasty. My cousin said the beef pho is better. I will give it a try next time. The Vietnamese coffee is good and have good taste of the coffee (not just sweetness). Ambiance of the restaurant is okay. I m not too fond of it

Pho Chau is not too bad, especially if you're looking for a fix on Vietnamese food. However, with proximity to Pho Tai and other Asian dineries, it is more of a backup restaurant. Menu is not quite as extensive and is pretty overwhelming from a price perspective. A bowl of Pho will run you like $14-15 which is about 20% more than other places. The rice platter (3.5/5) ordered was not as traditional. The rice was not broken, the meat was drenched with food coloring, and the lack of meat loaf and few other items made it disappointing. Wife was feeling Pad Thai (3/5), and this version was really oily. The use of fish sauce was nice, but a little more overpowering than others Overall, Pho Chau is not too bad, but prices and alternatives make it challenging to re-visit.

This review marks my 500th in 2021. It's fitting that I write about a Vietnamese restaurant in Rochester, a city that I called my home for two years. Back when I was a resident, there weren't any Vietnamese eateries in Rochester. I couldn't get a bowl of pho. I resorted to either making my own or heading up to the Twin Cities to get my fix. Just before the pandemic started, I visited Kung Fu Tea and noticed Pho Chau next door. I bookmarked it. On Christmas Eve, I was driving up from Elma, Iowa, and needed lunch. I remembered Pho Chau and drove over here. There is parking in front of this restaurant. There is also more parking around the eatery. I parked closest to N. Broadway Avenue and walked in. A woman was prompt greeting me. She got me a menu and guided me to a booth. It was just before 3 pm and I was hungry. I got the following items: - Fried chicken dumplings - Beef and meatball pho (#17 on the menu) My food came out fairly fast. Both items were brought to my table at the same time. I practically inhaled all six fried chicken dumplings. I was so hungry. These dumplings were great. Each one had plenty of filling. The wrapper on each was thin and crispy. The dipping sauce was yummy. The dumplings were so flavourful. I'd get them again. The pho comes in one size. I got a huge bowl of comfort placed in front of me. I added the bean sprouts and cilantro into my pho, and squeezed the lime. The broth was excellent. It was authentic and so good that the broth scent stayed on my clothes for a while. The beef was tender and didn't require much effort to eat. The meatballs were hearty. The noodles were perfect. I loved it. The removal of a star in my rating was abruptly getting my bill from this woman without being asked if I wanted anything else. She dictated that I was done. Weird. Part of me wanted the che 3 mau, but I decided to now skip it and revisit Kung Fu Tea instead. I went up to the counter to pay for my food with a credit card. I tipped and paid. All done! I used the women's washroom before making the hour drive up to Eagan. It's a single stall and was clean. I'd return again. If I do want the che 3 mau next time, I'll need to order it with the rest of my meal before I automatically get the bill. (500)

Great food at great prices. The place is nicely appointed. Nice atmosphere is always busy. The service is prompt. My only problem is that everything ends up tasting the same. There aren't any distinct flavors regardless of what dish you order. They are all cooked well and the portions are huge. But it gets boring after a few visits. read more

There is a reason Pho Chau is considered the best pho in Rochester - they provide a reasonably good pho (and other dishes) at fantastic portion sizes that make it a great value. Their 'pho dac biet' (they call it pho chau, I believe) is one of the better I've had with plenty of protein and noodles in a gigantic bowl of broth. In terms of taste, the broth is a little on the mild side and not nearly as complex as their other competitor in town. However, what they lack in taste is made up by very quick service despite being on the busiest Asian restaurants in town. The dining hall is very cramped and have been full the past three of my visits. I can also highly recommend their 'che 3 mau', which is a sweet dessert drink with coconut milk. read more

This is THE best in town. Really good food! The soups are amazing and the spring rolls are to die for. I took my mom and we ordered a little of a lot of different foods. We didn't have one item that wasn't good. A single order is enough for two meals so go hungry. The only reason they didn't get a 5 star is because they didn't offer beer or wine. One last thing our server Jennifer was the best. Jennifer took the time to answer all of our questions. She recommended some items and was spot on. Yummy yummy yummy. Been here twice with my gf and tried a total of 4 different dishes and 6 appetizers. So far the food has been bland, not quite as flavorful as I've had at other restaurants. The crab cakes were dripping in grease, crab Rangoon were good and crisp. Price is good, but their tax is way off. Cost of meal was around $32 and my tax was a bit over $3. Our first time there we had decent service. However, our second time there not so good. Our main entrees came before our appetizers, and had to ask the male waiter/cashier twice for to go boxes (it wasn't busy). Didn't even bother to ask if we needed a bag even though we had 4 to go boxes. read more

Only thing I usually say is.... WOW. It satisfies the craving every time, with a bulls-eye. Great, friendly service with fantastic food at a great price. We usually always order 1-2 extra dishes over the number of people we have and share family style. Its a good way to explore the menu and typically its hard to decide what to get because everything is so good. Sharing solves that problem & you're always happy the next day if you happen to have leftovers, which you probably will. Get the BBQ pork in any dish you can. They'll even sub it in some dishes that are just marked "pork." Here's the rundown of some usual dishes: - Crab Rangoon appetizer - Grilled/Marinated Beef appetizer - #28 (chicken soup with BBQ pork/shirmp/rice noodle) - #68 (lemongrass chicken - my wife's usual) - #77 (spicy green beens) - #85 (BBQ pork fried rice - my usual) - #91 (BBQ pork chop) - #118 (chow fun noodle stir fry - sub BBQ pork) - pad thai (sub BBQ pork) Go and you will go back. read more

About 2 miles from Mayo Clinic. Easy to find. Looks small from outside but lots of seats inside. We arrived hungry for late lunch Sunday afternoon. Place was packed. We waited about 5 minutes for seating. But service was quick and attentive. Good size menu. We loved our egg noodles pho we ordered. Prices are just right. Their pho's are tasty in big bowl. We would love to return to test other items on their menu. read more

Authentic southern Vietnamese food. Friendly flexible staff We have eaten here twice during our one week stay in Rochester. We have spent time in Vietnam and have taken a number of cooking classes there. This restaraunt was a large menu, but was able to do a masterful job on a variety of items on their list. Because they are in Rochester, they tend to serve the dishes with a bit less spicing but there is authentic fish sauce on the table and they are happy to adjust the spicing as long as they know that it will not overwhelm you. The peanut sauce is plentiful and excellent. The Vietnamese spring rolls are not fried. This makes them fresher and healthier than Chnese spring rolls. They are filled with shrimp, crunchy mung bean sprouts and other vegetables. Normally these rolls are contain both pork and shrimp but we asked them to make ours without pork. The kitchen was also very good about making sure that one of our party got gluten-free food. The Banh Xeo, a crepe with shrimp and vegetables rivaled any I have eaten in Hue. I have cooked this and know that it is not easy to make this well. The clay pot beef dish needed some extra fish sauce to spice it to my liking, but it had the crunchy rice bits that makes a Vietnamese hot pot so good. They had a number of pho soup dishes. It is possible to get the pho with ingredients familiar to Americans but one can also get tripe and tendon. (better than it sounds.) The chicken curry noodle soup was superb with a rich complex spicing. The pho is served in a huge bowl along with a side plate with a large heap of bean sprouts and a generous amount of real fresh thai basil. One our second visit, the staff remembered us and our preferences. They did get one dish wrong, serving us chicken instead of beef. They offered to get us the correct dish, but we told them that we were fine with either item, we ate the chicken. When we got the bill, they had given us a discount because of this although we had not asked for it. read more

We order pho and spring rolls among other yummy faves for takeaway often. Love their food . My gripe is that they use styrofoam containers & in a time of great environmental concern, this is not at all earth friendly. Ordered the spring rolls, pho, and rice in clay pot. All were very good. Serving sizes are generous as well. The restaurant is under construction but they do a nice job of keeping the area separate. Service was also very good but when the spring rolls first came out of kitchen the woman working the cash register wanted to take pictures. She was taking a lot of pictures and a lot of time. Luckily our server hurried her along. It wasn't like they were hot (and therefore getting cold) but after a bit I did find it strange and somewhat irritating. read more

The wife and I were not extremely hungry so we had egg rolls, spring rolls, and some kind of appetizer described as "fried stuff with shrimp" or something very similar. Egg rolls were NOT Vietnamese style, they were some nasty Chinese ones with "sweet and sour" (really should be called "sickening sweet") sauce. A place named "Pho" anything should call out if it's not serving Vietnamese stuff. The spring roll was so-so. Too much lettuce, not enough of anything aromatic. The "fried stuff with shrimp" was ... strange enough I'm not sure I can comment meaningfully. It was like some kind of deep-fried shrimp muffin. At least it came with fish sauce. It was the best thing we had. The water was okay. I'll go to Roscoe's next time I'm in Rochester and save the Vietnamese for when I'm back in the Twin Cities. read more

Early Lunch, A table for 2 ATMOSPHERE: Clean. Good size dining area. Typical Vietnamese cafe style set up. SERVICE: Pretty good. They frequently came by to see if we were doing okay and our drinks were filled appropriately timed. FOOD: Fresh and Good but not the best we've had. Husband got the pho, as usual. He liked it but it was not outstanding. I ordered the won ton egg noodle soup. It was tasty but a little salty. Not enough egg noodles provided though. We also ordered ice coffee and eggrolls. The coffee was nice - not too strong. The eggrolls were okay. We also got the shredded pork rolls...which are spring rolls with shredded pork inside. They were a bit dry but that's the nature of the shredded pork. OVERALL: Great place to stop in for lunch. Considering the lack of options in this area...this place isn't bad. read more

Once we did manage to get someone to take our order, they were very helpful in deciphering the menu, and had great suggestions on what to order. The spring rolls and the crab rangoons are a MUST! I'm not a fan of cilantro, but my mother is and she said the spring rolls were amazing. I tried a bit and they were really great until the cilantro kicked in. I had the crab rangoons and they were amazing! I could have eaten just those and been totally satisfied! Yum! After that my mom got the beef Pho and I got the shrimp lo mien. It came out surprisingly fast and it was the perfect temperature. Chou, the owner remembers everyones name, and welcomes you into her restaurant when you come. It's worth the experience. Next if you are up for it, try the Pho Soup, it is a flavor filled meal in itself that can fill you up not once, but for a couple meals if you are not careful.
