The food was alright. Nothing spectacular. I am going to say I've had better Vietnamese in Houston... a place far from Vietnam...

The atmosphere was spartan, sketchy even at times, but the food always more than compensated for that. Fast forward to my life as an expat in Manila and it's been a long journey to find a good bowl of pho. The mall chains kill the craving but never really satisfy. I thought I wouldn't ever find a spot to fill the pho-shaped hole in my heart until I randomly decided to try this spot after Mass in Greenbelt. The place looked super hip and colorful, almost like it was trying too hard. I was a little worried but I'm glad I went with my gut (literally) and came in for some Vietnamese goodness. I ordered iced ginger and lemongrass tea (₱90) to go along with my bowl of beef pho (₱450). Yes, the prices are a bit steep but they are totally worth how high quality and fresh the ingredients were. The tea packed a real punch and didn't seem watered down at all. The pho was amazing. Normally I taste the broth before adding any hoisin or sriracha to see if it can stand on its on. The broth here definitely could. There was also a generous serving of noodles, garnish, beef, and fresh herbs. My only gripe was that the noodles were a tad harder than I was used to but it still didn't ruin the meal. Service was attentive though it took awhile for me to get my bill. It was understandable though given how busy the restaurant was. Can't wait to go again!

We ended up going to this restaurant after searching for a good bowl of Vietnamese noodle soup in Manila and ended up choosing Pho bon due to location and pictures from Yelp. As we entered during lunch the place was fairly crowded but still managed to find a seat. The restaurant serves up bowls of pho, rice dishes, and even has Vietnamese Sandwiches. I ended up getting the pho with well done brisket and since I was super hungry that day I also chose the banh Mi bo kho which was Vietnamese beef stew with French bread. The food came out quick and was looking esquisite! The Pho was beautifully garnished with thinly sliced green onions, cilantro, and sliced white onions with slices of fatty brisket laying over a bed of wide pho noodles. The freshly cracked ground pepper aroma coming up below the piping hot broth got me really excited to try this Vietnamese dish while eating it in the Phillipines. I was also accomodated with fresh herbs of Thai basil, Corriander, and thin bean sprouts and a side dish of chili and hoison sauce with limes. The soup was light in broth but yet flavorful but I felt it was lacking in the fresh herbs and spices such as the star anise, cloves, cinnamon, and ginger. The noodles were cooked al dente and I enjoyed chewing on them while slurping the broth. The banh mi bo kho was also another great dish to eat while dipping the fresh Vietnamese French bread into the soup with the nice cuts of stewed beef and vegetables. The flavor was yet light but also had a great taste and I really enjoyed this dish as well. Overall great expierence eating here while the food was on point but yet had its differences but also tasty. Customer service was great and the prices were very affordable for famiy dining or just eating with a friend. I totally reccomend this place to anyone looking to eat Vietnamese food in PI while traveling here.

Choose from a variety of meats ranging from pork, beef or chicken. The more traditional pate is also available (my personal fave)! The sandwich begins with a crispy, crusty baguette, which they bake themselves, filled with your choice of meat. Then, they top it with shredded carrot, cucumber, cilantro, basil and pickled radish. The ingredients are ALWAYS fresh and the result is a very tasty sandwich! Tip: don't get the half size; get the full size! If it's your first time, try the large traditional banh mi. The large order is only Php99! They also offer Vietnamese coffee or Artichoke Iced Tea to go with your meal. If you're craving for a good bahn mi sandwich, visit this quiet little shop in San Antonio Village. Great place to grab take out and enjoy in the comfort of your home. :)

Since is again very near Carlo's house, this is my go to place for Pho. Plus points eating here are the big servings at very affordable prices. The place is a house turned into restaurant which is now quite common in San Antonio Village. You have the option of sitting indoors or stay outdoors where you can smell them grilling pork for the Pho. On rare occasions, the owner will play her favorite Vietnamese songs in the restaurant. I always go for their Pho Bo Nam (Well Done Beef Brisket noodles) and it's only Php185. The meat was tender and the broth was light yet very flavorful. With the Pho, you get the bean sprouts, white onions and coriander plus the Sriracha! I've also tried their Bánh mì. It's actually pretty good but, sometimes, their bread is not crunchy which is an essential factor when eating a Bánh mì. You must try their Vietnamese drip coffee. It is quite strong and will really wake you up! Also, It comes with cold tea which is the traditional way it is served in Vietnam. If you're in the area, definitely try this place out! :)

But it was so distracting because the staff with their manager was so noisy. Shouting, laughing, talking about their personal stories that everyone of us could hear! I remember their faces because I think the management did not replace them. One staff with a loud voice saying " wala na taong tongue, lemon and sili" which sounded very frustrating to me. Great food bad staff. I wrote the same on their comment slip. Maybe I'll just order take out next time.

Since then I've always thought I had to fly all the way there just to get the best coffee! Thankfully, DiCofi exists! I kept my expectations low when I decided to try DiCofi last night...But WOW. Their iced coffee is AMAZING. It's the closest one to the best cup I've had in one of the provinces of South Vietnam, and it's worth mentioning that it was better than those numerous cups I've had in Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi. Dicofi's ca phe comes in this paper cup with this cute and goofy coffee mascot. I was really having a crummy day and this cup of coffee repaired it! The Vietnamese owners are super friendly and accommodating, too. One of the owners was so amused at how I took my coffee black and without the sua (milk), because "girls don't usually drink their coffee black, it's too strong!" (LOL). But since I'm vegan and I don't consume dairy, I've learned to enjoy coffee in its own and with just sugar. I would've given this place 5 stars if they had something vegan to eat. However, I don't think they have Banh Mi that can be made vegan (But they do have a vegetarian option that's free of meat, you just have to request for it). But really, I don't mind not eating as I'm really happy with just the coffee. Oh and they have fruit smoothies, too!

As proof for this foodie, I think I've eaten here a few dozen times, even though I haven't lived in Manila for over 10 years. Run by a competent friendly pinay Jane and other supervisors, on the 2nd or mezzanine floor overlooking the main atrium of this large mall, Pho Bao is really well worth your well-spent cash. Their Vietnamese pho soups and Thai/Viet stews are really good with flavour ingrained in the broth, with quality noodles, lots of tasty tender beef, fresh basil leaves, and competent service. You will leave filled. The prices have edged up over time, but that is standard in much of the food industry all over the world. What's very interesting is that Pho Bao is better than most of the Vietnamese restos in one Canadian province: after checking out and eating in about 20 Viet venues in Calgary (1.3 million people), we only found one to be exemplary (Pure Contemporary Vietnamese Kitchen), only one other to be good, and the rest just playing games with ignorant westerners. In fact, if you want better in the Phils, likely one has to go to Troi Oi in Iloilo City (not hard for a google maps and a taxi to find). Thus, given too many imposters who don't care, it may be a fair assumption to say that it's rare to find a truly great Vietnamese restaurant in any 'foreign' country. So come to Pho Bao for some good nourishment as one of the best casual little restaurants in the country. I don't think you will be disappointed. Just inside the main entrance off Pedro Gil, walk past the competition to this simple place on the 2nd floor and enjoy?
