The Thai tea was canned, it was delicious, but I was surprised that they did not make it homemade. The spicy garlic shrimp were out of this world!!! Ordered two Banh mi (grilled pork) sandwiches to go and overall it was ok. The French roll was crisp and tasty, the grilled pork had good flavor but chewy, and the sliced cucumbers and radish were good. No knock on this sandwich but I've had better. Pho Kim Anh is located in a small plaza which hosts restaurants such as 808 Grindz. My suggestion is to slice the radish a little thinner as well as the cucumbers and let them stand in a sweet vinegar sauce or a few hours. I don't have any suggestions about the chewiness of the pork. read more

Stopped by for an early dinner, and we were the only ones at Pho Kim Anh. We ordered the shrimp goi cuon, a bun bowl, and a pho with no meat. The goi cuon were pretty standard but don't come with mint. The peanut dipping sauce was fine but didn't have the typical crushed peanuts on top. The bun bowl was good, but the pho with no meat was definitely on the smaller side. Interior is relatively clean and spacious. The restaurant started filling up as the evening went on. read more

Couldn't tell you about it but we watched several tables that came in after us get their food; looked amazing. They had beef rib pho', 2 orders of egg rolls, and a couple of other plates. We also saw several to go orders being packaged as we sat there waiting and being asked three times what we'd ordered. It wasn't a difficult order. Egg rolls, chicken pho', banh mi and a coke. To be clear, our kids were well-behaved one was even sleeping but the staff kept staring at us throughout the meal, making us feel uncomfortable. First time on the island and was in the area and wanted to see how good their pho was. Whenever I visit a new place or city on vacation, I like to gauge what their pho is like. The reviews were mixed from what I read so I wanted to try it out this place. After trying it out, I can tell you that I've had better. The broth felt a bit underwhelming and a bit sweeter than normal. Didn't really get any herbal notes so they must not put a lot of aromatics like star anise, cloves, cinnamon, or cardamon. If they did it did not certainly have any from what I tried. I did enjoy the noodles, they were not overcooked, it was just right. One of the factors that took it down was the environment, it was a small hole in the wall place. Now granted with hole in the wall places, I don't expect the decor to be much but when I am eating pho, having flies buzzing around and landing on me and my food is really annoying. I usually get takeout. It's good pho at a better price than a similar spot across the street. I will say I was frustrated that when I was given the iPad to pay (actually, it rotated from a mount by the register), there was no option for NO tip. I tried to get out of the tip but it wouldn't let me. I struggled with it for a bit then relinquished and tipped just to get out of there. I think it's ridiculous that they bully you into tipping for takeout without an option for No tip.. I didn't take up your table, dirty your dishes, or require service from your server so do I get a discount on my order? If not, don't expect a tip! The food is 5/5. The service is usually spot on but this new tip screen for takeout has made me reluctant to return. I give it a 1/5 for that reason. The ambiance is also not very inviting. It feels cramped and uninviting. I give it a 2/5. Overall, I have to downgrade my previous rating from 5 to a 3.5/5. read more

As soon as we came in and picked up a high chair for my one year old he yelled at us to move it away from the aisle which is the only spot to place it since the tables are so close together. He came to take our order and we needed time to look at the menu- he came back three more times with 2 minutes in between which felt rushed. I ordered a Thai tea and it came in a can with 50 grams of sugar... he took my husband's order and then pointed In my face to imply what I wanted instead of asking me. Extremely disrespectful. Comparing this location to its sister in Waimea is like comparing Drew Carey and Bob Barker. The price may be right but they are very different flavors and one is definitely better than the other. In case you are wondering, their sister store is the Bob Barker in this scenario. It's just better all the way around. You walk in, everything is clean, workers are on it, and their pho is so delicious you want to drink every last drop. This location is kind of dirty, service was meh, and the pho just wasn't as good. It was okayyy, but my meat was a little tough and the broth wasn't as flavorful. It didn't make me want to drink it, like I do at their other location. Ordered oxtail pho, egg rolls, an iced tea and a vietnamese iced coffee. We were brought 2 waters in chewed up looking cups, a tall can of iced tea, and a plate of egg rolls. Server told me she was going to bring me my coffee when it was ready. I thought, fair enough, and waited. Didn't drink the water in the chewed up glasses that sat on our table; figured I had a warm bottle of water with me, I'd drink that if I wanted water. Five or so mintutes passed and they placed a plate of eggrolls and a plate of veggies on the table. Eggrolls were gone almost as fast as they were served. Another few minutes passed and our server brought out our pho. Still waiting for my drink, I started mixing the sauce into my broth and loading the veggies on it so I could take a picture that looked all pretty and stuff. Still no iced coffee. Server walks by like she's about to tell us something important, places her hand on our table and says, "eggrolls are coming out shortly" and disappears into the restroom, which we were seated beside.. I'm confused and staring at my favorite lunch partner with jealousy as he slurps down his icy beverage. I unscrew the cap of my warm bottled water and choke it down. 'Sure wish I had something cold to drink,' I'm thinking as I eat my steaming pho. The server is still in the restroom. I'm still puzzled about the eggrolls. My brain starts creating imagery that no brain should create when you are trying to eat. I'm trying to shut it out by focusing on my food and our conversation but my imagination is running wild as I'm thinking about eggrolls and the server who is still in the restroom. I'm also simultaneously thinking about the ghostly iced coffee that I wished was real. Server emerges from the restroom twenty minutes later, just as we were finishing our noodles. and my hubby stops her to ask if we could make a take out order. She writes it up and runs off, then comes back and finally remembers to ask me, "do you still want your coffee?" My food is gone. I've finished most of my warm bottled water. "No. I answer, I don't want a coffee anymore." "Oh. Well I did make your coffee several times," she says. I'm losing it, thinking, 'when? You literally left the bathroom like a minute ago! Did you make it along with the eggrolls?' So to answer your question: this place is okay. Not the best pho imho, sister store in Waimea is MUCH MUCH better. Terrific food! My wife and I have lived and traveled throughout Asia for many years. While vacationing in Kona, we carefully researched where to dine and our homework really paid off with Pho Kim Anh. Conveniently located in a newer shopping center off Ali'i Ave. near the center of town, the restaurant is moderately sized with welcoming décor. Service is prompt and friendly. The menu is broad with many reasonably priced selections (a pleasant surprise in Hawaii). We ate at this restaurant several times during our stay. As serious foodies, we found the freshness and seasoning of our dishes to be unusually good. From the appetizers to the soups and entrées, each dish was thoughtfully prepared, nicely presented, and exceptionally tasty. For fans of Vietnamese food or for visitors seeking something deliciously different, we can highly recommend Pho Kim Anh. read more

Not the worst pho I've had, but also not the best. Also, they didn't have a veggie pho option so I had no choice but to get the shrimp pho (they didn't have that on the menu either... I had to ask). I normally like to stick to a vegetarian diet but when traveling that can be tougher. It was around 2 pm and other nearby restaurants were closed until 5, so options were limited. Also, I brought in my Starbucks drink because I didn't want to leave it in the hot car. I barely got through it, and after noticing I had left it in the restaurant a minute after I walked out, I ran back in to grab it. The lady in front said they already threw it away. They could have held my drink for even 5 minutes to see if I would come back for it, seeing as how I barely touched it. They have really good pho I like ordering #7 pho comes with all the meat. I don't reccomend ordering the banh mi it doesn't have that much cucumber dikon, and the Kalbi and rice plate only had four pieces of Kalbi for the prices I would rather order the pho for more food. And so far, my first experience is superb! It's chilly and pouring rain so we agreed to grab some pho. But deep inside I'm skeptical, I don't know what to expect. Upon arriving we were greeted and guided to our table for four. I am shivering and just want anything to warm me up. I'm not hungry at all coz an hour before coming here we just have early dinner. But a pho is a must at this time. Food: Pho Tai, Nam Gan ($12) eye round steak, flank & soft tendon - glad I ordered this! It was so good and the broth is savory sweet. The bean sprout, spring onion and onion create a contrast in texture and give the dish some crunch. Tried squeezing the lemon as well and boy my tastebuds was delighted from the tangy sweetness flavor. The bowl may look unembellished but the moment you start dig in, you don't wanna stop. The meat is cooked right and the soft tendon adds the flavor and happiness in the bowl. Customer service is okay. I will surely recommend this gem to try out their menu. I can't really blame them for my low rating review. It's hard to obtain the usual Vietnamese herbs and spices to put together a great bowl of pho. Plus, I may be partially biased as I live near Little Saigon in California. Too much broth and too little meat is my basic generalization. See photos as demonstrations. Spring Rolls - they really pack it with noodles and little skimpy shrimps. We pulled all the noodles out of one roll and it was enough to make a portion of Bun Rieu. read more

I was craving some vermicelli noodle salad and found it here! Great location - away from alii drive but right in town and a parking lot with ample parking. It is air conditioned with bar seating and table seating. I think since they are new the service isn't the best, but they're nice. They have a big tv screen that says top 100 songs so I'm not sure if it turns into a karaoke bar later in the night. On that note there is a decent selection of standard beers and wine. I decided to get the lemongrass beef vermicelli noodles and it was good. I asked for chili sauce, but it's not spicy. I think it's the one from the jar at the store which it looks like it and I know that one isn't spicy. Flavor was good - I came back a second time to get it. Fortunately and unfortunately, this is the only Vietnamese restaurant in Kona. Fortunately, because at least there is one! Unfortunately, is because there is no competition.... In general the food at this restaurant is pretty good. However, there is always room for improvement. For instance, their credit card machine is on the fritz. Sometimes it works and other times it does not, and worse yet, if you try a charge and it looks like it does not go through, then you pay by cash only to find that later the charge actually did go through! This is a tough one as they just need to get it fixed. The other thing that happens occasionally is that for take out orders, sometimes there are no vegetables or sauce! Mis-packs can always happen but it shouldn't happen frequently. Note that they were struggling with getting employees and there has been turnover too. In all, we like the food and the pho is pretty spot on. The portions are not large and the pricing is increasing. It would be so much better if they could get a stable set of employees and if they fixed these issues. Otherwise, it's a long drive to Hilo for Vietnamese food! read more

This place has a bit of an odd setup for a Vietnamese restaurant. It feels like they took over a former diner and didn't renovate the place. There's a open kitchen area that's a bit of a mess with a bar dining area, and a number of tables sitting between two to four people that takes up much of the space. The tables have white linen and a clear tabletop shielding the linen, making for easier cleanup after each meal. This style is the sort of thing you'd find in more upscale eateries, but everything is really cramped and the juxtaposition of the nice tables and the disorganized kitchen area is a bit jarring. I wasn't sure what to expect. I found myself here on Christmas day after attempting to eat at two other spots that were closed. My mom wanted Vietnamese food and of course, Asian places tend to be open of Christmas. This was the only game in town and we went. Happily, the food was delicious! Coming from San Jose, which has the most Vietnamese people in any city outside Vietnam, we were not expecting the food here to meet our expectations. In fact, the food exceeded them. Options are somewhat limited, but what they do, they do well. My mom ordered phở and I ordered the bún thịt nướng (grilled pork vermicelli dish). The meats were perfectly seasoned and cooked. The fish sauce was tangy and perfect. My mom and I were satiated and satisfied. My mom liked the place so much she even asked for a business card, to recommend people come here. The owners are a Vietnamese man and Chinese woman who own a series of restaurants. Very nice people. I wish I could find these flavors in San Jose. I thought this was a solid Pho place. We had a craving while vacationing in Kona and found this on Yelp. Service was quick. The Pho Bo Vien was delicious and broth was very flavorful. It was pricey for the one size of pho they have (which I would say was a medium sized bowl), but it is in a tourist town so I didn't even blink an eye. Easy to find in a shopping plaza and best of all there is free parking! read more
