I'm giving it four stars because it's in Delaware. Near a spot on Route 40 where the road expands to SIX eastbound lanes (including turning). People must really clamor for expedited access to strip malls. I had a bit of trouble finding this place. Burger King occupies the "prime" location in this mall (read: blocking everything else). Also within view are Bob Evans, Ruby Tuesdays, McDonald's, Chick-Fil-A, Papa John's, Taco Bell and Wendy's. If you're totally convinced of the country's moral obligation to insure its citizens, this depressing black hole of fast food will shake your faith. It's totally garish, but Delaware seems determined to press on until the entire state is contained within a giant box store. I have no idea why the proprietors of Pho Nhu Vu set up shop here. Clearly, a salad that was assembled in Tuscon two days ago is good enough for most of the people who live here. Still, they turn out a pretty nice product (three stars in DC or even NYC). The broth is fairly rich in flavor. The tendon wasn't quite firm enough, but the meat was generally OK. Nice to have Chinese basil. It's too much to expect in Delaware, but the broth might be a bit more complex. I had a "drink" involving beans and coconut. The restaurant should invest in wide straws. Cha gio was great, cooked well but not soaked in oil. Taste was great, sauce well made. Spicy seafood has great broth with enough spice to have flavor but not overpower the other elements of the broth. Bun Cha Gio well made, noodles firm and tasty without getting soggy or clumpy. This place was such a disappointment. I can't say a good thing about this restaurant, and it's clear that they cater to a crowd that is either unfamiliar with Vietnamese food, or so desperate for it, that they are happy to have anything they can get. We came here with a group so I got to try several dishes including the nem nuong spring rolls, the combination pho, grilled pork with rice, and bun bo hue along with iced coffee. The nem nuong spring rolls were anemic, having only a single strip of lettuce and no herbs inside. It was mostly filled with rice noodles and the nem nuong was the worst I have ever tasted. Plus you only get two roll for almost $5, and there's barely any meat or vegetables in the spring roll to justify the cost. The pho was terrible. I know a pho restaurant has bad broth when I need to use sriracha AND hoisin just to make it edible. Even with a lot of extra sauce, the pho was inedible. The broth barely had any beef flavor to it, and there was almost no flavor from the spices. There was barely any meat in the bowl and what was there was cut very thinly, as to maximize the profit. The bean sprouts that were given to us were turning brown, and there was barely any basil on the side. This ended up not being an issue since the pho broth was beyond help, but it looked particularly stingy as we were waiting for our food. The bun bo hue was just embarrassing, and this restaurant should be ashamed to misrepresent the dish. Adding tom yum soup paste to pho broth and adding some slivers of onion to the bowl does not make it bun bo hue. It's a completely different broth, even if it is beef based. The grilled pork with rice was the best of what we ordered, but that's not really saying much. First of all, they didn't even serve broken rice, it was just typical short-grain rice, which is a minor complaint. The meat was under-flavored and cut as thinly as possible to give the illusion that you were getting more meat than you ordered. The fish sauce was weak, and the pickled vegetables were barely pickled. All you got was a small pile of carrot slices that had the slightest hint of sourness, but no radish. There was nothing egregious about this dish, but it's not something I'd order again. The iced coffee was weak and bitter, and one of the worst I've ever had. it lacked the richness that it's supposed to have, which happens when places skimp out on the coffee grounds. This restaurant deserves to be slammed for it's lazy cooking and food shortcuts that clearly contribute to the poor quality of the food. It's clear that the owners of this restaurant are taking advantage of the lack of Vietnamese food in the area to serve sub-par food at a level of cooking that they would never entertain in their own homes. Once upon a time, one from Delaware would have to travel to distant cities like Philadelphia, Baltimore, or New York to experience ethnic cuisine. I'm glad to say those days no longer exist. Nowadays, I only have to travel a few miles from my house to have a great bowl of pho! Pho Nhu Vu serves other Vietnamese dishes besides pho, but I always stick with the first word of their namesake and get the pho. I have tried the summer rolls on a couple occasions. Sorry, they just don't do it for me. It's hard for me to describe what I don't like about them. I'm just not crazy about them. Now the pho is a different story. I'm not a Pho connoisseur, so you can take my review with a grain of salt, but I think the pho from here is exceptional! I often catch myself dreaming about their large bowls of pho that have amazing depth and complexity. The color of the Bun Bo Hue soup emits a gorgeous red hue - pun intended! As it has been mentioned, finding oneself in the shadow of a Burger King... in Bear Delaware... can perhaps taint the initial expectation, but Pho Nhu Vu shakes it off gracefully. I've found gems in strip malls before but I always hesitate at first. Truly it was much nicer inside than a lot of Vietnamese places I've been in that really serve *the good stuff*, I thought... hmm maybe overcompensating for other things. But it was not long before I was proven completely wrong. I had a pretty good feeling after cruising the menu that they had it together - not just as a strictly Pho joint but all round Vitenamese everything - including bahn mi which even the places on Washington Ave in Philly don't have for the most part (or they -only- have them). A good variety - some vegetarian options too, soups, bún, and broken rice platters and specialty drinks. My bf and I both ordered bubble teasm one honeydew and one lychee - both delicious, a couple undercooked pearls. The service was friendly, fast and efficient. It was all quite clean, including the bathroom. Our búns were delightful - one chicken, one shrimp/grilled pork - both were the perfect balance of tender, caramelized meats, super crisp veggies and tender plentiful noodles - with a perky & sweet nuoc mam cham. I could have done with some basil and mint to go with my cilantro but I'm not going to complain - it was all round well done, * especially* being in Delaware, in the middle of nowhere. Slightly redundant, that. Since I find myself in DE fairly often I know I will be back. (I am literally sitting in the restaurant, extremely full, writing this review to defend against all the 1-2-3 star reviews which are complete lies.) I ordered the chicken vermicelli, my brother in law ordered a beef and tendon pho, and my dad ordered the spicy chicken pho. It was all amazing. So amazing we ate it before I could take pictures. I went here because it has a great review. Boy was i disappointed! The lady who took my take out order had an attitude. The food was mediocre. Small portion for a size large. We ordered steak pho, chicken pho, and grille chicken rice which totalled 25 bucks. It Would Be Okay If It Is Large As It Said But It Was half the portion of what we are use to get in viginia, nyc, md, and San francisco.. The soup taste super watered down and they won't let you order small size for take out. In addition, they charged extra 50 cent for an extra plastic bowl. Need major improvement both in service and food. Big thumbs down for the price and quality of food. Although the owners' son is one of my best friends, I must say that Pho Nhu Vu is one of the best VIetnamese restaurants around here. They have such a striking decor for a Vietnamese restaurant. Their creative minds help set a soothing atmosphere for any customer. Usually, Vietnamese restaurants are a little dirtier than a typical restaurant but this one was spot clean. Even the rest room was maintained appropriately! I would recommend trying out the Bun Bo Hue or the Pho there. I think that Pho Nhu Vu makes the best Bun Bo Hue! The service was extraordinary and impressive as you do not have to wait very long to take your order, get your food, and receive your check. The service is spot on! Anything else I missed? My husband and I stopped by for lunch as we both spotted the word "Pho" in the restaurant's name at the same time. I had the Bun Rieu. Even though the menu description said "crab meat with rice noodle soup," it is not. It is made with crab paste and it has tomato, ground pork, and tofu in it. My friend kept posting about this soup on her Facebook page so I have to try it. I thought the soup was very good. Definitely very different from the pho which I usually get often at a Vietnamese restaurant. My husband had the grilled pork and spring roll with vermicelli. I tried one bite of the pork and it was good. I didn't eat too much from his dish as I was enjoying mine a lot more. Service was good. Living in Delaware after having grown up in NYC shows you that Delawareans will eat any kind of crap that you put in front of them. Just for a change of pace, we decided to try Pho Nhu Vu. We had the stuffed grape leaves with their insipid dip sauce. They cost $5.95 for 5 of them. They were probably worth about, $2.00. We both had the brisket and steak pho. They give you the skimpy, thin sliced meat raw: you get to mix it into the pitifully small amount of noodles, cilantro and onions. A separate bag contains the tiny wedge of lime, mint and, what appeared to be, very old bean sprouts. The broth has no taste worth speaking about. Well, maybe they waved a small piece of star anise over it. It was hot though. I guess that aside from just being a native New Yorker, and an avid fan of Philadelphia's Vietnam Restaurant I was more than a bit let down by this catastrophe of a meal. As I stated at the start of this review, Delawareans will eat and enjoy any kind of crap put in front of them, despite their having paid for it as well. In short: This is one of my go-to restaurants in the Newark area, despite the slight drive. If I came alone, I'd get the regular brisket pho and one roast pork roll and be content. Word of warning, they run out of basil sometimes (usually Thursdays), but it's worth the risk. In full: I've been here so many times, we have the routine down pat as outlined below. For optimum experience, I'd recommend following a similar procedure. Modify to accommodate variations in taste preferences and appetites. 1. Check the window before entering to confirm we remember the order numbers correctly (34 and 7) 2. Order two large brisket pho (34) and two roast pork rolls (7) by number and the complimentary tea. For variety, switch out one #7 for a shrimp summer roll (1?). 3. Eat half of a roast pork roll appetizer, and feed the other 1.5 to boyfriend. 4. Divide the basil, lime, and bean sprouts among us and add to pho. 5. Add a smallish circle of the unlabeled red siracha and multiple circles of the unlabeled hoison sauce to pho and stir; adjusting sauce ratio to taste. 6. Eat 2/3 of pho, and feed the remainder to eats-until-he's-stuffed boyfriend. 7. Wait for boyfriend to order and consume a third #7 for dessert. 8. Flag down waitress, pay, depart, and succumb to food coma. read more

When I moved to Delaware from Portland, OR, the one thing that I knew I'd miss most is our weekly visits to our favorite Pho places. Thankfully, we immediately discovered Pho Nhu Vu. I don't want to be mean, but if I wasn't starving and desperate I don't think I would've continued eating my meal here. And in the end I probably I shouldn't have wasted my energy, because I definitely got nauseous and threw it all up later. (I don't think it was food poisoning, I just think my stomach didn't care too much for the food). I was staying in Delaware for the night, passing through on a road trip, and didn't want to dine at any of the nasty faux-food chain restaurants like (Cr)Applebees, which pretty much seems to be all there is around those parts. I was hoping to find a hidden gem, and perhaps I'm spoiled by the really amazing, authentic, fresh Vietnamese places I used to live by, but I was definitely let down. I didn't try the pho, I just got this lemongrass rice noodle and tofu dish, which was way to greasy for me to handle, the noodles were not as fresh and light as I hoped, and the -apparently- fried tofu was rubbery. Even the chopped peanuts garnished on top seemed like they came preserved in a can, if such a thing is possible. read more

Wonderfully prepared food. The service is respectful and the sitting is very pleasant. It used to be an old Subway or Quizno's, but the new owners have jazzed up the place beautifully. It's clean, colorful and a wonderful setting for lunch or dinner with loved ones. The soup is amazing here. As a side note, it is HUGE- which I suspect was deliberate so that you can enjoy it when you bring the rest home. Overall the food is very good and tasty, excellent quality and reasonably priced. I keep coming back every other month or two- which says alot. It's a quaint little area in a small plaza, but is very hard to miss. Once inside, you'll have a delightful experience. If you don't know what Pho is its Vietnamese beef noodle soup. However calling it that doesn't do it any justice...it's completely NOT chicken noodle soup but with beef instead. If you've never seen or smelled it before just go and get some from a great place like this. I'm totally addicted to this stuff, and that's a good thing. There's no better meal for the money and it's pretty cheap...if you get the large you will be full all day. I went for the first time today, and like a few others, had a little bit of trouble finding it; but the seach was worth it. Very friendly service when you walk in the door, the waitress gave me a few recommendations. I got the Bun Bo Hue; the broth was very good. I thought even though it's the first time I've had it, very flavorful and spicy, and the eggrolls were full of meat and crispy. Very relaxed atmosphere,clean and quick service. I will definitely be a return customer and will be telling my friends. I have been back several times, at least once a month, trying different Phos; the Bun Bo Xao is delicious as well as the stuffed grape leaves. I love this place! read more

Whyyyyyy do I keep going here? I mean I've only been 3 times but that's too much for how the pho tastes. I've had dumplings and egg rolls and spring/summer rolls which are good. I'm not the best person to ask about pho. I had never tried it before going to this restaurant, but... I LIKE IT -- at least the way that they make it and serve it here. It's also very affordable. This is very near to my house, and I tried it once on a whim. I've been here about 5 times since I first tried it -- so about 5 times in the past year and a half. People I brought here seemed to like it. Also, it's affordable. I like the broth -- and it seems to me that this is an essential aspect of pho -- without great broth, there's not much more to say about it. I like the idea of pho in general -- mixing in fresh herbs and peppers and such is enjoyable. I always ask for extra jalapenos. If some people who don't love this place but like pho have alternative suggestions, I'd love to try them! Otherwise, I'll keep going here. read more

summary ... best pho in Delaware, rivals pho places in Center City, but stick to the pho! I used to work nearby this place and in the cold half of the year, this place was like a body-and-spirit warmer. Especially when you've spent 6 hours working outside in single digit temperatures, a hot (both temperature and spice-speaking) vat of soup is such a beautiful thing. Their soups are about 1/2 gallon size, more than enough for one person, but maybe not enough to split between two people. They all come with a side of fresh bean sprouts, thai basil, and jalapeno peppers to add to the soup. The table also has Sriracha hot sauce and hoisin sauce to add additional flavor based on each person's preferences. I personally add everything, but I went frequently with coworkers who preferred the soup as is. My personal favorite is the beef stew pho (it's unlike normal pho where they give you thin, uncooked beef strips, but instead give you slow-cooked chunks of beef and carrot) with yellow egg noodles. I also really, really like their Vietnamese meatballs. I have tried some of their more authentic phos (that come with tripe and fatty beef) but I found the cuts of meat to be too distracting. I've heard many Vietnamese prefer the other cuts of meat as they are tastier, but the texture was too much for me. A couple of other positive points. The soups are reasonably priced which means you can add in appetizers and still have a low-cost lunch that will fill you up all day. Also, the waitstaff is REALLY friendly and very attentive (you'll want frequent water refills if you make it spicy). The owner wanders around every now and then and ensures that people are happy. Now that I no longer live in the area, I drive out my way to come here for pho whenever I have a craving. This place is that good. read more

This place is really Phó-nominal. Super fast service and the food come out piping hot. Order the beef brisket Phó and it didn't disappoint. Egg rolls were good wish there was more per serving but a large bowl will most definitely fill your appetite. I'll be back and will bring more people with me. read more

My husband & I moved to Bear, DE from Philly. I came here based on the reviews & the distance from our house. The first time was very disappointing. The prices are a little higher than places in South Philly. The pho noodles are disgusting. I agree with others who said that they are a bit stiff & taste like they weren't cooked all the way. The pho is so much better in South Philly. I haven't had a bowl that was disappointing in South Philly like this place is. My husband always gets the rice dishes. They are smaller and not as good as other places in Philly. I would drive all the way to Philly for a good bowl of pho, but my husband would rather stay local. In spite of my disappointment, I went back a couple more times because my cousin from Jersey wants pho when she visits. I've had bun bo hue, and the noodles taste much better than the pho. I also enjoy the Vietnamese iced coffees. The service needs improvement. The waitress never came back to check on us during our last dining experience. My husband finished his soda & wanted another one. The waitresses were just on their phones. Food: I don't eat red meat so I can't attest to any other pho besides the pho ga (chicken pho), but the pho ga is fantastic. I always come here to get the pho ga when I have a cold. A much better alternative to canned chicken noodle soup. :) I also religiously get their vegetarian egg rolls. They come with a spicy sweet fish sauce which I swear by. I've also had the chicken and rice meal - so good and filling! Atmosphere: Clean and lots of room to dine in. No booths, all tables. Service: Service has mostly been good.
